Los Angeles, CA Bullock's Department Store Bullock's Department Store was founded in 1907 at Broadway and Seventh by John G. Bullock. Interestingly he had worked at the Broadway up the street and opened this store with the support of the Broadway Department Store owner Arthur Letts. Bullock's became one of the dominant chains in Southern California. It was acquired by Federated Department Stores in 1964 and was sold to Macy's in 1988. Federated acquired it again in 1993, after Macy's filed for bankruptcy. In 1996, Federated bought the Broadway chain and merged everything and renamed everything Macy's. Bullock's is an example of how a department store grew by accretion. This was their first building constructed in 1907 and designed by John Parkinson. They slowly took over the entire southern half of this block by acquiring and absorbind other buildings (such as the B.H. Dyas Department Store). Bullock's left this building in anticipation of their new store in the Citicorp Plaza (now 7+Fig at Ernst & Young Plaza). This building is still in use today as the St. Vincent's Jewelry Center, and believe it or not this portion was transformed into a parking garage! PICT000219 I came up with this a few years ago when I ran into 2 bad fan motors in the same week and the replacements were on indefinate back order. I asked my customer how this worked while he waited for the parts. He said it kept the food just fine. March 9, 2010 [148/365] Several months ago the clutch drive on the blender broke and we thought the binder was fit for the garbage. After months of procrastinating we found the replacement part online for $15USD and now the blender blends again. St. Augustine Cathedral, Tucson, Arizona Tucson (pronounced /ČtuĐsQn/) is a city in and the county seat of Pima County, Arizona, United States,[5] located 118 miles (188 km) southeast of Phoenix and 60 miles (98 km) north of the U.S.-Mexico border. As of July 1, 2006, a Census Bureau estimate puts the city's population at 525,529,[6] with a metropolitan area population at 1,023,320 as of July 1, 2008. In 2005, Tucson ranked as the 32nd largest city and 52nd largest metropolitan area in the United States. It is the largest city in southern Arizona and the second largest in the state. Tucson is the site of the University of Arizona. Major incorporated suburbs of Tucson include Oro Valley and Marana northwest of the city, Sahuarita south of the city, and South Tucson in an enclave south of downtown. Communities in the vicinity of Tucson (some within or overlapping the city limits) include Casas Adobes, Catalina, Catalina Foothills, Flowing Wells, Green Valley, Tanque Verde, New Pascua, Vail and Benson. The English name Tucson derives from the Spanish name of the city, Tucsón [tukČson], which was borrowed from the O'odham name Cuk bon (pronounced [§Šk ‚Tn], roughly "chook shown"), meaning "at the base of the black [hill]", a reference to an adjacent volcanic mountain. Tucson is sometimes referred to as "The Old Pueblo". Tucson was probably first visited by Paleo-Indians, known to have been in southern Arizona by about 12,000 years ago. Recent archaeological excavations near the Santa Cruz River have located a village site dating from 4,000 years ago. The floodplain of the Santa Cruz River was extensively farmed during the Early Agricultural period, circa 1200 BC to AD 150. These people constructed irrigation canals and grew corn, beans, and other crops while gathering wild plants and hunting animals. The Early Ceramic period occupation of Tucson saw the first extensive use of pottery vessels for cooking and storage. The groups designated by archaeologists as the Hohokam lived in the area from AD 600 to 1450 and are known for their red-on-brown pottery. Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino visited the Santa Cruz River valley in 1692, and founded the Mission San Xavier del Bac about 7 miles (12 km) upstream from the site of the settlement of Tucson in 1700. The Spanish established a walled fortress, Presidio San Agustín del Tucson, on August 20, 1775 (near the present downtown Pima County Courthouse). Eventually the town came to be called "Tucson" and became a part of Mexico after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. Following the Gadsden purchase in 1853, Tucson became a part of the United States of America, although the American military did not formally take over control of the community until March 1856. From August 1861, until mid-1862, Tucson was the capital of the Confederate Arizona Territory. Until 1863, Tucson and all of Arizona was part of New Mexico Territory. From 1867 to 1877, Tucson was the capital of Arizona Territory. The University of Arizona, located in Tucson, was founded in 1885. By 1900, 7,531 people lived in the city. At about this time, the US Veterans Administration had begun construction on the present Veterans Hospital. Many veterans who had been gassed in World War I and were in need of respiratory therapy began coming to Tucson after the war, due to the clean dry air. The population increased gradually to 13,913 in 1910, 20,292 in 1920, and 36,818 in 1940. In 2006 the population of Pima County, in which Tucson is located, passed one million while the City of Tucson's population was 535,000. During the territorial and early statehood periods, Tucson was Arizona's largest city and commercial center, while Phoenix was the seat of state government (beginning in 1889) and agriculture. The establishment of Tucson Municipal Airport increased its prominence. Between the 1910 and 1920, Phoenix surpassed Tucson in population, and has continued to outpace Tucson in growth. However, both Tucson and Phoenix have experienced among the highest growth rates in the U.S. According to the United States Census Bureau, Tucson has a total area of 195.1 square miles (505.3 km˛), of which, 194.7 square miles (504.2 km˛) of it is land and 0.4 square miles (1.1 km˛) of it (0.22%) is water. The city's elevation is 2,389 ft (728 m) above sea level. Tucson is situated on an alluvial plain in the Sonoran desert, surrounded by five minor ranges of mountains: the Santa Catalina Mountains and the Tortolita Mountains to the north, the Santa Rita Mountains to the south, the Rincon Mountains to the east, and the Tucson Mountains to the west. The high point of the Santa Catalina Mountains is 9,157-foot (2,791 m) Mount Lemmon, the southernmost ski destination in the continental U.S., while the Tucson Mountains include 4,687-foot (1,429 m) Wasson Peak. The city is located on the Santa Cruz River, formerly a perennial river but now a dry river bed for much of the year (called a "wash" locally St Andrew's Interfaith Centre, Bradford 8.26pm - Boxing Day 2009, Bradford, West Yorkshire. The fire alarm cut across the early evening T.V at the fire station, and within a couple of minutes the appliance was on the road. The report had come in of a building fire on Listerhills Road, east of the city centre. There was snow on the ground; it had been there since the first snow of the winter on the 17th, and since then, the temperature had rarely risen above freezing. A crowd had begun to gather as the first pump pulled up at the Interfaith Centre. At it's peak, six appliances and over forty firefighters from the surrounding area, including Bradford, Fairweather Green and Odsal were needed. This is the Interfaith centre, two months on. The Interfaith centre played a very important part in education across Bradford, a city still very divided ethnically. Primary schools in Bradford are still, through the nature of the population, very polarised by race. Classes in Manningham and Girlington are frequently 100% Asian, yet less than two miles away, in places like Swain House and Idle, they can be 100% white. The Interfaith centre played a significant role in connecting the faiths by providing resources, outreach work and the aim to bridge the enormous difference between the different groups. To see it like this was very sad. What now for this place? With it being listed, it isn't just a case of knocking it down. Already the surveyors have been here, and, at least for the moment, yet another part of Bradford clings on. The Interfaith centre is currently in temporary accommodation at the home of Education Bradford, Future House. Obit for James Decker, from Owasco/Cayuga Hist. Soc., no date, but he died August 10, 1887: The funeral of James Decker was held at his late residence near Dresserville, this morning. Mr. Decker was eighty four years old, was a kind and obliging neighbor and had many friends. No date, from Cayuga/Owasco Lake Hist. Soc.: Dwelling house burned--The house of James Decker, of Dresserville, burned to the ground on Thursday afternoon of last week, in the absence of the inmates. The house was occupied by George Ripley, who was absent at Homer that day, while Mrs. Ripley was engaged at one of the neighbors, and the children were at school. The fire is supposed to have originated in a defective stove pipe and was discovered by the neighbors, not in time to save the dwelling, though they did rescue the greater portion of its contents. The house was insured for $350 in the --- of this village, which ---- of its value, and the people have generously contributed to the relief of Mr. Riply and his wife. Luther, Moravia, NY I visited the "hall of records" in Dresserville and got James's death certificate from a great old book, and visited this cemetery on a snowy day over spring break about 1998, and saw how the forest has reclaimed it; but I suspect ground sonar and a backhoe could do wonders here. The Writer's Room Here I am showing off the weight I've lost. The books scattered around are for my research paper. Research shows that people who spend more time standing throughout the day get more movement overall than people who sit. The quantity of movements a person engages in, no matter how small, correlates with long-term maintenance of weight loss goals. Hence, I adjusted my IKEA Galant desk from its lowest setting (previously ideal for ergonomics) to its highest setting (standing height). I'm impressed with its flexibility in this regard, it's really maintained its value. Also pictured is an IKEA Brada laptop stand that I'm using to bring printed matter up to reading level. Grand National day, April 2011.........Red Rum, the king of all steeplechasers! Statuette in Wayfarers arcade, Southport. My favourite ever racehorse, along with Desert Orchid. This small unassuming jumper, became the hero of the Grand national. Winning 3 times, and second twice. I saw him many times trotting to the beach with Donald McCains string, or actually galloping along the endless sands. Many people close to Rummy, said that the fact that he used to continually wade through seawater, healed a serious foot problem. In 1978 Dennis, the fire appliance manufacterers, had built their 100th fire engine.(NTJ 100S) It was destined to be stationed at North 7 station, Southport, Merseyside. As a tribute to Dennis, and Red Rum, it was decided that this engine would be named "Red Rum", and had a chrome nameplate attached to it, along with one of his horseshoes. My claim to fame is I drove this machine many times at work, being stationed at Southport for some years. Red Rum is now buried at Aintree racecourse, at the finishing post. For me the national is a fantastic battle of man and horse, but has never held the same excitement as those years in the late 70,s. Sleep well old freind, no animal ever deserved their rest more. It's a huge improvement because you can now get to the fuses and the wiring from the side rather than working from the top, down to a depth of about 80cm - that was awkward, now is much easier. (The panel hinges outwards and down, leaving a large opening to allow access to the inside of the box.) Nothing's wired up yet except the ammeter so I can keep an eye on the solar panel charge, but the lights and stuff are still connected inside. And yes the meters are misaligned, my own fault I drilled one from the wrong side and got the measurement wrong. If you look carefully, you can see that I've already repainted the trim around the door right next to the stove (it's a nice true white like my cabinets, while the rest of the trim in the room is still the dingy beige--I'm working on getting the rest of the trim repainted next!) Nautical White Kitchen We're dealing with different ceiling heights and a beam and a refrigerator that could not be removed or moved. The solution is to let it be!
