Penetrating Bayesian Spam Filters Today's attacks against Bayesian spam filters attempt to keep the content of spam emails visible to humans, but obscured to filters, or they attempt to fool the filters with additional good words appended to the spam. Attacks of this kind have characteristics that are detectable by spam filters, but there is another conceivable approach: one could substitute suspicious words in spam emails with innocent words to make the spam emails appear as legitimate emails (i.e., ham emails). In this book, first, Bayesian spam filtering, including its mathematical foundation, is described. Then, other anti-spam approaches are presented to highlight specific strengths and weaknesses of Bayesian spam filters. Existing attacks against Bayesian spam filters are shown, after which substitution attacks are analyzed: the preconditions of this new kind of attack are examined, and the effectiveness of substitution attacks is measured for three different spam filters. "Penetrating Bayesian Spam Filters" is aimed at computer security specialists, developers of Bayesian spam filters, and anyone interested in the limits of currently used spam filtering technology. 28/02/11 - Cheap filters are a life-saver! Well, this picture is exactly what it looks like. My UV filter with a big smear of dog slobber on it. The danger of taking close-up pictures of your dog is that one day they will lick your camera. Well, that day has finally come. Luckily that filter only cost me about ?6, and Mikie wiped it down afterwards for me! Ember didn't seem to mind that much. I just hope she hasn't got a taste for it... pink filter I took a crappy uv filter and colored the top half pink with a glass marker. I'm going to try this some more when I get some more cheap filters. This should be pretty neat for landscapes. When you've achieved the desired strength push the plunger down and steeping is arrested. Who knows more about tea than the British? When the British Tea Council asked Bodum to develop a new way of brewing tea, the result was this unique press that's almost as much fun to look at as it is to use. Simply fill the strainer with tea leaves and add boiling water--a slow process, but well worth the time. (You could also use tea bags, but why would you want to?) The clear jug lets you see the tea as it's steeping, allowing you to customize its strength to your taste. When the tea is strong enough, slowly depress the plunger to stop the brewing. You won't have any tea leaves to read at the bottom of your cup, but there's no mess and no need to remove the strainer before you pour. But be forewarned: the Bodum press doesn't retain heat quite as well as a traditional teapot, so you might want to use a tea cozy if you're not drinking the whole pot in one sitting. It's a shame to cover up such a beautiful design, but that's the way the tea leaf tumbles. --Mary Park (6) Chinese Christians feel let down by Archbishop's visit The TimesOctober 24, 2006 Chinese Christians feel let down by Archbishop's visit From Jane Macartney in Beijing THE Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, was criticised last night by Christians and human rights campaigners for failing to lobby China’s leaders hard on religious freedoms. Dr Williams ended a two-week visit to China saying that he was encouraged about the future of Christianity in the world’s largest Communist, and officially atheist, state. He sought to avoid controversy at a pre-departure press conference, ducking opportunities to criticise Beijing’s record on religion and instead praising the easing of controls. But outspoken and high-profile members of China’s underground church said Dr Williams’s experience had been filtered by officials. Yu Jie, an author, said Dr Williams had visited only churches officially sanctioned by the State: “Nor did he see or talk to any real Christians,” he said. “His view of China’s religious conditions is very positive, but this isn’t in accordance with the facts.” Dr Williams did raise questions about half a dozen arrested Christians, and about Tibet and relations with the Vatican, and said he had gained a clearer understanding of China’s religious culture. “We’re a long way past the Cultural Revolution — we’re a long way past a situation where there is a systematic attempt to block out or extirpate religion,” he said. The Government’s increased willingness to allow religious groups a role in civil society was encouraging. Beijing officials say that religious freedom is enshrined in the constitution and citizens are free to attend ceremonies at churches, mosques and temples under state control. International rights groups have accused China of jailing Catholic priests, as well as Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns, for remaining loyal to the Pope and the Dalai Lama respectively. Mr Yu, a recent convert to an underground – or home – church, said that he was not optimistic that the Archbishop’s trip would lead to an improvement in circumstances for Christians here. He said: “Everything was arranged by the Patriotic Church and the Archbishop didn’t go to any home churches. Nor did he see or talk to any real Christians.” The Archbishop did raise the issue of Pastor Cai Zhaohua, sentenced in 2005 to three years in prison for illegally printing Bibles. The only official response was a request for more information. Mr Yu, who met President Bush at the White House in May, said his American host voiced much tougher criticism of religious persecution in China. Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said: “The Archbishop should be raising concerns about religious freedoms broadly and publicly and telling the Chinese authorities they have no right to restrict these freedoms.” China has between 40 and 80 million active Christians, divided between state-run and underground churches. The number of believers has exploded in recent years. Dr Williams said he had been surprised by how full churches had been and added that relaxing of controls would take time. “You don’t turn the ocean liner around in five minutes,”he added. Photoshop to the Rescue I took this image as we drove towards the town of Ping'An in the Longii Rice Terraces. The image was quite bland, especially the background hills and the sky. Both were washed out by the haze in the air and by the strong sunlight. I restored it as best as I could in Lightroom using gradient filters, etc., but it still lacked the colour punch and contrast I was after. So I exported it to Photoshop CS5 which I am trying to learn and began applying some of its tools like lab colour and blending layers of the image that I had set to different exposure levels, and presto, this is what I got. Bridge Over Troubled Water Erskine Bridge spanning the River Clyde, Scotland. ___________ After a disappointing weekend of grey skies in Loch Lomond I was looking for a photo opportunity on the drive home. I figured the Erskine Bridge would act as a good focal point and the bank of the River Clyde was surprisingly easy to get onto :) I used the B&W ND110 Neutral Density filter to achieve a long exposure so I could capture a smooth sky and a reflection of the bridge in the river. The scene lacked colour due to the snow, so I thought it suited a black and white conversion. ___________ The Erskine Bridge is a cable-stayed box girder bridge spanning the River Clyde in west central Scotland, connecting West Dunbartonshire with Renfrewshire. During construction of the bridge, a major collapse of the West Gate Bridge in Australia, a bridge of a similar construction, saw re-calculations in the design and it was found that it would fail to meet new standards developed as a result of the Merrison Report on the collapse of West Gate Bridge. As such, the bridge was stiffened following construction. Until early 2006, it was a toll bridge. The bridge was designed by William Brown and opened on 2 July 1971 by HRH Princess Anne. It has a 524 m main span and two 68 m approach spans and is 38 m high and 1310m (4300 ft) long. The ceremonial plaque of the opening can be viewed on the railings of the western footpath, at the centre of the main span. The bridge connects the M8 motorway at Erskine in Renfrewshire on the south side to the A82 road at Old Kilpatrick in West Dunbartonshire on the northern side. The bridge itself is the A898 road and its short approach from the south is the M898 motorway. The Erskine Bridge is the most downstream of all the Clyde bridges, and is the last point at which the estuary can be crossed by road. Its main function is to divert traffic away from Glasgow and the urban stretches of the A82 which run through the city's West End and outer suburbs. As a result, the bridge is heavily used by tourist traffic from Glasgow International Airport bound for Loch Lomond and the north west Highlands. As part of a trunk road, it is the responsibility of the Scottish Executive, and was one of only three toll bridges in Scotland when the tolls were abolished on 31 March 2006 – the others being the Forth Road Bridge and the Tay Road Bridge, where tolls were abolished on 11 February 2008. The bridge had (briefly) been free of charge before - in 2001 an oversight caused the legislative order enforcing the toll to lapse and drivers crossed uncharged until the new order was enforced. Its current traffic levels are estimated at 35,000 vehicles per day. For many years the bridge was considered something of a white elephant given its elaborate design yet relatively low traffic levels compared to the congested Kingston Bridge further upstream. It was expected to have a major increase in traffic since toll removal, but this has not happened to any significant degree. On 4 August 1996 the bridge was damaged when an oil rig being towed down the River Clyde collided with the deck. The bridge re-opened to pedestrians and cyclists on 22 August, to cars and motorcycles on 30 August and to Heavy Goods Vehicles on 22 December 1996. The bridge is one of Scotland's most notorious suicide spots: estimates suggest that more than 15 people kill themselves there each year. ___________ "Tweed Tranquility" NSW Australia I had just finished a business meeting and sunset was upon us, so i drove from tweed heads along the river and found this little spot almost underneath the M1 Freeway. I had just enough time to park and get set up to catch the sunset but there were quite a few people around so i had to choose my moment to get the pier with no one on it so the shot worked. I only managed about 5 shots and then a got going as the drive home in peak hour traffic was not something i was looking forward too. So instead of having it work flawlessly, it is just one mm too long and causes vignetting with a polarizing filter. Not a huge deal since I crop most of my images anyway to 3/2, but still an issue. The real improvement is how well it works with the 0.8 WC-DC10, it completely removes the stress on the servo and the lens focuses much better through it and not just at the widest angle. There is some vignetting evident in the picture before distortion correction, but after correction the vignetting is cropped out (i.e. not a problem). Engine compartment The prior owner sprayed a few items orange and added braided hose covering as you can see in the picture. The engine has a Weiand intake manifold, Edelbrock carb (It is new and I have the original box), Mallory ignition and finned Corvette valve covers. I am not sure of the cam specs. The engine is a small journal 327 forged crank from a early 60's Corvette. The stamp pad has no numbers on it. It was factory rated at 350 or 375 horsepower. I was told that the engine was rebuilt a few years ago. The car has manual 4 wheel drum brakes with a dual pot master cylinder and original suspension. The battery has been relocated to the trunk. There are no issues with the subframe or suspension. I planned on rebuilding the original suspension and restoring the engine compartment. The horn relays and horn have been sprayed orange also. The wipers, lights and horn are functional. The car runs and drives. I have changed the oil and filter, transmission fluid and rear end fluid/gasket and added the correct GM positraction additive already. I planned moving the battery back to its original location while restoring the engine compartment with correct items and paint shades for that year. SoLo engine A small block Chevy for the '63 Impala SoLo project, minus the chrome accessories. The chrome will be installed during final assembly to minimize the chance of damage. For a Revell kit (85-6682), this engine is a disappointment. The entire upper half (heads,intake,carb,distributor,and radiator hose) was molded as a unit. The same is true for the lower half (oil pan, oil filter, fuel pump, and starter). Since this is intended to be a relaxing build, I won't be detailing it beyond what you see here. This is the first time I've coordinated the engine color with the body color. IMG 5354 Furnace and water heater. Not visible are the air conditioning condensation pipe which violates county ordinances and I tripped over four times during the inspection, and the inoperable sump pump. Once again, though, as far as systems are concerned, I got off lightly. The three biggies (furnace, A/C, and water heater) are all in good working order. I do need to get my ductwork cleaned and replace the filter on the furnace. Heat exchanger The heat exchanger handles 80K BTUs which is what is needed for the hot air furnace. Somehow, there is 500 sq. foot surface area of copper coil inside this cylinder to cycle/filter the water between the boiler and the furnace coil. The water comes in to the exchanger on a steel pipe and leaves in a copper pipe and heads to the furnace.
