151/365 - Taking it Back to Old School So I went to an 80's dance party yesterday. It was very fun. :) We danced to all 80's music, and it was weird, because I actually knew the songs.. except "Right Round", because I just felt like singing the new version of it.. LOL DIRTY. But that was basically my night. I came to the party dressed up as a nerd. :) BEST COSTUME... Found the clothes at Salvation Army, and I was quite happy... Oh! Also found a real Varsity Jacket there.. from Beaverton High School #22 Basketball. Amazing finds. :) Well! Gotta gooooo... crew I took this photo out my studio window on N. 6th St. in Williamsburg. I'd seen this group of kids around the neighborhood, and it just tickled me that the 80's ironic fashion aesthetic had penetrated to the hip-hop realm. These kids are fo real. I saw them trying to get a group shot with their camera sitting on the curb. Ultimately, a friendly dude walking past offered to get the shot for them. I'm zoomed in from my surreptitious vantage -across the street, 2nd floor with a junky digicam. Spanish Doll Daguerreotype This is my newest acquisition out of Spain. 1/6th plate daguerreotype of a sweet little girl in her off shoulder dress holding her china head doll. The dress is actually tinted peach and the dolls dress is tinted lilac. Image came in a full case and has old paper seals. The image dates from the early 1850's by the style of the mat. She looks very proud to be holding her doll and did not move a bit which is somewhat rare in children daguerreotypes. Children from Barcelona Cabinet card. They may well be the children of the lady in the next photo as I bought them together and see a resemblance. "Available At All Leading Stores" An installation view from the Trienal Poli/Grafica de San Juan: America Latina y el Caribe. Notes on “FEAR” By CHRISTOPHER COZIER 18 April, 2006 New on the Market: I was thinking about “FEAR”. Has it now replaced ethnic identity as a new political (even national) commodity? In its current 10-oz. packets, it can easily be distributed for consumption. 28 June, 2006 “Available at all leading stores!” Curator Andrea Fatona calls from Toronto . . . she has seen another of my graphic works on my blog. In this work, I am speculating about “fear” as a new political commodity. People in Trinidad are supposed to be living in fear, so we need a new government or new security measures to save us. They also say we need a renewal of moral and religious values! I keep asking myself who is selling this and why? As usual, someone told me that the work looked foreign and that there was nothing distinctively Trinidadian about it … they said it looked . The way I see it, these local concerns place me in a larger, less anxious and competitive domain, in which a kind of empathy can take shape between myself and others in other countries and cultures who are facing similar challenges and manipulations in the fast-expanding global economy and social order. Maybe on islands people look inward and outward simultaneously. So the curator and I begin to collaborate. We are imagining how this work will fit in to or shape her idea, and if she can take the responsibility to make aesthetic choices in the implementation and placement of the work in the space and context. I decided that a simple rubber stamp made at an office store would do. This means that people entering the exhibition could make the stamp themselves on the little cardboard boxes. To me this is exciting. It occurred to me that this is a collaboration not just between myself and the person that enters the show and gets to stamp the “fear” label on a box and take it home, but also with Andrea. She gets to actually choose the boxes and order the stamp and have a say in how it will work. The work enables a number of participants, and I am more of an instigator than a sole maker “artist-man” in the old-fashioned sense. In the early 90s the term “marketable historical injury” kept coming up in my speculations about the use of identity. It was my final departure (hopefully/optimistically) from the territorial prospects (but designations) of multicultural politics, and particularly the reductivist political commodification of self and sensibility within local electoral politics, and the lucrative postures of newspaper columnists. The seed of further distrust and by extension the marketability of fear and insecurity were coming on stream. Early 2009, in responding to a question from Julieta Gonzalez I am still imagining other commodities like this one, even though the thoughts came up about four years ago…. Initially it came to me while I was watching regional media coverage and election campaigns that were brokering fear rather than offering the kind of leadership or vision that would allow us to confront it. As I thought about it more, it could also have implications about the post-9/11 world and broader global realities, and about the way we watch CNN and BBC etc living in places like Trinidad … the way a confusion sets in about who these broadcasts are aimed at, about who is actually living within a certain political expectation, economy and access and who is not…. I started as a designer, and I always associate design work with a more direct communication with a possible public. Some of my earlier design work was placed anonymously in public places. I still appreciate the dissemination, accessibility, and the direct communication. I live in a location in which there is no critical or financial embrace for what I do, so I cannot depend on magazines and institutional structures to position or convey my ideas. So the Internet and design strategies have become even more important. There is also an economy thing, in that the objects themselves are not precious. I can plan and imagine them, they can be made industrially or by others, and one rarely has to ship and insure anything. Their value is in their conceptual intent, and in the moment that a viewer encounters the work and enters the head-space it initiates. I work for that moment. Some of these notes were previously published in Small Axe 23, June 2007 Traditional Store Most-certainly the right choice for Old Fashioned Boilings? This relic of a different age is to be found in Portobello's Bath Street. Admittedly Hamilton's is a bit musty inside but nontheless compelling to visit. Your Move... (012/365) It's way too late to be doing this... And, I'm drunk. The benefit was tonight. It was fun! But, definitely not what I was expecting. Picture a warehouse, all decked out in white, with contrasting themes of fire and ice. Half naked, painted models, selling raffle tickets for fantastically expensive gift baskets, liquor being poured through ornately carved ice sculptures, and a conglomeration of rich gays, dressed to the nines in their most expensive casual outfits (for, don't forget, this is south Florida). I milled about, had my two free cocktails, picked at the finger food, and stalked the area where people could bid on my piece. I met some of my boss' friends, and their friends, but after a while, I realized I was bored. And no one was bidding on my photo. It was right after the belly-dancer with the flaming sword balanced on her head decided she was going to climb a giant piece of fabric to a ring suspended from the warehouse ceiling, and begin spinning wildly around, that I realized, the reason I was bored was because everyone here KNEW EACH OTHER! I was in a room full of gay men that had been traveling in the same circle for the past umpteen years. A class of elite homos, all between the ages of 35-60, that have seen each other out, rubbed elbows, swapped hand jobs, and generally gotten comfortable with the repetitiveness of each others presence. I knew no one. And was in the age minority. I looked around me, to all the other mid-twenty-year-olds, each attached to their respective sugar daddy, and realized they too were equally lost...alcohol their only salvation. I'd ran out of drink tickets..... And drinks were expensive..... And I didn't come with a sugar daddy..... Plus, no one was bidding on my photo. Two bids by the time I left..... I don't want to talk about it. Hence the reason I'm drunk. I dove into the beer when I got home. And here it is, almost 3am, and I can't believe I even had it in me to take a 365day shot, much less fuck with it, post it, and write....well, whatever the hell I just wrote.... Yeah..... I'ma fuck this 365 thing up.... meander I love the American West. My love of the west came relatively late in life. Even though I was raised in a family of travelers..check that…a family hooked on road trips, all of our travels were east of the Mississippi. We traveled all over the south and in particular Florida. To this day, the middle Keys in Florida still own my heart. It wasn’t until I took a job that sent me to southern California for training that I crossed over the plains and into the west. I was 38 years old at the time. Since that time I have gone back several times for vacations and business. As a boy raised in the Great Lakes region I find myself damn near frozen by the western sky and the vistas. Once, while driving along U.S. 6 in Utah, I encountered a stretch of open road. I dropped out of a small cropping of mountains into a desert salt flat. On the horizon was another cropping of mountains. The scale was incredible. I stopped the car to take it all in. Getting back in the car I began wonder about the distance of the horizon. I set the trip odometer to zero and hit the gas on that long flat road. When I reached the other side the odometer read 45 miles. Along the way I had old Waylon playing on the CD player. Waylon wistfully sang Dee Moeller’s words: “The land where I travel once fashion with beauty now stands with scars on her face The wide open spaces are closing in quickly from the ways of the whole human race And it's not that I blame them for claiming her bounty I just wish they're takin' it slow Cause where has a slow movin' once quick draw outlaw got to go Where has a slow movin' once quick draw outlaw got to go”- Dee Moeller Related topics: buy japanese street fashion popular fashion websites fashion jewellery brands bangalore fashion week models disco fashion photos shoes fashion show awesome fashion games for girls east fashion store california fashion stores |

Native dress fashion More from my postcard and blank greeting cards series of images I've shot over the past few years at various events. I must share the story of why these photos mean so much to me. When I was 10, my mom decided to move us from San Francisco to Oklahoma. This was a huge change for me in many ways. But the trip was so memorable. I remember stopping in Arizona and New Mexico. Back then, 1972, there were many of the roadside tourist attractions. At one place I got a jar of polished rocks. Still have some of them. Another some Apache Tears and then a beaded necklace. It was handcrafted. I still have it! After we had been in Oklahoma for awhile, oh less than six months, we saw a traditional ceremony where I caught my first glimpse into a life I had only read and looked at on the pages of a huge book my mom had. There were the most fabulous beaded and feathered outfits ever and the dances were wonderful. That has stayed with me throughout the years. I have great admiration and respect for other cultures. My mom was part Cherokee and I didn't understand it until the move to Oklahoma. Now years later, I continue to find great pleasure in admiring the many hours of talent and work that each item takes. ©Toni Hopper Photography All rights reserved Ben Stiller Photos 8 Ben Stiller born in New York City 30 November 1965.He is hollywood actor, comedian, director, producer and writer. He appear in first film "Empire of the sun" in 1987.He work as a director in "Elvis Stories" in 1989.From "The Ben Stiller Show" he won Emmy Award for good wriring.
