(15) Female Wood Duck Female Wood Duck (Aix sponsa). They're related to the Mandarin Duck - I prefer the Mandarin Duck, Janelle prefers the Wood Duck. Sexual dimorphism refers to differences in the appearance, including size, of males and females of a species (aside from the obvious difference in the genitalia). Birds tend to have some of the best examples of this phenomenon. The females of most bird species are incredibly bland-looking. It makes sense - if they'll be spending much of their time sitting on eggs, then they don't want to draw attention to themselves. Yet the female wood duck displays a bit of brilliance of its own. The blue-tipped wings are a feature somewhat similar to female mallards (seemingly the most common duck in North America), yet the female wood duck also boasts an incandescent sheen along her wings and, in contrast with the male wood duck's red eyes, has a yellow ring around her eyes (although the iris itself is not yellow). Wood ducks were once a threatened species, but habitat protection, increased awareness, and greater efforts to provide breeding areas for the ducks has caused the species to proliferate nicely. This picture has been cropped by ~50% and the resolution was further scaled down to 1600x1200 for upload. This is a camera JPEG that has not been subject to any further post-processing. The following settings were used on-camera: "vivid" color scheme; sharpness, saturation, and contrast at +1; white balance set to sunny; pattern metering mode. Taken in Central Park at the Harlem Meer. The 'Glamorous Gal' IMG_2026 Retired Navy Captain Dale Snodgrass passes by show center in the North American Avaition P-51 "Mustang". Faced with imminent invasion in 1939 and desperately short of fighters, the Royal Air Force (RAF) asked North American Aviation to produce urgently the existing but obsolete P-40 "Warhawk". But instead the company designed, built, and flew a new airplane in just 117 days - the Mustang. Using existing Allison engine and the latest laminar-flow wing, the new fighter immediately went into service with the RAF. In December 1941 America joined the war, and it too needed good fighters fast. So the USAAF took the basic RAF Mustang, re-armed it with four machine guns, and added an uprated engine. It was a good performer, but couldn't operate well alongside the high-flying long-range bomber. By 1944 the aircraft used the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, had a new bubble cockpit and increased firepower to six .50cal machine guns. It was now the best fighter in the war and fought superbly in all theaters, as fighter, fighter-bomber, and reconnaissance platform. It was loved by its aircrews, and no fewer than 281 Mustang pilots became aces by the end of the war. I don't think it would have looked right on a simple subject. I like the original photo the best, this owl was just beautiful, but since the assignment was filter use, I went with it. I used the unsharp filter mask, then used the plaster filter and then reduced noise. Then I cropped to size. (15) The Crack Of Dawn I brought back one of my old school favorites this morning to raise some awareness as to the things that really frustrate me about Flickr. I originally posted this shot into a ton of groups (when I first started shooting I did this) and when i went to post this image in Sarah's new group Piling Love I was frustrated by all the stupid graphics and senseless comments. Now let me clear something up... I would rather you not comment at all on my shot then post some stupid graphic or a one word comment. Those of you out there that think I am going to swing by your photostream just because you dropped your garbage on mine, you are wrong. It is funny that this practice gets worse the farther your image gets into explore..that's when the real weirdos come out. :) Now, that being said..their are worse examples in my opinion, that have taken a toll on me over time and I have grown bored with these practices so the following things will get you blocked immediately....... 1. You fav a bunch of my shots and/or add them to your gallery and when I go to look at your photostream you don't have anything available to ME? Blocked. 2. You photostream contains even 1 photo of you in your underwear (or worse). This is especially important if your self portrait is of you in a skirt and you have hairy legs. NO ONE wants to see that. If you are doing anything that is against the law with animals, fruit, small or large objects or have an entire photostream of half naked people at the beach you are now BLOCKED. 3. You post your last 5 images via Flickrriver under your thoughtless 4 word comment. My photostream, as well as others are not your advertising board. BLOCKED. 4. You post one of your medium sized images under your comment in my stream. Again, if we wanted to come see your shot we would come look at it. I don't need a photo, 5 photos, an invite or a link to come see it. BLOCKED. 5. You are just plain weird, annoying, ignorant or stupid. Mike Jones already has this job and i am not accepting any other applications at this time. As you can see, I LIKE to block people...it is fun for me. I have a custom made keyboard with a huge block pad right where the 10 key used to be. I wanted to raise awareness to some of these issues because my block list is about 7 pages long now and I would hate to find out flickr has a limit. If any of this bothers you personally or you feel offended..... you might already be blocked. :) Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all have a great weekend! Bulky Water Pitcher Doing More Harm than Good This water filter pitcher, though it may seem like a good idea, does more harm than good. It's bulky and holds less than 4 glasses of water. GLASS WATER FILTER JUG : FILTER JUG
Glass Water Filter Jug
Day 7 A grand haul today as I was on my own, free to 'potter' and find bits here and there. From top left: 1. 2 bottles of out of date sparkling water. One was 2001 the other 2003 and they had both lost their fizz. Going to put the water in the water butt and recycle the bottles. 2. Birthday card book, the type you put birthday cards in under the appropriate months so you don't forget. Personally it's not big enough for me so I might as well lose it. Going to a Freegler. 3. Another china milk jug - we don't use these and have got a glass one if we ever did. In the Oxfam bag. 4. A load of glass pebbles from a vase. I've had these for a few years now so it's time to lose them. Offered on Freegle, no takers yet. If no one wants them I'll put them in the Oxfam bag. 5. 2 tubs of tea. One is green tea, the other vanilla flavoured Earl Grey, both out of date and both of which I don't like. Put the teabags in the compost bin and recycled the containers. 6. Long plastic box with handle. From my crafting - have downsized so don't need this any more. It's got a crack and split in it anyway, so I'll fill it with more craft stuff and offer it on Freegle. 7. An empty box I was keeping in case it was useful. Gone in the recycling bag. 8. A porcelain dish with lid. Very pretty but totally useless to me. Put in the charity bag. 9. Some fruit that is past its best. The lemon and limes I bought before Christmas so they're really hard now, also the kiwi fruit are wrinkled and the satsumas have shrunk in the skins, so dried out. I put these in the compost bin. 10. Some old parish magazines. We only keep the last 2 so these are older than that. In the recycling bag. 11. A purple knitted top. I will never wear it, it's been on Ebay with no takers, so I gave it to my daughter. 12. Serviettes. I must be realistic, we just don't use these, so I don't know why I keep on buying them!. If we need something like that we use kitchen towel. Going in the charity bag. 13. A used water filter cartridge. I took this out of the water filter and it's full of scale. I have seen a recycling facilty somewhere for them so it will go in that when I remember where it was! 14. 2 plastic wallets from when I joined Slimming World. I will put these in the recycling bag. Nocino and cat Adapted original from Tom Mentzer Ingredients 5 pounds green walnuts, about 40 1 stick cinnamon 5 whole cloves 12 coffee beans Peel of 1 lemon removed with vegetable peeler, no pith 1.75 liters 100-proof vodka 4 cups sugar Directions 1. Soak walnuts in water overnight 2. Quarter walnuts and place into large glass jug with other ingredients. Leave in sunny spot for two months, shaking occasionally. 3. Double strain liquid in sieve and cheesecloth (or coffee filter, much slower) and bottle. 4. Store for at least two months. 5. Drink. 1. Aldi-Filialleiter benutzen gro?e, offenere Blenden (zB. F2.8) und Edeka-Vertriebschefs benutzen kleine, geschlossenere Blenden (zB. F22). Einen Bruchteil davon siehst D AF-S DX NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens Review: Ghosting The reviewers are right -- this lens is pretty susceptible to the green genie. Check out that green spot that appeared when the lights of the train came right at the lens. I thought a multi-coated UV filter would help, but looks like it doesn't. The only other lens I own that does this on a regular basis is the Sigma 30mm f/1.4, so it's quite disappointing to see this happening on a pro lens with a gold line ... :p Of course, maybe it's because the UV filter I have isn't good enough.
