that day went a little something like this: went to casa del mar (aka bryce and paul's place in del mar) after class around 3, drove to carlsbad with pauly to pick up a tripod for $10 around 3:45, came back to del mar at 4:30, met up with bryce at 10th street for 30 minutes to take pictures while the sun was setting, drove back to casa del mar, played super mario on wii for about 2 hours, took the boys to pho in rancho bernardo a little bit after 7, we ended up at my house at 8:30, watched a little bit of parks and recreation until 8:45, went to barnes and noble to peruse their selections until 9:45 (i bought pride and prejudice and zombies [it's a mash up of jane austen's classic with zombies] and bryce bought dostoevsky's the brothers karamazov, henry david thoreaux's walden and civil disobedience, and tolstoy's death of ivan ilyich), headed over to the movie theater to watch avatar in imax 3d (this movie was absolutely INCREDIBLE. james cameron is a genius. but i knew this the moment after i watched titanic.) at 10:20, got out of the movie a little bit after 1, drove back to my house, and then finally parted ways. whew. i congratulate you if you read this nonsense.

On a whim I purchased a Minolta SRT 101 35mm film camera that I saw on Craigslist today. I got it for $30.00, and it looks really good. I beleive they were made from 1966 to 1975, but I don't know exactly what year this is. It is basically in really good clean condition, but the lense was loose and needed a few screws tightened up on the inside, and the filter threads are dented and dinged up a bit. I took it to the local camera shop and they put a new battery in it for six bucks. I shot a roll of film today just to test it out. Will post some when I get them developed. I don't have much experience with film, but I love the look and feel of these old cameras. The SRT 101 is completely manual in operation.

This is me about 9 years ago on the top of mt tongariro on my first (backpacking) visit to New Zealand. This is an active volcano and there are little steam vents everywhere, hot pools, emerald lakes, lava flows etc etc... you know... usual volcano stuff.. Im hoping to do this walk again some time in the near future (the tongariro crossing walk - basically from one side of the volcano to the other), this time with a digital cam.

And now, for a very longwinded Chaybert story!

Well... Looks like the longest adventure of my life has finally come to an end. I have completed my great big loop, and reached home base. Mesa Arizona. I don't think Mesa will ever feel like home, but everyone needs someplace to consider home. The company I work for is in Mesa. I have a comfortable place there to park my motorhome. So, for now... That's it. I never thought I'd be really excited to see Mesa. I don't really like it there, but right now, I am thrilled to be back. I just need to settle in and stop running for a while.

Seven years ago, I took the trip that changed my life. I spent three months in a pop-up camper, and did a full loop around the country. It was the best three months of my life. I never felt homesick. I didn't want to go home. I loved it so much, that I wanted to spend many years just doing that, just traveling around. Three years ago, I sold my house, and bought a motorhome. I thought I could just take off, live on the road, and never look back. I was wrong! After spending 4-5 months in Florida, and the deep south, I have to admit, it felt REALLY GOOD to get back to New Jersey, and see my friends and family, and settle in for a little while. Then I went to Maine for six months, which was FANTASTIC, but STILL it felt good to get back home afterwards. So... That's the repeating pattern I have found since I've been living in this thing. I have about a five month limit. Five months of running around, bouncing from place to place, being in a different spot each week, and I start to feel totally burnt out and need to stay put for a couple months. Whether it's in New Jersey, or Mesa, Arizona, I just need to settle in and stop running.

This trip smashed all my previous records! 9 1/2 MONTHS ON THE ROAD!!! What a crazy whirlwind tour this has been. I left the office in Mesa, mid April. With the exception of spending one full month In Durango, Colorado, I have not spent much more than one week in any one spot in 9 1/2 MONTHS! Now THAT'S a roadtrip! I hit Grand Canyon, Havasu Falls, Page, Bryce, Zion, Vegas, Sequoia, Yosemite, Mono Lake, Monument Valley, Durango, Rocky Mountain National Park, Denver, Colorado Springs, New Mexico, then spent the last three months bouncing around Texas. Moving the motorhome isn't like just jumping in your car and taking off. Each time I relocate, involves hours of stowing things away, fastening things down, disconnecting things, hooking up my truck, which gets towed behind... There is a whole big checklist of stuff to do every time I move. Then when I get to wherever I'm going, I have to reverse the process. Disconnect the truck, take out everything I put away, and aim the satellite dish (A BIG PAIN IN THE ASS!!!) I just went and looked back at my calendar to tally up the stats. In total I camped in 46 different places. Stayed in the parking lots of 22 different Walmarts. That doesn't include sidetrips where I ditched the motorhome, and slept in the back of my truck. Did three of those. If I include my sidetrips, in the past nine months I have passed through 26 states. Even did one trip where I flew into Reno Nevada.

I know everyone thinks I have this dream life, and I'm on vacation all the time. I thought the same thing, four years ago, when I decided to sell my house, and do this. Like I said before, when I took my three month trip around the country seven years ago, I didn't get homesick for one second the whole time. I guess deep in my mind, I always knew that I did have a home to come back to, and that was reassuring. After three years of doing this, sometimes it does still feel weird and kind of depressing. Sometimes when I've been running, running, running from place to place for a few weeks strait, I think, 'Alright... I've had it. I just want to go home.' And then, I remember, I don't have a home, and it makes me kind of sad. I think, 'this is IT! I'm living in a Walmart parking lot. This is my home!' It's the little things I miss. Things you totally take for granted when you're a normal person, living in a normal house. Above all... Just knowing where everything is. Something I never even would have thought of when I decided to sell my house and do this. Just having a favorite grocery store, knowing how to get there without thinking about it, and knowing where everything is in the store. Funny how you don't think about that until it's gone. I stay in each place for a week or two. As soon as I have figured out which is my favorite store, and can remember what aisle the Spam is in, I move on and start from scratch all over again. So... That is just one of many reasons why it feels so good to get back to home base. Mesa sucks, but at least I know where everything is. This will be a nice break from more than 40 weeks of bouncing around from place to place!

I'm Feelin' HOT, HOT, HOT!!!!!!!!

But, it's a dry heat... No, actually it's quite pleasant out right now. The hot spell finally broke yesterday. Earlier in the week it was 100 degrees every afternoon. I can't believe people actually live in this place year round. And, to think... It's still April. This is just a tiny little preview of what's to come next month. The sun is SOOOOOO strong down here. I have so many windows in the motorhome. It's like I'm in a greenhouse. The air conditioning can't even keep up with the strength of the sun. It's pointless. I gave up on the AC, and bought some extra fans. Now I have so many fans in my windows, my motorhome has turned into a wind tunnel. Seriously, anything that is not weighted down just gets sucked through the living room and blown out the bedroom windows. I had to go out to the local camera store and buy a bunch of Nikon cameras. I finally found a perfect use for Nikons. They make fantastic paperweights.

This shot is from Saguaro National Park, East, from a visit to Tucson a month or so ago. I got there for sunrise. This was early in the morning, as a storm rolls in, in the background. I find dead Saguaros kind of fascinating. They have this wooden skeleton inside of them, almost like an animal.

Windsor Forest

There is a long story behind this set of slides. Went in the forest /just/ after it got re-opened, after the foot-and-mouth epidemic zone was lifted. I had been autumn-colors-deprived becaude all the cool places were closed during the best of the season so I pulled all the stops and went in with the Crown Graphic, Metal Tripod, bag with 12 film holder with Velvia, dark cloth, reflector, oh, and a camera bag for the digital SLR of course. "Light Kit".... ahum.

And well, I sorta got lost; following a path that I assumed would gently curve back to where I wanted to go, it turns out it was curving /very/ gently back and took me miles over where my car was.

So overall, I got into the forest at 9am, and got back into my car at 3pm, totally exhausted, dehydrated etc.

But, the slides are gorgeous, so it was well worth it !

On this path was a beech and an oak battling it out to out-color the others.

Another piece from my run out to the lost farm fields a week back.

I need to invest in some night vision goggles. I can usually do well in the dark, walking around exploring- but, this night, I mistakenly kneeled in a particularly smelly pile of poop while setting up my camera for a shot.

It was smelly. Smelly, smelly. But, it was a real conundrum, because it happened to my puffy, insulated cold weather pants. So, I was faced with the choice of rank poo on my knees wafting to my senses every time I moved, or shiver my skinny white boy legs in the cold winter night.

I'd like to say something like, "Fortunately, thanks to my long years in the Alaskan wilderness and having to bathe every morning in the glacial run-off streams, dropping the fece faded pants was no problem" but, I've never spent long years in the Alaskan wilderness, and I have a difficult time bathing in the semi-warm summer streams of New Jersey! When I go out shooting at night, I dress like the Michelin tire man. I like being a warm bear.

So, I suffered the poo-roma and stayed warm the whole night.

The creepy crawlies were quiet this night, which was a relief. So, who knew? Ghosts hate poop smell as much as we do! I know garlic repels vampires, and I'm game to wear that around my neck. But, a dog-poo medallion around my neck to keep the ghosts away is more than I'm willing to try.

So, night vision to dodge the poo piles. That's what I need. Hm, maybe night vision with ghost spectrum also?

Tunnel Vision

Last night my friends and I decided to go on an adventure. We did our usual hike to the "P" except, we did it in the dark of night. Its much harder climbing up the side of a hill when you can't see where your going. Once we got to the "P" we had a good view, but since we were feeling adventurous, we continued hiking to the top of the hill. On the other side of the hill there are no lights whatsoever, so it was pretty amazing for stargazing (along with listening to a pack of coyotes and watching a train come out of the middle of the mountain).

Once we go there, I set up the camera and started the exposure.... and twenty minutes later, this is the result. This is by far the longest single exposure I have ever taken, but I think it turned out good...

2010-01-28 - Gorillapod Focus

While I was up at the "Top of the Rock", I realized that it is very important to be able to have some way to stabilize the camera without having a tripod or monopod (both not allowed there). The result was me picking up a Gorillapod Focus which can hold up to 11lbs (can easily handle my 5D with 70-2000 2.8IS) and can wrap onto just about anything and a Manfrotto 494RC2 compact ballhead to match.

Now even something as mundane as the back of chair can be my "tripod" and best of all, the gorillapod and ballhead combined only weighs around 1.5lbs so I can bring it everywhere.

This won't replace my real tripod but when in a pinch, I've got something stable to put the gear on. Hooorah!

It is a little difficult for me to say that the noise suppression is good even though it is ISO 320. However, I can say that the auto white balance is pretty precise while it was dark indoor and the color reappearance is not bad. If you ask me how I can opine about the color reappearance with the white desk and cup, well…

Having used it for the last couple of days, it surely made me to cast away my prejudice over the Samsung camera that I had before only looking at the photo performance. It really became much better and can compete with some renowned Japanese digital camera. Well, it still may be difficult to compete with other manufacturers.

One of the reasons I wanted to buy the iPhone was that I can share photos immediately with internet. Now, I can say to the iPhone ‘Go away’!

All the features of this camera made it possible. If you read my postings, SNS users will probably buy this camera, I presume. Your kind attention to my four coming reviews of the features will be highly appreciated.'

All products from Samsung Digital Imaging have the distinguished lineup. They have released various products according to the design and performance from the highest level WB series, ST, PL, and ES, so it gives more choices to users. Among them, the ST series shows more sensible and elegant design than other cameras.

We can also see the ST1000(CL65) I’m reviewing now is elegant and luxurious product. However, this also supports distinguished functions, not just emphasizing the design, so this catches my eyes. (GPS, which was supported for DSLR only as an option, is included, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also supported. Besides, I could see this features DLNA which is a home networking service.)

I’m expecting this much, because functions which we can’t even imagine for compact digital cameras are supported. Let’s check them through the review.

Hello Flickr friends! Wow, not being able to log in to Flickr for 4 days seems like forever!

My wife and I went to the butterfly house in Sweetbriar Nature Center Last Thursday. I thought it was free but I had to pay 3 dollars for each of us so I made sure I went out with plenty of shots. lol! (yes, I'm cheap sometimes!)

I'm in a bind and maybe you folks can help me decide... I need to buy a new body in the next few months. Since this purchase will be for generating income, I'm getting a semi-pro body. It'll be a purchase that will last me a couple of years (but I'll still get a second body if everything works out), so I have to make sure it won't get obsolete very soon.

I'm considering the D300 this November. In as much as I don't like buying that early in the game (I'm definitely sure I'm paying at least $300 in premium for being an early adapter with a few bugs to fix {remember the iphone?}), waiting a few months more for the frenzy to subside would be counterproductive to what I want to acheive in the next few months. I guess the D200 is an alternative, but with the small price difference between it and the D300 (Yes, I find that a small difference! lol), I don't think it is the best idea.

No, I'm not considering buying a refurbished or used camera this time. My D50 was bought refurbished and even though I never really had problems with it, I had a few scares and I don't want that to happen to a more expensive body. It has to be reliable with a complete warranty.

Walking back from Loch Lomond Shores after having a good day out with my nieces, I spotted this little fella lying on the pavement. He was dead already but looked in good condition, good enough to try some macro photography anyways!

Sat him up on a piece of A5 paper and then used a 430 EXII flash for some fill light, used off camera and held directly above, at 1/16th power. Used cactus wireless triggers to trigger the flash.

Still plenty more I can do with this photo so I'll have a play about and see what I can do.

The shot was taken at night, hand held with an off camera flash Nikon D80 with a sigma 105 Macro lens, off camera SB600 wireless flash held low and to the left. Fired from on camera with no light contribution. They were all shot between F8 and F11 1/60 sec ISO 200. Shot Raw converted to JPG in CS5
