More Nautical Salvage--my rebuilt Waterski Adirondack chair.

"Found Art" of a favorite sort--this chair is fashioned out of discarded waterskis. Actually, built twice, since a few of the components rotted and had to be replaced.

It's surprisingly comfortable, and holds true to my appreciation for recycled building materials, and nautical salvage. It looks great on a houseboat deck, too; although I'm avoiding an initial mistake that was made (varethane finish didn't shed water--but rather held it in, creating rapid rot)--in this resurrection, I'm soaking the components in linseed oil before the final protective coat of spar varnish with UV filter is applied.

A philosophical dilemna arose during this re-build. The chair wanted a heavy sanding, but part of the charm was the patina, and where that original waterski paint job remained, I felt that it should be retained--otherwise it could have easily been constructed out of lumberyard stock, not actual water skis. (Of course, the skis have their own characteristic bow).

So--a few sunny days and a bit of varnish and this project will be done! But it's already achieved the ultimate award--the Wife's Seal of Approval.

"You should collect used waterskis and make more of these," she suggested. "I know you could sell them, and you'd do well."

Clearly, I've been wearing my "What Should I Do With Myself?" t-shirt. Presumably my performance of "happy retired duffer", fools no one. My rootless search for identity and purpose is laid bare. But now the course has been charted, the quest has been cast; unused waterskies will be furnitures fast!

"Painting a landscape feels like flying, such a welcome change of pace from still life. I love the loose flow of buttery pigment as it courses, glides, drifts, circulates, skims, oozes, swirls, and rolls off the fine tiny hairs of my brush with a story of its own to tell. The brush charts its own path catching light off vapors of layered atmosphere, fluid sweep of free-flowing water, or the crisp rustle of dry swaying grasses.

It feels so natural to me, I can't imagine approaching a landscape in any other way. To labor over each exacting blade of grass, every ripple on the water's surface, or the intricate patterns of bark on a branch, would condense it all into a frozen frame of a girdle to sit lifeless and idle for all eternity. In a landscape, I want to capture the movement of breathing spirit. I want the viewer to feel the chill of the wind that's blowing through my hair, the warm rays of afternoon sun that sit perched on a shoulder, and to detect the decaying scent of autumn rising from the mists off the bank of cool waters.

The artist job is to take it all in but then to simplify and filter down to the barest of it all, that which contains the whole. I still have miles of canvas to go but am loving my journey along the way."

Window Cleaners

I don't know if they planned this when they designed The Sage building but cleaning the windows is tricky. So much so, they have devised a new method.

It is similar to bungee jumping except that on the ground there is a large vat of soapy water in which the cleaners 'dip'. On the way back up they splash themselves all over the windows, like human sponges. Someone on the ground then positions a vat of clean water for them to rinse the soap off the building.

They call the new method 'Spongy-jumping' or 'Spongebobbing'.

Laura Plantation, LA ~ window

The Laura Plantation dates back to 1805 and is one of the few Creole plantations left with many of its buildings extant. The main house unfortunately was 80% destroyed in a 2004 fire, but has been rebuilt utilizing traditional construction methods. It is on the National Register #92001842.

Little Anole Bob

24" x 24" vivarium. Hamming for the camera is my anole, Bob. You can kinda see the flowers from 2 orchids (jewel and a moth). Both decided that now would be a good time to bloom. Besides Bob, there are 2 green, tree frogs and two fire-bellied toads. Bob and the frogs hang out in the plants and hollow log at the top - being the arboreal creatures that they are. The pair of fire-bellies spend most of the time in the water (1/2 of terrarium floor, about 3"-6" deep), sometimes settling on the gravel/sphagnum moss on the 'dry' side. With the exception of two, potted phalaenopsis, all the plants (jewel orchid, pothos, philodendron, etc) are rooted in the saturated gravel/moss or grow directly in the pool (crypts, java moss, dwarf sag). I use a canister filter, returning the water through a hollow 'stump' mounted on the back wall, creating a little (albeit noisy) waterfall. Vivarium is about 2 yrs old now.

Lippy Update

There was another recent case of fin rot in the aquarium and unfortunately Alby, the neglected non-pictured fish in the aquarium, did not survive through the ordeal. I was on the third day of administering minocycline treatment when I just saw Alby hanging upside down being sucked into the filter, I may have started antibiotic treatment a little too late. Fortunately, all the other fish survived including the Lippy, the over-photographed goldfish.

I might have to get another fish to replace Alby, the Lipster is looking a little too lonely in the tank.

Oh and please don't mind the dinged up aquarium, I've been abusing it for 7 years now.

I Bet a Small Block Would Fit

Having re-installed my car's intake silencer and let my subscription to "Sport Compact Car" run out years ago, you could say that I'm a bit out of touch with current custom trendz. That's not to say that I'm not interested in cars anymore. I just have to figure out what this "growing up" stuff is all about before I drop large sums of money (which I don't have) on something so frivolous. I'm sure "growing up" will involve cars to some extent as my wife and I have a '73 Standard Beetle which we're fiending to fix up, but the import tuner scene is not likely to be my scene, if and when we do get into it. That being said, I do enjoy my Impreza, and if it didn't have to have a somewhat responsible appearance I'd most likely enjoy spiffing it up a bit.

About a month ago I was at a cruise night/ car show with my wife and father-in-law. I was reminded of a look that I had seen before and really liked. Way back in history ( way before me, anyway) when a guy just wanted to make his car go fast and didn't want to fuss too much with a paint job he might spray a coat of flat black paint on it and be done with it. The first time I saw a car done like this I was not quite sure what to think. It looked a bit like they sprayed a primer coat but no finish coat. As I got accustomed to seeing this I realized that I kind of like it. It was a pretty menacing look. All business with on extra flash. I mentioned to her that if I were to do something with my car I'd want to do a kind of 50's hot rod style make over with a flat black paint job and smoothie rims. That would be pretty unique.

A few days ago I was in the local Auto Zone buying 4 quarts of synthetic oil and a filter. I glanced to the side as I waited in line to pay and I couldn't believe what I saw. "Sport Compact Car" magazine was running a feature on a new STi Impreza done up old school. Sigh. Not only had they had the same idea with the same flat black paint, they used essentially the same car! I paid and left in disbelief. The next day, I decided to check out the SCC website. I found no information about the matte Impreza, but I did find (of all things) a flat black Mini Cooper S. It was a very cool car, but my bubble had been burst. I guess it's time to look for a new unusual thing to daydream about.

"Wet" - Bora Bora Nui Resort

Bora Bora: an island described by Lonely Planet as a "hedonistic playground" satiating the core desires for obscenely unnecessary luxuries you didn't even know existed.

To be fair, if you spend some time making the circuit around the mainland you'll run across a smattering of campgrounds, backpacker pensions, and windsurfer hideouts. But, most people don't spend their time on the mainland. Rather, immediately upon arrival at the island's airport (inconveniently but awesomely located on a motu--small sandy island--in the middle of the lagoon) guests are ferried to their luxury resorts (most of which are on difficult to access motus themselves) in private yachts.

And once you arrive at these luxury hideouts you're faced with: overwater bungalows and infinity pools. The sensory overload is intensified by the fact that the colors look as though you're viewing life through a polarizing filter. Add to that an *actual* circular polarizer and you get...this photo.

This was taken at the Hilton Bora Bora Nui, shortly before we bade farewell to our beloved overwater bungalow and left for Huahine and its slightly less luxurious lizard-and-cockroach-filled pensions.

The basic background color of the body is brown and sometimes brown to red brown. This fish has longitudinal blue striations that runs from the head to the back of the dorsal fin. The head and cheeks are adorned with blue lines. The color of the eyes vary from yellow-gold to red. The anal fin shows blue lines in between with red and also the dorsal fin. Some blues have the black band around the dorsal and anal fin.

Some blues have the striations running across all the body and these are called "Royal Blue." Some of them have these striations running just 2/3 of the body, close to the anal and dorsal fin and therefore, these are called "Semi-Royal Blue".

Discus (Symphysodon spp.) are a genus of three species of cichlid freshwater fishes native to the Amazon River basin. Discus are popular as aquarium fish and their aquaculture in several countries in Asia is a major industry.

Discus belong to the genus Symphysodon, which currently includes three species: The common discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus), the Heckel discus (Symphysodon discus), and a new species which has been named Symphysodon tarzoo. However, a further investigation published in August 2007 suggested that the genus held the three species: S. aequifasciatus (the green discus), S. haraldi (the blue/brown/common discus) and S. discus (the Heckel discus). Both studies suggest three species; the only disagreement is in the scientific names for each.

Like cichlids from the genus Pterophyllum, all Symphysodon species have a laterally compressed body shape. In contrast to Pterophyllum, however, extended finnage is absent giving Symphysodon a more rounded shape. It is this body shape from which their common name, "discus", is derived. The sides of the fish are frequently patterned in shades of green, red, brown, and blue. The height and length of the grown fish are both about 20–25 cm (8–10 in).

Another characteristic of Symphysodon species is their care for the larvae. As for most cichlids, brood care is highly developed with both the parents caring for the young. Additionally, adult discus produce a secretion through their skin, which the larvae live off during their first few days. This behaviour has also been observed for Uaru species. However when bred in captivity the larvae will tend to live off their parents secretion for up to 2 weeks.

My 6ft planted aquarium.
It's a 180x60x60cm tank, holding 650 litres(160 gallons), has a co2 injection system and a single eheim filter. 4x35w and 2x80w, t5 daylight bulbs +12w of LED evening light.
Substrate is coarse dark sand over a home brewed soil-vermiculite-sand mix.
Plants fed daily.
Don't ask me for an exact water chemistry as I don't know, the fish and plants say it's acceptable though. Plant growth is strong and the fish have all spawned at one time or another, the tetras and corydoras most succesfully.
Flora: Amazon swords, anubias nana and coffeefolia, java windelov and straight, cryptocoyne, brown and green, cabomba, spiral val, pink stuff I've forgotten the name of and a monstrous crinum natans(?). Theres a couple of red leaved lillies in there too.
Fauna:30ish lemon tetras (I gave up counting after the 25th appeared) 7 coydoras julii, 6 siamese algae eaters, 3 dwarf blue rainbows and 3 angels.

Hoya HMC vs. Tiffen

Hoya HMC Multicoated UV-0 filter and uncoated Tiffen Skylight 1a, both catching the reflection of a 14W compact flourescent bulb.
Can you guess which filter is which?............

..........OK, I'll tell you!
The uncoated Tiffen is the one on the right; the Hoya HMC is of course, the filter on the left. Big difference, eh!
