Thanks to Pavel for buying my Centurion, enabling me to finally build up the Kogswell P/R frame I bought from Malcolm (via James Stacher, thanks guys!) though I’m still dialing it in a little, and hadn’t yet trimmed/capped off wires as of this shot.

Thus far it rides really comfy around town, and I can’t wait to see how it feels fully loaded. The risers won’t be ideal for long distance, so I may look for an alternative that won’t cut into the cetma’s space too much.

build list:
- 59cm Kogswell P/R w/ low-trail fork
- 26? Mavic M117 to Deore LX hubs w/
- 1.4? Michelin City tires
- Bike Planet Hardcore Freddy fenders
- Sugino XP triple cranks, currently running as double
- Brooks Team Pro saddle
- IRD cafam cantilevers (with longer link cables to come)
- Cetma 5-rail rack
- MKS-GR9 pedals w/ MKS clips
- Dia-Compe downtube shifters
- Thomson zero-rise stem
- Kalloy risers (to be swapped out for other bars at some point)
- Kalloy seatpost
- Tektro brake levers
- Deore rear derailleur / Deore LX front derailleur
- Incredibell brass duet (haha)

Worked on my bike some more today.

This bike, however is not mine.
This bike, however, is interesting.
It's called a penny-weird-thing.
And basically it's a penny farthing with a small front tire. . .how anyone will ride this i don't know, but it truly is a work of art.

OK, so why this picture for today you ask?
Well, today felt kinda backwards... kinda topsy turvey . . .

And well, that's kinda how this bike is.

Today wasn't bad, I just felt slightly off kilter--but in a good way.

So cheers to you, penny-weird-thing!

  • Shifters, alternatively known as Shifters of Might and Magic, is a 2002 role-playing game, published and developed by The 3DO Company for the PlayStation 2. Set in the fictional Might and Magic universe, it is a direct sequel to the PlayStation 2 incarnation of Warriors of Might and Magic.

"Il Calabrone" - The Hornet

Built from the frame up. Had the frame for a few months and didn't really know what to do with it. It's a 52cm Cramerotti Aluminum frame, traditional track racing non-compact geometry.
Had the rear wheel w/ 8-spd casette laying around, as well as the flat handlebar and SPD mountain pedals from before I switched to road cleats.
Most of the other parts were sourced from Oak Bay Bikes: cranks, front wheel, tires, shifters/levers, grips, seatpost and stem adapter to convert the old quill stem to threadless in order to accept the oversized handlebar mounting point.
Saddle was sourced from usedvic for $20.

The parts are by no means fancy or expensive. Apart from the tires, stem, seatpost and grips, everything else was taken from the used/extra/junk bin of the Oak Bay Bikes shop.

Contemplating downsizing to a single front ring as the bike accelerates and maintains decent speed going around town. The entire setup is so light, it takes next to nothing to sprint uphill. Fun little bike, fun build, too!

SRAM grip shift.

I changed out the 7 speed Shimano trigger for this SRAM 8 speed grip shift. Despite being somewhat of a cheaply made part, I've found this grip shifter to be both extremely precise, and mechanically simple, which is good.

I'm new to the grip shift world, but I think I much prefer the action over triggers. I feel much more in control of the bike.

I like strippers...

...of the chemical variety. Using a chemical paint stripper has saved me a lot of work on the Bianchi road bike I'm refinishing (1988 Sport SX). I snagged it on ebay for $30 and picked it up locally. The rust damage on the frame was sparse but incredibly ugly. I decided to give the bike a spray paint job. Gonna go all white using a one-step epoxy. I tested it out on the fork and it's very smooth and even. Feels very hard and durable as well. I probably won't even clear coat it, just polish it up with wax. The bike should look good for a rattlecan job when I'm done. Can't wait to ride it!

Mr. Snaauw was probably the 3th 'velopicedist' (cyclist) of The Netherlands. In 1867 he had his bicycle made by the local blacksmith W. Stijnis. Snaauw's first bicycle was a legal copy of a Dutch copy of a French Michaux-velopicede.
Snaauw was also one of the first Dutch racing cyclists.

Once The Netherlands had dozens of real bicycle factories, and hundreds of bicycle brands. But not all bicycle manufacturers registered their brand name. 'Sultana' was such a brand.

Some of those manufacturers were also agent of an English bicycle brand. The British bicycle industry was dominant in those days. And the competition powers of the Dutch industry were still too weak.

This Firm, a dealer not a manufacturer, also imports German bicycles.

Picture info: ISO 400, 1/200, f/5.60, 55mm, Av, flash

This bike got me through college. These days, it hangs from a hook in my garage. I decided to pump the tires up today (stupid Presta valves!) and take it for a spin.

I used to know how to change bike tires and stuff. Pretty handy. I'd put slicks on when I was at school and when I'd go actual "mountain biking", I'd put the knobbys back on. These days, I have no idea where the slicks went or if I have them anymore.

It's a decent bike considering I got maybe 18 years ago (OMG. I just fell out of my chair). It was when front suspensions (Rockshox anyone) were the rage and I couldn't afford it. No suspension on this bike!

POP! goes the tire~

This is a pic of my bike tire i had to show a repairman.

The whole thing started with a gas station attendant who didn't know how to pump my bike tires...Pop!
had to go get the inner tire fixed 2000yen. then on the way home, the tire started making noise...and this bubble appeared. As I pushed the bike back to the repair shop, the bubble got bigger and bigger. It go SO big i couldn't push my bike any further. So i took a pic...and walked the rest of the way. When we went to get my bike, the new tire had POPped too. Ended up paying another 3000. sigh... but it was an interesting day~! ^_^

The day before T?t (Lunar New Year) is always a special day for marketplace. It’s the time for big sale-off. In my hometown Dalat, the busiest is the second-hand clothing market. The vendors open their shops on the streets and sidewalks, selling varieties of used but still in good condition clothes, or brand-new but defective clothing products with dirt-cheap prices. It’s the time for local people to go shopping for T?t celebration. The best-sellers are traditional T?t decorations with printed wishes, red packets for lucky money to give to children, and ceramic piggy banks. The reportage is finished in Feb 13, 2010.

I've got over 11,000 miles on it and the thing still rolls like new. Although, I'm on my 4th set of tires, and the 3rd seat, I have replaced the headlight and taillight at least 3 times. I replaced the rear gear cluster and chain back in 1999. These replacements shouldn't be too bad considering the bike is 17 years old. I'll take a closer photo of it here pretty soon. I really enjoy the bike.

Built to last...

Known as 'the wrecker' at my local bike shop the time has finally come to invest in a pair of wheels that will withstand my abuse and my plans to ride the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) next year.

165 miles, 17 hills and miles on the Pave will put any bike and rider to the test.

The wheels are: Royce Titanium hubs, Ambrosio Excellence rims laced up with 32 spokes front and rear. Shod with Schwalbe 25c Durano Plus Tyres.

Local Bike Shop said "These wheels are guaranteed for life. If you buckle them or break a spoke on them I will fix them for free." Can't say fairer than that!

I noticed a funny thubbing sound on my rear brakes the other day. When I went out to try and adjust the brakes and true up the wheel a bit I discovered this missing chunk of rim as the real culprit!

Trek: David Carson, Recent Werk

Trek is a collection of David Carson's most evocative photographs: everyday people, places and objects transformed through an extraordinary sense of color, free association, and vision. An original way of seeing that elevates deceptively ordinary snapshots into elegant 'painted' images that are charged with an eerie kind of beauty.
With Trek, David Carson is deftly shuffling the deck, bridging an elusive gap between two different genres. These images represent every corner of the world, and what he's chosen to record is usually what we would miss, that carsonesque spot where his eye rests.
David Carson's photography was exhibited in San Francisco and London in 1999, and is currently touring Europe. He won the International Center of Photography's coveted award for best use of design in photography. He works out of New York as film director, lecturer, designer, consultant, and author.

  • A bicycle frame is the main component of a bicycle, on to which wheels and other components are fitted. The modern and most common frame design for an upright bicycle is based on the safety bicycle, and consists of two triangles, a main triangle and a paired rear triangle.

  • a light strong grey lustrous corrosion-resistant metallic element used in strong lightweight alloys (as for airplane parts); the main sources are rutile and ilmenite

  • Titanium ( ) is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. Sometimes called the "space age metal", it has a low density and is a strong, lustrous, corrosion-resistant (including sea water, aqua regia and chlorine) transition metal with a silver color.

Polished Titanium

Polished Titanium

One thing I always dislike about welded bike frames is the messy looking welds. These are VERY cleanly finished welds... and on an unpainted mass produced titanium bike, with a fully polished finish. This is my Sumitomo "Max Titarion" frame from around 1990. The huge Sumitomo Metals Corporation of Japan produced the bikes... and also fabricated all of the drawn seamless CP (commercially pure) titanium tubing and all of the forged Ti dropouts, fork crown, and fittings for these bikes. The bikes were produced for several years and the framesets were also sold to several manufacturers to be re-badged under their own marques. The bicycle program was suddenly dropped by the company in the early 1990s.

Ruined Bog at Mountain Fellowship, PA 031

This huge slab of mud at a park in Pennsylvania used to be a wonderful biologically diverse bog. It became a favorite area for ATVs and dirt bikes. All the plant life was destroyed. The Platanthera lacera and Malaxis unifolia, photographed nearby, are just two examples of the sorts of native plants that used to thrive in the bog.
