Pretty research I recently started researching a new article on Satie and Dada. Having been seriously out of the loop for a very long time though, and remembering how I could never ever find anything in my notes when I used to do this sort of thing regularly, I decided that I would make my notes pretty as I went along - with proper illustrated title pages for each new book I took down notes from, little doodly sketches in the margins to help me identify possibly key thoughts and quotes and so on. This diagram is one I drew up to help me keep track of where various key figures were at what time in the development of Dada, and also to make clear the separation between Berlin and Paris Dada in particular. The brown dotted lines show pre-war/pre-Dada travel. Other coloured arrows show travel between the various Dada centres: New York, Zurich, Berlin and Paris. UNHCR Q&A: An Australian artist delighted to use her work to help refugees BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, December 2 (UNHCR) – Even though she was busy preparing for a big opening in a Los Angeles gallery, Edwina White jumped at the chance of designing New Year's cards for UNHCR's office in Argentina. The New York-based Australian artist created six cards featuring stylish images of women and celebration. The cards have gone on sale in bookshops around Argentina and funds raised will be used to support programmes to help vulnerable refugee women, including those who have been resettled in Argentina. White talked about refugees and her work during a meeting with UNHCR Public Information Officer Carolina Podesta. Excerpts from the interview: Why did you decide to help UNHCR? I was delighted to be asked. Sometimes I don't feel very useful, making art in silence. And then there's this. Please describe your work and tell us what inspires you. It's playful and approachable and inspired by human odyssey. It looks old, because the paper is old; pages found from old books and publications. And I use very basic materials – pencils and ink and tea and collage elements – which are invested in multiple meanings for people. A friend of mine calls it visual haiku. Funds raised from sales of the cards will be used to help 'women at risk.' Does this issue have special meaning for you? I think all women have some sort of understanding between each other. I was told once that women are born with a sense of honour and they are constantly reminded to retain that. I think there is that extra consciousness that is shared. One of your pictures, which is not part of this set, is entitled 'Refugee.' Tell us a bit more about it. It's a crouched, barefoot woman in an oversized man's blazer, making her look like a bird. There's a city on fire in her smoky hair. The thinking is that we are each our home and that, if circumstances are difficult, we need to fly. To leave things behind. Did you know any refugees? Only friends who were adopted as refugees. They are unsure of their roots, which makes them especially curious beings – ever searching. I don't live in my home country, but that is my choice and I am most welcome and encouraged to return any time. Most of my friends in New York are from somewhere else. It connects us. We form essential familial relationships. Some of them cannot go home. I am lucky. Do you think art can help refugees and, if so, how? For self expression, absolutely. To expand language and comprehension, to communicate most deeply. And creative solutions to issues should be encouraged. What do you think of Australian policy on immigration and asylum? Basically Australia has plenty of room, but not much water to go around. The concentration of people is coastal. The government is notoriously unsure as to what to do with immigrants. There are some very crowded detention centres, perhaps to discourage people. They are most likely to be already suffering a great deal. I cannot see the point of discouraging people who may well contribute to make your country truly great. The Mission On the back of this water bottle it said, "Our Mission We began with a simple idea: "Let's create a bottled water to help children around the world get clean water." We felt compelled to make a difference, because more than 1 billion people lack clean water access, and the problem affects children most. Ethos Water donates 5 cents for every bottle sold toward humanitarian water programs. Our current goal is to invest $10 million in these programs by 2010. Already, we're helping children and their communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Thank you for joining us in our efforts. Bilderberg participant James Wolfensohn James David Wolfensohn AO KBE FKC (born 1 December 1933) was the ninth president of the World Bank Group. In 1980, he became a naturalized citizen of the United States, after it was rumored that he was a candidate to succeed Robert McNamara as president of the World Bank. After he was unsuccessful in this pursuit, he established his own investment firm, James D. Wolfensohn, Inc., along with partners including Paul A. Volcker. Upon accepting his nomination to serve as president of the World Bank in 1995, Wolfensohn divested of his ownership interest in James D. Wolfensohn, Inc. The firm was later bought by Bankers Trust. Since 2006, Wolfensohn has also been the chairman of the International Advisory Board of Citigroup. Victor Mature 1913 - 1999 VICTOR MATURE was once billed by his studio as "a beautiful hunk of man" and in the Forties he came to personify the latest term signifying male sex-appeal - beefcake. His craggy features, with their full lips and heavily lidded eyes were more controversial - women either loved them or loathed them - and in one of his films, Wabash Avenue, the heroine Betty Grable actually calls him "fishface". But his physique made him a perfect Samson and hero of biblical epics such as The Robe. He never professed to be a great actor, and stated in 1968, "Actually, I am a golfer. I never was an actor; ask anybody, particularly the critics." The son of an Austrian scissors-grinder and a Frenchwoman, Mature was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1913, and was a rebellious youth, thrown out of four schools. At 15 he took his first job, as a candy salesman, and aged 20 decided to try his luck in Hollywood. To gain experience he became a student actor at the Pasadena Playhouse. After appearing in over 60 plays he was given a leading role on stage in Ben Hecht's To Quito and Back, in which he was seen by the producer Hal Roach, who was looking for an actor with the physique to play a prehistoric man in One Million BC (1940). Roach first gave him a small role as a gangster in the black comedy The Housekeeper's Daughter (1939) before starring him with Carole Landis in the caveman saga in which the pair battled gigantic reptiles. After two more films, Mature took a role on Broadway as one of the men in the life of a fashion magazine editor (Gertrude Lawrence) in the hit musical Lady in the Dark (1941). He was described in the show as "the most beautiful hunk of man you ever saw in your life", and his performance brought him a contract with 20th Century-Fox. After playing opposite Betty Grable in Bruce Humberstone's entertaining mystery I Wake Up Screaming (1941), he was loaned to United Artists to portray the Arab lover of a gambling den-owner, Madame Gin Sling, in Joseph von Sternberg's heavily sanitised version of the stage drama The Shanghai Gesture (1941). He then made four musicals, all released in 1942: Song of the Islands and Footlight Serenade, both with Grable, Seven Days Leave, with Lucille Ball, and My Gal Sal, with Rita Hayworth. (In both this film and Song of the Islands Mature's singing voice was dubbed.) In all four films, he played cocky, self-confident heroes, but the actor displayed throughout his career an engaging degree of self-deprecating humour. "Directors and actors who make films with one eye cocked on the Academy Award dismiss me as ham, uncured and uncurable," he once said, "and scripters find it hard to resist the temptation to take a poke at me by writing cute little scenes in which I am supposed to cavort as a strong boy of sorts. But don't get me wrong. I picked this racket and I love it." Later he would delight in telling of his attempt to join a country club that did not permit actors. "I told them, `Hell, I'm no actor and I've got 28 pictures and a scrapbook of reviews to prove it.' " With America's entry into the Second World War, Mature served 14 months of active duty prior to being cast in the service revue Tars and Spars. He returned to the screen as the tubercular "Doc" Holliday in John Ford's great western My Darling Clementine (1946) and received some of the best reviews of his career. The critic Richard Griffith wrote, Mature is hardly an obvious choice for the role of a tubercular gunman concealing under silken menace his despair at the loss of a Boston medical career. But the performance comes off amazingly. Mr Mature's face is a basilisk, his eyes look inward; in detail of manner and appearance he successfully suggests the desperate remittance-man. Henry Hathaway's Kiss Of Death (1947) starred Mature as a thief who collaborates with the police in order to get out of prison. Time magazine said, "Mature apparently needed nothing all this time but the right kind of role." Robert Siodmak's Cry of the City (1948) was another fine thriller in which Mature was a cop who has to hunt down his former childhood friend. The following year Mature had his best remembered role in Cecil B. DeMille's spectacular Samson and Delilah (1949). Mature later described his co-star Hedy Lamarr as "not exactly a ball of fire - she just seemed to be loping along". The film was an enormous hit though critically dismissed, Groucho Marx famously quipping, "I don't like any movie where the leading man's chest is bigger than the leading lady's." Mature had one major disagreement with his director: DeMille came up to me and said, "Victor my boy, we're ready to do the scene where you fight the lion. We have a real lion, but he's very tame, a sweet old lion. His name is Jackie. When you fight him, I'd like you to put your head in his mouth. Now don't worry - Jackie has no teeth." Our wants will never be enough Finally got all the info to do the rest of my FIT application which includes several short answer questions, an essay, and portfolio of 6 places, 6 things, 6 people, and 6 photos which "describe a person or thing". Obviously I failed at it last time since I was rejected once, and I'm sure I will be again. This one is probably going to go in the 6 photos describing me- different emotions. Even though I do like this photo, I'm sure it's not good enough for the fashion institute. There are some photos I was really proud of but looking at them now knowing they are going to be reviewed for FIT I pretty much think "this is not worthy of even being online" to every one :( Nothing matters, pride will shatter Our wants will never be enough Because nothing matters but love The things I chase, the status I crave Its nothing- its nothing We invest with the bankers, but not in the maker. And I am the culprit, I am no saint, how long will I stand here obstructing love's way... -Nothing Matters by The Rocket Summer ^ 6 days til I see my favorite singer for the thirteenth time! :) 62/365 is this not the cutest sewing machine ever? omg, so cute!! i just ordered this from target online. it's not available in stores.. it got tons of 5 star reviews, so i thought it would give it a try. it's so adorable i couldn't resist! :o) my old white 70s machine, isn't working out too well. i had a sewing lesson yesterday. and it was working "ok" but today i can't figure out how to thread the machine and it kept getting jammed. my sisnlaw's mother was teaching me how to use the machine and she got so frustrated, i just knew i would have a hard time! she used to sew for a living too.. so anyway, i figured i would be pulling my hair out and should just invest in a nice machine. if this one ends up being too cute for it's own good and not a good working machine, i can always take it back. they had a less expensive one, but this one does all kinds of funky stitches. i should get it by the first of the month. i'll post pics when i do! yay! CBIA helps retrain workers for high-demand manufacturing jobs Ten recently laid-off workers completed a unique program that teaches them new skills to help them land high-demand jobs in manufacturing. The Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA), the Manufacturing Alliance Service Corp. (MASC), Waterbury Adult Education, and the Northwest Workforce Investment Board (NW-WIB) sponsored the program for dislocated workers. The 13-week program focused on shop essentials, math, and blueprint reading, along with hands-on CNC precision machine skills training, and lean manufacturing processes.
