SIP-1 Gallon SIP These pot inserts (also designed and manufactured in Germany) are great for annual planters. I have 5, 1 quart and 5, 1 gallon pot inserts. But I will not use them again for growing tomatoes. I have the gallon inserts inserted inside a 5 gallon pail, (20 litres). As the tomatoes plants have grown they demand more water than these pot inserts can hold and the tomatoes planted in these containers tend to suffer from water stress more than the others. The water shaft needs to be re-designed so it can be extended. As it is you are constantly looking for the water shaft when watering a tall plant. Source: Wikipedia Looking down upon front garden from mid-level entry landing The front garden is set within a perfect half circle sort of amphitheater slope, with the hillside plantings corresponding to the seating. The slope was further planted with large shade tolerant screening plants such as Mexican Weeping Bamboo and Senecio cristobalensis, to provide more privacy from the street above. The slope already had mature plantings of Pinus canariensis and Phoenix canariensis which provide dappled to deep shade year round. We added more palms such as Chamaedorea plumosa and Phoenix roebellenii to further the subtropical theme. Note how the lawn border of the old fashioned plant, Bergenia crassifolia also ties in with the bold foliage look, and is a perfect accent for both foliage and cheerful winter bloom. (14) Bank of Toronto Building - 1949 630 Yates Street and 1306 Broad St, Victoria, BC Statement of Significance Description of Historic Place The Bank of Toronto Building is a two-storey plus basement, stone-clad structure located at the intersection of Broad and Yates Streets in downtown Victoria. The building is distinguished by its simplified, smooth exterior and large corporate emblem above the chamfered corner entrance. Heritage Value Built as the Bank of Toronto's Victoria headquarters, the value of this building is associated with its progressive architecture which was commonly commissioned by banking institutions in the postwar era. Seeking to portray itself as progressive through its architecture but cautious in its approach, this early example of Modernism in Victoria is stripped of all classical references. The simplified detailing is countered by the rich quality of the materials including the stone cladding. The corner entrance is a traditional banking-hall feature, topped by the Bank of Toronto's corporate emblem. The small size of this structure, its chamfered corner and its horizontal proportions all contribute to the low-scale pedestrian ambience of Broad Street. Completed in 1951, the Bank of Toronto Building was one of the last commissions undertaken by architect William F. Gardiner (1884-1951). Vancouver-based Gardiner is remembered for his successful commercial and institutional practice, with a corporate clientele including banks, insurance companies and automobile service station companies. Gardiner consistently provided restrained modernist designs for his corporate clients. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for aluminum sheet metal awnings, canopies, carports, and patios. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. Delos From Wikipedia - The island of Delos (Greek: ?????), isolated in the centre of the roughly circular ring of islands called the Cyclades, near Mykonos, is one of the most important mythological, historical and archaeological sites in Greece. The excavations in the island are among the most extensive in the Mediterranean - ongoing work takes place under the direction of the French School at Athens and many of the artifacts found are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Delos and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Delos had a position as a holy sanctuary for a millennium before Olympian Greek mythology made it the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. From its Sacred Harbour, the horizon shows the two conical mounds (image below) that have identified landscapes sacred to a goddess in other sites: one, retaining its pre-Greek name Mount Kynthos, is crowned with a sanctuary of Dionysus. Established as a cult centre, Delos had an importance that its natural resources could never have offered. In this vein Leto, searching for a birthing-place for Apollo, addressed the island: Delos, if you would be willing to be the abode of my son Phoebus Apollo and make him a rich temple --; for no other will touch you, as you will find: and I think you will never be rich in oxen and sheep, nor bear vintage nor yet produce plants abundantly. But if you have the temple of far-shooting Apollo, all men will bring you hecatombs and gather here, and incessant savour of rich sacrifice will always arise, and you will feed those who dwell in you from the hand of strangers; for truly your own soil is not rich. - Homeric Hymn to Delian Apollo Investigation of ancient stone huts found on the island indicate that it has been inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC. Thucydides identifies the original inhabitants as piratical Carians who were eventually expelled by King Minos of Crete. By the time of the Odyssey the island was already famous as the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. (Although there seems to be some confusion of Artemis' birthplace being either Delos or the island of Ortygia.) Indeed between 900 BC and AD 100, sacred Delos was a major cult centre, where Dionysus is also in evidence as well as the Titaness Leto, mother of the above mentioned twin deities. Eventually acquiring panhellenic religious significance, Delos was initially a religious pilgrimage for the Ionians. A number of "purifications" were executed by the city-state of Athens in an attempt to render the island fit for the proper worship of the gods. The first took place in the 6th century BC, directed by the tyrant Pisistratus who ordered that all graves within sight of the temple be dug up and the bodies moved to another nearby island. In the 5th century, during the 6th year of the Peloponnesian war and under instruction from the Delphic Oracle, the entire island was purged of all dead bodies. It was then ordered that no one should be allowed to either die or give birth on the island due to its sacred importance and to preserve its neutrality in commerce, since no one could then claim ownership through inheritance. Immediately after this purification, the first quinquennial festival of the Delian games were celebrated there. After the Persian wars the island became the natural meeting-ground for the Delian League, founded in 478 BC, the congresses being held in the temple (a separate quarter was reserved for foreigners and the sanctuaries of foreign deities.) The League's common treasury was kept here as well until 454 BC when Pericles removed it to Athens. Since 1872 the Ecole Francaise d'Athenes ("French School of Athens") has been excavating the island, the complex of buildings of which compares with those of Delphi and Olympia. The island had no productive capacity for food, fiber, or timber, with such being imported. Limited water was exploited with an extensive cistern and aqueduct system, wells, and sanitary drains. Various regions operated agoras (markets). The largest slave market in the larger region was also maintained here. In 1990, UNESCO inscribed Delos on the World Heritage List, citing it as the "exceptionally extensive and rich" archaeological site which "conveys the image of a great cosmopolitan Mediterranean port". Landmarks The small Sacred Lake in its circular bowl, now intentionally left dry by the island's caretakers to suppress disease spreading bacteria, is a topographical feature that determined the placement of later features. The Minoan Fountain was a rectangular public well hewn in the rock, with a central column; it formalized the sacred spring in its present 6th century BC form, reconstructed in 166 BC, according to an inscription. Tightly-laid courses of masonry form the walls; water can still be reached by a flight of steps that fill one side. There are several market squares. Remote Shooting with Dell XPS Gyroscope remote control Using the Canon EOS Utility for Remote Shooting. A lot of new computer systems that have multimedia capabilities come with remote controls. For wireless remote shooting, I tether my Canon to my Laptop which has a Gyroscope remote control which I then use to control the EOS utility that came with the camera. Here is a picture of me setting up for remote shooting: The camera is behind the Monitor, (yes I know the lens cap is on), The Dell remote can be seen leaning on the CPU. I just use that to point at the shutter button of the EOS Utility software and Viola' wireless remote. With this particular Dell system the keyboard is remote as well (bluetooth) and that is why it is not pictured. IR Test -remote control I thought I'd better test to see if I was getting true infrared using this little trick. This is a very crude shot of my Xbox 360 remote control with one of the buttons pressed (tricky to hold down the button, hold the film over the camera lens and trip the camera shutter, hence the terrible quality). The IR LED is clearly illuminated, something not visible to the naked eye. Source: Wikipedia Looking down upon front garden from mid-level entry landing The front garden is set within a perfect half circle sort of amphitheater slope, with the hillside plantings corresponding to the seating. The slope was further planted with large shade tolerant screening plants such as Mexican Weeping Bamboo and Senecio cristobalensis, to provide more privacy from the street above. The slope already had mature plantings of Pinus canariensis and Phoenix canariensis which provide dappled to deep shade year round. We added more palms such as Chamaedorea plumosa and Phoenix roebellenii to further the subtropical theme. Note how the lawn border of the old fashioned plant, Bergenia crassifolia also ties in with the bold foliage look, and is a perfect accent for both foliage and cheerful winter bloom. But I will not use them again for growing tomatoes. I have the gallon inserts inserted inside a 5 gallon pail, (20 litres). As the tomatoes plants have grown they demand more water than these pot inserts can hold and the tomatoes planted in these containers tend to suffer from water stress more than the others. The water shaft needs to be re-designed so it can be extended. As it is you are constantly looking for the water shaft when watering a tall plant. (16) 20/07 2007 Hog's Back On the way to Guildford in the works van. Not the best day as I had hoped to get some pictures for the 20 07 2007 project. Instead I spent a frustrating morning trying to get machines onto a van while standing in three inches of water. Didn't help that the van that had been hired had a faulty tail lift and the heght from the van floor to the bottom of the roller shutter was slightly less than the height of the 300 kilogram machine. The fact that we were being drenched by the overflow from faulty gutering didn't help. So I called time on that exercise before we had an amusing slip/crash/pinned under a machine incident and sent Gary away to get a proper vehicle from the hire company. Headed toward Guildford, reasoning that I woud be best on the main roads rather than the shorter country route. Slight mistake as will be seen in phots below.
