May Company Auto/Tire Center (former location), Buena Park Downtown (Buena Park Mall) Buena Park, California Buena Park Downtown - Buena Park, California. This section of parking space used to be at one time May Company Tire/Auto Center located behind the May Co. Department Store (now Walmart) at what was then called Buena Park Mall. Like Sears and most former Southern California based Broadway Department Stores this May Company location had an auto/tire center. It was closed and demolished sometime in the late 80's/early 90's. The May Co. at Buena Park Mall closed in the early 90's around the time Robinsons-May came to exist. The store itself became Fedco in 1993 and closed in 1999 when the chain went out of business. The May Co. building would be vacant for a couple of more years until it was torn down. Walmart built a new store on that site which still operates today. Though this location had a garage I don't know if May Company had service garages at other stores or if this location was experimental. Thick Slicks Got new rear tires yet again in only 3 months. Just look at the yellow tires, you can see the seam. Yikes. This pseudo hipster lifestyle is getting costly. I'm not sure if I love these new slicks but apparently it's 3 times more thick than my previous tires which means I get to skid more before I get new ones. Oh, and they're cheaper too. I do miss the yellow on yellow look though. Oh well, thick slicks it is. Vancouver, Canada. June 2010. The Way Large tires can cost close to $10,000, that is why Air Companies change tires after a layer of ply-- approx 9/32 that is under the tread-- is scraped so the tires can be re treaded instead of just buying new ones. Average tires can last about twenty to thirty landings depending on the weight, skill level of the pilot, and the length of the runway. The planes starts moving backwards. scruffy dog headquarters in transition it's been a hell of a week ... with more to come. new computer system ... rebuilding everything ... and i mean everything. this photo is deceiving ... the office is a disaster. i'm glad i dragged the extra table over from j's office after building her a new desk. i now have FOUR keyboard/mouse combos in my office ... my coveted former Logitech combo that has to be put to rest now that i'm running Vista Ultimate 64-bit ... the latest, greatest Logitech MX 5500 Revolution that i've struggled w/ for the past couple of days and have packed back up for return ... its funky scroll wheel simply isn't gellin' with the 64-bit version and i'm tired of fucking with it ... then there's the Logitech 3200 combo which i'm currently on, and a Microsoft desktop combo that i'm hoping might be happier with the 64-bit technology. we'll see. then there's a new (cheap) scanner because, hey, after 7 years, the old one simply doesn't know which end is up any more. and the new kick-serious-ass monitor is on its way ... apparently back-ordered across north america. hell, even the dog is an old model ... threw out a hip or her back on the weekend ... not sure which. she's gimping around and i'm throwing all kinds of homeo's at her, hoping it's just soft-tissue. hey, maybe i'll actually get a chance to take some photos some day ... besides this miserable attempt at an update. oh yeah, and i also bought myself an Eye-One color calibration tool and software ... i have NO idea how to use it ... need to take the plunge. for those of you wondering if i've recently won the lottery or discovered a dead relative ... neither. i actually signed a sweet deal with an ad agency for the licensing of some images. i can't really talk about it much until the "campaign" starts ... but suffice it to say it's paid off our vet debts (although we're still doing the barter thing on a few thousand dollars worth from mirren) and i'm able to upgrade my equipment which is all 4-10 years old. it's been a god-send ... The Mighty Citroen BX-TRI - my first (and now dead) car! Here's a nostalgic photo of the first car I ever bought - a Citroen 1987 BX-TRI. (I bought it in 1994). Being a European car, it had a lot of features as standard in 1987 that non-European cars didn't start sporting till much later. These included remote central locking, electric sunroof, electronic fuel injection, power steering, and power windows. And, of course, the pneumatic suspension system for which Citroen is famous. My friends were always impressed when I started up the car and it slowly, majestically rose from its lowered position to reveal more of the tyres. The suspension made the ride quite comfortable, too. Having said all that, it still gave me more trouble than it was worth in the end - I spent so much money fixing it! Eventually it just wasn't worth keeping any more, though I loved the idea of having a quirky car. I now own a sensible if somewhat boring Holden Astra - but it's a lot cheaper to run! The Citroen's eventual ignominious fate was to be sold to someone who wanted it for parts for his own Citroen. O the shame... Enid Collins "Cable Car" purse Worn out (but cheap!) Enid Collins bag I got at the thrift store yesterday. I have soft spots for cable cars and the color pink, so I HAD to have it.... AutoBianchi A112 ABARTH Once I was the owner of this small and very powerfull car. The year was 1986. The car was ten years old at that moment. I traded a set of alloywheels with tyres for this car . Those days no one had heard of The Fast And The Furious. I took me more than one year to completely rebuild the car. I did the framework, the engine and also build in a five-gear box from a Fiat Panda. At that time I owned the only A112 Abarth with a fifth gear! I enjoyed riding (or more streetracing) the car for more then one year. I even took him on a holiday to his roots in Italy where I got several thumbs up from Italian guys. A Ducati rider took shots of my car while I was taking shots of his Duc.. I didn't speak Italian, nor did he speak English, nevertheless we understood each other. Despite of all the restauration hours it still turned out to be an Italian car... Rust finaly made an end to our friendship. The chassis couldn't take the brute force of the revised and tuned engine. Nevertheless after all those years, I'm still riding Italian cars. They are cheap and ride like hell. 26.365 :: rain and rain and more rain August 15, 2011 On Monday, it rained. A lot. Cats and dogs and hamsters, falling from the sky diagonally. We wouldn't be deterred, though, and had wraps from the tasty wrap place, and then piled into the car to hit up some of my parents' favorite Cape Cod stores, like Yankee Doodle, known for its unpainted wooden items, and Cuffy's, the home of the legendary Cape Cod sweatshirts that we've been wearing since ... forever. Naturally, I didn't bring a raincoat (and was glad I didn't, because mine is the exact same color as both my dad's AND my mom's and HONESTLY who does that?) so I spent the day getting soaked as we ran from the car into and out of stores. It was ... kind of a bummer. But we did some fun things, and then had a cozy pasta dinner while watching more Red Sox baseball, so it ended up being a good day, despite the weather. Car Fire We were woken up by a loud "bang" at 01:15 on Saturday morning and I looked out of the window to see our new neighbour's car on fire! (They only moved in two weeks ago) At this point the flames were much smaller than in the photo and were only coming out of the bonnet. I grabbed my camera after making a couple of necessary phonecalls and ducked behind my mate Andi's car. (It was Andi's first visit to our house too!). As the tyres burst with loud pops, and the flames crept towards the petrol tank I was beckoned back inside by my wife, Jen! After initally suspecting the worst and making sure all the house windows were open ajar, it turned out that it was caused by an electrical fault in the dashboard... Since this incident, two more cars have "spontaneously" combusted. We now park our car in the large secure compound protected by armed guards, across the road. Update: Thank fuck we've moved house. A total of eight cars have developed "electrical faults". Including a diesel. And some who's "electrical faults" clearly started in the wheel-arches. The local fire brigade are only part-timers though... news flash-- Massey Ferguson holds up small car Wish I had a pic of me taking this shot -- I had to point the camera through a small hole in the fence!!! 365-80 Can't stop yaaaaawwwwww... Ah, Valentine's Day. It's good that my wife and I never really got into this day, or today would have really hurt. Instead, I bought the second-most expensive piece of camera equipment I've ever owned (most expensive--my first DSLR, the 20D, because I bought it new). Then I posted an ad on Craigslist and sold another lens within an hour to a very nice, if very talkative old man. Then I got a haircut. Then I went to the Rec Center and walked on the indoor track for half an hour. Then I went to the computer store to try and sort out my memory mess, but decided that was no help, so I went online to Crucial and bought their "guaranteed to work" memory. We'll see. And then sometime right before dinner, I started yawning and just couldn't stop. This is one of the last ones, taken while giving the kid a bath. So, overall, I'd have to say it was one of the more constructive and successful Valentine's Days that I've ever had. You know, so long as I ignore the the rather large elephant in the room. 1 year ago... same place ... changes are never ending.... My most hated and loved quote..... "There are things that we don't want to happen... but have to accept... things we don't want to know... but have to learn... and people we can't live without... but have to let go. " I am starting to wonder if life is nothing but a bag of dirty little tricks. A game of endurance. Will. Strength. Test after test... Looking back through my online journal I'm really in a too familiar place. Well... I'm tired and pissy and don't much care for being toyed with by whatever forces have hold of my puppet strings. Sick of them switching hands. "Here, your turn... play hard!" These tired ass strings are about to snap... a pair of shears in my pocket would be mighty fine too. How about some easy play? ... oh and a little damn sunshine might be nice. 8 days and counting.... looks like at least 10 more coming.... wtf? Yesterday I took the kids fishing in the rain because I couldnt sit here in this house and look at these walls another day. I took them mudding in my Expedition.... no it's not 4 wheel drive, but I have skills I learned as a teen. haha. I know how to dig and bag tires so it was worth every bit of risk. I have started a bucket list of big risks... because really, life with out them is lame for a thrill seeker like me. I'd give about anything for about 6 non stop roller coaster rides right now... "The Hulk..." damn that sounds mighty fine. Eye's wide open the entire time, hands in the air, smiling the entire time... no screaming. Just a big fat grin.... that's not on my bucket list BTW, I have already done it a bunch.... just wanna do it again... .like right now. Who can be pissed on a coaster ride they love? I'd have to let go of this pissy-ness now wouldn't I? Day 108/365 "MOM!!!!" woke up around 11:30 took the dog out, saw my uncle dave, vacummed (idk i cant spell) then eddie and my dad brought me tim hortons. a bagel and hot chocolate i was so happy. played burnout with eddie then played mario party with nicky, then more burnout. then we had to leave where i found that the dog had eaten some of the inside of my shoe, so my dads gonna get me new ones (which i wanted new ones anyway but now he has to buy them) then went to burger king and went home. then watched tv and fixed nickys paper. then tried to scan my senior pic on the computer finally did it after 45 minutes then did my recital ad that my mom insisted was due tomorrow but guess what its due saturday so i spent 2 hours annoyed for no reason lol then worked out, attempted to call daniela but no answer then watched more tv, took a shower and went online talked to adam and pat and that weird dude NsLarge uhh his so gross. then made the cds for mr e's class now i'm trying to get tired. school tomorrow =[ so pic is me eating a wonka bar and the quote is me yelling at my mom about the deadline lol on a sad not today i found out jennas grandpa died =[ the wake is wednesday 1-5 RIP Mr. Miranda SOTD: "Cupids Chokehold" by Gym Class Heroes (feat. The town of Ladora was dark A long, hot day of driving and shooting had me just about worn out, but instead of relaxing at the motel in Cedar Rapids, I made myself drive down to Ladora. I had never seen the town before and I had to be there after dark - all because of a poem I read in 9th grade literature, about 37 years ago in Dallas. Poem to be read at 3 a.m. Excepting the diner On the outskirts The town of Ladora At 3 a.m. Was dark but For my headlights And up in One second-story room A single light Where someone Was sick or Perhaps reading As I drove past At seventy Not thinking. This poem Is for whoever Had the light on. Donald Justice All these years later, I found no lit diner on the outskirts. It was not 3 am, and none of my shots of lighted second story windows pleased me. But on the east edge of town, an ancient neon sign casting it's red glow on an old roadside garage, and a lone car heading in, its headlights shimmering on the pavement of US 6 - this turned out to be the scene I came to shoot. My parents were so closely tied to their families and their hometown in southeast Iowa, that for all the nine years we lived in St. Louis, we made the journey back nearly every weekend. Those childhood trips, often made late at night, filled me with the love of the road. I grew up knowing the joy of traveling in a little arc of light that we pushed down the dark highway ahead. The peaceful whine of tires on pavement was sweet nightime music. Deserted streets of little sleeping towns fascinated me - everything closed and silent. Looking through plate glass windows down the dimly lit aisles of an empty grocery store, staring up at an illuminated church steeple, watching the glowing face of a clock in the courthouse tower or the backlit brightness of a pop machine at a tiny gas station - I soaked it all in and remembered it. Yet it was the lonely lighted rooms that interested me the most. A solitary bulb hanging from the ceiling in a little apartment over a business on the square. A lamp behind lace curtains in a room beyond a dark front porch. I felt such a strange, strong kinship with those people who were also up in the night. Even then, I was making up stories to go with those lights, imagining other lives that we passed by so quickly. What was it like to live in those rooms . . . and did those people ever look down on the street and see our headlights and wonder about our journey, too? I remember the exact moment when I first read this poem. I remember going home and looking through the listings of towns in every state in the back of our Rand McNally road atlas. The only Ladora I found was in Iowa. IOWA !!. Later, I discovered that Donald Justice taught at the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop for many years, so it was indeed Ladora, Iowa that he wrote about - just down the road from Iowa City on US 6. I knew that I'd drive down the dark highway through Ladora some night. It has taken me awhile, but now I have done it. So this shot is for Donald Justice, and that moment when a poet's words lit up an old longing inside me and assured me that I am not alone in what I feel and what I know to be true . . . that my lost and lonely thoughts and my frail, tiny light on this long, dark road will certainly go up and out and somehow connect with all those little lights I pass along the way. And to all you kindred spirits up late into the night, wherever you may be, know this: you are not alone, my light is also on. August 27, 2008 I woke up this morning and packed up the car, saying my goodbyes to everyone before stopping downtown to pick up my bike from the repair shop. I was just trying the door when the owner pulled up in his truck. He eventually introduced himself as Benji and we talked a good five minutes before he said a few things that basically hinted what he was thinking. "Who are you, and what are you doing in my store?" I don't generally assume much about myself, so it was jarring to realize that I failed to mention I was there to pick up my bike and had somehow expected him to remember me from two days ago. Benji retrieved the bike only to learn that no one had worked on it, so I walked around downtown for a few minutes snapping pictures in order to give him time to change a flat tire. I returned and we letft the broken shifters as-is so I could get on my way. I made short work of the drive to Dallas, stopping at a Jack in the Box for lunch. My dining options are slowly narrowing, I've noticed: McDonald's, Sonic and Dairy Queen. Maybe it's a testament to the lean image of the Texan Cowboy, cooking hearty chili on the open range for lack of better options. I had planned on staying the night in Odessa, but failed to remember my ordeals in this stretch of the country. West Texas is not the kind of place you want to be when you're expecting a decent hotel. The twin cities of Midland and Odessa lack any sort of coherent advertising for roadside services, possibly because the roadside is littered with run down factories and belching refineries. There is tons of work to be had here, as the hotels in the next town were full, their parking lots brimming with the sorts of trucks that belong to contractors and pipe fitters. I ended up having to drive to Pecos, where, my judgment compromised by my desire to sleep and my aversion to Dairy Queen, I settled on a less than stellar hotel, where hopefully I will sleep. It's cold in here, so cold that I would have kept the heater on, had I not set off the fire alarm the first time I tried it.
