(14) 1921 AEC S-Type Bus (1) AEC was a United Kingdom based vehicle manufacturer which built buses, motorcoaches and lorries from 1912 until 1979. The acronym stood for the Associated Equipment Company, but this name was hardly ever used; instead it traded under the AEC and ACLO brands. The London General Omnibus Company or LGOC, was the principal bus operator in London between 1855 and 1933. It was also, for a short period between 1909 and 1912, a motor bus manufacturer. The London General Omnibus Company was founded in 1855 to amalgamate and regulate the many independent horse-drawn omnibus services then operating in London. Originally an Anglo-French enterprise, also known as the Compagnie Generale des Omnibus de Londres, the LGOC soon became the largest omnibus operator in London. It bought out hundreds of independently-owned buses and established a consistent level of service for its fleet. Within a year, the LGOC controlled 600 of London's 810 omnibuses. LGOC began using motor omnibuses in 1902, and the last LGOC horse-drawn bus ran on 25 October 1911. In 1908 the LGOC bought the Road Car Company, the Vanguard Company, and its other main rivals, thereby gaining a virtual monopoly in London. In 1912, the Underground Group, which owned most of the London Underground, bought the LGOC. In 1933, the LGOC, along with the rest of the Underground Group, became part of the new London Passenger Transport Board. The name London General fell into disuse, and London Transport instead became synonymous with the red London bus. In the privatisation of London bus services in the 1980s, London Transport created a series of shadow bus operating companies with names of geographic or historic significance, and one of these was christened London General in honour of the LGOC. The new London General was initially privatised by management buy-out, and acquired by the Go-Ahead Group in 1996. Kleeneze (Bristol) Kleeneze, the company that revolutionised door-to-door selling in Bristol. The multi-million pound Kleeneze Company is now an international concern but it wasn't always that way. It began in 1923 as a small work bench below the stairs in a Whitehall factory. The company was the brainchild of Dr Harry Crook who was to become a Bristol Alderman, Sheriff and finally Lord Mayor He died in 1970. Dr Crook spent some time in America as senior executive of the Full Brush Company . On his return from America in 1920 he - canvassed door-to-door to test the market in Bristol. This convinced him of the possibilities of selling a revolutionary type of brush- twisted-in-wire- and of the direct method of marketing and selling, for which the company is perhaps most well known. He hired space in a Whitehall factory and bought his first equipment - two vices for twisting the brush, a pair of pliers and scissors for trimming. He sold door-to-door and within a few months was bringing in enough to hire his first salesman. Sales at the end of the first year were - worth nearly ?4,000. Door-to-door selling remained at the heart of the business, which grew to be one of the world's biggest brush-makers. Kleeneze moved to a new factory at Hanham in 1928. The company then employed 1,500 salesmen and it was estimated that every housewife in the country received four personal visits each year. The brushes for the domestic market alone used nearly 300 tons of fibres, bristles and wax, 865 trees, 150 tons of fine-gauge steel wire and 15 tons of horsehair. (14) Oregon amateur wine contest Amateur Wine Contest Prevails It should not be this complicated, but a quirky reading of an old law put a crimp in Oregon’s amateur wine contests this year. The state fair and a string of county fairs nixed their nod to amateur-made alcohol beverages because as it stands now, home vintners and brewers lose their exemption to produce without a license if the product leaves their home. New wording for Statute 471.403 should be enacted starting in the January 2011 legislative session, making it once again OK to get a judge at a contest to taste homemade alcohol, evaluate the quality and reward the best. Trudy Kramer is disappointed with the new reading of the law. She made her first wine in 1970 with her husband Keith. Instantly, they won Best of Show awards at the Columbia County Fair and the Oregon State Fair. Encouraged, they opened Kramer Vineyards in Gaston. Her route is well traveled. Jim Sanders went from serving his homemade Pinot Noir to Le Cadeau Vineyard owner Tom Mortimer in 2004 to getting a job as his winemaker. Sanders’ 2006 Le Cadeau Equinoxe earned a 93-point score from Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate. Sanders and Mortimer have since launched new brand Aubichon Cellars. Do-Vino-Yourselfers are also cheered on by Howard Mozeico of Et Fille Wines, another one-time home winemaker now succeeding at the commercial level. Wine Spectator gave Mozeico 92 points for his 2008 Kalita Vineyard Pinot Noir and 90 points for his 2008 Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir. Recalling her humble roots, Kramer offers this string of advice to new vintners: Experiment. Smell the wine to know when something is amiss. Read as much as possible. Take classes and join a winemaking club to share questions and answers. “Winemaking is fascinating, frustrating and exhilarating,” Kramer says. “Always focus on making good wine, not that every wine you make is good, because it won’t be. You can’t have an ego about this.” Winemaker Kramer has judged amateur contests since 1988 and had to sit it out this year. “It is such a shame [because] the Oregon State Fair Amateur Wine Competition is a wonderful venue to teach.” She says judges’ comments help amateurs learn. One exception to the wait-and-see group was Bob Bacolas, who organized the amateur winemaking contest for the Jackson County Harvest Fair this Sept. 25-26. Bacolas, the energetic owner of Grains, Beans and Things in Medford, said: “We’re going to apply the statute as it has historically been done. A lot of vintners started in their garage. A little ov Amateur radio 4FB, Athens, Ga., 1924 Ham station 4FB operated by Aaron Bush, Athens, Ga., from Radio News, March 1924. Located at 40 Meigs St., Athens, Ga "Station 4FB is located at Athens, Ga., 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. Practically the entire equipment is constructed by its owner and operator. "The four-wire inverted-L antenna is swung between poles placed in two trees, and is 60 feet long, The free end is 75 feet high, while the lead-in end is 50 feet above the ground. Due to the unfavorable nature of the ground, a four-wire counterpoise system 95 feet long, directly under the aerial is used. Large composition insulators are used throughout. "The transmitter consists of two units. Unit 'A' is the 1/2-K.W. spark set shown in photo. It consists of a Thordarson transformer, .0132 mfd. of Murdock molded condenser, and a rebuilt Wilcox rotor on a variable speed motor. A split-primary OT is used. This is made up of one turn of 4-in copper ribbon, 20 inches in diameter. The gap is efficiently muffled by a cover to permit operation during the early morning hours. When 8-inch coupling is used, the radiation is 3.0 amperes. The maximum working range of this set is 1,000 miles, although the signals were reported heard in England during the past T.A.'s. "With the advent of the summer season, and accompanying QRN, unit 'B' was installed. This is not shown in the photo, as it obscures the remainder of the apparatus. It is a 10-watt C.W. using rectified A.C. A 24-jar chemical rectifier, with borax solution smooths out the growl in the 60-cycle A.C., and 1,000 volts from a home-made transformer put the kick into the tubes. With 130 millliamperes on the plates, the radiation is 2.8 amps. During the five weeks in April and May in which the set was in operation it was heard in 35 states. Stations 1,000 miles away were worked on several occasions through bad QRN. "The receiver on the left is entirely home-made. It comprises a special short-wave variometer-variocoupler, three circuit tuner. Vernier variometers are used in grid and plate circuits, and are ideal for C.W. work through QRM. The wave-length range is 140 to 360 meters. Above the tuner is a panel in which are mounted three variable condensers and three D.P.D.T. switches. These condensers may be thrown across the variometers so as to reach the concert waves, or used in connection with the long-wave loose coupler on the extreme left. A detector and one-step amplifier adjacent to the tuner, complete the receiver. The wooden borax box, with Mazda light on top, contains an 80-volt acid-lead storage 'B' battery. The storage battery in the foreground furnishes juice for the relay-key in spark unit. "The receiver has given very gratifying results indeed. Except for day-light work, most of the C.W. reception is accomplished without any aerial, to minimize QRM and QRN. Almost all the states have been logged, including quite a number of west coast stations. Two 10-watt phones at a distance of 800 miles came in very QSA. "Due to college QRM, 4FB is on the air only during the spare time of the operator. (15) 1:43 West Midlands Police Peugeot 308 Response Car Here's my latest little creation, a 1:43 replica of one of the newest additons to West Midlands Police's Coventry fleet. I originally saw the vehicle itself in Tesco's car park two weeks ago - and what a vehicle - so a model had to be made! This model went through the usual modelling process, being a complete re-spray and was started pretty much from scratch. It features: -Half UK Police 'Battenburg' livery -LED Low-profile lightbar, just like the real thing. -New 'CV' style roofcodes, as vehicles registered from '59 plate onwards have. -'Coventry Police' bonnet decals and authentic WMP crests. -Single police comm's aerial -Authentic true-to-life numberplates -Front fend-off, and grille LED units All in all, I'm pretty pleased with how it's turned out. The 2011 Report on Precision Turned Products Made on CNC Equipment and Screw Machines for Medical Supplies: World Market Segmentation by City This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. (14) H-46 “Sea Knight” Helicopter The H-46 is a twin-turbine powered dual-piloted tandem-rotor helicopter. H-46 aircraft are powered by two General Electric T-58 Series engines. The aircraft is 16 feet 8 inches tall. There are six rotor blades on the aircraft, each measuring 25 feet 6 inches. With blades spread, the aircraft is 84 feet 4 inches long. The average weight of the H-46 is 18,000 pounds, with a maximum lift capability of 6,000 pounds. It can carry 25 combat-loaded troops, or can be outfitted to carry medical evacuation litters in case of disaster. It has the fuel endurance to stay airborne for approximately two hours, or up to three hours with an extra internal tank. The cabin contains provisions for accommodating 25 troops and crew members. The cabin also contains an integral cargo and rescue system. Readily identified among current Navy and Marine Corps helicopters are the H-46 series Sea Knights, with their tandem rotor configuration setting them apart from the single rotor design of other Navy/Marine helos. Tandem rotors have been a feature of all production helos built by Boeing/Vertol, and its original predecessor company, Piasecki. The H-46 “Sea Knight” helicopter is one of the largest helicopters in the US Navy inventory. The helicopter has the ability to land and taxi in the water in case of emergency, and is able to stay afloat for up to two hours in two-foot seas. Because of its tandem rotor design, the “Sea Knight” is an extremely versatile aircraft. It is able to excel in various flight maneuvers, such as rearward and sideward flight, while other helicopters are extremely limited. This makes the helicopter ideal for its primary Navy mission of vertical replenishment. The Sea Knight was originally designated the H-49. The Boeing CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter has served the US Navy and Marine Corps faithfully since the early 1960s. The Boeing Company Vertol Division, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, built H-46 aircraft in the 1960s and 1970s. It has had several major upgrades including: airframe conversions of H-46D and H-46F to CH-46E in the late 1970s, and the Safety, Reliability, and Maintainability Program which started in the late 1980s and completed in the early 1990s. As a Marine Corps platform, the H-46E is used primarily during cargo and troop transport. The United States Marine Corps has been flying the CH-46 Sea knight helicopter, commonly known as the "Phrog," since 1962. The Phrog is a descendant of Boeing's first turbine-powered helicopter -- the Boeing 107 -- which first appeared in 1958, and which is still flying various missions throughout the world. In 1961, the USMC picked the CH-46 as its new medium-lift troop transport, replacing the ageing UH-34. Over 600 Phrogs were delivered to the USMC between 1962 and 1971. By the early 1990s fewer than 250 airframes were still flying in the Corps. USMC CH-46Es are scheduled to be replaced by the MV-22. The Marine's CH-46Es will gradually be reduced from the current 226 to 5 by 2015, the last year the H-46 will be in the rotorcraft inventory. Some sources mention an "RH-46" minesweeper and a "VH-46F" VIP transport, but these are very poorly attested and specifics are lacking. The UH-46A was a CH-46A modified for Navy vertical replenishment program, and the UH-46D was a CH-46D modified for Navy vertical replenishment program. This venerable aircraft's primary mission areas in the Navy (as the H-46D) include Combat Logistics Support and Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP), Search and Rescue, and Special Operations. The unique tandem-rotor design of the Sea Knight permits increased agility and superior handling qualities in strong relative winds from all directions, allowing, in particular, rapid direction changes during low airspeed maneuvering. This capability has resulted in the safe, efficient and graceful transfer of many millions of tons of cargo and many thousands of passengers over the years. In 1958, Vertol completed a company sponsored prototype of a new helicopter design, powered by two Lycoming T-53 turbine engines for potential military or civilian use. The 107 first flew in April, exhibiting most of the basic configuration characteristics to be found in all of its 107-series successors. The Army ordered three YHC-1As which were developed as GE-T-58-powered military evaluation vehicles under a Bureau of Aeronautics contract. First flying in August 1959, the YHC-1As were followed by an improved commercial/export model, the 107-11. During 1960, the Marines evolved a requirement for a twin-turbine troop/cargo assault helicopter to replace the piston engine types then in use. Following a design competition with the HR3S , Boeing/Vertol was selected to build its model 107M as the HRB-1, early in 1961. The official military designation of HRB–1 (H-Helicopter, R-Transport, B-Boeing) was given the 107 along with the nickname of Sea Knight. The HRB–1 followed the typical Vertol design having two rotors in tandem. Freder, who has regained his sanity and his backlight, and Grot, the bumptious key grip, try to help an IATSE shop steward and two ragtag guards from studio security protect the equipment, but it's no use. When the mob kills the main sync bus, the whole place goes down, which cuts all electric power to the Great City above. The rich types, who have been lapsing ever further into perdition since faux-Maria did that hootchy-koo Salome number in the club, dance their way through the Apocalypse, while the city dies around them. Maybe the band plays Nearer My God to Thee and maybe it doesn't... it's a silent movie. If you're lucky, you'll be watching the print where Freder springs Maria and they are able to rescue the children just as the pumps fail, sinking the post production grotto deeper than anything Katrina was able to do. If you're lucky, there'll be a crosscut to the workers, who are told their children have drowned. They don't like this at all. They spurn faux-Maria as a False Prophet and, as befits a story that is basically Western Christian semiology on steroids, burn her at the stake. You don't piss off engineers. Fortunately for everyone, faux-Maria's skin melts off in the fire, and everyone is able to see that she's second-hand Magnasync iron all the way. If you're lucky, and didn't get the wretched Paramount cut they showed in the US originally, there'll now be quite the climactic cliff-hanging battle between Freder and Rotwang, high atop (what else?) a huge cathedral. Rotwang is dispatched. He's dead, Jim. Real-Maria is saved. She's able to unify the above the line and below the line people, which is more than anyone else in The Industry has ever managed to do. Freder, who as we know is Heart, gets his dad (Mind/ AMPTP) to shake on the deal with Grot (Hands/ IATSE/ NABET/ SAG/ AFTRA). Maria's prophecy is fulfilled. The Marxian class struggle is over. The Thesis and Antithesis have reached a final Synthesis - the Absolute. Mankind is redeemed, at least for 73 years until the US Supreme Court picks the wrong president, the middle class gets a big one right where the sun don't shine, and the whole dialectical groove-thang starts all over again... but that's another movie...
