Grand National day, April 2011.........Red Rum, the king of all steeplechasers! Statuette in Wayfarers arcade, Southport.
My favourite ever racehorse, along with Desert Orchid. This small unassuming jumper, became the hero of the Grand national. Winning 3 times, and second twice.
I saw him many times trotting to the beach with Donald McCains string, or actually galloping along the endless sands. Many people close to Rummy, said that the fact that he used to continually wade through seawater, healed a serious foot problem.
In 1978 Dennis, the fire appliance manufacterers, had built their 100th fire engine.(NTJ 100S) It was destined to be stationed at North 7 station, Southport, Merseyside. As a tribute to Dennis, and Red Rum, it was decided that this engine would be named "Red Rum", and had a chrome nameplate attached to it, along with one of his horseshoes. My claim to fame is I drove this machine many times at work, being stationed at Southport for some years.
Red Rum is now buried at Aintree racecourse, at the finishing post. For me the national is a fantastic battle of man and horse, but has never held the same excitement as those years in the late 70,s.
Sleep well old freind, no animal ever deserved their rest more.
