Day 7- DRAING BACK UP - IMG 1300 I poked my head into the kitchen to take some measurements for our new closet when I was greeted by this sight. You see, the drain (pipe with the gaping black hole) is shared with our next door neighbor. They did their kitchen last year and we discovered that when they use their garbage disposal, it backed up into our sink. We had a check valve installed, which is a simple flap that makes your pipes 1-way only. A check valve is not something to be trifled with, in so much that it is put in place for a reason. Unfortunately, the guys doing my kitchen demolition didn't hesitate to remove the check valve when taking away the sink. So, some time in the last 48 hours, my neighbor ran their garbage disposal and SPLAT the water came right in through the pipe, soaked the paper that is in place to protect the new tile, and then sat there for however long. The tile had just been grouted on Friday, but is yet to be sealed. The water, yellowish in color, may have stained the grout. There appears to be some cracking in the grout as well. Tomorrow is a big day for plumbing, so this should be resolved soon. Daddy is grumpy. 224-4-13-11 In this shot you can see the bronze/stainless deck drain, and it's thru hull just to the right below it (the connecting hose is not yet installed). There is a ball style check valve in the drain to allow water to only pass 1 direction. All other self-bailing decks on BTs that I've seen have scupper holes through the hull at the level of the deck. I decided to do it differently and drain down through the deck. The thru hull exits a few inches above the water line. I have 1 of these installed on each side. It's in the down position with a train traveling left to right heading into West Seattle.
