(10) Baby Girl Quilt Back in the beginning of this year when I discovered I was pregnant, I decided that I wanted to make a quilt for the baby and have it ready for when he/she came. (I think my motives were that it would give me an excuse to make a girl's quilt - we had three sons at that point). So here is the girl's quilt, finished about 3 weeks before our fourth son was born! He came 2 weeks early, and that is my excuse for not having his quilt finished. I'm about halfway there though! The inspiration for my quilt is the Le Jardin quilt pattern I've seen here in Flickr. I pieced the strips, and then assembled the quilt according to the quilt as you go directions on the Quilt Taffy blog. It was nice to do the last few steps at the same time. (6) SANDS - the life I thought I'd have (04/05) This book represents so much to me, I bought it in the autumn of 2004 when I was expecting twins and read up on how to cope with the whole twin pregnancy, birth, juggling babies and raising confident twins thing. The book has stayed on my shelf ever since December 2004, not the well thumbed tome I thought it would be - because I have never had to juggle 2 babies at once or wonder which twin is taking the lead, or enjoy them lying in their crib together, or listen to them chatter in their own language - because my twins arrived early and went to the NICU and my tiny baby boy Thomas (twin 2) died when he was 2 days old leaving Jonny (twin1) as a twin survivior and our lives forever altered. The twin buggy, the second cot, second carseat were all returned but the book I kept not because I will ever have need of it but to remind me of the woman I was and the life I hoped to lead before my baby died. Until it happened to us I knew no-one whose baby had died, I wish that was still true but unfortunately it isn't - we aren't alone in our pain - today 17 other parents will have felt that overwhelming disbelief that they won't be taking their baby home with them. Some cold, hard facts: • 17 babies die every day in the UK (10 are stillbirths, 7 are neonatal deaths) totalling almost 6,500 baby deaths a year - the equivalent of 16 jumbo jets crashing every year with no survivors • This is four times the number of people who die every year of MRSA • This is double the number of adults who lose their lives on Britain’s roads every year • Ten times more babies are stillborn than die of cot death every year in the UK. • The stillbirth rate has remained almost unchanged for the past 10 years. (CEMACH) • 1 in every 200 babies are stillborn in the UK • 1 in every 300 babies born in the UK die in the first four weeks of life • In half of all stillbirths the cause remains unexplained, although in more than half of these pregnancies the baby is smaller than it should be • Many of these babies are born perfectly formed, with no clear reason why they died. We need to understand what is causing these deaths and take action to prevent avoidable losses • The majority of unexplained stillbirths are in pregnancies that were previously considered low risk Sands is the UK’s Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity, an organisation which offers support to everyone affected by the death of a baby during pregnancy or after birth. I figured, how hard could it be -- crocheting blocks, seaming them, blocking the thing and backing it with fleece? Well, the crocheting the blocks part was the only easy thing about this. Seaming was a pain, blocking was a pain, and backing it was probably one of the most frustrating things I've done in my entire life. BUT it's done, and I like it. There are ties at each corner to fasten it down in the buggy. The cross block pattern is from the 200 Crochet Blocks book. The snowflakes are from the snowfire pattern in the Great Grannie Crochet Book. The basic grannies are just from my head, I can't remember where I learned them. A lion for Leon .... This is the topper to go on Leon's two tier Christening cake which I am making for next weekend. I was asked for a lion to go on the top and as Leon has a toy lion we decided to go down the toy route for the cake decorations. His mother liked my Noah's Ark Christening cake so I will add a few other animals but again they will be toy versions ....... or at least that's the grand plan! Although all's OK now (fingers crossed! ) I had a major disaster with this last night ...... I had made the basic lion on Saturday and was thrilled that for once it had turned out just as I visualised it ! I then let it dry overnight before I added the mane yesterday afternoon. Problem number one was with my very basic plunger type clay gun ..... I physically couldn't push the modelling paste through, so DH was called in to help. Mane on and looking good I retired to have a spell on flickr ! I then returned to the kitchen before I went to bed at 11pm to find that, in spite of a cocktail stick support, my lion's head had slid halfway down his right shoulder obviously due to the weight of his mane! Panic stations! I then had to remove his head ..... trying not to damage it and the mane that had taken so much effort .... add a second cocktail stick and reposition it, this time using royal icing instead of sugar glue! I hardly dared look this morning ..... but it appears fine .... so far ! With hindsight I should really have gone down the Rice Crispie route for this but having never done that before I was reluctant to experiment ! Anyway I am very pleased with the end result ...... you don't often hear me say that, do you? ....... and I hope the other animals will be less problematical ! The colour scheme for the cake is sandy yellow, baby blue and white. All made of modelling paste ...... sitting on a 6" drum to give you an idea of scale. (14) Cradle shaped baby card One of my Labor Day treasures included a baby book for a child born 81 years ago in 1930. My quest will be to try to look up his family. Most of the meaningful photos appear to have been removed, but there are lots of cards and stories related by his mother that someone in the family may want to be reunited with. He had an older brother Bob and sister Betty (Sissy), he had whooping cough and chicken pox in Jan 1935, he was chubby and of the Church of Christ faith, and was born at House of Mercy Hospital in Pittsfield, Mass; where he at least graduated from Jr. High. Meanwhile, I have enjoyed piecing together his story, and have a lovely album illustrated in soft black and white by Mabel Betsy Hill. I'll be posting her illustrations as I have posted Janet Laura Scott's for a baby album published at approximately the same time. What wonderful baby albums these were! Baby Shower "first day of spring" This tiered creation was designed for a baby shower taking place on the first day of spring. Slender chocolate twigs wrap each layer and are bundled with satin Jack and Jill ribbon, fresh spring blossoms and pale pink baby blocks spill from the top of each layer. A little infant in bonnet and blanket is cradled inside a ceramic eggshell nestled in a bed of blossoms. I wanted a shower cake that was elegant, sophisticated, soft and feminine. One day (either late 1961 or early 1962), I was with Lester Sill at his office on Sunset; we were going over a new song of mine when the telephone interrupted us. It was Phil Spector asking Lester to join him at Harmony Recording Studios in Hollywood. I figured even a musical genius likes moral support and to ask for other opinions once in a while. Since I was with Lester when the call came, he invited me to join him in the studio booth to watch while Phil put the finishing touches on "Uptown." Phil was already a well known producer, so I felt fortunate to be invited to watch him work. There were two musicians in the studio when we arrived and Phil was busy adding flamenco guitar to the record's introduction. I was immediately impressed with his intensity - he knew exactly what he wanted to hear. Once he was satisfied with the guitar work, it only took one take for the percussionist to successfully add castanets. Flamenco guitar and castanets gave the arrangement a Spanish flavor which impressed me and demonstrated Phil's originality. As I watched him, I remember thinking,"This guy could cut hit records anywhere. He doesn't need to be at Gold Star with Stan Ross or Larry Levine (Stan's cousin) or anyone else." Although he had a slender frame physically, to me he became a giant when he got behind the producer's microphone. After staying in Los Angeles for a while, Phil returned to New York for reasons unknown to me. The next time I saw him in town, I couldn't help noticing his changed appearance. He had grown a goatee and now wore a dark suit and tie. This was unusual, for West Coast independent producers those days usually wore t-shirts and jeans. These changes, which Phil apparently adopted while in Manhattan, were striking and set him apart as an individual with style. I also remember he almost always wore a certain cologne, the name of which I can't remember. It was a little sweet smelling, but I bought a bottle of the stuff. Some of the music people started growing goatees and upgrading their wardrobes due to Phil's influence. Maybe they thought some of Phil's genius would rub off if they imitated his appearance. Anyhow, he was definitely a style trendsetter for many of us. Steve Douglas was a long-time friend of Phil's and began contracting the musicians for him here in Los Angeles, calling all the musicians for the record dates. Because of Steve's friendship with Jack Nitszche and Sonny Bono, Jack became Phil's arranger and Sonny Bono worked as the record promotion person for Spector. That's how the business was back then. Because of my friendship with Steve, Jack and Sonny, I was privileged to sit in the booth with Phil while he recorded many of those wonderful sessions at Gold Star. Phil did things I never thought of doing. Instead of using a single bass on the basic track, he would have four people playing bass in unison. Instead of one guitar, he would have five or six playing the same rhythm, and so on. This use of so many instruments was a blessing to the musicians and their wallets. Many became wealthy as a matter of fact. This production technique magnified the sound of the instruments, which bled into the other microphones in the studio, and helped create the famous "Wall of Sound". Another ingredient that added to the "Wall" sound was the famous Gold Star echo chamber designed by David Gold, Stan's partner. Phil would take a tape of the session home, or over to Lester's office and listen to it over and over again. Then, deciding what to add, he would call Hal Blaine, or any other musician he needed, back into the studio to overdub and "sweeten" crucial points within the record. This was very effective and enhanced the backgrounds greatly. Of course, some producers - myself included - could not afford to do such things. Phil had become so successful that money was no object. Because of the "Wall of Sound," the great material Phil had access to, and the wonderful artists who performed the songs, the hits churned out of Gold Star. Some of them I can remember off hand are "He's a Rebel" and "Da Doo Ron Ron" by the Crystals; "Be My Baby" by the Ronnettes; "Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah" by Bob E. Sox & the Blue Jeans; and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers. Also Phil's classic album, "A Christmas Gift for You". I recall the night Phil scheduled the session for "He's a Rebel" and feeling the anticipation while sitting in the booth next to him. There was always an air of excitement and a lot of noise in the studio at Gold Star during his sessions. Especially at the beginning, before the recordings began. Jack Nitszche would be going over the parts with the musicians and some would be tuning up their instruments or practicing their part. The playsuit is a khaki suiting with fine white pinstripes, with blue piping and lining upcycled from a men's dress shirt. The shoulder straps and inseam have ivory resin snaps instead of buttons and snap tape, just because I had recently gotten a snap setter and wanted to try it out! Short on space - use cloth diapers! My collection of pocket diapers and all-in-ones fit under the sink. Fitted diapers (for night time use) are stacked in a box on a shelf next, with wipes and covers. Brilliant! Changing mat on top of the washing machine. Baby Cloths Bear Feet shoes are the very best for baby! Along with The Thymes Sweetleaf baby soap. I knit the Accidental Bobble Cloth with Cotton Tots yarn and I used Patons Grace for the smaller cloth. A lion for Leon .... This is the topper to go on Leon's two tier Christening cake which I am making for next weekend. I was asked for a lion to go on the top and as Leon has a toy lion we decided to go down the toy route for the cake decorations. His mother liked my Noah's Ark Christening cake so I will add a few other animals but again they will be toy versions ....... or at least that's the grand plan! Although all's OK now (fingers crossed! ) I had a major disaster with this last night ...... I had made the basic lion on Saturday and was thrilled that for once it had turned out just as I visualised it ! I then let it dry overnight before I added the mane yesterday afternoon. Problem number one was with my very basic plunger type clay gun ..... I physically couldn't push the modelling paste through, so DH was called in to help. Mane on and looking good I retired to have a spell on flickr ! I then returned to the kitchen before I went to bed at 11pm to find that, in spite of a cocktail stick support, my lion's head had slid halfway down his right shoulder obviously due to the weight of his mane! Panic stations! I then had to remove his head ..... trying not to damage it and the mane that had taken so much effort .... add a second cocktail stick and reposition it, this time using royal icing instead of sugar glue! I hardly dared look this morning ..... but it appears fine .... so far ! With hindsight I should really have gone down the Rice Crispie route for this but having never done that before I was reluctant to experiment ! Anyway I am very pleased with the end result ...... you don't often hear me say that, do you? ....... and I hope the other animals will be less problematical ! The colour scheme for the cake is sandy yellow, baby blue and white. All made of modelling paste ...... sitting on a 6" drum to give you an idea of scale.
