American Apparel is a Joke

You may not have heard of Dov Charney, but his empire is taking over the world. American Apparel, the company he founded in 1997, now employs more than 6,700 people, and has 187 stores in 15 countries (nine of them in Britain). Ethical shoppers like it because it claims not to outsource manufacturing; everything is made, its website boasts, "in downtown Los Angeles". Charney's employees get more than the minimum wage, healthcare and subsidised lunches.

But all is not squeaky clean in the world of Charney. He has just been sued by an employee called Jeneleen Floyd who alleges that, in the course of a telling-off, he ordered her to pretend to masturbate in front of him. When she didn't, he turned to her line manager and asked him to do it instead; then, in the very proper words of the lawsuit, filed last week, "as Mr Swenson complied with Defendant Charney's instruction, Defendant Charney moved next to him and simulated an oral sex act with him".

Commentators in the US don't seem surprised, though. He has been sued before, by women who alleged that he created a "wholly intolerable" work atmosphere in which women were hired simply because they were "hot". One said she was called into his office and offered a vibrator, because "it's great during sex". One of these cases was dismissed; the other two combined and settled. Charney himself has always denied sexual harassment.

He has been known to walk through his office in underwear, and conduct meetings in a thong (his defence - he designs underwear, so why not model it?); during the interview process for an article by Claudine Ko, for the now-defunct Jane magazine, he had oral sex with a female employee in front of Ko; he also masturbated several times.

He once explained that one of the advantages of the downtown LA location of his offices was the neighbourhood strip bar: "Big companies tend to hire fitting models at a hundred bucks an hour. But they only give you one look. At a strip bar, you get a cross-section of chicks. You've got big chicks, little chicks, big-assed chicks, little-assed chicks, chicks with big tits, and chicks with little tits. You couldn't ask for a better place to fit a shirt." Then there are his ad campaigns, of seeming pre-pubescents in provocative poses, often taken by Charney himself. "Gee," wrote one member of the public, in big black letters across a New York billboard showing a woman bent over double, wearing only tights. "I wonder why women get raped?"

Last month Charney was named retailer of the year, an honour previously awarded to Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Oscar de la Renta. One wonders if his employees would agree.

Belikin Lighthouse Lager

This 4.2% abv pale lager is the thinnest beer I've tasted since a visit to Kenya in 2007. There was absolutely no aroma or flavor to it and the mouthfeel was like water, except for a mild carbonation. I assume this beer must be fairly close to what Bud Lite tastes like, but I don't intend to find out!

A book for brave artists who embark on the treacherous and most wonderful adventure of selling artful creations in art festivals and generally directly to the public. What you will need, how to choose shows, sales at the booth, marketing and promotion, setting goals for continued success, display tips, tricks of the trade, staying healthy and much more.

I have faithfully tried to guide the new artist onto the world of art festivals. This book is not a step-by-step guide, a self-proclaimed “bible”, nor is it certainly the last word on how to approach this nutsy business.

The book contains my experience and that of other artists, close observations of the business, and principles and suggestions that have guided me and many others through the treacherous waters ahead. This is not to say that I have weathered every storm or sailed every sea, or that I have ultimate and complete knowledge of all aspects of the business.
this book is a loosely organized and flexible guideline of how to successfully (key word) launch a career as an art festival artist. Although everyone will do different art, the basics covered in the coming chapters should be a good solid blueprint on how to go about taking the first step. Once you learn the basics and get a couple of festivals under your belt, you will be able to come up with your own strategies and follow your own lead. I should also say that I don’t do everything that I talk about, but I have seen other successful artists who do. I still learn something new every festival, and hopefully I also teach someone new a few tricks of the trade.

You will note from time to time that there is an artist-bias to the book (that’s as opposed to crafter, much more on that later). Right you are. I am an artist and I consider everyone I have ever met in art festival artists. I think many so-called craftspeople of all kinds are artists (although some are not) and so I will call everyone “artist,” just to be all inclusive and efficient. We will get to the matter of diversity of art shows and diversity of art and craft, but for now know that when I say artists and art I also mean craftspeople and craft. My own woodcut printmaking is a hybrid of the two as I design, carve, and print from blocks of wood, and I consider the artist/crafter division a bit silly. My own experience is neither with very high end nor very low end products but somewhere in the middle. I have talked to hundreds of artists and craftspeople and the guidelines in this book can loosely apply to all, as they were learned by observing and listening to all.

This book is not a step-by-step exact procedural methodology. It is merely a guide, a helping hand that will guide you through an art festival, before, during and after. There are a thousands variations of any one of the guidelines I offer and I will try to point those out as I go along. Take some of them to heart, discard what doesn’t suit you and, most of all, learn by doing on your own— and by observing. I am certainly not claiming this is the only, let alone the right way to do things. As I have learned through the years, there are many ways to approach the business of selling art in art festivals.

When the idea for this shirt came to us from one of our fans in Law Enforcement, I immediately thought of the Saint Michael pendant I carried with me every day of my military career. My grandmother gave it to me right before I went to Airborne School and I carried it with me until the day I hung up the uniform. Shortly thereafter, I asked the rest of the guys on Team Ranger Up if I was alone in doing this, and found out that every single one of us carried Saint Michael with us.

We knew this had to be a shirt and we poured our hearts and souls into this one. Here's hoping Saint Michael looks over you as well as he did us.

UT - Antelope Island - U.S. Army Ranger and Air Force Memorial

I lived in Utah most of the first 34 years of my life. During that time I never visited Antelope Island. I heard it was dry, desolate, covered with swarms of bugs, and boring.

I visited the island for the first time in 2000, during a trip after my separation and when I needed to "escape" North Carolina for a few days.

I wanted some solitude. I decided I would find it at a "dry, desolate, bug infested, and boring" place. I fell in love with the island. I have visited Antelope Island five more times since 2000.

On those visits I'd seen the marker for this memorial but I had never stopped. The memorial is at the end of the causeway just as you drive onto the island. I didn’t know why, but when I saw the sign on this visit I had to pull over.

I was not familiar with the history of the memorial. I started reading the plaques at one end and worked my way to the other end of the memorial reading each side of the markers.

It was built to honor five US Army Rangers and seven Air Force officers who died after crashing into the Great Salt Lake on the evening of October 29, 1992. They were doing test maneuvers over the lake and caught up in a bad storm. There was one survivor. The rescue operation itself was heroic due to the weather conditions.

As I read the different markers and looked at the names of the men who died, I thought, "This is interesting."

I was on the island side when I reached the last and largest marker. When I walked around the other side of the marker, I saw the bottom photo - the pictures of the men who died.

Suddenly, this memorial became very personal. I started to cry. A few visitors were driving on & off the island, but I had the memorial to myself.

Given my interest in history, I can't say how many memorials I have visited, but I'm sure it exceeds 100. There comes a point when one memorial seems to run into another memorial.

There aren't that many places or memorials where I have cried. Appomattox, Antietam, The Vietnam Memorial and the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC, and the Sixth Floor Museum (at the Texas Book Depository in Dallas) were the only memorials where I previously cried.

On July 15, 2009, this U.S. Army Ranger and Air Force Memorial was added to that list.

I went to Antelope Island to buy a t-shirt. I left the island with a t-shirt, some photos, and a deeper appreciation for the service people of all eras who have given their lives so I can be free.

Carl recommends Bad Luck and Trouble by Lee Child

My recommendation this month involves a "guilty pleasure." Admittedly, these books are not going to be appearing in the "Mostly Literary" book discussion group, but I love them anyway.

A few years ago, I spotted a pocket-book called Persuader by Lee Child on a table in a bookstore. For some reason, it caught my eye so I picked it up, read the back cover and decided to buy it. It resided on my "to read" shelf for a couple of years. Then probably about a year ago I decided to read it. WOW what an adventure!

Since that time I have "devoured" all the Jack Reacher novels by Lee Child. Renee at the Book shop has been very helpful finding mostly used copies of the entire series for me.

On March 25th the latest title, Bad Luck and Trouble, was released in paperback. Renee called me, I picked it up that afternoon and in two days it was done! She tried to convince me to savor it, after all I had been waiting a year for it to be released in paperback, but I couldn't do it. Once I start a Jack Reacher novel, I can't resist burning through the pages until it is done.

Jack Reacher is 6'5" tall and weighs about 240 pounds, his hands are like two hams hanging at the end of a pair of two by fours. He was an MP in the army which means he had to be tougher than the Rangers, the Green Berets and all the other special forces soldiers. Now he is retired and he lives off the grid, no ID, no driver's license, no address, no phone. He periodically buys new clothes and throws the old ones away. The only possession he has is a folding toothbrush he carries in his shirt pocket. In most of the stories he wanders into a new town and somehow gets involved in some big conspiracy of very bad people and by the end of the book they usually don't exist anymore. Then he usually just walks out of town. There are lots of guns, and explosions, and violence as I said a guilty pleasure. There is just something about Jack Reacher that I can't resist. He is intelligent, and has his own very strong sense of ethics. He has a very heightened second sense about combat, and seemingly no fear.

The Library has most if not all of Lee Childs novels in print and audio version and The Book Shop is always willing to help one find used copies. Often they are available at FRIENDS Booksales as well!

Eco-Friendly Little Pouch for runners, kids and other people made from recycled T-shirt scraps

This is my new little runner's pouch made from recycled t-shirt scraps. It is just the right size to hold a metro card, a drivers license or a credit/debit card as well as a little cash, a key and maybe a lip gloss.

I took this picture using my little point and click Olympus FE-170 with no flash and set on macro setting. For the background, I put a pillowcase over an 18 x 24 picture frame and set the whole thing against a wall. For lighting, I was in my studio that has good ole fluorescent overhead lighting and supplemented it with an Ott Lite.

instead of charging the camera battery, i thought it better to hurry and see what i could get. i think this is ok. the photoshopping i did was just increasing the exposure and contrast and turning it into black and white with a green filter. i was trying some things with the fiber filters but i have some more trial and error to do with that. i could have spent more time on the exposure but, i don't know, didn't have it in me i guess.

Green: how I hated this colour when I was a child... I really hated green and never could explain why (is there any explanation for hating some colour?) I wasn’t a fan of pink either, if you want to know… I liked red and black and blue… nobody knew my personal hatred… now imagine my face (brown hair and freckles all over) when I arrived home after a long school day and my bedroom was GREEN… my parents decided to paint my room GREEN?!… aaaaaargh! I lied by saying that I liked it… my own space had the colour I hated most… well, I got used to it… And the first time I realised that I was starting to like green was when my parents wanted to paint everything in white… “what? No, way! I want my room in green (already a teenager!) The rest of the house may be white but not MY bedroom!” so, it was repainted in green… (I wasn’t a big fan of white either…) my room was green BUT I would NEVER wear that colour… I liked green T-shirts, trousers, skirts, scarves on my friends but never bought them for me (“I don’t look good in it”) until one day, and don’t know how it happened, I arrived home and realized that the new bought jacket was “you know what colour I’m talking about” and it wasn’t THAT bad… :) Nowadays, I have plenty of stuff in green and it’s one of my favourite colours besides orange, yellow, violet… and any colour and rainbow !? :) Moral: “Never say never”… and “Water dropping day by day wears the hardest rock away.”

Tambem nao era fa do cor-de-rosa, se quiserem saber... gostava de vermelho e preto e azul... ninguem sabia do meu odio pessoal... agora imaginem a minha cara (cabelo castanho e sardas por todo o lado) quando cheguei a casa depois de um longo dia de escola e o meu quarto era VERDE... os meus pais decidiram pintar o meu quarto de VERDE?!... aaaaaaahhh! Menti ao dizer que gostava... o meu proprio espaco tinha a cor que mais detestava… bem, habituei-me… e a primeira vez que me apercebi que estava a comecar a gostar do verde foi quando os meus pais decidiram pintar tudo de branco... “o que? Nem pensar! Eu quero o meu quarto verde (ja adolescente!) o resto da casa pode ser branco mas nao o MEU quarto!” assim foi pintado de novo em verde... (tambem nao erauma grande fa do branco...) o meu quarto era verde MAS eu NUNCA usaria aquela cor... I gostava de T-shirts, calcas, saias, cachecois verdes nos meus amigos mas nunca comprava para mim (“Fica-me mal”) ate ao dia, e nao sei como aconteceu, cheguei a casa e apercebi-me que o novo casaco que comprei era “voces sabem de que cor estou a falar” e nao era assim TAO mau... :) hoje em dia tenho muitas coisas em verde e e uma das minhas cores preferidas alem do laranja, amarelo, violeta... e qualquer cor e arco-iris!? :) Moral: “nunca digas nunca” e “agua mole em pedra dura tanto bate ate que fura”.

disaster plush

i'm not really good at any details with sewing, and that can mean just adding ears and a tail.
i had an idea for a dog plush called bud tugly (taken from a name i found of an actual dog), so he had to be kind of a goofy looking dog. i also saw this strange looking dog on petfinder who had an over bite so i kind of combined the ideas.

i wanted to make a plush with screen printing and recycled t-shirts. so the front is printed on an old t-shirt, the ears and tail are made of other t-shirts as well. his tail is actually on the left, not that string behind him on the right.

he is also supposed to be wearing tube socks but i am not sure they came out looking that way.

it was just really hard for me to sew this guy straight! the first version had the ears sewn on the inside! and i won't be printing on a t-shirt that has a ribbed fabric to it, otherwise i get these cracking lines in him.

Pink Tuxedo

This is what I wore today for work. I like to have fun with holidays and with clothing. Some folks don't get it, but I don't care.

I looked for this men's tuxedo shirt in my size for a looooong time! It took me well over a year to find one with a 15" collar. I swear that it seemed like for the longest time the only guys that were bold enough to wear pink ruffle tuxedo shirts were really big guys or all the slimmer guys kept theirs because they loved them so much! lol!

I still had to remove the sleeves and take in the shoulders by about an inch on each side, reattach the sleeves and then put darts in the back to make it a little more form fitting. I'm pretty happy with the results! :)
