Day 2/365: Finished!
Friday, Jan. 2
I dropped off the finished cake at the reception site this morning. Since it was winter wedding, I used some white lights under organza fabric to create festive "wintery" look. Not too shabby :)
Then I went home and vegged out. Making cakes is a bit stressful (even though I really enjoy it) and I never feel fully relaxed until I safely drive the cake to the destination and get rid of it. I slept well last night, not worrying that something might happen the cake before the wedding :)
Kristy's Wedding Cake
This is my second official wedding order. The cakes are Banana Mud on the bottom with a Chocolate Raspberry Mud on top. I loved doing the piping although it did get alittle tricky on the sides ( I'm still yet to purchase a tilting turn table).
When the bride came to see she loved it! It's so nice seeing their expressions when they look at their wedding cake, shame its not always like this!

Autunmnal Patio Decor
If you notice the yellow mums on the right, you'll see the "interesting planter" I bought at a yard sale. My sister, the artsy fartsy, (cuz I have no art talent, boo hoo), filled it and arranged it. I like how it came out but I'll have to go out later and retake this as the chair and the whiteness of the blinds are distracting to me.
Those stick thingys came from a bag of plastic flowers I got at the same yard sale for $3. Loads of stuff were still in it's original wrappers and I figured if I had paid full price, it'd be about $75 worth of goodies. Now where to store it in this apartment?

Painted brick walls in Main Studio have damaged paint where they've been knocked over time. Nothing very bad but when trying to chip back to sound paintwork ended up removing quite a bit. Better to do a proper job of it that skimping and ending up 'bodging' it though.

Day 108 - let me see you stripped down to the bone
I can't start decorating the house for Christmas until the home improvement crap is put away, so I'm trying to get the pending projects completed. Painting that wall so it's not two shades of purple is on the list. Stripping the paint off the cabinet doors, since they're already off the hinges and taking up space in the kitchen, was today's order of business.
It wasn't until the layer of yellow latex came off that the gummy stain became apparent. At the top of the picture you see one unstripped door's stain and another door's paint. The lighting didn't bring out the yellow accurately, but it is very much yellow.
And now I'm getting a headache. It's raining buckets outside right now... it wasn't when the project was started!

Trifle
Fresh Fruit Trifle
Recipe By :Johanna Burkhard
Serving Size : 12
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 cup orange juice -- fresh squeezed is best
2 egg yolks
4 ounces light cream chesse -- cubed and softened
2 teaspoons grated orange peel
1/4 cup orange-flavoured liqueur OR orange juice
1 cup whipping cream
1 cup raspberry sauce or jam OR strawberry sauce
or jam
1 298 grams store-bought frozen pound cake -- cut into 3/4
inch cubes
6 cups prepared fresh fruits
3 tablespoons toasted sliced almonds -- (optional)
In a small saucepan, whisk together sugar, cornstarch and orange juice
until smooth; beat in egg yolks. Cook over medium heat, whisking
constantly, for 3 minutes until mixture comes to a full boil and
thickens. Remove from heat. Beat in cream cheese, orange rind and
orange flavoured liqueur until smooth.
Transfer custard to a bowl and cool. (Can be made 1 day ahead, covered
and refrigerated). In a bowl, using an electric mixer, whip cream until
stiff peaks form. Fold into orange custard just before using.
Arrange half the cake cubes in bottom of a 10-cup trifle or
straight-sided glass serving bowl. Drizzle with half the raspberry
sauce. Add half the fruit, pressing an occasional piece of fruit flat
against the sides of the bowl. Spoon half the orange custard cream over
the fruit.
Layer with remaining cake cubes, patting down lightly. Spoon remaining
raspberry sauce over and top with fruit mixture. Spread with rest of
orange custard cream.
Cover and chill for at least 4 hours or up to 1 day ahead. Just before
serving, sprinkle with toasted almonds and garnish with raspberries and
mint, if desired.

Serving Ideas : For a decorative top, spoon 2 tablespoons of the
raspberry sauce into a small plastic sandwich bag. Press misture into
one corner of the bag. Poke a small hole in tip of bag using a skewer
and pipe mixture into a thin stream over top in a zigzag or lattice
pattern.
NOTES : The recipe includes a recipe for the raspberry sauce....I
usually just use flavoured jam or fruit-flavoured ice-cream topping.
Try any combination of fruits -- berries, grapes, kiwi, orange sections,
apple or pear sections, pineapple...cut into bite-size pieces.
Toss fruits that discolour in 1 tablespoon lemon juice; drain before
using.
When making, don't let this boil long or the eggs may/will curdle. If
they do, just strain before adding the cream cheese, orange rind and
liqueur.

The Table Is Set
Very simple table setting for Thanksgiving as all of my candlesticks and decorative stuff is in storage from the flooring being replaced and I had no time to make or buy a centerpiece.
I was going to use a beautiful fall tablecloth until I realized that the only china I had would clash horribly with it, so I just went with blue.

Day 214: Birthdays
Here is a nice photo taken in the evening, just before mid-night, on Ally's birthday.
You may or may not be able to see, but there are actually 23 mini choc-chip muffins to mark my bestfriend's 23rd birthday. And you may or may not be able to see, it spells out "Happy 23rd Birthday [heart] Ally [heart]" Took me a while to work out the letters and how many. And my sister M helped me bake the muffins [because we all know I can't bake to save my life] I guess I decorated them [stick to the stuff I know!]
Ally's birthday was on the Friday. She shares the same birthday as lots of people, like David Beckham, Jennetic and Mel Duck. But she get's extra VIP treatment from me because she's my bestfriend.
We travelled down to Cornwall, checked out our crib [which was lush!] Had a mini-picnic on the beach [whilst watching surfers], caught up on last week's The Apprentice, then got [overly] dressed up for some Award Winning meals in St Ives. Only Ally couldn't drink a glass of wine with me because she was the designated driver! So after that lush seafood meal, back home, off to the local pub. After a pint, back home whereby I somehow managed to set all the muffins up [despite Ally curiously wondering what I was up to], but somehow she managed to see the mini-cakes, but before I had the chocolate icing and candles done up, only I asked her politely to "Please leave me alone. Thank you." Which she did, reluctantly.
For the rest of this month of May, I have decided to take this opportunity to do the
30 SECRETS IN 30 DAYS challenge! I will tell you my secrets. Day-by-day :) Ok, some may seem like facts, but they're still things not many people know about, thus qualifying them to BE secrets. Heh.
Second Secret: I put so much effort into making someone feel happy on their birthday, kinda because it's simply their special day kind of thing. It's important that they are treated like a princess/prince/king/queen. It's "their" day. And to me, that's very important. Well obviously those who are important in my life get this VIP treatment [or I try to give it anyway...] Nobody likes to have a depressing birthday. I know I get depressed easily on my birthday when nobody thinks it's a special day for me. It hurts when people say "Oh birthday's are like any other day...! I wanted to show you all some of our Christmas decorations - just because I like how I've decorated this year! Very self-indulgent I know!
The house has these lovely deep slate-topped windowsills which were asking to be covered in candles and shiny stuff. Plus I quite liked some of the shots I took ;P*
So there'll most likely be a few more tomorrow. :)

Log cabin quilt "straight furrows"
This is a very traditional pattern.
The symbolism of the Log Cabin square is the red centre square represents the hearth, with half the block in the light and half in the shadows. When the blocks are put together in this diagonal way it represents a plowed field.
In the years up to the US civil war, a log cabin quilt hanging on the line outside indicated that this was a safe house for slaves escaping from the south who were heading up to Canada.
I made this about 15 years ago after collecting lots of beige, brown and green fabrics. It's all 2 inch strips, just sew on a strip, square up the edges, sew on the next one...
Log Cabin Quilt is done (piecing, at least!)
At 8:05 p.m. tonight, April 1, (No foolin'!) I finished the queen-sized Log Cabin Quilt. It is such a relief to have this done. I started it in September 08 and I am donating it to a local childrens home for their raffle. It will be quilted soon, bound and then off to Kemmerer Village. It has 72 log blocks and 9 cabin blocks and is done in civil war reproduction fabrics.

A medieval fabric. This novelty fabric is a blaze of color and motion! There are lion kings, baron bears, chess pieces, shields, banners, and more!
The colors on this are bright and bold. The background is a unique plum grey tone.
The pattern parts are fairly large, but close together, making it easy to work with. This is out of print.

This plastic bag holder is made from a cute rooster and chicken print by Debbie Mumm. The flap is a wavy striped print. Sage green "rick rack" is sewn on the outside flap. There are three yellow buttons attached with sage green embroidery floss.
This is a stylish plastic bag holder. You simply lift the top flap and put your bags inside. A piece of elastic gathers the bottom to help hold in the bags. You pull the bags out through the bottom. There is a tab at the top so you can hang it in your kitchen or wherever you would like to have a plastic bag stash. This bag holder is approximately 14" long and has about an 18" diameter.
The matching pot holders measure about 7 1/2" X 7 1/2". The hang tab in the corner has a yellow button that is attached with sage green embroidery floss.
