    filter design
  • Filter design is the process of designing a filter (in the sense in which the term is used in signal processing, statistics, and applied mathematics), often a linear shift-invariant filter, which satisfies a set of requirements, some of which are contradictory.

    window method
  • In the context of this book, the window method is the primary technique used for constructing and laying picture marquetry. First, the design is drawn out on a waster sheet of veneer, and selected parts of the design, or "windows" are cut away from the waster.

  • Cutting Marquetry using the hole (window) left by removing each piece of the design in turn as a template for the replacement veneer.

Discovering Statistics Using SPSS for Windows: Advanced Techniques for Beginners (Introducing Statistical Methods series)

Andy Field has written an up-to-date student-oriented textbook with the aim of making the learning of advanced statistics and using SPSS as painless as possible.
While other books either concentrate on statistical theory or on the functions of the popular computer program SPSS, Andy Field integrates the two to provide the student with a thorough grounding in statistics through learning to use SPSS. He provides a detailed, but highly accessible, guide to using SPSS for more complex statistical tests. There are illustrations of dialogue boxes throughout, and each chapter concludes with a set of exercises and descriptions. The book includes a CD-ROM with SPSS datasets and the author provides a website for further help and upda

Window Cleaners

Window Cleaners

I don't know if they planned this when they designed The Sage building but cleaning the windows is tricky. So much so, they have devised a new method.

It is similar to bungee jumping except that on the ground there is a large vat of soapy water in which the cleaners 'dip'. On the way back up they splash themselves all over the windows, like human sponges. Someone on the ground then positions a vat of clean water for them to rinse the soap off the building.

They call the new method 'Spongy-jumping' or 'Spongebobbing'.

Windows on Jesus: Methods in Gospel Exegesis

The four New Testament Gospels can be approached from and with very different perspectives. Professor Weren offers a readable and illuminating survey of the Gospels based on years of teaching university students. The first part focuses on "synchronic" approaches, which concentrate on the text itself. Here the literary aspects are in the foreground, including discussions of the limits of a text, structural analysis, narrative analysis, and meaning in context. The second part focuses on "diachronic" approaches, examining the phenomenon that texts in the Gospels go back to early traditions, and including discussions of historical criticism, form and redaction criticism, along with consideration of duplicate and triple texts and the relation between John and the Synoptics. A third part examines relations between Gospel texts and other passages in the Bible, and also considers Jewish exegesis and the apocryphal Gospels. A final part looks again at the question of the historical Jesus. Brief theoretical introductions are followed by examples and illustrations, which are meant to serve as encouragement to personal exploration. Here, then, is an excellent, usable introduction to the study of the Gospels. Wim Weren is Professor of New Testament Exegesis in the Theological Faculty of the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands.
