We planning to visit Panamik and Sumar, after reaching Hundar. I proposed 5 am in the morning. Yes 5 am in the morning is quite early from the sleepy village to wake up. Parvez as usually said "No problem sir jee". Next day he was surprised to see me call him at dot 5 in the morning. Yep i'm a little "notorious" for my punctuality. Some time some of my fights with my buddies has been because of that. We all draped in the best possible warmers and moved on the Toyota Qualis. Soon dusty village road gave way to the shining tar road. Most of the roads in Ladakh where there is an Army presence is extremely well maintained. Hundar leads to the road to Turtuk which borders POK (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir). While the road which goes to Panamik is the way to the world's highest and costliest battle field Siachin. So to go to Panamik we have to go through Disket, cross the wide valley of the Shyok river and then turn towards Sumar. Nubra valley stretches almost more then 15k in width. One side there is Ladakh range while other side its the Karakoram range. One of the distinct observation one would make while moving thorugh the valley is the wide range of geological formation that had happened over billions of years. Slates and shale gives a glazing appearance in the morning light while weathered layered sandstones with rich mineral deposits changes its color like a chameleon with every passing hour of the day. Fascinating Alluvial fans (snap shaped formation formed by fast moving streams) could be seen on the rugged surface of the mountains. Alluvial fans are very much visible from a distant and forms great photos. It's a delight to photograph these textured terrains. Its amazing to see that limestone, sandstone and slate formation are present side by side. If you happened visit Ladakh make sure you stop for a moment when you come near to any of the mountains and touch and feel the rock. You would be surprised to see that some of the massive rocks which looks so grand and solid, might just start crimbling with a little nudge at strategic points. Each rock is different in its color texture. People visiting Ladakh often get lost in Monastery, Monks but geology is what makes Ladakh different very different and a photographers delight. How about nature as a sculptor ? Over billions of years nature has so intricately designed these mountains that leave us spell bound. A life time is too short to appreciate the work in progress. I had shot one picture (Not yet posted) which could turn Nubra into a pilgirmage site. When i discussed this with Sridhar over the phone and showed the natural sculpture to Rashid they were amazed (may be i would post it some day). Nature has such craftyness in its anvil that it would leave you spellbound if not you mouth open. What makes Nubra valley green are the 2 rivers, Nubra (Originating from Siachin Glacier in the west flows east and then merges with shyok river to move east) and Shyok which originates from glacier in Himalayas. One would see he wide landscape often patched with bright green. Since Nubra and Shyok are streams with great velocity the sand along its banks are extremely fine and almost like clay. We wanted to drive beyond Panamik but called off. Almost all places where people can visit in Ladakh needs a permit. It's a sensitive area for India. Strategically its important because this area borders with Pakistan and China. You would find Soldiers of Indian Army all over the place. I always went saluted (mix of wave and salute) them, shook hand with them exchanged a few words with them. They are all from all parts of the country, Hariyana, Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Gujrat West Bengal, Orissa, Assam so on and on. This time of year its pleasant but in harsh winter where breathing is a difficulty these people serve the country with elan. While moving to Panamik, while you look on the left you would see the green valley. There are a couple of Monasteries perched on the top of the mountain. They look rather inaccessible. may be a few hours walk and a daunting cross of the Nubra river would take you there. This Photograph : This photograph was taken some where between Sumar and Panamik. This mountain could be Karakoram/Ladakh range. The green patch on the foreground is the kind of greenery what you see in Nubra valley. In the Day and during this time of the year one would come across cattles grazing. Cattles includes Cows, Dzo (A cross breed between Yak and Cow), Yaks (Hardly i did see one in Nubra Valley), a lot of Donkeys and rugged I used to work with this guy, his name is Bruce. He taught me a lot of things in a very understated way - practical stuff, like how to repair 4WD tyre punctures, to diplomatic stuff, like what things you should tell your boss on the phone and what is best left till you get back to the office. Bruce was always willing to show you how to do things, especially if you asked, but he was also willing to step back and let you make mistakes. He and this perentie (Varanus giganteus) - the largest monitor in Australia and second in the world to the Komodo - are eyeing each other with mutual respect! Oregon, Illinois - Twin Cities Zephyr (early 1940s) The Burlington Zephyr in the early 1940s. This is the Twin Cities Zephyr, which ran between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul. This was the second route on which the Burlington Route (or CB&Q) used the Zephyr. There were two trains in each direction every day, the Morning Zephyr and the Afternoon Zephyr. The Zephyr was a new concept in passenger trains, with stainless steel cars by Budd Co. and a diesel engine by General Motors. It had a fixed trainset with a set of wheels joining each pair of cars, rather than each car having two sets of wheels. All of this made the train lighter, and potentially gave higher speed. The first Zephyr in 1934 was the Pioneer Zephyr. a three-car trainset. The Twin Cities Zephyr began with a similar trainset in 1935, but this longer set replaced it in 1936. This trainset stayed in service until 1947. At one time, the Twin Cities Zephyr was the fastest train in the world. It traveled 427 miles (687 km) between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul in six hours, for an average speed (including stops) of 71 mph (114 kph). The highest speed was on the segment between Prairie du Chien and East Dubuque, Illinois, 84 mph (135 kph). When my family went from Rockford to Prairie du Chien, we went to Oregon by bus, where we caught the Zephyr. Oregon is about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Rockford. The train trip was about two hours. It appears that my father took this photo at the Oregon station. Light and shadows suggest that this is the Afternoon Zephyr. Zephyr is not a common word. Mohammad, my Camel Driver, his Camel, their Pyramids This young boy was my camel driver and could not have been more han 8 years old. He was good. First he led the camel (with me up top) through the neighborhood adjoinig the Great Pyramids. Then we headed out into the open Sahara to the back of the Pyraminds. This pic is from the 'back' side and taken by Khalid our accompanying teenager. Khalid's four jobs were to tell Mohammend where to go, make the camel go where Mohammed went, keep the locals from trying to sell me something (no problems) and lastly to earn/negotiate a tip. No problem. They were were both excellent tour guides, friendly and personable. While I was just another paying customer I'm sure, they seemed genuinely interested in me and my life. I must say I had some reservations about taking this camel ride. I first arranged for a private car and English speaking tour guide through the hotel. The hotel mentioned the camel ride was a possiblity. The next morning Mafeddy met me in the hotel exactly on time. He asked if I wanted to take the camel ride. While I do highly recommend the experience, I questioned the early moments. Mafeddy took me into Giza, the backside of Giza, which is covered in Arabian horses and camel stables. And I mean the the real back side consisting of dirt lanes, small adobe/concrete abodes where I could hardly tell the stables apart from the homes. People live very close to these great creatures. In one courtyard, the camel was asleep like a really big dog and the family was sitting just under the porch having the morning tea. Mafeddy stopped at a little freshly cleaned courtyard. It was emaculatily groomed. It is like an open air, rug covered dirt floor, living room. Here the owner, with a puzzling bit of a frown on his face, asks you to sit. Then asks what you want to drink.. You are going to make your first deal in Africa, right now, right in the inner sanctum of Giza. The owner sits down to explain and deal. 'You see the big pyramids, you see the small pyramids,....'. No point haggling, just pay him $15-20 and get going. (Sure you could get it for less but at this point I didn't really want a disgusted camel livery operator picking out some nasty, spittin' camel for me. (Don't tell the camel I said that. She was quite nice.) He took care of me. Gave me bottled water for the trip. Had my camel ready and kneeling down to let me on. He oddlly enough did not move to go with me, but rather that little squirt Mohammed who is siting on the camel with me in the pic walked away pulling the lead rope for my evil-eyed camel (see other pic). From the time we rode deep into the alley ways until the time I actualy rode onto the desert, I was not exacly sure what to expect. The cautious me wondered if I was in deep poo - it WAS all around me. Camel poo, donkey poo, horse poo, chicken poo, okay enough. Nothing was farther from the truth. This was my fav thing to do. You do have to make choices and take responsibility for yourself, but the Egyptian people were always friendly, helpful and at ease with everyone. My suggestion, be a generous tipper. So what if you spend 5 dollars more than the next guy and you might make their day. (Note: This part of Egypt and camel riding is not for everyone. You better be able to embrace - at arms length - a level of disorganization and shall I say 'tidiness' that you probably have only seen on TV. It smells. It's dirty. They are missing trash cans , or maybe every where is a trash can. For gringos, it reminds me of rural Mexico - well Mexico has pyramids to you know. But once you are out of the living area and in the open desert, albeit just the edge, it is as beautiful as an ocean beach. Regarding camels... for tourists... in the desert... in August. It is a wobbly experience to ride these creatures. Not frantic, they just slowly plod along. You will sweat though. It is hot (similar to sweet South Georgia) and you need to relax your body and roll with the motion of the mammal.) Badshahi Mosque, Lahore, Pakistan. My Historical P A K I S T A N. Construction of the Badshahi Mosque was ordered in May 1671 by the sixth Mughal Emperor, Aurangzeb, who assumed the title 'Alamgir', meaning 'Conqueror of the World.' Construction took about two years and was completed in April 1673[1]. The construction work was carried out under the supervision of Aurangzeb's foster brother Muzaffar Hussain (also known as Fidaie Khan Koka) who was appointed Governor of Lahore in May 1671 and held this post until 1675. He was also Master of Ordnance to the Emperor. The mosque was built opposite the Lahore Fort, illustrating its stature in the Mughal Empire. In conjunction with the building of the mosque, a new gate was built at the Fort, named Alamgiri Gate after the Emperor. Badshahi Mosque was damaged and misused during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Sikh Ruler of the Punjab. The four domes on top of its four minarets were used by the Sikhs for cannon practice and destroyed. This tapestry, in form of a scroll, is national craft and is bright, sprightly and visually extensive. Made using the traditional carpet techniques of the Tibetan people, it is a fine example of Tibetan artwork. Tibetan carpets are made of local wools and coloured by dyes refined from plants and minerals. The assorted bright colours on the carpets reflect the vigorous and optimistic characters of the Tibetan people. On the tapestry, the clouds are pictured holding up Potala, the Buddhist Holy Land, while the rainbow acts as a bridge linking Tibet and Macao. A white crane flies over the bridge carrying messages of celebration and best wishes from the nationalities in Tibet. The smiling sprays and clouds depict the joy of Tibet and other Chinese nationalities at Macao’s return to Chinese sovereignty. Oregon, Illinois - Twin Cities Zephyr (early 1940s) The Burlington Zephyr in the early 1940s. This is the Twin Cities Zephyr, which ran between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul. This was the second route on which the Burlington Route (or CB&Q) used the Zephyr. There were two trains in each direction every day, the Morning Zephyr and the Afternoon Zephyr. The Zephyr was a new concept in passenger trains, with stainless steel cars by Budd Co. and a diesel engine by General Motors. It had a fixed trainset with a set of wheels joining each pair of cars, rather than each car having two sets of wheels. All of this made the train lighter, and potentially gave higher speed. The first Zephyr in 1934 was the Pioneer Zephyr. a three-car trainset. The Twin Cities Zephyr began with a similar trainset in 1935, but this longer set replaced it in 1936. This trainset stayed in service until 1947. At one time, the Twin Cities Zephyr was the fastest train in the world. It traveled 427 miles (687 km) between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul in six hours, for an average speed (including stops) of 71 mph (114 kph). The highest speed was on the segment between Prairie du Chien and East Dubuque, Illinois, 84 mph (135 kph). When my family went from Rockford to Prairie du Chien, we went to Oregon by bus, where we caught the Zephyr. Oregon is about 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Rockford. The train trip was about two hours. It appears that my father took this photo at the Oregon station. Light and shadows suggest that this is the Afternoon Zephyr. Zephyr is not a common word.
