Sometimes there's really only one way to get the right flavors for one's salad dressing.

ETA:
Dressing:
- zest of one decent-sized orange
- teeny minced red onion bits
- juice of half that orange (the other half i sectioned & tossed into the salad)
- couple tablespoons of your fave vinegar (i used a home-infused mint vinegar, but anything would work here. am especially fond of champagne or rice vinegars for this)
- rosemary (dried b/c i had it, but fresh is my 1st choice)
- salt

1. pound the zest & onion with the herbs and salt with the back end of your spoon for about 5 seconds to bruise/pulverize them, thus releasing the nummy goodness.

2. add the juice & vinegar & put the whole thing in the microwave for about 20 secs to blend the flavors, then while warm, drizzle in your favorite mild oil (i find olive oil can be a bit heavy a flavor for this and often just use safflower, peanut, or whatever else i have around) while stirring briskly.

3. pour over salad.

4. eat.

Syn free quiche (red days)

Syn free quiche (red days)

Well I didn't follow a recipe but I think I can remember. I fried off a 3rd of an onion in a non stick frying pan with a spray of Frylight, chucked in a 3rd of a chopped, red pepper. Grabbed a handfull of runner beans out of the freezer, snapped them and popped them in. Had a box of dried mushrooms so about a tablespoon of them or chop some fresh. ... Read moreStrained a can of tuna (could use ham). Put 1/2 a tsp of mustard powder, a tsp of garlic puree and some mixed herbs into a jug. Added 4 eggs and a tub of quark. Mixed together. Put contents of the frying pan into my huge silicon bakeware flan case (any would do) and added the eggy mixture. Now I forgot to add the grated chedder so I popped 2 servings (50g) on the top. I have a posh (lol) microwave that has alot of presets and a combi oven so I would say just cook as you would a normal quiche. Mine took 12 mins to cook and we had for lunch with salad today.

Innovative Wood Drying: Applying Microwave and Solar Technologies to Wood Drying

Innovative Wood Drying: Applying Microwave and Solar Technologies to Wood Drying

Emphasis in the hardwood industry is shifting away from structural-grade timber toward the production of high-value products. Many dense hardwoods are extremely difficult to dry without causing defects such as: splitting, warping, twisting, and collapse. Solar power is a convenient and cheap energy source that can be easily applied to timber drying. It greatly improves wood quality and reduces timber drying costs by 50% or more compared with conventional drying kilns; however solar kilns are still slow and powerless to manipulate the density and moisture permeability of wood. A thorough mathematical study of the microwave heating phenomenon demonstrates that intense microwave energy can blast tiny holes through the wood structure to create microscopic pathways through which moisture may readily move. This process reduced solar kiln wood drying times by about 33 % without causing any change in the visible quality of the dried timber. This acceleration in solar drying is attributed to a 9% reduction in wood density and a substantial increase in moisture permeability associated with the microscopic internal fractures created in the wood by the microwave treatment.

Krympburkar - Saw off a thin base

Krympburkar - Saw off a thin base

A Norway maple belonging to friends was storm-damaged, and I asked for a couple of the still-green branches for this project. Krympburkarna--shrink pots--are made from both green and dry wood to create a no-nails, no-glue vessel.

All the instructions I could find were pretty vague, or in Swedish, so I guess I'm indulging in trial-and-error.

I decided on my second go 'round that one ought to cut a base first, to give it time to dry. Mine was about 8 mm thick, and if you don't have already dry wood (which I didn't), one of the sets of instructions I consulted said you could microwave it for a few seconds (I did two bursts of 15 seconds, letting it cool between).

Selecting and Drying Wood (New Best of Fine Woodworking)

This book collects the best articles from recent issues of Fine Woodworking on the subject of finding and working with wood. Wood is the one thing that woodworkers have in common and there is endless fascination with the working properties of various species, how to select and season wood and how to store it. Wood has a way of behaving as if it’s still alive, moving with seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. Learning to work with it rather than against wood movement is critical to successful woodworking.

James Decker of Dresserville/Sempronius, Cayuga County, NY

James Decker is my 3ggrandfather, and part of Mom's Obama connection--James Decker's mother was Hannah Alyea, whose grandmother was Annatje Mors Demarest, the link with Barack's mother's Demarest line.

Obit for James Decker, from Owasco/Cayuga Hist. Soc., no date, but he died August 10, 1887:

The funeral of James Decker was held at his late residence near Dresserville, this morning. Mr. Decker was eighty four years old, was a kind and obliging neighbor and had many friends.

No date, from Cayuga/Owasco Lake Hist. Soc.:
Dwelling house burned--The house of James Decker, of Dresserville, burned to the ground on Thursday afternoon of last week, in the absence of the inmates. The house was occupied by George Ripley, who was absent at Homer that day, while Mrs. Ripley was engaged at one of the neighbors, and the children were at school. The fire is supposed to have originated in a defective stove pipe and was discovered by the neighbors, not in time to save the dwelling, though they did rescue the greater portion of its contents. The house was insured for $350 in the --- of this village, which ---- of its value, and the people have generously contributed to the relief of Mr. Riply and his wife.

James is buried in Dresserville cem>OLD DRESSERVILLE CEMETERY/OLD SETTLERS

Located on macadam county road No. 69, E. side, just N of Dresserville village at foot

Cay.Co., NY, 1904. Abandoned many years ago and nearly impassible. Many stones
down and illegible. Copied 1956 by Leslie L. Luther, Moravia, NY

I visited the "hall of records" in Dresserville and got James's death certificate from a great old book, and visited this cemetery on a snowy day over spring break about 1998, and saw how the forest has reclaimed it; but I suspect ground sonar and a backhoe could do wonders here.

Photo ran in the February 8, 1962 edition of Wilmette Life. The story provided the following details: The engine cost $56,970 and included a 100-foot hydraulically operated aerial ladder on a revolving stand, and a 300 gallon engine water tank. Wilmette voters provided funds in the spring of 1961 when they voted overwhelmingly for a $300,000 bond levy. "It's the most versatile piece of equipment we own," said Fred Behrendt. The engine was constructed by the Seagraves Corporation.

My Signature Spinach-Artichoke Dip

My Signature Spinach-Artichoke Dip

Here is my recipe for the Spinach-Artichoke Dip...

You will need...

2 packages of Green Giant frozen Creamed Spinach
1 can of Artichoke Hearts (make sure they are NOT marinated in spices)
1 fresh Lemon
2 bags of Mozzarella Grated Cheese (4 cups total)
2 bags of Parmesan Grated Cheese (not powder, 4 cups total)
Garlic Powder, Salt, and Fresh Ground Pepper
Parsley Flakes for Garnish on top

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.

Defrost the Creamed Spinach in the microwave on high until completely thawed, stop the microwave every few minutes and stir to ensure even thawing.

Mince the Artichoke hearts in the food processor until it is even with no big pieces.

Combine the Spinach and Artichoke Hearts in a large mixing bowl, then add the juice of a half a lemon or whole lemon depending on the lemon flavor you want to add. Add garlic powder, salt, and fresh ground pepper to taste. Mix this all up thoroughly.

Next add ONE bag of Mozzarella Cheese (2 cups) and ONE bag of Parmesan Cheese (2 cups). Note, the other two bags will be used for topping later. Combine the cheese and mixture thoroughly.

Spoon the mixture into a casserole dish or small glass pan that is oven-safe, be sure it will have enough room at the top for the cheese topping and will not bubble over in the oven. Flatten it all out with a spoon so that the surface is even. Now add one bag of Mozzarella cheese on top first (2 cups), then finish with the bag of Parmesan cheese (2 cups).

Bake in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees until the cheese is all thoroughly melted and the mixture is bubbly. Now, with the pan centered in the oven - turn it onto broil to brown the cheese just slightly on the top to make it look scrumptious - WATCH it very closely during the broil - it gets brown VERY quickly. Take it out as soon as it gets a good golden brown and the texture is revealed.

Sprinkle the Parsley flakes on the top very lightly for a gorgeous garnish and use the garnish to cover any area that are uneven - it hides any imperfections beautifully.

Serve the dip with tortilla chips, or my favorite - Frito's SCOOPS.

Enjoy!

The Universe at High-z, Large-Scale Structure and the Cosmic Microwave Background: Proceedings of an Advanced Summer School Held at Laredo, Cantabria, ... 4-8 September 1995 (Lecture Notes in Physics)

Cosmology has dramatically evolved during the last decade and there has been vast development of, e.g., theories of galaxy formation in connection with the early universe or gravitational lensing. These new developments motivated the editors to organize a school covering all of these ideas and observations in a pedagogical way. The topics covered in the 26 lectures of this summer school include: QSO absorption systems, identification of objects at high redshift, radiogalaxies, galaxy formation and evolution, galaxy number counts, clustering, theories of structure formation, large-scale structure and streaming motions, gravitational lensing, and spectrum and anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background radiation. Observational developments, data analysis, and theoretical aspects are equally treated.

Hubble closeup of "RTM-1", one of many noticeable blue galaxy pairs, just above yellow galaxy in lower left corner of #20 and #22, magenta in #23, and background of many tiny bright blue sources on a darker 3D fractal network, "Murray mesh".

The 125 X 125 pixel field was cropped from #23, and expanded to fit the page, and saved as tif 2.25 MB and this png .087 MB image.

The pixels are .03 arc-second each, so that the original Hubble Ultra Deep Field, 6200 X 6200 pixels, is 186 X 186 arc-seconds, 3.1 X 3.1 arc-minutes, a tenth of the diameter of the Full Moon or the Sun, 0.5 degrees, 30 arc-minutes.

This view is 125 X 125 p, 3.75 X 3.75 arc-sec. The length of the dumbell shape of the two blue galaxies is 1/9 of the 125 p width of the view, 14 X 7 p, 0.4 X 0.2 arc-sec. --
ten times less long than CSL-1 (now known to be simply a close pair of very similar
elliptical galaxies).

Notice the background scatter of bright blue sources, 1 to 2 pixel size, and the dark background fractal 3D mesh of tangled filaments.

The bright blue sources, like tiny Christmas lights, are always on the dark 3D mesh.

The infrared view in #37 is a close-up, about 30 arc-sec wide, of this same region, just to the lower left of the center of infrared view #36, which is about 60 arc-sec wide.
In it, the bright irregular white source in the lower right is this early smallish clump cluster galaxy, and just to the upper left of it is RTM-1, a reddish feature that seems to extend towards the clump cluster galaxy, but is very likely more distant.

The closest infrared view is #38.

In this view, #31, the visual field at twice the scale, RTM-1, appears as two close bright blue sources, probably very hot. It may be that the center of RTM-1 is a active black hole within an early, irregular galaxy, with the black hole heating its dust and gas clouds, while its two jets extend into the intergalatic medium and pile up in opposite directions to comprise the pair of very hot bright blue sources.

The coding at some stage in the image processing has produced prevalent vertical straight line artifacts.

time 0.000380 BY, the expanding hot atomic plasma, made of electrons and protons, which had been opaque to light, had cooled enough, 3,000 deg Kelvin, to allow the free electrons to bind with the free protons to form atoms of H, becoming a transparent gas -- by now these photons have cooled and redshifted with the expanding space-time of the Universe to become the ubiquitous 2.7 deg Kelvin cosmic microwave background, CMB.

But without stars, the universe was without light - the dark ages.

Gravity, very slowly at first, then faster and ever faster, started pulling the initially
slightly denser volumes of gas inward to form complex fractile networks of increasingly dense filaments and nodes.

The first stars each formed within a single cloud of about a million solar masses, contracting to ignite a central mass of about 100 to 1000 solar masses. These huge stars burned hotly and quickly for short lifespans of a few million years, and their intense ultraviolet light started to reionize the gas. Many exploded as hypernovae, illuminating the Universe, and venting huge amounts of heavier elements, called 'metals', into the galactic gas.

Later stars, with increasing metal contents, were able to form more quickly and were smaller, cooler, less bright, and much longer lived, and so the masses of contracting gas became clusters of hot, crooked dwarf galaxies.

This view may show this, with the ultraviolet light from the early hyper novae redshifted to the maroon color of the far background, highlighting the complex 3D fractile dark network of condensing darker filaments and nodes, which in turn give birth to the hot, ultraviolet bright, crooked dwarf galaxies, closer to us, and so redshifted a lesser degree to bright blue.

and my head is going to become very worn out thinking about the conversation i had with victoria hammlet on the impossibility of meaning in anything with life and listening to her wonder that everything is pointless
and all i can think about is there is no way someone who plays the cello with as much conviction as you do could think that everything is pointless
or whose repressed sighs, endlessly harmonized "AHHHS" swirling and glowing inside of a dirty coffee cup and a bass drum
and i know your longing and my impatience is what is behind the science of an evolutionary need
FOR THE SEASONS TO CHANGE
i can sense the great depression of summer sweat salt and the winter coats weighing on y/our skin
is it really all the way until june until i'm myself again?
maybe never, maybe this summer was a fluke, like a stupid film
o exfoliate
o expatriate
i feel like it is my duty as a human being to convince you otherwise though i'm not entirely sure what the point of doing that is or whether or not anything is not meaningless if nothing is important then why are we talking about the possibility of nothing being important in the first place
if nothing is important then why is it important that nothing is important
there is a kind of tree that i like a lot that i think is sort of important
they are sort of like beech trees but they are not beech trees and you can peel off the bark horizontally like paper and dry it out on a table under the sun and staple or sew them together and use them to make small books or write letters to people if you want
this is not important i am going to pass out in a puddle of orange juice and i will stand up with a puddle of orange juice on my face
and people will say that is a large freckle on your face maureen
and my shirt will be orange and my pants will be orangey blue or something
and the internet says that the following things implode: light bulbs, galaxies, marshmallows

Creamy Sugared Pecan Pralines

Creamy Sugared Pecan Pralines

KIRK’S PRALINES
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
? cup evaporated milk

2T. butter
2T. vanilla
1 – 2 cups pecan halves (2 cups makes a real chunky praline – I prefer 1 ?)

Variations:
Coffee flavored, put 2T. instant espresso coffee into mixture when adding the pecans.
For Egg Nog flavored, put 1 tsp fresh ground nutmeg when adding the pecans.

Cook sugars and milk on medium high to soft-ball stage, stirring occasionally; when temp gets near soft ball, stir the mixture with the thermometer to get a truer reading.
When bubbling sugar mixture reaches soft ball stage, add remaining 3 ingredients. Cook back up to soft ball stage; “Soft Ball” stage is important, go a degree or two over before under.
Remove from heat and stir/beat with wooden spoon until thick*. Spoon out quickly onto parchment or freezer paper. When cool, remove from paper and store in airtight container. When giving away, I like to cut the paper into squares and wrap individual pralines.

*Beating until thick is crucial, if it isn’t thick enough, the mixture will run all over and may not harden and stay sticky. However, if you beat it to long, it will thicken to the point where you can’t spoon it out smoothly. If they do not harden after 5 or 10 minutes, don’t panic, scrape sticky pralines off paper with a spatula and put back in pot. Cook again to the soft ball stage, beat and spoon out again.

Makes 12 – 15 pralines using a #30 ice cream scoop.

Tips: Until you get the steps down pat, it helps to get everything ready ahead of time. Lay out your parchment, put out a trivet to put the hot pot on for the final mixing, have a glove type pot holder for easier/safer handling when spooning out the mixture, measure out the pralines and butter into a bowl to have ready when needed - have a measuring spoon and vanilla out and ready.
Doing these things you won’t be scrambling around trying to find and measure stuff when the mixture is at correct temperature. Once you get the steps down, you can do most of those things while the sugar mixture is cooking.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (The Victoria Terminus) & Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai - India

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (The Victoria Terminus) & Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Mumbai - India

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (Marathi: ?????????? ?????? ??????) (formerly the Bombay Municipal Corporation) or the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai is the civic body that governs the city of Mumbai (Bombay). It is India's richest municipal organisation. Established under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, it is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city and some suburbs of Mumbai. Its motto, ??? ????????? ?? (Sanskrit: Yato Dharmastato Jaya or, Where there is Righteousness, there shall be Victory) is inscribed on the banner of its Coat of Arms. Built in the Indo Saracenic style of architecture the BMC, as it is more popularly known, is the largest civic organisation in the country, and administers an area of 434 sq km.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Marathi: ??????? ?????? ??????), formerly Victoria Terminus, and better known by its abbreviation CST or Bombay VT) is an historic railway station which serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways. It is one of the busiest railway stations in India[citation needed], and serves Central Railway trains terminating in Mumbai as well as the Mumbai suburban railway.

The station was designed by Frederick William Stevens, a consulting architect in 1887-1888, for the princely sum of 16.14 lakh rupees. Stevens earned the commission to construct the station after a masterpiece water colour sketch by draughts man Axel Herman. After earning the commission, Stevens went on a ten-month trip to Europe to make a detailed study of the stations there. The final design bears some resemblance to St. Pancras station in London[citation needed]. It took ten years to complete and was named "Victoria Terminus" in honor of the reigning Queen Victoria.

In 1996, the station was renamed by the state government after Chhatrapati Shivaji, a famed 17th century Maratha king.

On July 2, 2004 the station was nominated a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO.

Here in these 3 tombs lie Hamida Begum (Emperor Humayun's Wife and Emperor Akbar's mother) Dara Shikoh (Emperor Shah Jahan's son) & (Wish anyone can tell me who lies in the 3rd tomb?) - Emperor Humayu

It was my long cherished wish to visit Delhi (Capital of India) to pay my respect to the tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun, from whom I have got my own name.

The Reign of Humayun, 1530-1556

Babur's eldest son and successor, Humayun, was 22 years old when his father passed away. Humayun lacked the experience and the tough fiber necessary to consolidate a new dynasty. Thus, the first decade of his rule brought a steady erosion of Mughal authority in northern India. In particular, Humayun had to deal with the determined hostility of the Afghans who were still allied with the dispossessed Lodi regime.

Humayun was defeated and dislodged by insurrections of nobles from the old Lodi regime. In 1540, the Mughal domain came under the control of one of those nobles, Farid Khan Sur, who assumed the regional name of Shir Shah Sur. Humayun would spend the next 15 years in exile in Sind, Iran, and then Afghanistan. During this exile, Humayun's Persian wife, Hamida Begum, a native of Turbat-I Shaykh Jam in Khurasan, gave birth to the future emperor Akbar.
Humayun died in 1556, and his widow Hamida Banu Begam, also known as Haji Begam.
An architectural forerunner of the Taj Mahal, Haji Banu Begum commenced the construction of his tomb in 1569, fourteen years after his death. It is the first distinct example of proper Mughal style, which was inspired by Persian architecture.
Its arched entrances and bulbous dome are surrounded by lovely formal gardens, making it one of the most beautiful Mughal buildings in the city Delhi.
Haji Banu Begum too is buried here.
Mirak Mirza Ghiyath, a Persian, was the architect employed by Haji Begam for this tomb.

Bahan frosting :
a€? 250 ml whipped cream cair
a€? 1 sdm gula pasir
a€? 250 gr selai blueberry

1. Siapkan loyang bongkar pasang 22 cm, olesi mentega
2. Hancur biscuit hingga halus, tuang margarine leleh, vanila, dan kopi
instant, aduk rata.
3. Masukan adonan biscuit pada loyang, ratakan dan tekan2 sampai
padat. Oven sebentar 5-10 menit, angkat, sisihkan.
4. Adonan cake, kocok telur dan gula hingga kental dan mengembang,
masukan cream cheese dan sour cream bergantian sambil terus dikocok
sampai lembut.
5. Susun black cherry diloyang isi biscuit (diatas biscuit), lalu
tuang adonan cake, oven dengan cara au bain marie selama 90 menit,

6. Dinginkan dalam lemari pendingin sampai 1 jam. Keluarkan.
7. Kocok whipped cream dan gula pasir sampai kental, olesi diatas
cake. Ratakan selai blueberry diatasnya, hias sesuai selera.

* Bring all ingredients to room temperature before mixing. This usually takes thirty minutes.
* To soften cream cheese in the microwave: place unwrapped 8 oz. cheese in a microwavable bowl and microwave on high for 15 seconds. Add 15 seconds for each additional bar of cheese.
* Mix filling only until combined. Don’t over mix.
* Use a spring form pan so that the sides can be removed.
* Butter sides or use a metal spatula around the edges immediately after removing the cheese cake from the oven.
* Place spring form pan on a shallow pan, like a pizza pan , or cover bottom and up one inch around the sides with aluminum foil to avoid leaks in the oven.
* Place a shallow pan of water in rack below cheesecake to keep oven moist.
* Don’t open oven door while baking.
* A perfectly baked cheesecake will be puffed around the edges. When shaken, about an inch in diameter in the center should jiggle.
* Cool slowly (about an hour) on a wire rack, away from any drafts.
* Store in the refrigerator, loosely covered, for up to four days.
* The bottom of the pan can be removed from the cheesecake once the cake has firmed in the refrigerator. Use two spatulas to move cake to serving platter.
* Garnishing a cheesecake should only be done within 1 to 3 hours of serving.
* Cheesecakes taste best when brought to room temperature. This takes about 30 minutes.
* Securely wrap an already firm, about 4 hours in the refrigerator, cheesecake to be put in the freezer. Cheesecakes can be kept for up to 2 months in the freezer.
* Thaw frozen cheesecake overnight in the refrigerator.

gingerbread men, too tasty?

gingerbread men, too tasty?

Gingerbread Man Cookies Recipe

* 3 1/4 cups sifted all-purpose flour
* 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
* 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter (room temperature, softened)
* 1/2 cup dark-brown sugar, packed
* 1 Tbsp ground ginger
* 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
* 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
* 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
* 1/4 teaspoon finely ground black pepper
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 large egg
* 1/2 cup unsulfured molasses
* Optional raisins, chocolate chips, candy pieces, frosting

Royal Icing

* 1 egg white
* 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
* 1 3/4 cup confectioners sugar (powdered sugar)

Method

1 In a large bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, and spices. Set aside.

2 In an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter. Add sugar and beat until fluffy. Mix in eggs and molasses. Gradually add the flour mixture; combine on low speed. (You may need to work it with your hands to incorporate the last bit of flour.) Divide dough in thirds; wrap each third in plastic. Chill for at least 1 hour or overnight. Before rolling out, let sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes. If after refrigerating the dough feels too soft to roll-out, work in a little more flour.

3 Heat oven to 350°. Place a dough third on a large piece of lightly floured parchment paper or wax paper. Using a rolling pin, roll dough 1/8 inch thick. Refrigerate again for 5-10 minutes to make it easier to cut out the cookies. Use either a cookie cutter or place a stencil over the dough and use a knife to cut into desired shapes. Press raisins, chocolate chips, or candy pieces in the center of each cookie if desired for "buttons".

4 Transfer to ungreased baking sheets. Bake until crisp but not darkened, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Let sit a few minutes and then use a metal spatula to transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. Decorate as desired.

Makes 16 5-inch long cookies.
Royal Icing

The traditional way to make Royal Icing is to beat egg whites and lemon juice together, adding the powdered sugar until the mixture holds stiff peaks. With modern concerns about salmonella from raw eggs, you can either use powdered egg whites or heat the egg whites first to kill any bacteria. With the heating method, mix the egg white and lemon juice with a third of the sugar, heat in a microwave until the mixture's temperature is 160°F. Then remove from microwave, and beat in the remaining sugar until stiff peaks form. Using the powdered egg whites method, combine 1 Tbsp egg white powder with 2 Tbsp water. Proceed as you would otherwise. (Raw egg white alternatives from the 2006 Joy of Cooking)

If the icing is too runny, add more powdered sugar until you get the desired consistency. Fill a piping bag with the icing to pipe out into different shapes. (Or use a plastic sandwich bag, with the tip of one corner of the bag cut off.) Keep the icing covered while you work with it or it will dry out.

How to Bake a Perfect Life: A Novel

How to Bake a Perfect Life: A Novel

In a novel as warm and embracing as a family kitchen, Barbara O’Neal explores the poignant, sometimes complex relationships between mothers and daughters—and the healing magic of homemade bread.

Professional baker Ramona Gallagher is a master of an art that has sustained her through the most turbulent times, including a baby at fifteen and an endless family feud. But now Ramona’s bakery threatens to crumble around her. Literally. She’s one water-heater disaster away from losing her grandmother’s rambling Victorian and everything she’s worked so hard to build.

When Ramona’s soldier son-in-law is wounded in Afghanistan, her daughter, Sophia, races overseas to be at his side, leaving Ramona as the only suitable guardian for Sophia’s thirteen-year-old stepdaughter, Katie. Heartbroken, Katie feels that she’s being dumped again—this time on the doorstep of a woman out of practice with mothering.

Ramona relies upon a special set of tools—patience, persistence, and the reliability of a good recipe—when rebellious Katie arrives. And as she relives her own history of difficult choices, Ramona shares her love of baking with the troubled girl. Slowly, Katie begins to find self-acceptance and a place to call home. And when a man from her past returns to offer a second chance at love, Ramona discovers that even the best recipe tastes better when you add time, care, and a few secret ingredients of your own.

How to Bake : Complete Guide to Perfect Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Tarts, Breads, Pizzas, Muffins,

How To Bake is as necessary and essential as a good oven; it is the most comprehensive and accessible guide to baking available in English. In a single, illustrated volume, Nick Malgieri, one of America's preeminent bakers and baking teachers, leads cooks through the simple art of creating an international assortment of delicious sweet and savory baked goods.
Here are the best recipes for breads, including such quick ones as Buttermilk Corn Bread, Irish Soda Bread, Classic Southern Biscuits, and Currant Tea Scones, as well as such delicious yeast-risen breads as Italian Bread Rings, Swiss Rye Bread, Challah, and EnglishMuffins. Malgieri also offers recipes for savory treats like Old-Fashioned Chicken Pie, Pepper and Onion Frittata Tart, Cheese Quiche, and Rosemary Focaccia; and for sweet pastries ranging from puff pastries--Apple Turnovers, Banana Feuilletes with Caramel Sauce, Brioches, Strawberry Savarin, and Croissants--to pies and tarts, cobblers, and cookies of every stripe--drop, bar, rolled, and filled; brownies, macaroons, and rugelach. Cakes, too, are here, from layered to rolled, from angel to devil's food.
The recipes in How to Bake are clear and methodical. Master recipes explain all the steps to making a classic dish. They are frequently followed by creative variations so that the baker's palate and skills will always be accommodated and challenged. Start out with a simple spice cake, for example, and transform it, under Malgieri's reassuring guidance, into a lavishly decorated celebration cake.
In addition to an exhaustive and tempting selection of recipes, Malgieri offers clear, detailed instructions, interweaving techniques and helpful sidebars: how to make a pastry bag out of parchment paper; what baking pans to buy; mastering pie and cake toppings; learning to decorate a cake so it looks as if it came from the bakery; and scores of other helpful tips. All this is punctuated with precise explanatory illustrations and thirty-two pages of luscious color photographs to inspire and guide the baker. How to Bake is a one-volume "bible" for bakers.

The Source: A Novel

In his signature style of grand storytelling, James Michener sweeps us back through time to the Holy Land, thousands of years ago. By exploring the lives and discoveries of modern archaeologists excavating the site of Tell Makor, Michener vividly re-creates life in and around an ancient city during critical periods of its existence, and traces the profound history of the Jews, including that of the early Hebrews and their persecution, the impact of Christianity on the Jewish world, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition. Michener weaves his epic tale of love, strength, and faith until at last he arrives at the founding of Israel and the modern conflict in the Middle East. The Source is not only a compelling history of the Holy Land and its people but a richly written saga that encompasses the development of Western civilization and the great religious and cultural ideas that have shaped our world.

beauty, what is that?

beauty, what is that?

Beauty, what is that?
Beautiful, what does it mean?

Is it a law, a dream?

I find myself wondering the answer for these questions, without coming to a firm conclusion.
Beauty. It's so powerful, yet thought to be delicate. I feel caged, like a slave without freedom. Just because of a word. Just one word. Why?

Perfect. Ethereal. Gorgeous.

Where I live beauty means having blue, green eyes and light hair. Being tall, thin.
Why am I, having brown eyes and dark hair, not beautiful?
Why am I, being fat and short, not beautiful?

Even myself I can't deny the attraction of the word. How soft, how taunting it sounds, looks, smells, feels like.

Like a world of madness, full of liars, of pain, of sorrow. Why do we have to suffer to be beautiful? I want to be real, to be me. To be normal, to be fierce.
Why does the world tell me if I'm beautiful or not?
Why do I have to be miserable while magazines show me perfection?
Why should I be perfect?

Perfection is boring. Boredom means not interesting. I want to be interesting, I want to be imperfect then!

I love my widely-spaced front teeth.
I love my brown eyes, my brown hair.
I love my big forehead.
My fatness.
I won't lie, I wish I was taller though.

Beauty is nothing and everything.
Beauty is happiness, sadness.
Beauty is life, memories.
Beauty is a tear, a smile.
Beauty is a storm, an ocean.
Beauty is music, silence.
Beauty is art.
Beauty is strange, unique
Beauty is blue, green, orange, brown, yellow, black,
white, beige, pink, red, violet, gold, silver, amber.
Big, small, short, tall, thin, giant.
Rough, soft, sharp, tender, scratchy.

But the most important meaning of being beautiful, is being true to yourself.

Cristina

It's wrinkled!
It's covered in cat hair!
AUGH!"

It looked like a perfectly comfortable kitten bed to her ... arranged for her royal comfort.

Actually her brother Malachite Mayhem was equally guilty, but he jumped down and ran over to the 'fud bowl' as soon as he spotted me. Not sure whether he was escaping with feelings of guilt, or just being a bottomless pit of a hungry kitten. (Probably both.)

Sigh. We love these little miscreants. Yes we do. Sigh.
