slow down
Sort of fit my mood today. Everything is moving too quickly, everyone wants to move too quickly. We're missing all the finest details that float around in the spaces around us begging to be noticed and appreciated. In this area, I'm not surprised if more people die on the road than anywhere else. Over the past year, one of the professors in the Scandinavian department got hit by a car while cycling home. But he's fine now, or at least I hear he's teaching again. I've actually considered owning a bike to cycle to school, but I suppose driving would suffice (I get my exercise else where, you see). Anyway, people here don't really look when they're driving, but it's not just the drivers though, it's the pedestrians too! I mean, some drivers don't look where they're driving, many don't even signal, which is really bizarre. I find myself getting frustrated a lot driving in the area. Berkeley is the worst place I've ever driven in, pedestrians could be blind and it wouldn't change anything. People would cross the roads without even looking…even when they're not supposed to be crossing. If it were London, half the population of Berkeley would have died in a car accident.
About the picture: I've been driving by it for the past year and have always wanted to stop by to take a picture, but since I'd only drive by it while rushing to the gym, it was never done, until one fine day I decided to stop by the area after school while the sun was still up, and it turned out better than I expected =) I like how it looks solemn, not very colourful, but enough colours to portray what it has to.
An advice for people: slow down, take a look around. You might notice something new that has always been there. And perhaps, something new to appreciate.

So, after the earthquake, I decided to ride home to make sure the house and the dog were both ok. Mainly, that one hadn't shit all over the other.
On the way home, a car basically rushed into the median area at the bike crosswalk at Sunset Hills/W&OD. My friend Derek was almost struck by the truck pictured here.
This was one of the most disappointing interactions I've ever had with another human. Derek composed himself as a true fucking gentlemen, even after being threatened, then physically assaulted (literally!).
Big thanks to the Fairfax county officers who showed up to help out. And a big _fuck you_ to the driver, who acted like an angry, entitled, immature fool.
We share this place. There are laws that we all must follow. But there are also courtesies and kindnesses that we pay each other, on the best and the worst of days. The driver of this green truck knows nothing of these things, and I pity him for it.

new helmet, temporary lighting setup
Trustfire TR-801 (Cree XR-E emitter) on a handy velcro-and-rubber temporary mount, as well as the velcro-mounted front (amber) blinkie and CycleAware rear-view mirror. The latter seems to be sticking much better than the original did; I sanded the surface slightly (and cleaned it very carefully) before mounting the mirror.
crash damage: helmet
I don't recall any particular impact on the helmet, and other than the mirror mount, there was no obvious damage. But clearly there was some sort of impact, so my working assumption is that the helmet is internally damaged and unsafe for further use. :-(

Chinese Truck
The city of Zhongdian, or now known as Shnagri La. This a small Chinese city around 150 miles from Tibet, on a plateau at an elevation of around 10,000ft. The people are predominantly ethinc Tibetan, although there is also a mix of Han and Naxi people.
This guy seems happy enough to carry both a sofa AND a bed on the back of his bike. Most Americans would call this one trip justification for Silverado. China 2008

This curious metal wind-up rendition of a duck riding on a tricycle has a small silver label on the back. "For collectors, not for children" is the message. A wind-up key on the side revs up the 8-inch tall duck to travel in circles pedaling his tricycle while his three-winged helicopter hat spins around. All painted metal with the exception of rubber tricycle wheels; there are many possibly sharp edges that could cut little fingers. Strobe 430 EX eTTL +1.5 and bounced off ceiling with "cloud" Lightsphere. This is as close as I get to "on camera" light these days and the only time I don't shoot in manual flash mode. It's much easier to chase her around and let the camera brain work it out! I'm considering buying a hot shoe extension cable to get it off camera and into my out streched left hand. Spin
I have a great idea for one of my self portraits, but I am still a bit under the weather to actually go out and execute it. So I thought I'd try the already done spinning picture. I do have to admit, I wasn't in a very good mood before doing this shot, but this was a lot of fun! I felt like a child again, spinning in the chair (even though it gave me a bit of a headache!)
This is my day 100 of my Photo a Day project. I am really proud of myself! I now truly believe that I can make it all the way through the year.

Upper Valley Takes Action
Against Global Warming

More than a dozen Upper Valley groups are joining an effort tomorrow
to raise awareness and energize millions of people worldwide in the
fight against global warming.
Upper Valley residents are joining others in all 50 states and 188
countries across the globe for work party events with activities
ranging from planting trees and raspberries, fixing bicycles, saving
energy, weatherizing houses and more. And there will be an equal
emphasis on the “party” as well as the “work” to get people actively
involved in preventing global warming, said Barbara Duncan, who heads
the Catamount Earth Institute, a community environmental action and
educational group.
“This is inspired by (author) Bill McKibben's 350 organization that is
designed to get people out doing something about climate change,
rather than just going to a rally in Washington, D.C.,” Duncan said.
Earlier this week, 6,848 events had been planned globally, and the
number was growing, according to the website 350.org.
Today, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sharon will be holding a farmers market
and planting trees on the grounds of Sharon Elementary School. There
also will be weeding, mulching, the building of a solar oven for
classroom use and writing postcards to elected officials seeking
action on global warning.
Here's some of what is going on tomorrow in the Upper Valley:
* As part of its eighth annual Pumpkin Festival, Cedar Circle Farm in
Thetford will hold a “bike-in” that includes bike check-ups and simple
repairs.
There also will be demonstrations of a bicycle-powered bean thrasher
and winter vegetable storage, as well as tours of the farm and of a
waste-recovery station.
There's free admission to the festival if you bike, walk or take The
White River Flyer train from White River Junction to the farm. The
event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 802-785-4737.
* Tunbridge is celebrating the Global Workday with events beginning at
1 p.m. and ending with a concert featuring Sarah Lee Guthrie and
Johnny Irion to benefit the Tunbridge Community Sustainability Fund.
From 1 to 3 p.m., there's a working tour of the town forest to
eradicate invasive species.
The Grease Van (powered by waste vegetable oil) will take attendees
from 3 to 5 p.m. to area sites and residences that are actively using
or planning to use such renewable power as solar, wind, microhydro
power and others. A sustainability panel discussion and potluck dinner
will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The concert begins at 7:30. All the
events are held at the Town Hall and are free except the concert,
which is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Call 802-431-3433.
* At noon, Transition Town Hartland is sponsoring a bike clinic, an
art show called Que Sera Hartland? at the Hartland Library, a wood-
fired pizza oven, a one-day 350-points meditation wheel and the
planting of 350 daffodils at the library. There's no admission charge.

* “The Raspberry Revolution” is taking place in White River Junction.
The event includes raspberry planting on South and North Main streets
from 1 to 5 p.m.; a community-wide celebration at Lyman Point Park
from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with music, food, presentations and games and
from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m., the Revolution Fashion Show at the Tip Top
Cafe.
* VINS Nature Center in Quechee is holding a tree planting at 2:20 p.m.
* Smooth Power, an event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the green in
Woodstock, will include interactive activities for all ages to help
raise awareness and collaboration and engage people to work together
while having fun.
* COVER is sponsoring a home repair workday to help needy homeowners
in the Claremont area from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch, materials, safety
gear and tools are provided. No prior experience is required. Call
802-296-7241, ext. 104.
* The Thetford Energy Committee is sponsoring a day-long event to
complete 350 energy saving activities. The purpose of the project is
to teach children basic energy efficiency and resource-saving
activities that can save energy at home and reduce carbon emissions.
* The Lyme Energy Committee is holding an expo on the town green from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. recognizing energy savings realized by using local
businesses and working from home.
* There are free discussions, workshops and demonstrations titled
“Creating a Green Community: How Do We Do It?” at the White River
Craft Center at t

Woke up today to finish up yesterday's 365 photo and edited some long overdue photos. I waited until two of my friends came and we got our bikes and biked around. We found shelter near a store when it started pouring and my parents came out so we can enroll me in some driving lessons. My dad actually got a discount because he started chatting with the lady that worked there and they found out they lived near each other in China. some crazy coincidence huh? We biked around some more after that and I got a new back wheel. Everyone then went home and I had dinner with the family. I went out again after that to meet up with Bryan so I can get his spoke wrench. So now here I am still editing the photos that I took in Canada about a month ago haha

Hoima Bicycle
This documentary shows the process of designing a bicycle for and with Ugandan bicycle couriers, known as Boda-boda. Filmed primarily in Uganda, it shows the realities of current day East Africa, from the chaotic streets of Kampala to the inside of gritty mud-thatched homes in rural Hoima. In Uganda many residents use cheap, clunky bicycles for their primary means of transportation. Through a unique collaboration between an American designer and Ugandan couriers, a new bicycle design was conceived and a prototype was made. The designer then traveled to Uganda to meet the couriers and to have the bike tested and critiqued. Would they like it? Or is it back to the drawing board? Miele Montain Bicycle converted to Cyclo-cross = 24 Gears
This is my 20+ years old Miele mountain bicycle I converted to drop bars with Ultegra 8 gear bar-end shifters.
It has 1.25 inch slick tires and is ideal for commuting, riding rail-trails or packed gravel roads. It's also a fantastic touring bike when the racks are on it.

As one might expect from former members of Giant Sand and Friends of Dean Martinez, this one is another sun-dried tomato. With vocals murmuring just below hearing level and guitars pushing and shoving between a lonesome, distant twang and a sleepy strum as on "Sanchez," the music feels like a soundtrack from a hippie western where the hero survives banishment in the desert by eating peyote buttons. Like the Dean Martinez hombres, Calexico draws upon a choice array of exotic instrumentation (accordion, mandolin, violin, vibes), but the heart of the record is closer to a low-key Meat Puppets hootenanny, the primary combination of guitar and snare drum providing the colors as well as the frame on gentle beauties like "Glimpse" and "Spokes." A well-placed occasional rocker, like the surf-fired "Scout" or the bar mitzvah delight "Mazurka," shake things up nicely, but for the most part, you won't stray too far from the futon. Wheel building tutorial: First pass
How to build bicycle wheels by Chris Brennan.
This is an incomplete, half assed tutorial on building bicycle wheels. I'm assuming you already have your parts measured and have gone through getting spokes cut and all that jazz. This particular build is 32 hole 3-cross (meaning each spoke crosses three other spokes from hub to rim) - but you can easily modify it for other spoke counts or crosses with some simple math which I'm not going to do for you.
FIRST PASS!
We're starting on the right side (drive side). Your rim will probably have decals near the valve hole on the right side. Your hub (for the rear) will have the threading for the cassette or cog on this side. The front may or may not be asymmetrical, so find the right side by comparing it to the rear.
A lot of tutorials advise you to separate your spokes into groups of whatever cross pattern you're doing - in this case that would be 4 sets of 8 spokes per wheel (32). I personally don't see the point in this but it may be good to do for your first build just so you can more easily visualize what you're doing before it happens.
One thing I'm going to get out of the way is a little trick I developed after much frustration on my first build. Although I've never actually watched anyone build wheels professionally I can assume this is actually the way you're supposed to do it. If you're building deeper profile rims, it will be extremely difficult to get the spoke nipple through the back of the rim after the second pass (you'll see why after you get there). Initially I tried doing this with a screwdriver and nearly went insane. The trick to doing this is to take a spare spoke and thread the nipple on it a few turns from the top (that is, the side with the head and groove for a flathead screwdriver). Now you've got it at the end of a spoke and you can put it through the rim without dropping it inside (especially nice for deeper profile rims)! I felt like a genius when I thought of this and then realized it's probably well known among mechanics as the only way to do it with any sort of efficiency. Yet I digress - you can now take your spoke key (you have one right?) and twist it off the spare spoke and onto the laced spoke all in one brilliant step. See? See how I'm doing it?
The first spoke is important. Your master spoke is going to be the one to the right of the valve hole. First pass is trailing spokes, drive side. Imagine the hub being twisted clockwise (the direction the chain would pull it assuming it's the right side). The first spoke should be nearly parallel to where the valve stem would come out. this is mostly important because if you start somewhere else you may cross over the valve at an angle which would make it really hard to fit a pump onto the valve. Believe me you don't want to have to unlace a whole set and start again. I've been there and it sucks.
I like to lay the rim on my lap and work that way. You can use a table if you like. Pick any hole on the hub (if you're feeling clever you can align the logo on the hub to the valve hole) - and drop the first spoke through the flange and put it through the master hole (to the right of the valve hole) and twist a nipple onto it. Twist a nipple.
On a 32 spoke build the hubs will have 16 holes per side, 8 laced from the inside, 8 laced from the outside. So for spoke number two, skip one hole in the hub and drop another spoke through from the top. The idea is that we skip every other hole and drop a spoke from the top, when the time comes we'll flip the wheel and do the same on the reverse side. You can go ahead and drop the rest of the spokes in every other hole at this point if you fancy that. Be careful though to skip THREE holes on the rim. When you get them all attached they should be evenly spaced as shown in the picture. Notice that the hub is twisted counter clockwise to take up the slack in the spokes. This is important and you should try to keep it twisted properly when working on it or it may confuse the shit out of you when you flip it over.
Tuk Tuk Thailand
Doing a similar job to the taxi is Thailand's ubiquitous tuk-tuk (????????). So named because of the sound of their engine, these are motorized rickshaws and are popular amongst tourists for their novelty value. Fares always have to be bargained for and most time offer no savings over an air-conditioned taxi, except perhaps if you're good at bargaining and can speak some Thai. Never believe them when they tell you that the Grand Palace is closed – a typical routine to suck you into one of the notorious gem scams!

To save it, he and the Marlboro Man (Don Johnson, at his most engaging) concoct an armed robbery that goes awry. Instead of cash, they end up with a shipment of Crystal Dream. Hunted by a drug dealer's goons, the two bark, fight, drink, and squint at each other as they try to get themselves out of their mess. This is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid for the monster-truck crowd, with plenty of breasts, choppers, broken pool cues, and empty bottles.
