Shiny pollen-covered bee on white button flower

Shiny pollen-covered bee on white button flower

Explore Nov 5, 2011 #109

The largest ecological impact of European colonization may have been wreaked by a small, seemingly benign domestic animal: the European honeybee.

“In early 1622, a ship arrived in Jamestown… loaded with exotic entities for the colonists to experiment with: grapevine cuttings, silkworm eggs, and beehives. Most bees pollinate only a few species; they tend to be fussy about where they live. European honeybees, promiscuous beasts, reside almost anywhere and pollinate almost anything in sight. Quickly, they swarmed from their hives and set up shop through the Americas.

The English imported the bees for honey, not to pollinate crops—pollination wasn’t’ widely understood until the late 19th century—but feral honeybees pollinated farms and orchards up and down the East Coast anyway. So critical to European success was the honeybee that Indians came to view it as a harbinger of invasion.”
“America, Found and Lost”, Charles C. Mann, National Geographic May 2007, pg 51

Honey bees (or honeybees) are a subset of bees in the genus Apis, primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests out of wax. Currently, there are only 7 recognized species of honey bee with a total of 44 subspecies. The first Apis bees appear in the fossil record at the Eocene–Oligocene boundary, in European deposits. The origin of these prehistoric honey bees does not necessarily indicate that Europe is where the genus originated. There are few known fossil deposits in South Asia, the suspected region of honeybee origin, and fewer still have been thoroughly studied.

he flower... Button Snakeroot or Rattlesnakemaster

Don't worry the plant doesn't attract rattlesnakes! The name is derived from an old belief that the roots could be used to heal rattlesnake bites. Resembling something out of the Southwest United States, Rattlesnake master has an arid, heated look. Perhaps it's the yucca-like foliage, resembling its desert counterparts. Or the stiffness of the plant, reminiscent of evolutionary wonders that stand erect in even the most blinding heat. Or the flowers, nestled deep within a hardened carapace.

It is quite a striking plant. Ideal for gardens as specimens or in small groups, this native species will add texture and color to almost any perennial border. Stiff and only 1-4" wide, the sometimes 3-foot long leaves have small prickles along the edges. They are parallel-veined, that is their veins run lengthwise, unbranched from the base of the leaf to the tip.

Borne in spherical, thistle-like heads around 1" diameter, the individual flowers are a greenish-white and are surrounded by larger pointed bracts.The fruit essentially looks the same as the flowers, only darkening to a dull brown and remaining on the stalks for the remainder of the season. They are sometimes gathered and used in dried flower arrangements, but provide equal interest in the winter landscape. Each seedhead contains many 1/4" long seeds (mericarps).

Whenever it looks like rain, my husband spreads our flower pots out in the yard to get them watered for free. Had to wait quite long before a short shower even though it looked and felt very stormy all day.

I tend to be easily affected by the weather. With the grey overcast sky today, I felt terribly lazy all day. Oh well, good day to lie around at home and do some reading. I'm afraid I won't get all my summer reading pile done before school starts next week... Sure sign that the weather has been good most of the summer!

Children of the sweet peas that flowered three years ago

I found an old re-used envelope in my cupboard. There was written "Lathyrus odoratus". I thougt they might have been there in the cupboard for too long, but no: they bloom now so sweetly! And oh boy, they're so fragrant! Not a surprise: they're (probably hybridized) children of heirloom varieties with smaller flowers and bigger scent.

I just ADORE this flower so much. So delicate, slender and romantic, so sweet and small. And a climber, which means one doesn't have to bow to sniff the bloom!

Dandelion Close-Up

Dandelion Close-Up

Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. They are native to Eurasia and North America, and two species, T. officinale and T. erythrospermum, are found as weeds worldwide. Both species are edible in their entirety. The common name dandelion (pronounced /?d?nd?la?.?n/ DAN-di-ly-?n, from French dent-de-lion, meaning lion's tooth) is given to members of the genus, and like other members of the Asteraceae family, they have very small flowers collected together into a composite flower head. Each single flower in a head is called a floret. Many Taraxacum species produce seeds asexually by apomixis, where the seeds are produced without pollination, resulting in offspring that are genetically identical to the parent plant.

The species of Taraxacum are tap-rooted biennial or perennial herbaceous plants, native to temperate areas of the Old World.

The leaves are 5–25 cm long or longer, simple and basal, entire or lobed, forming a rosette above the central taproot. The flower heads are yellow to orange colored, and are open in the daytime but closed at night. The heads are borne singly on a hollow stem (scape) that rises 1–10 cm or more above the leaves and exudes a milky sap (latex) when broken. A rosette may produce several flowering stems at a time. The flower heads are 2–5 cm in diameter and consist entirely of ray florets. The flower heads mature into spherical ‘clocks’ containing many single-seeded fruits called achenes. Each achene is attached to a pappus of fine hairs, which enable wind-aided dispersal over long distances.

The flower head is surrounded by bracts (sometimes mistakenly called sepals) in two series. The inner bracts are erect until the seeds mature, then flex downward to allow the seeds to disperse; the outer bracts are always reflexed downward. Some species drop the ‘parachute’ from the achenes; the hair-like parachutes are called pappus, and they are modified sepals. Between the pappus and the achene, there is a stalk called a beak, which elongates as the fruit matures. The beak breaks off from the achene quite easily, separating the seed from the parachute.

A number of species of Taraxacum are seed dispersed ruderals that rapidly colonize disturbed soil, especially the Common dandelion (T. officinale), which has been introduced over much of the temperate world. After flowering is finished, the dandelion flower head dries out for a day or two. The dried petals and stamens drop off, the bracts reflex (curve backwards), and the parachute ball opens into a full sphere. Finally, the seed-bearing parachutes expand and lift out of it. The parachute drops off the achene when it strikes an obstacleAfter the seed is released, the parachutes lose their feathered structure and take on a fuzzy, cotton-like appearance, often called ‘dandelion snow’

ELEGY - by Thomas Gray (1751)

ELEGY - by Thomas Gray (1751)

AN ELEGY, &c.

THE Curfeu tolls the Knell of parting Day,
The lowing Herd winds slowly o'er the Lea,
The Plow-man homeward plods his weary Way,
And leaves the World to Darkness, and to me.

Now fades the glimmering Landscape on the Sight,
And all the Air a solemn Stillness holds;
Save where the Beetle wheels his droning Flight,
And drowsy Tinklings lull the distant Folds.

Save that from yonder Ivy-mantled Tow'r
The mopeing Owl does to the Moon complain
Of such, as wand'ring near her sacred Bow'r,
Molest her ancient solitary Reign.

Beneath those rugged Elms, that Yew-Tree's Shade,
Where heaves the Turf in many a mould'ring Heap,
Each in his narrow Cel for ever laid,
The rude Forefathers of the Hamlet sleep.

The breezy Call of Incense-breathing Morn,
The Swallow twitt'ring from the Straw-built Shed,
The Cock's shrill Clarion, or the ecchoing Horn,
No more shall wake them from their lowly Bed.

For them no more the blazing Hearth shal burn,
Or busy Houswife ply her Evening Care:
No Children run to lisp their Sire's Return,
Or climb his Knees the envied Kiss to share.

Oft did the Harvest to their Sickle yield,
Their Furrow oft the stubborn Glebe has broke;
How jocund did they drive their Team afield!
How bow'd the Woods beneath their sturdy Stroke!

Let not Ambition mock their useful Toil,
Their homely Joys and Destiny obscure;
Nor Grandeur hear with a disdainful Smile,
The short and simple Annals of the Poor.

The Boast of Heraldry, the Pomp of Pow'r,
And all that Beauty, all that Wealth e'er gave,
Awaits alike th' inevitable Hour.
The Paths of Glory lead but to the Grave.

Forgive, ye Proud, th' involuntary Fault,
If Memory to these no Trophies raise,
Where thro' the long-drawn Isle and fretted Vault
The pealing Anthem swells the Note of Praise.

Can storied Urn or animated Bust
Back to its Mansion call the fleeting Breath?
Can Honour's Voice provoke the silent Dust,
Or Flatt'ry sooth the dull cold Ear of Death!

Perhaps in this neglected Spot is laid
Some Heart once pregnant with celestial Fire,
Hands that the Reins of Empire might have sway'd,
Or wak'd to Extacy the living Lyre.

But Knowledge to their Eyes her ample Page
Rich with the Spoils of Time did ne'er unroll;
Chill Penury repress'd their noble Rage,
And froze the genial Current of the Soul.

Full many a Gem of purest Ray serene,
The dark unfathom'd Caves of Ocean bear:
Full many a Flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its Sweetness on the desart Air.

Some Village-Hampden that with dauntless Breast
The little Tyrant of his Fields withstood;
Some mute inglorious Milton here may rest,
Some Cromwell guiltless of his Country's Blood.

Th'Applause of list'ning Senates to command,
The Threats of Pain and Ruin to despise,
To scatter Plenty o'er a smiling Land,
And read their Hist'ry in a Nation's Eyes

Their Lot forbad: nor circumscrib'd alone
Their growing Virtues, but their Crimes confin'd;
Forbad to wade through Slaughter to a Throne,
And shut the Gates of Mercy on Mankind,

The struggling Pangs of conscious Truth to hide,
To quench the Blushes of ingenuous Shame,
Or heap the Shrine of Luxury and Pride
With Incense, kindled at the Muse's Flame.

Far from the madding Crowd's ignoble Strife,
Their sober Wishes never learn'd to stray;
Along the cool sequester'd Vale of Life
They kept the noiseless Tenor of their Way.

Yet ev'n these Bones from Insult to protect
Some frail Memorial still erected nigh,
With uncouth Rhimes and shapeless Sculpture deck'd,
Implores the passing Tribute of a Sigh.

Their Name, their Years, spelt by th' unletter'd Muse,
The Place of Fame and Elegy supply:
And many a holy Text around she strews,
That teach the rustic Moralist to dye.

For who to dumb Forgetfulness a Prey,
This pleasing anxious Being e'er resign'd,
Left the warm Precencts of the chearful Day,
Nor cast one longing ling'ring Look behind!

On some fond Breast the parting Soul relies,
Some pious Drops the closing Eye requires;
Ev'n from the Tomb the Voice of Nature cries
Awake, and faithful to her wonted Fires.

For thee, who mindful of th' unhonour'd Dead
Dost in these Lines their artless Tale relate;
If chance, by lonely Contemplation led,
Some hidden Spirit shall inquire thy Fate,

Haply some hoary-headed Swain may say,
'Oft have we seen him at the Peep of Dawn
'Brushing with hasty Steps the Dews away
'To meet the Sun upon the upland Lawn.

'There at the Foot of yonder nodding Beech
'That wreathes its old fantastic Roots so high,
'His listless Length at Noontide wou'd he stretch,
And pore upon the Brook that babbles by.

'Hard by yon Wood, now frowning as in Scorn,
'Mutt'ring his wayward Fancies he wou'd rove,
'Now drooping, woeful wan, like one forlorn,
'Or craz'd with Care, or cross'd in hopeless Love.

'One morn I miss'd him on the custom'd Hill,
'Along the Heath, and near his fav'rite Tree;
'Another came; nor yet beside the Rill,
'Nor up the La

Mooncake Festival!

Mooncake Festival!

haha at last my internet connection is fine. I missed Flickr! Yesterday was mooncake festival celebrated by the chinese.
Heres a little infos i know bout mooncake festival. Mooncake Festival celebrates the birthday of the moon and its also known as Mid Autumn Fest. Normally this day brings the family together including eating mooncakes. I remember I once attended a tradisional mooncake celebration that includes prayers, many kinds of food, sitting at the veranda, children will b singing mooncake fest songs, adults drinking tea, talking and of cos the lantern carrying tradition!
Children will normally b playing paper made lanterns with candles int he mid. haha but these days, theres lanterns function by batteries and music.
See those rounded mooncakes? some has egg yolks in the centre tht symbolises the moon. The traditional fillings of mooncakes are red bean paste, lotus seed paste [my fav =p], coconut, black sesame, green tea.. n many more. The modern filings we can find in the market today includes white coffee with choc bits, tiramisu, and even durian! lol some even put raspberry fillings

Theres actually many stories on the origins of mooncakes. Theres a legend of a lady called Chang Er, also knwon as the lady of the moon tht flew to the moon. Ten sun existed back then, and a long drought persisted, so the emperor asked for archers to shoot down the suns. The best archer was Chang Er's husband that shot down 9suns. He was then given immortality pills and bcame a tyrant with his new power. To save the country, Chang Er stole the pill and swallowed it herseldf, then she flew to the bright moon and became the Moon Goddess. It is said that she lives with a rabbit and a cassia tree, that is why mooncakes are stamped with designs of moon lady, the jade rabbit, or grooves of cassia trees.

Sounds irrelevant? theres another more logical story that talks about the harsh ruling of the Mongols on the China in the 14th century. In order for the chinese to send secret messages of uprising the mongols, they embedded informations in th cakes so when the chinese cut the mooncakes to eat, they will know about the secret messages.

Nowadays, some bakers put printed peaces of paper on mooncakes with words of wisdom so its not a surprise to find one! =p

The Artist in Me

The Artist in Me

This layout was published in the April 2009 issue of Digital Artist Magazine.

Journaling:
I have always done some form of artistry in my life since I was a little girl. Being able to express myself in many different art forms has been such a wonderful outlet for my creativity. I discovered digital scrapbooking nearly three years ago now and it has become such an important part of my life. Not only has it opened so many creative doors for me but it has been such a wonderful way to record all the little moments in my everyday life that are so very important to me. It’s the simple things in life that make up all of our cherished memories that we wish we could remember forever. Scrapbooking has allowed me to record these little moments and freeze them in time so my family and I can look back whenever we wish to relive one of those precious moments. I am so thankful that I discovered scrapbooking, whether it is digital, traditional of hybrid. For me the true joy of scrapbooking is a combination of telling my stories, sharing them with everyone and being able to express the artist in me in any way I feel.
