My mom's been talking about having a "jewelry party" for my sister and me for weeks, to give us a chance to look at my grandmother's gigantic (and eclectic) jewelry collection. And I was nervous, mostly, because your jewelry is just so... personal. Going through crap in her garage is one thing. Her jewelry box? Something totally different. But Tuesday night, Mom laid her jewelry out on the dining room table, and it was easier (and more fun) than I expected. She had so much, and some of it I remembered, some was super weird (a few cat pins, and a pair of earrings that I could have sworn looked like spines), but it was all so HER. The most common items? Anything in the shape of a daisy.

Breakfast Nook Table
I really wanted to make a simple table for the kitchen and I liked the taller coffee shop type tables. So I made something similar and I am working on the chairs for it now. Sadly I got discouraged on the project when a big crack formed right down the middle of the table. You can see where I have tried to rework it where the light sanded strip is right down the middle of it. I think it's ready to refinish now.

Shadow play...
I use a green orchid pot as a candle holder on the kitchen table and the sunlight decided to have a bit of fun with it. This is about as close to decorating for Halloween as it gets around here. There's no children knocking on doors along this stretch and I bake pumpkins rather than carve them. When the kids were young, we did the whole Halloween thing in a very homemade way...costumes, carving pumpkins, trick or treating and so on. Times have changed.

THE ALEXANDER INN
The Alexander Inn, called the “Guest House” in the early “secret city” war days, is closed and starting to deteriorate. It was built in 1943 to serve the top-secret Manhattan Project (WWII), and serve as a place for visitor’s like J. Robert Oppenheimer, Enrico Fermi, and Secretary of War Henry Stimson to stay while visiting “the project”!
Way back in the 50’s my Grandfather Williams, who worked at the ORNL (X-10) site as a carpenter. He had a little room and I remember visiting one time and he showed me a secret he kept hidden from the Inn’s management – a hotplate he had attached to a table, and somehow the device folded down out of sight – hidden inside the table. The guest were not supposed to cook in their rooms, but he was not one to follow rules! So, the place has special importance to me because he lived there.

"Faulkner built this room after 1950. The plot outline of A Fable is written on the wall in Faulkner's hand. He used graphite pencil and a red grease pencil to set down this working plan of the novel, which is about Holy Week set during World War I. Dining Room

Rafter J Bar Ranch Campground
After three nights, and two full days of fun in the sun at Lake McConaughy, we packed up the RV and headed North to South Dakota. Our campground for the remainder of the trip would be Rafter J Bar Ranch Campground. I found this little gem after a vigorous scouring of the options via the Internet, and let me tell you that it was a fantastic campground. There's more than enough to do in this region to merit another trip, and I can assure you that we'll stay there again.
"Rafter J" as we came to call it has a variety of campgrounds all in one complex. There's a healthy mix of everything from tents to RVs throughout. We stayed in Base Camp which is close to the main office and is designed for the larger vehicles. Each site has ample space, shade, full hook-ups (including cable television), and even wireless Internet (which I managed to stay off of entirely except for when getting directions).
The main office has a gift shop and smallish general store, which served us well, but they also rent cars! This really made the rest of the trip for us. Having to drive the RV all over the Black Hills would have been torture. Next to the main office is an outdoor heated pool, and a really nicely done playground. If we were in the campground, you can only imagine where Paige spent her time (and we issued her a walkie-talkie to check-in regularly).
Hindsight being what it is, we could have easily spent our entire trip at Rafter J. And the location is smack in the middle of everything you want to do (more on that later). Temperatures were daytime highs in the mid-80s, scattered showers in the late afternoon, and a cool evening by the fire for the night. The surrounding Black Hills forest gave you a pine-fresh smell with every breath. And as if the amenities themselves weren't enough, there's even a 110-mile bike trail the passes on one side of the campground.
So why didn't we stay there the entire trip? One word. Sturgis. We left on the Sunday the Sturgis Bike Rally started. While at the campground, it was clear that other campers were there for the big event. And no, it wasn't the massive brawling with rowdy crowds that you'd think. For Rafter J, it was far enough from Sturgis, SD that our crowd was more the retired, easy going, in bed by 9 PM crowd. Lots of great stories, and fun for Paige, too.
I also don't think that we originally thought that there'd be so much to do in the area. Surely there wouldn't be enough to do to keep us busy for a full week? Bzzt!

Constructed over a ten year period and finally completed in 1573, Middle Temple Hall is the focal point of Middle Temple, one of the oldest Inns of Court and is used by the members of the Inn for dining and entertaining. With its double hammer beam roof and wood paneling it has remained unchanged for four hundred years.
Many famous Elizabethans, including Walter Raleigh, Francis Drake, Martin Frobisher and John Hawkins, were members and frequent visitors. Festival times were a particular excuse for lavish entertainment and, during the Christmas celebrations in 1602, London's leading band of players, the Chamberlain's Men, gave the first recorded performance of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in Middle Temple Hall

Inside the Hall is the Bench Table, twenty-nine feet long and made of continuous planks taken from a single oak felled in Windsor Great Park and believed to have been a gift from Queen Elizabeth I, whose portrait hangs on the wall behind. The table was put in place before the Chancellor’s Window in the alcove to the left of it could be glazed. Two other treasures include a rectangular table with legs that seem to have been added as an afterthought. The oak that forms the table top was given to the Inn by Sir Francis Drake and started life as a hatch cover on The Pelican, later known as The Golden Hind.
At a distance, the Chancellor’s Window looks like a rather elaborate piece of stained glass. Close up, though, each frame contains a different coat of arms. Mostly Elizabethan, these are the arms of former lord chancellors, judges and ordinary members of Middle Temple.
Middle Temple Hall is one of London's great survivors - the Great Fire of 1666 miraculously left it unscathed after the wind changed course and wartime bombing destroyed only a fraction of the Eastern end.

Moshe & Sarah Mizrachi
I met Moshe and Sarah, an Orthodox Jewish
married couple, as they walked home from
shul via my street in North Hollywood. It was
Saturday, which I know is the Sabbath, but I
asked him anyway if I could take his photo.
"I can't stop you," he said.
"Well, I won't take it if you prefer I don't," I said.
It wasn't my intention to be disrepectful.
"Are you Jewish?" he asked.
"Yes," I said.
"Well, then, no, you can't take my picture, because
it is the Sabbath. But if you come tomorrow, you can
take ten pictures."
I agreed, and he gave me his address. The next
day, I walked with my son Joshua over to their
apartment on Whitsett Street. Sarah was home, but
Moshe wasn't. We went into their little apartment - big
dining room table, big couch, giant bookcase filled
with books and photos.
Sarah told me she was from L.A. and Moshe was
from Israel, and that they had lived there for a few
years and had recently moved here. He worked as
a contractor; she as a librarian at UCLA.
She called him on his cell. He said he was busy,
and that I should come back next weekend.
So I did. On Memorial Day, I called. Sarah
answered. She didn't seem as friendly as before.
She put Moshe on the line. I told him who i was,
and he said, "Oh. You didn't forget. Come over now."
Joshie and I walked over again. Moshe met us
outside his apartment, wearing his yahmulke. He asked
me if we could do it outside. Spying this white stucco
wall dappled with shadows, I told him that would be
good.
He went inside, and came out a few moments later
dressed in his Sabbath clothes - big long coat,
and a black hat. I was grateful to him for this,
as it was a very hot day.
I took many photos of him alone, and many close-ups.
He then instructed me to take some full-length shots,
which I had already done, but I took some more. He
was not exactly very warm - he was down to
business. Which was okay. He agreed to this,
and he was keeping his agreement. But I don't think
he liked it, or perhaps he had something better to do.
Sarah was watching us, very quietly, from a distance.
She said hello to Joshua, but not much more. Moshe checked
with her before he posed to see if he looked okay,
and told me one must always check with one's wife.
After I took his picture many times, I asked if I could take
one of them together. Sarah said no, that she wasn't
dressed in her Sabbath clothes. But I gently insisted,
and though neither of them was very enthused at this
prospect, Sarah joined Moshe against the wall
to pose.
But rather than put his arm around her, as mere friends
do while posing for a photo, or even standing beside her,
Moshe ushered Sarah behind him, where she quickly
went, and he stood in front of her. I thought about how
the Orthodox men do not even like to pray with their
wives in temple - that men and women must be
separate, since women are too distracting. And this
seemed to suggest to me at first that Moshe put
Sarah in an inferior position.
But later my brother reminded me that Orthodox men
revere their wives - and in a way, this could be
a protective stance - guarding Sarah from the modern
world in a way, the digital age that comes to
peer into their world of ancient rituals
and tradition.

Rimu table
I'm pretty happy with our new outdoor dining table. Considering I did this with no stationary power tools it's pretty darn good. The top is made from recycled rimu floor boards off a guy from work ($25) and the base is PT wood. I left all the surface imperfections in the rimu and just filled/sanded. The finish is hand rubbed oil which relaly brings out the color. The only flaw is that the legs aren't perfect square, I didn't have any bar clamps. I may have to wedge in some stringers along the leg bottoms if this turns out to bother me too much.

The old man used to fish for his living, and his wife spun yarn on her distaff. He once cast his net in the ocean, and pulled it up with mud from the bottom; He again cast his net in the ocean, and this time caught nothing but seaweed; When he cast his net for the third time, one fish was all that he landed; No common fish, though, but a goldfish. Now the goldfish began to implore him, and it spoke like a real human being: "Put me back, old man, into the ocean an I will pay you a right royal ransom -- I wilt give you whatever you ask me." The old man was astonished and frightened —
He'd been fishing for thirty-three summers, but had not heard of any fish talking.
So with care he untangled the goldfish and tenderly said as he did so:
"God bless you, my dear little goldfish!
Thank you kindly, I don't want your ransom. Go back to your home in the ocean, and roam where you will without hindrance."
To his wife the old fisherman hastened to tell about this great marvel.

A Zen Cat Xmas Tale
Dear Santa,
I know it’s a bit late to be writing a letter but I just got word that I’m on your list this year. Hell, talk about surprised, when I first heard that I made the A team I knew then and there how Saddam must have felt when he was pulled out of his hiding hole a few years back. Except! That I was like surprised in a good way. So before I present you with my register of wants I would like to get set a few things straight that may have occurred since you last updated that good boy / bad boy thing.
First of all I would like to clear up that little mishap with the Swinging Jesus venture that I had going on a few weeks back. At the time it seemed like such a great idea. I mean, being half Mexican/half Irish and living most of my young life in a Hispanic neighborhood I figured that kids having birthdays in mid December were getting a raw deal. You know one present now and in a few days when Christmas rolls around they would pick up the rest. Well, to tell you the truth being born in December sucks because that dog doesn’t hunt and as a rule “the birthday present” is usually a cheapie and definitely not electronic.
Unlike other birthday months where a kid usually has a rocking theme party and presents up the wazoo and all his/her friends are there and as a rule it turns out to be a great all around good time: December sucks.
So I thought. “HEY why not have it set up so that kids born in December can have a Mexican theme party that would tie birthday and Christmas together into the same celebration.
And I REALLY thought that the Jesus Pinata thing would work.
The first party was rolling around at a pretty damn good clip if you ask me. We had egg toss games, water balloon fights. We even had an Ozzie Osborne version of the pin the tale on the donkey where the kids would lay on the table and get fake tattoo administered by one another with indian ink and an electric toothbrush.
So when we ran the Jesus Pinata up on the old oak tree I thought for sure it would be a success but nooooooooo. As soon as the kids started whacking at JC (who happened to be filled with Lady Godiva chocolates mind you) some of the parents just went ballistic and the next thing I know I was tumbling across the front lawn trying to protect was not yet aching. I mean for Catholics these people were just plain violent.
So anyway Santa, all in all, you can see it was not intended as a malice act on my behalf. And besides I had to come up with my own bail. Try doing that when you only get one phone call.
Oh and I’m also sorry for telling the kids in my second grade class when we were on our last field trip to the cemetery that the statues were really kids that got long detention time. Other than that I’m think I’m still cool on the list eh?
Now if that is the case, I think it would be really cool if you could fix me up for a weekend with Angelica Huston. If not could you Photoshop an image of her on the inside of my eyelids.
