While most of the entire building was taken up by Nextel network equipment, there is also a space for the 4G network equipment, although all of the 4G backhaul equipment for this cell site is contained in these two gray cabinets.

Basically, as the wireless industry has advanced, each generation of wireless network equipment takes up dramatically less space. The equipment also uses substantially less energy.

The space taken up by the Sprint 3G equipment is about half of what Nextel's 2G equipment use. The 4G equipment uses half the space of the 3G equipment.

So basically, every time you add a G (generation), you cut your space in half.
