Peek-a-boo
Peek-a-boo and Spooky Gulches are two very tight, very popular slot canyons near Escalante, Utah. We made a loop hike out of them, going up Peek-a-boo and back down Spooky. They're very different from each other, despite being practically next to each other. Peek-a-boo is twisty and pretty while Spooky is so tight you have to turn sideways to make it through. Both fun, each in their own way.
Imagine being in here when it's raining upstream - I don't think so.

Elmo's nose and Teddy's nose. Post surgery.
On Wednesday morning 30th Jan 2008, Elmo showed signs of discomfort, was gagging, and began to bloat around his abdomen. Sometimes, due to his list of allergies, he experiences strange symptoms- and so we tried to calm him and let it pass, but to no avail.
We took him to the vets expecting to hear that he had colic or a similar condition, to be told emergency surgery needed to take place, his stomach had twisted under the weight of the gas in his stomach.
Surgery on Elmo is very dangerous as his server allergic reactions do not allow anything to be injected into his body. The surgery on a normal dog has a 50/50% chance of survival. Elmo was given 20% chance of pulling through. We were devastated.
Elmo has quite a history. He is 9. At 18 months old he was disabled is all legs due to over stretched ligaments. He cannot be inoculated due to his allergies and so does not have any protection against usual doggy disease. He can only eat organic chicken legs, and drink mineral water. (We found this through trial and error.) Elmo is so allergic, he has been diagnosed as being allergic to himself- the yeast his skin produces in excess. He has two back discs about to pop out. His trachea is collapsing, causing a strange bark. He has a tail bent in two points at a 90 degree angle. 2 years ago he has an emergency castration due to a torsion, which he, due to an excellent vet, managed to pull through. He is a delightful, extremely happy and active dog, despite all of this.
But now this. He pulled through the surgery which saved his life. Yet he was going into shock, which could cause complications. The toxins that had been trapped could have caused heart problems- and because of the pressure of the bloat against his veins, vital organs were not getting the blood supply they needed.
Amazingly lucky- we were told the torsion was serve, but had only happened recently. He was transferred to another vet for that night. He remained stable. He was transferred to an intensive care surgery when he showed no sign of improvement. Soon after, thinking it was less stressful we took him home, where he remains. He has perked up, and has a stomach tube in which we feed him antibiotics and painkillers, which we cannot inject, due to the allergies.
We hope the little guy will be ok. He is not a usual dog and incredibly dependant on his humans. This next week is critical. We beg that he will pull through without infection.
"This condition in the dog has a sudden onset, usually within one to two hours of eating a large meal. The dog is first breathless and, if examined closely, the abdomen is excessively large.
The dog will stand, lie still, or move only with caution. He will generally pass feces and gas so that eventually the entire gut with the exception of the stomach has been emptied. There are often attempts at vomiting although these attempts are rarely successful. In a period varying from one-half to three hours, the stomach becomes grossly distended, and there is severe dyspnea, or difficulty in breathing. The dog may live up to 36 hours but many will die within one to two hours. "
This was written on Feb 3rd 2008. He has now fully recovered and is the same incredibly happy dog that he has always been. 1st July 2008.

Again, Thank you America, for managing to show the world that we aren't racist, that we don't hate everyone who doesn't fit a certain mold. You make me happy.
I've had these tights for a few years, I bought them for a masquerade party. It's one pair of tights, one black leg, one white leg. I didn't think I had them still, and late last night I saw them in my drawer, and got this idea.
Today was a good day. I woke up, still in Justin's arms. The first thing I said was, "Baby, you're going to be late for work." To which he replied, "I told them I wasn't coming in today." My baby called off work to spend the day with me! Love it! We spent a while in bed talking about stuff, and I told him who our new president was (he fell asleep around 9:30pm, and I did tell him at some point, but he was so out of it he didn't remember. We made breakfast. We went on a walk through the park. We watched TV. We cuddled. We made dinner. Fanfreakingtastic.

Day 11 - 09/20/08 - Newest Angel
Nothing compares to the joy of holding a baby in your arms - their peaceful sleep, the little smiles that they make while sleeping, oh and their smell! Not the gotta-change-them-now kind of smell, but just that baby smell.
This is my 2 week old niece, Aubrey. This is my first time seeing her, and she just slept the whole time. I can stare at her all night.
She was born the day after we all went out for dinner for her daddy's birthday, and her daddy made a wish (or so we think) that she comes out either that night or the day after, since mommy was getting a little impatient... and whaddaya know, her mommy went to labor right the next day!
She was so tiny and adorable. It made me want to have a baby, but then I thought about how much I love sleep and only worrying about ME, so I changed my mind. Boyfriend and I do plan on having a baby in the near future, but not anytime soon. Baby can wait. I'm still young.

All Natural Chunky Pumpkin Pie
This is what we did with part of an organically grown pumpkin from our squash patch. Absolutely delicious with no cancer-causing flavorings, msg, preservatives, nor fillers.... When I make homemade desserts from scratch, I do not use any processed sugar (not white nor brown) and I also do not use those creepy harmful modern sugar alternatives. The only type of sweetener I use is syrup made from tree-tapping local trees, sorghum, molasses or raw honey (and very little at that, so you may enjoy the flavor of the squash or what have you).
By the way... tastes great with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream. : )

Virtual Sexuality
Society simply can not address all the classifications of gender and sexuality. by simply identifying a character as straight or gay it limits the spectrum of psychological profiles. this is why our government should not create social contracts merely on who we like... but our civilization needs to create structures that reflect our architecture.
there is less an issue of gender orientation and more a dynamic of if a person is an objectifier or an objectified. is a person dominant or receiving. does a person get off on being shot at or not? being that this world is virtual... it doesn't even work because it is a waste... it is a sacrifice... a martyrdom of time we all choose. we are all there to be submissive to the machine. in life there is an architecture to female submission in sexuality. babies can be made. If I agree to get shot at on xbox with labor and pain do I get the joy of creating other lives?
this assumes that it is just a game. I think politics, sex and religion have no place in the virtual world exactly because they do. it is an example of how transparency must be limited. we are all there to be submissive to the machine and therefor our hidden agendas might have symbolic implications that destroy the community. We are all in labor with each other for the system which is our child.
There is a sexual dynamic to virtual hunting and this is why it might be threatening to bring in identity into this. certainly the industry opened themselves up to something when they created Tomb Raider and Street Fighter. now the question is what does a gay character do to a game when the very game is a play at submission. I'm certain there are no coded answers to these questions. we invite sexuality into the sphere. the virtual vixens are in fact very "lesbian" esque... and of course they also create a male hetero fetish. They are muscular and they are aggressive... the industry created this out of it's own desire to sell games. but in fact it is popular because it appeals to a desire for men to submit. to role play something that they can't in life.
it is a matter of health to allow a certain level of libidinal desire that might be damaging to oneself. we as human beings might even be more healthy because we experiment with this other side. this duality. I'm not sure this should be coded as homosexual or transgender. if this element is dangerous to the game then it should not be an option.
the entire market for this is because the natural male instinct for hunting and fighting is taken away from society. people are repressed. if they invite the natural fetish into the sphere... then it is their fault. The irony of virtual combat is that it involves submission... and perhaps all combat is submissive to a larger machine. Is it no wonder that sexuality and the military must be so contained. A person who invites the system out of libidinal desire has no place because there is no boundary. Certainly a great fighter might enjoy it, but how dangerous to have such a zealous warrior. These desires need to be contained and yet allowed in it's place.

What's good flickrites!
I can't believe how far behind I am on this project. I have over 10 days worth of photos to process and upload.
I have no idea what happened with my time. Once my grand baby was born, I started taking on so many projects that I let time get away from me.
I've taken to the virtual felt like a fiend. I play everyday for at least an hour. I study poker strategy on a daily and I try to commit what I learned to memory to better my game. Now, I can honestly say that my game is much, much better but I am nowhere near what I would even consider a good poker player to be. This way I can keep my ego in check and let my bankroll grow rather than shrink.
I'm still working out just about everyday. That takes a toll on me, but I really love it. I'm in the best shape of my life and I couldn't feel better. Well, maybe I could but I feel pretty damn good now.
Photography has taken a hit. I still take my photographs daily but I haven't put the effort into it that I have before. It has become more about picking out the best snapshots of the day rather than the effort going into the pre- and post- work involved. I still love this project and I still have time to turn up the heat. I just hope that I have the desire to do so.
Anyways, I've babbled enough and I promise to keep up with the posting and processing of my photos in a more regular manner.
Maybe I'll post twice a day until I catch up.

We were to design a stencil that portrayed an issue in society that we felt strongly about. The iconic image of a stork carrying a baby being gunned down by a teenage girl was to shock people and highlight the relaxed attitude to teenage pregnancy.

Eastern Oregon/Portland Family Trip July 2009
I send a lot of postcards when traveling. Sorry if I didn't get one out to you.
Mom & I went on a five day driving trip through Eastern, Oregon.
Some highlights: Outsider Art Monument: Petersen Rock Garden in Redmond (friendliest peacocks I’ve ever met!). The John Day Fossil Area was amazing – the Painted Hills and Sheep Unit. At the latter we went down a trail called something like “Island back in time” and were mesmerized by the strange chalky green rocky landscape with no life growing from it. We were lucking out with 75 and Sunny in a place that can get 110 this time of year. The new Paleontology Museum is very interesting. I became obsessed with touring cyclists and wished I was on my bike. Even saw a group of 4 punk-style riders, with just boxes and blankets strapped to the back of their bikes. We barely made the last tour at the Kam Wah Chung Museum in John Day not knowing that you can only visit with a guide. This old apothecary/store/house set in what once was a Chinatown was really interesting to me. Then on to Baker City, Oregon which is really a great town – I walked around at Sunset and thought about setting up a portable press shop here for a month. We stayed in the Geiser Grand Hotel, which isn’t as expensive as you’d think, and my oh my were those sheets soft. The next day for the firs half of the we visited the National Oregon Trail Interpretative Center a top Flagstaff Hill, 5 miles outside of town. The museum got a thumbs down from me (too general, busy, not into taxidermy horses), But the center and walking trails are worth it and I loved visiting the actual Oregon trail and seeing the old wagon ruts. Mom and I realized that we could visit Hell’s Canyon afterall. I really wanted to go, but we didn’t want to hit gravel roads. We found there was a road to an overlook that we could take on our way to Joseph. We stopped in Halfway, Oregon and I got a chocolate milkshake. At the overlook in Hells Canyon there is a pretty amazing view of the nation’s deepest Canyon. You can’t see the floor or anything, and you feel far away, but it was still beautiful. In Joseph we didn’t like our stinky overpriced smelling cabin or the fact that everyone and their family seemed to be around the Lake in the Wallowas, but I took advantage of the pool/hot tub and beat my mom in Scrabble even though she made two whole words. In the morning we played mini golf at the resort while a couple long haired boys watched us. Mom loves Mini golf! We were going back and forth on whether we should take the Tram to the top of Mt Henry, we heard it was good, but wondering if we should get a move on. But luckily we decided to go. The weather was great and I couldn’t believe the Swiss Gondola style tram went an entire mile up. We were at over 8000 feet! At the top we were greeted by a gopher and a chipmunk, little did we know that we’d meet many more “friends” on our visit up there. We walked around the trails and had a very chipper time. On the way out of Joseph we stopped at the local county museum – I asked the friendly senior ladies what they liked most in the museum. One lady said the electric curler (a scary monstrosity!) and the other lady said a grade school exhibit from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Fair. I myself was amused by the Moonshine exhibit. I gave the one lady a painting I made of the electric curler and she was so pleased! We then drove through a few small towns and headed towards Pendleton, getting loss in La Grande on the way. Pendleton was so much smaller than I thought (all the round-up/blanket hype), but I enjoyed the murals, and my mom and walked on the riverwalk which was buggy at dusk. We played another game of Scrabble where I almost won, until I made a stupid fatal error on my second to last turn. In the morning (Saturday) we walked around town, but nothing was open and we looked like hick tourists. I guess all the action was on Friday night. Finally a few shops opened, but every one seemed to be selling old stuff – some of it good (the Curio shop!) some bad (beanie babies, and romance novel, now really!) And everyone wanted a lot of money for crap. We headed out of town (backtracking a few miles) to go to the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute which in on the Indian Reservation. Right before we stopped for gas, and waited to be served (can’t pump your own gas in Oregon), but no one came, and then we realized, oh on the reservation you pump your own gas! The museum is past the casino that had a full parking lot. The museum lot only had three cars. I was really impressed with the exhibits and design and learned a lot about five Indian groups from the area. Outside it was heating up, planning on getting up to 100, I walked around displays of different kinds of Indian housing.
We then headed down the Gorge towards Portland and watched the scenery slowly change from beige to green. We crossed the toll bridge at Hood River to Bingen to meet my Sister Sarah and 3 ? year old nephew Andy who were coming
Young zebra nursing
Tarangire National Park, Tanzania - A young zebra nurses milk from its mother. The Zebra is a member of the horse family, native to eastern and southern Africa. They are best known for their distinctive white and black stripes which come in different patterns unique to each individual. Zoologists believe that the stripes act as a camouflage mechanism. This is accomplished in several ways. First, the vertical striping helps the zebra hide in grass. While seeming absurd at first glance considering that grass is neither white nor black, it is supposed to be effective against the zebra's main predator, the lion, which is colour blind. Theoretically a zebra standing still in tall grass may not be noticed at all by a lion. Additionally, since zebras are herd animals, the stripes may help to confuse predators - a number of zebras standing or moving close together may appear as one large animal, making it more difficult for the lion to pick out any single zebra to attack. A herd of zebras scattering to avoid a predator will also represent to that predator a confused mass of vertical stripes travelling in multiple directions making it difficult for the predator to track an individual visually as it separates from its herdmates, although biologists have never observed lions appearing confused by zebra stripes.
A more recent theory, supported by experiment, posits that the disruptive colouration is also an effective means of confusing the visual system of the blood-sucking tsetse fly. Alternative theories include that the stripes coincide with fat patterning beneath the skin, serving as a thermoregulatory mechanism for the zebra, and that wounds sustained disrupt the striping pattern to clearly indicate the fitness of the animal to potential mates.
