JUST A MEMORY NOW

JUST A MEMORY NOW

This beautiful bush of mallows blooms only in the late fall and it had been flowering just a few days when we had some freezing temps that wiped the whole plant out... right to the ground. The same thing happened last year and it came back so I'm hoping for the best.

Jasmine & the Orchids (97 of 365)

Jasmine & the Orchids (97 of 365)

My wife bought these Orchids over Easter weekend and I figured that I would try to get a shot of them before they died. So, I set up a shot with a single flower and started shooting. After a few minutes, I turned around and noticed that Jasmine was helping by smelling and eating the flowers. So, I spun myself and one of my lights around and snapped a couple pictures of Jasmine and the rest of the flowers. When I went to review my pictures when I was done shooting, this one was more fun than the setup flower shot that I worked on, so Jasmine won out.

The lighting for this was my trusty SB-600 through the 24"x24" softbox camera left and high. It was a quick setup in order to catch the moment...I just moved the light and then shot a couple frames while adjusting the flash to get the exposure correct. I used the Nikon Nikkor 105mm lens on the Nikon D700 camera for this shot. Did I mention that I really love this lens. It is supposed to be a macro lens (or Micro in Nikon speak), but it is really great at taking ultra-sharp images from any distance.

**I apologize that I've fallen behind on leaving comments for all of you lately, I've been working on our taxes this week (oh what fun!).**

A time when I could buy dresses

A time when I could buy dresses

Wedding reception three years ago in Sfax, Tunisia. Nina and Lucy with the traditional jasmine flowers.

This also happened to be Lucy's birthday so these were the nicest of the dresses I'd bought for the 3-day wedding. A Jacquard weave made the satin fabric look extra special. They were large enough that they could be worn again two summers later.

It was also the last summer that I could buy dresses and the girls would wear them without question.

Although the Taj is amazingly graceful from almost any angle, it's the close-up detail, which is really astounding. Semiprecious stones are inlaid into the marble in beautiful patterns and with superb craft in a process known as pietra dura. violet trio

*Explore/Interestingness*
when i was a kid, aunt joanie and i picked violets like these and made lovely violet jelly. i miss her.

recipe for Violet Jelly
(makes 4 or 5 half-pint jars)

2 heaping cups of fresh violets- no stems
2 cups boiling water
1/4 c. well-strained, clear lemon juice
4 cups sugar
3 ounces liquid pectin (Certo)
(optional: 1/2 tsp. rosewater)

1. wash violets, drain and place in heat-proof glass/non-reactive bowl. Pour boiling water over violets and steep for 2 hours. Strain through a fine sieve, reserving the clear, purple infusion
2. place jars & lids in stock pot deep enough to cover by 2". Bring water to a boil, then reduce to simmer & keep hot till ready to fill.
3. to make the jelly: stir lemon juice & sugar into reserved infusion in a 2 qt. pan. Bring to a full rolling boil that cannot be stirred down. Add the liquid pectin and continue to boil for 2 minutes, skimming any foam that may rise to the surface.
4. Ladle quickly into jars to within 1/8" from the top. Clean rim & threads and place tops before filling the next jar. Screw bands tightly & invert jars on tea towel for 5-10 minutes. Jars should seal and pop shut within 10 minutes, as they cool. Sealed jars will last for up to 1 year in cool, dark storage. Open jars will keep for 3 weeks in refrigerator.

La Fontana

La Fontana

My Mom's work (Kaiser Permanente - Elk Grove Clinic )was having an Italian inspired potluck party to celebrate their 4th year in operation and she asked me to make a cake to look like a fountain. The cake was to sit ontop of a dessert "fountain" (a tiered stand made by her staff) and be filled with desserts brought in by the staff. So... fun for me ~ I got to get my creative juices going and come up with this!
Scupted tiers covered in fondant, embossed with "carvings", 3-dimensional floral royal icing decoration and sponge painted to mimic ancient marble. THe "water" is blue buttercream and the "spray" is wired blue and clear crystals.
Funny part of the story is that when Mom picked up the cake it was a HOT, HOT day and she got stuck in heavy traffic which turned her 1 hour expected trip into almost 3! The sun was beating in the window and just before she arrived to her destination, the back half of the cake melted before her eyes!!!! OH NO!!!! So.. then she REALLY had a cake that looked like an ancient Roman fountain.,.. one recently discovered and unearthed! Not to worry ~ It's only cake!! They left it "as is" and had a fun party with the ancient fountain in the center of the room!

[NeverWhere] - Polythymnia

[NeverWhere] - Polythymnia

Name: Polythymnia [Pah-lee-theem-nee-yah]

Age: Stopped counting after 125

Origin: Odelle - A planet in a galaxy far, far away.

Location: Rain Forest of NeverWhere

Role: Gatherer

------------------------------------------------------------
It was a normal day for Nia, she got up early to go out and gather food and supplies for her family.. She stopped at the door, grabbed her basket, and went her usual way, through the forest and along the creek.. She stopped halfway along the creek to admire the newly grown flowers that only bloomed around that time of the year. She smiled at them, "How beautiful they are.." she thought to her self. Though her mother always warned her, "Be mindful of your time when you go out Polythmnia, never stay longer than needed.." She usually did just that, but today was different.. The forest seemed more alluring than ever, with the grass so green, the trees so full, and the flowers so vivid and brightly colored.. Even the creek she sat next to seemed clearer, who wouldn't want to stay there a while and admire it all. Nia stayed for what seemed like hours picking flowers, and laying out in the dew coated grass listening to the birds song's. Soon Nia decided that she had better start working again, she picked up her basket and went on her way...
Soon she found herself at her favorite fruit tree, it grew sweet fruit called Ree. It's like a peach, and it was her favorite fruit. She smiled up at the big, beautiful tree, and stroked the soft leaves. She began to carefully pick the Ree from the tree, and placed them in her basket, careful not to squish the freshly picked flowers.. But then she got the strangest feeling none she had ever felt before, the birds began to stop singing, the crickets stopped chirping, all the cheeriness that she felt only moments ago was replaced by a darkness. She froze, her ears perked back, the hair on the back of her neck standing up.. She stood there for what seemed like minutes as she listened for danger, then she heard foot steps.. "Could it be an animal..? A deer possibly?" She wondered to her self "No.. it's different.. it's more than one. Two, three maybe." she thought. Then she heard voices, getting louder and louder. Soon she could hear what they were saying, "We're going to make so much off of our next catch, I just know it!" one cheered. "Hah, I wouldn't be too sure about that in these woods.. These freaks here are worth nothing." another said. Nia, still frozen, panicked she didn't know what to do. She couldn't move she was to afraid to turn around and face the men coming close. Finally, they had found her.. "Look!" one shouted. Nia spun around to face the men. She wanted to plead with them, ask them to not take her and sell her. But the fear stopped her from even blinking.. It was obvious that they were Hunters, each one of the men had a tail tied to their belts, and the belts appeared to be made out of dried skin. Nia cringed mentally.. One man had the tail of a white Leopard Hybrid tied on his belt, the other had two Horse Hybrid tails, one black, the other brown, and the last man, who appeared to be the leader, had one Goat Hybrid tail pinned on his belt, a Donkey Hybrid tail, and two long brown and orange spotted Cat Hybrid tails. "Well, well.. look what we have here.." said the leader. He was tall, muscular, and had long jet black hair. "I told you we wouldn't find anything worth selling, Esyrah." said the one with the Horse tails. He was slightly less muscular than the leader, but he seemed more agressive, he also had jet black hair but shorter. It seemed like he was realated to the leader.. "Ah, but those horns.." said the one with the Leopard tail, or Esyrah.. He stepped a little closer to Nia, smiling. He was a greatly less muscular than the other too, but had beautiful long blonde hair pulled back into a ponytail, and seemed way too cocky for his own good. "Yes, she does.." she leader said grinning. "She may not be worth selling, but those horns would." he continued as if Nia couldn't understand. "Well, then kill her and get it over with! I'd like to get back before dark.." the one with the Horse tails said in an annoyed tone. The leader pulled a large knife off his belt and slowly started walking towards Nia, still grinning. "I have to leave.." she thought. And she did just that, she dropped her basket, spun around, and ran. But the fear slowed her down greatly and the man tackled her, he sat up on her and spun her around to face him.. "I'm sorry, I really am." the man said without a hint of remorse. He held the knife above his head with both hands preparing to stab her in the forehead, but as he did she moved slightly and stabbed her in the eye instead on accident. She screamed in pain and in reaction she shoved him off her and ran.. She ran as fast and as far as she could, she could

EPIPHANY, 1937

The flowering sea and the mountains in the moon’s waning
the great stone close to the Barbary figs and the asphodels
the jar that refused to go dry at the end of day
and the closed bed by the cypress trees and your hair
golden; the stars of the Swan and that other star, Aldebaran.

I’ve kept a rein on my life, kept a rein on my life, travelling
among yellow trees in driving rain
on silent slopes loaded with beech leaves,
no fire on their peaks; it’s getting dark.
I’ve kept a rein on my life; on your left hand a line
a scar at your knee, perhaps they exist
on the sand of the past summer perhaps
they remain there where the north wind blew as I hear
an alien voice around the frozen lake.
The faces I see do not ask questions nor does the woman
bent as she walks giving her child the breast.
I climb the mountains; dark ravines; the snow-covered
plain, into the distance stretches the snow-covered plain, they ask nothing
neither time shut up in dumb chapels nor
hands outstretched to beg, nor the roads.
I’ve kept a rein on my life whispering in a boundless silence
I no longer know how to speak nor how to think; whispers
like the breathing of the cypress tree that night
like the human voice of the night sea on pebbles
like the memory of your voice saying ‘happiness’.

I close my eyes looking for the secret meeting-place of the waters
under the ice the sea’s smile, the closed wells
groping with my veins for those veins that escape me
there where the water-lilies end and that man
who walks blindly across the snows of silence.
I’ve kept a rein on my life, with him, looking for the water that touches you
heavy drops on green leaves, on your face
in the empty garden, drops in the motionless reservoir
striking a swan dead in its white wings
living trees and your eyes riveted.

This road has no end, has no relief, however hard you try
to recall your childhood years, those who left, those
lost in sleep, in the graves of the sea,
however much you ask bodies you’ve loved to stoop
under the harsh branches of the plane trees there
where a ray of the sun, naked, stood still
and a dog leapt and your heart shuddered,
the road has no relief; I’ve kept a rein on my life.

The snow
and the water frozen in the hoofmarks of the horses.

George Seferis

Open Design Lotus Flower Pendant in Sterling Silver on a 16

A beautiful and delicate lotus flower design is cut out of sterling silver and hangs from a 16" sterling silver box chain. Buddhists liken the unfolding of the lotus petals to the unfolding of the divine within the human self. The closed bloom represents the heart with its infinite potential for enlightenment; the open blossom represents the enlightened self. In Buddhism the lotus blossom represents a heart opening. The lotus flower blooms on the surface of water, with its roots deep below in mud - making it a symbol of light and beauty emerging from darkness. This simple yet elegant pendant is stamped 925 and measures 5/8" in diameter. See our Taos Trading Storefront for a great selection of jewelry designs and styles.

The Root Of The Problem

The Root Of The Problem

Explore #275 6/03/09

I was walking through the Nursing Home the other day and spotted a giant pink flower in a vase. The Home is filled with many beautiful silk flowers and so I presumed this was a silk flower too. This triggered the memory of an incident that I feel may have shaped me into who I am, so I thought I would share it with you.
No butterflies are injured here, but if you read carefully you might find an uncomfortable trend….

So here is what happened.

Many years ago I was visiting with my Mom in Boca Raton Florida.
I decided to take a break and headed over to the shopping mall.
Now, shopping malls are a little different in Boca… no JC Pennys, K Marts or Sears here… just one exclusive (read expensive) shop after another. Hundreds of them.

I was cruising around from store to store (no reason to go slowly at those prices) when I happened through a Bergdorf Goodman and spotted the absolutely best looking silk orchids I have ever seen. I was a little late so I was rushing, but just couldn’t get over how real they looked.
But for $250 each, I guess they should have looked that real!

As I breezed by, my right hand casually reached out to feel the silky essence of these amazing blooms. As I squeezed the petals I was amazed at how real they actually felt and my hand lingered just a moment too long. To my surprise the bloom came off in my hand, and to my horror as my hand closed I heard a crunching sound just as I realized that the blossom WAS real!
Out of the corner of my eye I think I read something along the lines of rare blooming… only once yearly… if you’re lucky (okay, I added that last one just for the poetic license of it all)..... do not touch!
I must confess, I continued to rush through the store, the whole while clutching in my hand a very squashed $250 flower!
My poor Mom never did understand why, when she wanted to go shopping , I would drag her hours in each direction instead of just heading over to that mall!!!!

So, as you may have already figured, that blossom in the Nursing Home was real – a gorgeous, gigantic peony and I had it trapped between my fingers… but… just in the nick of time, I released it and continued on!
For some reason that seemed to have spurned a need to post many peony macros recently… and to wonder if this was indeed the root of my very peculiar crunching problem....

For those who are confused by the crunching problem reference, please check out my Accidents I Tell You set and it will all start to make sense... if you can call it that!!! LOL!

A creepy spot of land

A creepy spot of land

Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass, Lake District, Cumbria

Some background information

Muncaster Castle is located on the right bank of the River Esk, about a mile south of the west-coastal town of Ravenglass. The estate is situated in sparsely populated and scenic countryside between the Irish Sea and Hardknott Pass, near England's tallest mountain, Scafell Pike. It is still owned by the noble Pennington family, who has lived there for at least 800 years.

In 1208 Muncaster estate was granted to Alan de Penitone. The oldest parts of the castle include the great hall and the 14th century pele tower, a type of watch-tower fortification unique to the English-Scottish border region, which were erected by wealthy English families to protect themselves and their estates against Scottish invaders.

It is suspected that the site of the castle lies on foundations dating to the Roman era, which may relate to the nearby Roman fort of Glannoventa at Ravenglass. An indication for this suspicion is the name "Muncaster", which contains the Latin word "castra", meaning "encampment" or "fort".

After the battle of Towton in 1461, Henry VI fled to Muncaster Castle where Sir John Pennington sheltered him. Henry gave Sir John a glass drinking bowl with a prayer that they might prosper for as long as the glass remained unbroken. The glass is known as "The Luck of Muncaster" and remains unbroken to this day.

Over the course of the centuries Muncaster Castle was extended and enlarged on a number of occasions. Recent historical research has uncovered records which indicate that in 1678 the castle had 14 chimneys, while a document relating to payment of window tax in 1746 recorded that it had 103 windows as well as 55 rooms and corridors at that date.

However, by the time of the ownership of Sir Joseph Pennington in the 1770s, the castle had fallen into serious decay. His son, Sir John Pennington, arriving to live at the castle after his wedding in 1778, wrote with despair of how a part of the building collapsed even as he was inspecting it. The preservation of the castle to this day is due to the efforts of Sir John Pennington to rebuild and restore it, which costed him some six thousand pounds, an enormous sum of money in the late 18th century.

In August 2005 an archaeological investigation was conducted in the castle grounds and an architectural heritage peport was produced. This investigation revealed that the castle's north tower was constructed in the 1830s. Previous literature on the north tower mistakenly attributed its construction to the architect Anthony Salvin, who was engaged to refurbish the castle by the fourth Lord Muncaster in 1862. The north tower complements the pele tower to provide a symmetry to the castle's appearance.

Muncaster Castle estate in the early 20th century was around 23,000 acres (93 km?) in size. Today the castle is surrounded by "only" 77 acres (310,000 m?) of woodland gardens in a park of some 1,800 acres (7.3 km?). The gardens contain many rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas, and the castle's Plant Centre offers the largest collection of rhododendrons in the north of England.

In common with many such ancient estates in the British Isles Muncaster Castle is open to the public. But unfortunately visitors are not allowed to photograph the interiors. The castle also operates as a site where civil weddings may be held, has bookable accommodation for 24 guests, shows bird of prey demonstrations and is the location of the headquarters of the World Owl Trust, a registered UK charity dedicated to the preservation of owls and their habitats.

Muncaster Castle and its hauntings:

Muncaster Castle has acquired a reputation for being one of the most haunted castles in England, perhaps even the most haunted one. It only competes with Hampton Court Palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and Chillingham Castle in Northhumberland, which can come up with a similar number of hauntings.

The two most famous ghosts of Muncaster are the ones of Thomas Skelton, reputedly the last court jester in English history, and Mary Bragg, a local girl who was most likely murdered on the castle grounds by two young men in the 19th century after they'd kidnapped her on behalf of her rival in love. But let’s take one thing at a time:

Tom Fool:
At the end of the 16th century Thomas Skelton, better known as Tom Fool, acted as as jester on Muncaster Castle. Although a friend of William Shakespeare, he was by all accounts a dark character responsible for a number of deaths during his time at Muncaster. One of his ideas of a "joke" was directing anyone asking him for directions to Ravenglass towards the hidden quicksand and bog marsh by the River Esk rather than the ford – some realised in time, many did not and were never seen again.
Despite Thomas Skelton being a jester, the local carpenter certainly wasn't laughing
