Tibetan Wool Carpets
The gift was presented by the Government of Tibet Autonomous Region to celebrate Macao’s return to the motherland. This tapestry, in form of a scroll, is national craft and is bright, sprightly and visually extensive. Made using the traditional carpet techniques of the Tibetan people, it is a fine example of Tibetan artwork.
Tibetan carpets are made of local wools and coloured by dyes refined from plants and minerals. The assorted bright colours on the carpets reflect the vigorous and optimistic characters of the Tibetan people.
On the tapestry, the clouds are pictured holding up Potala, the Buddhist Holy Land, while the rainbow acts as a bridge linking Tibet and Macao. A white crane flies over the bridge carrying messages of celebration and best wishes from the nationalities in Tibet. The smiling sprays and clouds depict the joy of Tibet and other Chinese nationalities at Macao’s return to Chinese sovereignty.
