Meals on Wheels
Bruce Dupre and Doris Svec are both recipients of Meals on Wheels, a program designed to provide nutrition to the home bound in Southeastern Connecticut. The program provides over 57,000 home-cooked meals for seniors along the Shoreline. One rainy day, about two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to interview a couple elders, volunteers and directors about the program for the hyper-local publication at which I work.
I took portraits of Bruce and Doris in their element during the project, mostly for myself. There’s something intriguing about old age; a history in a face full of wrinkles. A majority of my Italian-immigrated family is getting old. Things begin to change, bringing about the next generation of familial liveliness. Can’t really put my finger on what’s so fascinating – I think that’s because I’m not there yet and won’t be for some time.
Sarasota - Meals On Wheels

I have driven for Meals on Wheels for about 13 years (2010). Normally I drive once a week. There are 29 routes in Sarasota. We distribute about 600 meals every day except Sundays, including all holidays (even Christmas). The operation is funded entirely from donations, with no government money at any level. About two-thirds of recipients do not pay for their meals.

Baby Einstein Cake
This cake was inspired by the Wilton Amazing Amazon Cake and that design was improved upon by Sweet Things Toronto. Baker's Cakes translated it into the Baby Einstein Characters! The bottom layer is lemon cake filled with lemon curd and topped with lemon buttercream. The top layer is buttermilk cake frosted with vanilla buttercream. The figures are made out of gum paste.

Steamroller Build
Actually, I bought this as a complete bike february 2008. What remains of the original parts is the Sugino RD2 crankset, the front brake, the seatpost and the three headtube spacers.
Surly nowadays spec their complete steamrollers with another crankset, "Andel" (which I strongly suspect is cheaper), and yet retail them at a price about 100 € above the price of the 2008 models.

Here's another of the very few watercooled front-engined cars at the Terryville show. This is a 1988 Volkswagen Golf, the second-generation model. When first introduced in Europe in the fall of 1983, it was a hit from the first day of sale. By the middle of the decade, two out of every three Volkswagens sold worldwide were Golfs, despite VW having four other models. In North America, though, it was a modest seller at best, where the few VW customers left in the eighties - it was not a very good decade for VW in the U.S. and Canada - preferred the Jetta.
This 1988 model likely would have been one of the last Volkswagens built at the U.S. plant in New Stanton, Pennsylvania, before that factory closed in July of that year. It's a fine specimen, with its cool aftermarket wheels.

What is a Seamless Texture / Pattern?
A seamless texture is an special image, where one side of a image exactly matches the opposite side, so that the edges blend into each other when repeated. Seamless textures are used for desktop wallpaper, webpage backgrounds, video games, Photoshop fills and in 3D rendering programs.
How did you make it?
This texture was made using software specially designed to aid in seamless texture creation. Some of the programs I’ve use are Photoshop, Illustrator, Filter Forge, Genetica, Image Synth, Alien Skin, Topaz Labs, Imagelys, and even a pen and paper.

Rockland Lake Remnant
Rockland Lake Park in Rockland County was once the location of a small hamlet of the same name. Most of the land was taken by the state for a park in 1958. Most of the town is gone, but traces remain. I found this old foundation.
Former Rockland county Alms House
Rockland County Community College was built on the site of the county's "Poor Farm". The alms house became the first building of the college and is now Brucker Hall.

One of last nights star trail shots over at Hadleigh Castle in Essex. I had several missed opportunities in the past week where I couldn't get out to take advantage of clear skys so last night I dropped my friend Russ a quick text to see if he fancied sitting in a damp field for a couple of hours and surprisingly he said "yes.....sounds like fun". We arrived at 10.30pm, greeted by cloudy skys :( Luckily these cleared away quite quickly. We were joined briefly by some yoofs who painted a bit of their own light into the image. I don't think they realised we were there as shortly after I'd fired up the floodlight they disappeared.
The light was provided by a remote area lighting product, borrowed from the office, which was a past design job for one of our clients.....and it was bloody awesome. It's LED based so it provided some nice blue light - it was switched on for a few seconds in one of the exposures to paint some light onto the brickwork.
With my previous attempts in the garden I hadn't encountered the problems of condensation on the lens. About halfway through the 50mins shot time the lens started to fog up, obscuring the castle. Luckily the trails still shone through (but gradually fade out). I think this actually adds quite a nice (accidental) effect.
I somehow managed to capture Russ motionless in one of the 30 sec exposures so I kept him in the composition......I think he adds something good to the image, silhouetted on the horizon. I had wanted to include the north star in the shot but I couldn't get round to the right spot - the hill that the castle stands on dropped away rapidly fairly close to where I was standing.
After a few hours in the cold & damp I had quite a few shots to work with so at 1.10am, several coffees down and a flat camera battery we headed for home.

WHAT AN OUTSTANDING TRAIL. This is the PCT as it starts to drop down off the high point on the high route across Old Snowy Mountain. The large majority of backpackers take the low route across the top of the Packwood Glacier (it is 1/2 mile shorter and 500 feet less elevation gain) BUT for the views and the experience - - the high route is the BEST route. OMT
September 7th & 8th, 2008:
This trip consisted of a short backpacking trip (four miles) up to the intersection of trails: 96 & 86 (from the Snowgrass flats trailhead) into the Goat Rocks Wilderness. Near the trail intersection I set up my tent to use as a "base camp" for two nice day hikes on Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.
The first "day hike" from my tent site, was up to Goat Lake and the ribbon water falls of Goat Creek. This is a short easy hike through meadows of wildflowers and whistling marmot. Because of the late snow pack in the Cascade Mountains this year (2008), many of the wildflowers bloomed late and lupine still flourish. The harbinger of fall, the mountain bog gentian are showing up in bloom now.
Though clear skies prevailed, a really strong gusting wind storm rattled my tent late Sunday night.
The second day hike started Monday morning at 7:30 am when I left my tent site with a day pack. I hiked up trail 96 to the Pacific Crest Trail. At the PCT I hiked north and up over the high route of the Pacific Crest Trail, up over Old Snowy Mountain. I hiked north up and down the spine of the ridge until I was just above Elk Pass.
I returned back to my tent in the afternoon, following the low route across the west face of Old Snowy Mountain, that passes just above the Packwood Glacier.
The weather was perfect; the mosquitoes were few; the camp fire soul soothing; and you can't beat the scenery, exercise, and fresh mountain air.

Prize Wheel at The Bear Mill is pretty lame!
We recently went to a child's birthday party at The Bear Mill/Pickle Bob's Ice Cream & Treatery. The birthday kid got to spin this Prize Wheel once, to win a fun prize. I took a picture because some of the prizes were awfully lame.
Examples of lame prizes:
10% off 1 Plush Animal -- WTF? Why would any kid like to get this? Sure, their parents would feel somewhat obligated to purchase a stuffed animal, but a kid doesn't need a wheel to guilt their parents into buying a toy at a place like this. A 10% off isn't a fun prize for a kid, and it's so insignificant it's hardly a fun prize for their parents.
Buy 1 Get 1 Free Ice Cream -- If a kid is having a birthday party at this place, they're already getting ice cream. If the ice cream is good, it might be a nice prize for the parents, but really I'd expect this type of coupon in the mail, not on a happy fun birthday prize wheel. There are two of these spaces on the wheel. Yay!
50% off Any (1) Clothing Set -- again, coupons are stupid prizes for birthday kids. Send them in the Val-Pak, instead, please!
50% Off 1 Plush Animal -- okay, this is a better coupon than the 10% off one, but still. Give the kid a damn stuffed animal, don't give them a percent-off coupon!
10% Off Any Plush -- oof, here we go again..
Free Spin -- I wonder what happens when you land on this. Do you just get to spin it again? If so, what's the point? These spaces should offer free stuff instead of a Free Spin. At least that would increase the odds of winning a free prize from 50% to 61% (still super-lame, though! should be 100%). There are two of these spaces on the wheel.
The rest of the spaces are actually fun for kids. Free stuff, or pointers to spaces with free stuff. See, that wasn't so hard, was it?
Anyways, the wheel is a nice idea, but the implementation (as well as the quality of the construction) leaves a lot to be desired. With each spin, there's only a 50% chance of winning free stuff. Lame!

I thought the hunt for MP Rodimus Prime would be similar to what I experienced back in 2007 when I desperately searched for the Walmart-exclusive MP Starscream. Initially, it looked to be that way as this figure was scarcely available in Toys R Us retail stores in my area.
Now I wonder if the Takara-Tomy MP-10 (Convoy 2.0) will be re-released by Hasbro in the future? Hasbro never released the MP-7 Thundercracker but we saw MP-8 Grimlock released last year.
I think I'll skip getting MP-10 just solely because of the high-price...
