North America: The Historical Geography of a Changing Continent

North America: The Historical Geography of a Changing Continent

This classic text retains the superb scholarship of the first edition in a thoroughly revised and accessibly written new edition. With both new and updated essays by distinguished American and Canadian authors, the book provides a comprehensive historical overview of the formation and growth of North American regions from European exploration and colonization to the second half of the twentieth century. Collectively the contributors explore the key themes of acquisition of geographical knowledge, cultural transfer and acculturation, frontier expansion, spatial organization of society, resource exploitation, regional and national integration, and landscape change. With six new chapters, redrawn maps, a new introduction that explores scholarly trends in historical geography since publication of the first edition, and a new final chapter guiding students to the basic sources for historical geographic enquiry, North America will be an indispensable text in historical geography courses.

A less agressive processing of my previous attempt on this object.

The North America Nebula (NGC 7000 or Caldwell 20) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. The remarkable shape of the emission nebula It is sometimes wrongly called the "North American" nebula.

with its reddish color (from the hydrogen H? emission line), its shape resembles that of the continent of North America, complete with a prominent Gulf of Mexico, which only show up in photographs of the area. The distance of the nebula complex is not precisely known, nor is the star responsible for ionizing the hydrogen so that it emits light. If the star inducing the ionization is Deneb, as some sources say, the nebula complex would be about 1800 light years distance.

Taken from Cherrymount, Waterford, Ireland. Using a modded Canon 350D c/w Astronomik CLS filter, connected to a William Optics Megrez 90, piggybacked on a Celestron 11 inch SCT on a CGE Mount. A stack of 120 x 60 Second Shots, imaged on the 25th May 2009.

Clear skies on the last night of the international sea cliff climbing meet meant a good view of the East and a chance to catch some early season subs around Cygnus. I only got a mixture of exposures as the dew was really problematic...however, fogging the lens was nothing to the effect it'd have on the rock in the Great Zawn the following day...

Approx 20mins of exposures between 1 and 5 minutes and 800-3200 ISO.
