yet another.

yet another.

yesterday was way too crazy and this time change is realllly starting to
kill me.

our last night in orlando was monday night so we had originally planned
to hit up backbooth with everyone just to kind of see everybody before
we took off, but we totally forgot we had to bring a couple friends
home, and one lives in West Palm Beach which is about a 3 hour drive
from us. Monday morning we woke up fairly early to get some business
stuff done before we were gone, but after time passed and dinner time
rolled around, it was just going to be impossible to drive to WPB and
back and still have the time/energy to go to backbooth.

we left Orlando to take Ellie home around 8P and when we got there we
had dinner with her and Kirk then took off to take Geo home. we didn't
end up getting back to the hotel until around 4:30A when we started
packing like mad horses. Aurora's flight left at 8:30A so she had to
take me to Renee's house on her way because my flight didn't leave until
1:15P. we had different flights there because she has an Alaska
Airlines credit card that gets her free flights so that's how she got
her ticket, and I just paid mine cash so we ended up on two different
airlines. not what I really wanted to do, but it happens.

I've never packed so fast in my life. we needed to be out of the door
by 5:30A so we hauled ass on packing our million bags, just so we could
lay down for a quick 15 minute power nap. silly me didn't think about
how bad I'm going to want to stay asleep after that 15 minutes though.
it was just a tease :(

so I got to Renee's and was seriously ready to just pass out, but I
couldn't. did some chit chatting, watching weird movies, played with
the puppys, cuddled, and eventually went to breakfast... errrr
breakfast&lunch&dinner I suppose, hahaha. we had egg rolls, pancakes,
eggs, mozzerella sticks, chicken, sausage, etc. holler@ completely
grossing our server out :)

time finally rolled around to go to the airport and that was an
experience in itself. if ya weren't talking to me on aim yesterday
while I was at the airport -- you'll have no idea. totally consisted of
losing cars, taking 80MPH esculators, tripping over midgets, and going
through x-ray machines. sounds pretty weird, but when you put two girls
like renee & myself together, this shit is bound to happen. I'm
probably confusing 99% of you that are reading this but if I went into
detail, this blog would be never-ending. sorry to everyone on aim
yesterday when I was at the point of not being able to shut my mouth
:-D

LALALALALAAAAAA....

OH! also, sorry this trip confused a lot of you. I was in orlando for
one week but this was not my move. I flew back to California last night
and my real move is in about 20 days where we will be driving to
Florida. super stoked on fun roadtrips with walkie talkies& lots of
caffine & sugar. uh ohs.

anyway I really have no reason to be up right now so I'm going to fall
back asleep. I have more to talk about when it comes to living in
Florida, goals, going to school, etc., so check back.

PS Taryn it was really nice talking with you girly! I hope we can do it
again :)

Bathing beauties, clear waters

Bathing beauties, clear waters

So I had to get at least one shot of babes in bikinis for my buddies, or else they'd say I've gone soft! And since Karen's overly modest and threatened to wrench my head off if I took one of her in her bikini, I was resigned to let my eye roam and find another subject.

So here it is! Eye candy for the lads. Hubba-hubba! Wooo! Ahem... ok, as you were.

And as it turns out, these are the same two young Dutch women that we sat next to on our flight from Amsterdam to Malta! What a coincidence. They were also on the same chartered boat we took to Comino and back as well. We have no idea which hotel they were in back on Malta though. We chatted with them a bit on the boat and they were nice enough young ladies.

Match Holders: One Hundred Years of Ingenuity : With Price Guide (A Schiffer Book for Collectors)

The invention of the friction match in England in the 1830s helped to improve the daily lives of people in ways frequently overlooked. Match holders made their appearance by the 1850s in nearly endless, striking variety. Denis B. Alsford has complied fascinating historical influences, patents, marks and over 680 color photos to she light on the developments of match holders from their beginnings to their more recent forms as commonplace household items. A wide variety of match holders are depicted including pocket, "candle-in-a-box", stand-alone and wall hanging models. Paten drawings, discussions of major manufacturers, and copy from the British magazine "Punch" add dimension as well. All who are concerned with tobacco history, collecting match holders and antiques will find this book a useful reference.

1957 289 Corvette Ron Romero 513 314 3149 $99,000

1957 289 Corvette Ron Romero 513 314 3149 $99,000

Completely restored and documented NCRS Top Flight 1957 270hp Corvette. This Corvette received a complete nut and bolt frame off restoration in 1992. Photos documenting the process are included below. Every number that I have checked on this car is correct in terms of both application and chronology. Though Chevrolet did yet not stamp the vin number of the car on the engine in 1957, the other stampings, casting numbers, and most importantly casting dates match. The car has been used sparingly and has received "no expense spared" maintenance since it was restored. The odometer shows the mileage at 6,340 which I believe to be correct since the restoration. The most previous owner of the car was an avid and notable collector with many Corvettes, Ferraris, and other distinguished cars in his collection. The quality of this car could not nearly be duplicated for the asking price.

As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our cars come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to examine each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about bidding. If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call.

Exterior

The Cascade Green exterior paint is in outstanding condition. The paint has a smooth finish and a brilliant gloss. There are no major scratches, scrapes, or other blemishes in the paint. The chrome parts are in awesome condition as is the stainless and other bright work. Often many corvettes will have particularly chipped up front ends, this car does not. The underside of the front end is in great condition. There are very few small spots in the paint that were too small to show in in photos, but nothing that is noticeable from 5 feet away. The wheels and hub caps and are in excellent condition with no dents or curb rash. The tires look like new. The frame and everything else on the car is very solid. There are absolutely no rust issues with the car what so ever. The underside of the car is as clean as one would expect from a 6,000 mile car that has never seen rain or other weather. The car looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Interior

The Beige interior of the corvette is in superb condition. The entire interior was freshened when the car was restored. The seats look almost brand new with absolutely no splits, tears, or stains. The seat is not worn through in the typical places, such as where the driver gets in and out of the car. The carpet is in excellent condition and looks virtually brand new. There are no rips, holes, or damage in the carpet at all. The door panels are in terrific condition and fit tightly to the doors. The dash looks awesome, with no cracks, scratches, or sun damage of any kind. The car has never been smoked in, there is no ash in the ashtray or aroma what so ever. The trunk, complete with spare and mat, is in virtually new condition as well. The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical

This car is in excellent mechanical condition, there are no issues at all with this Corvette and the car needs nothing at all. All of the mechanical items on this car has seen very limited use since the car received a full mechanical restoration. The car starts right away every time. It runs well and idles well. There is no smoke when starting or driving the car. Everything on this car works as it should, all of the lights and gauges work, the horn works, and even the radio can pick up and play stations. This Corvette has plenty of power and is very fast for a 1950's era auto. The transmission is solid and the clutch feels very good. The transmission is a 3-speed, which is correct for the car. 4-speed transmissions were not available until later in the 1957 model year. The 3-speed was only manual transmission available when this car was built in late 1956. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the top off.

Overall Condition

Overall the vehicle is in dazzling condition. The previous owner was meticulous about his caring for the vehicle. He stated that the car was also certified Bloomington Gold and there is mention of that in the paperwork, but I do not have the certificate. I do have the original NCRS Top Flight certificate. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing, and as you can see this car is very correct. The Solid Axle years have not had the detrimental over inflation that the mid year Corvettes have suffered from recently. They are all solid investments for a collector. One could enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than your purchase price. This time of year in this eco

Harpy Eagle

Harpy Eagle

American Harpy Eagle [Harpia harpyja] The largest and most poweful bird of prey in the Americas. Found in tropical settings in Central America and the Amazon basin of South America, sloths and monkeys make up the majority of its diet. {Doesn't quite seem like a fair contest to me matching a diving Harpy Eagle with its six foot wing span to snatch a sloth moving at roughly half the speed of the slickest snail}

Their talons can be up to 5 inches long and the Harpy is strong enough in flight to pluck prey 3/4 of its own weight out of the canopy of tropical trees.

They produce two eggs every two or three years and as soon as the first egg hatches the other egg is ignored and fails to produce a young eagle.

I was fascinated by the "egg" display at the Birds of Prey exhibit. In addition to the normal chicken egg shape we are all use to seeing they had "pear shape" eggs that ledge laying birds produce that will roll around in tight circles when disturbed (preventing them from going over the edge like a normally shaped bird egg would).

Harpy Eagles nest in the biggest tallest rainforest trees they can find. A favorite is the Kapok tree and locals consider it "bad luck" to disturb such a tree (habitat preservation).

Heading home we stopped in Boise for a big country breakfast at the Cracker Barrel restaurant. We then decided to check out the World Center for Birds of Prey. After our visit there I had mixed feelings about the place. It was a large well maintained facility with friendly knowledgeable people working there. They had two condors on site and the work they have done to try to help save this large bird from total extinction is admirable.

On the negative side, there is the conundrum. If a bird of prey is healthy enough to live in the wild, I hate to zee them in a zoo or anywhere where they are unable to fly and soar free and high. At least fish in an aquarium can swim, but birds of prey, no matter how noble the cause, don’t seem to belong in pens or places where they are unable to do what they were born and designed to do. Fly.

Most of the pens made it difficult to get a good look at the birds (the condor exhibit and about a half dozen Plexiglas “rooms” were exceptions. There is definitely an emphasis on “joining” and “contributing” but they weren’t pushy about it.

We thoroughly enjoyed the presentation portion of our visit, when a volunteer brought out one of the birds and did an outstanding job of describing everything about the featured bird. The star of the show the day we visited was the unlikely “Turkey Vulture”, who honestly seemed to enjoy his time in the limelight. I can even go as far as to say he tried his best to show off a bit. The facts presented by the lady volunteer about this ungainly looking scavenger were interesting.

The price of admission is reasonable and it is only a half dozen mile drive from the Boise Cracker Barrel. I couldn’t get any descent photos of the birds of prey in the small enclosures (dark, barred and netted). The photos I’m posting were about as good as I could do with my very limited photographer’s skills. The birds are magnificent and I hope most or all of them are destined to fly the skies once more.

Day 114 - Sonic CD

Day 114 - Sonic CD

Day 114 - Sonic CD

Happy 20th Birthday Sonic The Hedgehog - [6.23.2011] - Which is also the day of this photo.

----

Sonic CD is a very very interesting game in the Sonic The Hedgehog series. Mostly for the simple fact that it's a true old school Sonic platformer of the 16-bit era... yet it didn't get the mass exposure all the other Sonic games received.

It's obvious the reasons for that though. The console it was released on. Sonic CD was a key title in the launch of the Mega CD/ SEGA CD add-on for Megadrive.

When I was a kid I was REALLY wanting to get my hands on a Mega CD (and not long later... the 32X), but it never happened, they were just too costly and I choose to have a variety of games for my SNES and Megadrive for birthdays and Christmas's rather than having a present focused entirely on 1 of those add-ons (that eventually flopped).

So. Due to my lack of owning a Mega CD, I went years without having played Sonic CD, and given the fact I absolutely LOVED the Megadrive's 2D platformers (and managed to still appreciate Sonic 3D)...this I was really eager to get my hands on it.

I did eventually get to play it in CD-Rom form for the PC briefly. Although when I first played it I was under the impression the game had glitched because there were numerous rings in unobtainable places :|. Only to later learn that was because of the alternate variations you could have per stage with Sonic CD's 'go into the past/ future' game mechanic.

The Past/ Future mechanic definitely brought along a fresh flavour to anyones 16-bit Sonic experience, and in some ways it actually made the game a bit more puzzling and deeper in comparison to the usual simple 'left to right' goal. Beyond that new element though, everything else was pretty much your standard Sonic core a lot of us had come to love.

To describe the gameplay to those whom haven't played Sonic CD, I'd say it was basically a hybrid Sonic 1 and 2, the visuals were mostly taken from Sonic 1, just a bit more vibrant thanks to the extra capabilities the Mega CD hardware brought with it, although you had the spin dash and a couple of enemies whom would go on to appear in Sonic 2.

You do have plenty of new enemies and Robotnik boss fights in Sonic CD. Along with a whole new soundtrack of songs, although aside from the opening theme, most of the songs are kind of unmemorable for me. I think part of the reason the songs are unmemorable though lays with the fact that when you go into the past of future variants of a level, the music changes too, so you never really seem to have a song drilled into your head for long enough for it to grow on you.

I'm not saying the music is bad though. It definitely feels very "1990's", in fact I feel like some of the songs could fit into those small 'filler segments' between the story in like an episode of Saved by the Bell or something, say were'd they show all the people going to there next class or something before cutting to a clip of screech talking to Mr Belding in his office. Shout outs to the 90's!

Sonic CD is a great game though, and if you ever loved the 16-bit Sonic games you owe it to yourself to check it out. If like me you don't have a Mega CD/ SEGA CD then pick up "Sonic Gems Collection" on the Gamecube (which can also be played on Wii), PS2, or XBOX.

*bonus shout outs for this being the debut of "Metal Sonic"...and to a lesser extent "Amy Rose".

Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Shivnarine Chanderpaul provides a notable counterpoint to the contemporary game. At once he is inimitable and timeless - no more a product of his period than a kitchen clock, and yet not a creature of the past either, for he has scored runs yesterday and today and will score runs tomorrow. Just that he goes about it in his own sweet and deceptively frail way, relying on deflections and glides, hands as opposed to forearms, a wand as opposed to a tree trunk, persuasion and perseverance as opposed to power. He is a rubber man put among concrete pillars. In short, he is a reminder that, even now, cricket has many faces and talent can take many forms.

It has taken a boy from a distant fishing village to remind us that sporting technique cannot be pinned in a book like a dead butterfly or refined into a mathematical formula. Chanderpaul's career shows that an ambitious sportsman can defy the straitjacket of conventional thought and even scientific analysis and still make his way in the game. Except that "defy" is the wrong word because the left-hander has no defiance in him, is too modest and uncertain to confront anything beyond his own circumstances.

Nevertheless, from the outset he has been extraordinarily bold. At the very least he has ignored accepted wisdom, dared to walk into the world from a remote outpost as his own player and his own man. Perhaps it was that he knew no other way, or perhaps it is that he knew more than he let on. In any event he has demonstrated that a player blessed with ability and determination, and prepared to follow his own instincts, can develop his own game and take it with him on the long journey. It is the half-baked who fall short.

Typically, he has crept up the batting rankings till, almost unnoticed, he has reached fifth place, the highest perch attained in an impressive, occasionally interrupted career. Nor is he far adrift from the top position. Of course, his inspired performances against the Australians in the last few weeks, and especially his match-saving innings in Antigua, lie behind his recent climb, but the deft 33-year-old has been in full flow all year. Altogether he has played eight Tests in the last 12 months, and has collected 1635 runs in the three formats at an average of 86.05. Along the way he has added six centuries to his tally. Nor has he punished mugs. Besides the Australians, these runs have been scored against England and South Africa in their own backyards. It is a mighty achievement.

Of course it is the finest patch in a startling and sometimes stirring career, but Chanderpaul is hardly an overnight sensation. To the contrary, he has been an outstanding batsman for a decade. His rise is not remotely fortuitous or even unexpected. Simply, it has been an exposition of proven technique and resolute temperament. Chanderpaul has been scoring lots of runs for years, most of them in the face of the adversity that has long gripped West Indian cricket. Indeed, he has displayed laudable immunity to the forces of distraction, destruction and downright incompetence that have often swirled around him. Always he has moved along at his own pace in his own way. At times he has been a tortoise, on other occasions a hare, but always he has been staunch and skilful. His entire career tells of durability.

By no means is Chanderpaul's rise a surprise. His position reflects the work of a singular batsman with a calculating mind and a strong insight into the requirements of batsmanship. Productivity has been his aim, intuition his guide. His game is more organised than it seems. At the crease he resembles a puppet guided by an unseen hand, constantly moving, apparently at random, yet every part of the body knows its role and its location, and almost always he ends up in the right place at the right time, whereupon he essays the shot of his choosing. Chanderpaul's technique is not so much odd as original. But then it is the product of his wits and not an outsider's words. It is not so much that he turned his back on orthodoxy. The introduction was never made.

In any case, even by the most rigid standards the boy from the fishing village does an awful lot right. Most particularly, he watches the ball as does a mother hen her brood. Late movement might trap the unwary but the left-hander is not so easily foxed. He knows the trickery of the world and the cunning of bowlers and the blindness of umpires, and takes no risks save those of his own choosing. He is also an extremely disciplined batsman, not prone to flights of fancy or premeditation or the other follies of the mind. He does not indulge himself in wayward thoughts or headstrong outbursts. Rather, he goes quietly about his business, trusting no one except himself, giving the game its due, always aware of the cost of carelessness.

Accordingly it is a mistake to dismiss him as a curiosity, a batting version of Muttiah Muralitharan or John Gleeson. Apart from anything else, batsmen must obey cer

Indigo Bunting4

Indigo Bunting4

The Indigo Bunting, Passerina cyanea, is a small seed-eating bird in the family Cardinalidae. It is migratory, ranging from southern Canada to northern Florida during the breeding season, and from southern Florida to northern South America during the winter.[1] It often migrates by night, using the stars to navigate.[2] Its habitat is farmland, brush areas, and open woodland.[3] The Indigo Bunting is closely related to the Lazuli Bunting, and interbreeds with the latter species where their ranges overlap.

The Indigo Bunting is a small bird, with a length of 11.5–13 cm (4.5–5 in). It displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is a vibrant blue in the summer and a brown color during the winter months, while the female is brown year-round. The male displays brightly colored plumage during the breeding season to attract a mate. Nest-building and incubation are done solely by the female. The diet of the Indigo Bunting consists primarily of insects during the summer months and seeds during the winter months.

Taxonomy

The Indigo Bunting is included in the family Cardinalidae, which is made up of passerine birds found in North and South America, and is one of seven birds in the genus Passerina.[4] It was originally described as Loxia cyanea by Linnaeus in his 18th-century work, Systema Naturae.[5] The current genus name, Passerina, is derived from the Latin term passer for true sparrows and similar small birds,[6] while the species name, cyanea, is from the Latin word meaning dark or sea blue.[7]

The Indigo Bunting is closely related to the Lazuli Bunting, and interbreeds with the latter species where their ranges overlap, in the Great Plains.[8] They were declared to form a superspecies by the American Ornithologists' Union in 1983.[9] However, according to sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene of members of the genus Passerina, it was determined that the Indigo Bunting and Lazuli Bunting are not, in fact, sister taxa. The Indigo Bunting is the sister of two sister groups, a “blue” (Lazuli Bunting and Blue Grosbeak) and a “painted” (Rosita's Bunting, Orange-breasted Bunting, Varied Bunting, and Painted Bunting) clade. This genetic study shows these species diverged between 4.1 and 7.3 million years ago. This timing, which is consistent with fossil evidence, coincides with a late-Miocene cooling, which caused the evolution of a variety of western grassland habitats. Evolving to reduce size may have allowed buntings to exploit grass seeds as a food source.[10]
[edit] Description

The Indigo Bunting is 11.5–13 cm (4.5–5 in) long, with a wingspan of 20–23 cm (8–9 in).[11] During the breeding season, the adult male has deep blue plumage, with a darker crown that verges on purple. The wings and tail are black with blue edges. In fall and winter plumage, the male is similar to the female, but often retains some blue feathers. The adult female is dark brown on the upperparts and lighter brown on the underparts. It has indistinct wing bars and is faintly streaked with dark underneath.[12] The immature bird resembles the female in coloring, although a male may have hints of blue on the tail and shoulders and have darker streaks on the underside. The beak is short and conical. In the adult female, the bill is light brown tinged with blue, and in the adult male the upper half is brownish-black while the lower is light blue.[13] The feet and legs are black or gray.[14]
[edit] Distribution and habitat

The habitat of the Indigo Bunting is brushy forest edges, open deciduous woods, second growth woodland, and farmland.[3] The breeding range stretches from southern Canada to Maine, south to northern Florida and eastern Texas, and westward to southern Nevada. The winter range begins in southern Florida and central Mexico and stretches south through the West Indies and Central America to northern South America.[1] It has occurred as a vagrant in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, Serbia and the United Kingdom.[15]
[edit] Behavior

The Indigo Bunting communicates through vocalizations and visual cues. A sharp chip! call is used by both sexes, and is used as an alarm call if a nest or chick is threatened. A high-pitched, buzzed zeeep is used as a contact call when the Indigo Bunting is in flight.[16] The song of the male bird is a high-pitched buzzed sweet-sweet chew-chew sweet-sweet, lasting two to four seconds, sung to mark his territory to other males and to attract females. Each male has a single complex song,[14] which he sings while perched on elevated objects, such as posts, wires, and bush-tops.[17] In areas where the ranges of the Lazuli Bunting and the Indigo Bunting overlap, the males defend territories from each another.[18] Migration takes place in April and May and then again in September and October.[1] The Indigo Bunting often migrates during the night, using the stars to direct itself

Working on the canal for the rice

Working on the canal for the rice

"San Juan Poriahu" is an old estancia located on the Ibera Marshlands, a vast extension of virtually untouched wilderness combined with the colorful land of the gauchos. It has thirty-two thousand acres used primarily for livestock. Almost half of the land is covered by marshes, and the vast wetlands of the Ibera Lagoon begin on its eastern border. On its varied landscape, which ranges from marshes to long, low hills, live carpinchos (large rodents), yacares (alligators), swamp deer, monkeys, nandues (ostriches) and the nearly extinct aguara-guazu (hairy wolf). More than two hundred species of birds have been recorded, including the jabiru, the largest stork in the Americas.
The main buildings are built on the crest of a low hill surrounded by woods of native trees and plants: lapachos, ibira-puita, gomeros (rubber plants), and ombu trees. A settlement of low houses of simple design, well adapted to the region, the three-hundred-year-old house was a former Jesuit chapel. It has small windows, and its thatched roof offers protection from the intense summer heat.
In the seventeenth century San Juan Poriahu was part of the vast circle of estancias of the Society of Jesus. The terrain was particularly well suited for raising cattle: it had fresh water and its fertile pastures formed a sort of island between the marshes that was easy to defend. Part of the old Camino Real, which connected distant parts of the colony, is preserved on the estancia. General Belgrano passed along this road on his way to Paraguay after the May Revolution of 1810 which led to the independence of Argentina from Spain in 1816.
After the Jesuits were expelled in 1769, the lands belonged to a local Spanish pioneer, Don Pedro de Igarzabal, and later to an old family from Corrientes, the Fernandez Blanco. In 1890 Angel Fernandez Blanco died heirless and bequeathed the property to a friend, Ernesto Meabe, a cattleman and distinguished public figure in the province. Meabe bought two contiguous estancias and joined the three properties together, calling the new one San Juan Poriahu-which in Guarani Indian language means Poor San Juan-because the estancia originally had no livestock. Meabe pioneered Shorthorn cattle breeding in Corrientes and brought the first shorthorn to the estancia in wagons from Buenos Aires. His son Raimundo, one of eight children, inherited both San Juan Poriahu and Santa Ana, a neighboring estancia. An active politician, he was also a progressive, successful cattleman. His daughter Ana Maria now owns the estate.
The Corrientes estancias, including San Juan Poriahu, have changed little over the years. The persistence of tradition is apparent in the ranch-hands' attire, which is so well suited to the environment that updating it has been unnecessary. The gauchos still wear the typical bombacha (baggy trousers) and a wide belt; their leggings are made of canvas because they often work in water and the climate is extremely humid. A deer or carpincho hide is folded over their belts and unrolled when they work on foot to protect against rope burns and kicks from the animals. Gauchos from this province also wear a kerchief around the neck in a color that indicates their political sympathies.

Location: Mesopotamia, the north-east region, in the Ibera Marshlands, Province of Corrientes.
The Region: The Ibera marshlands ("Ibera" means Brilliant Waters) are the habitat of the most amazing wildlife in Argentina, formed by a vast extension of wetlands, lagoons and lesser pools, located in the Corrientes Province in the Mesopotamia region of north-east Argentina. An infinite variety of trees, aquatic vegetation as the beautiful "irupe" flower, endangered species as the marsh deer, capybaras (carpinchos), bountiful fish and amazing birds, storks, duck, herons, sea-gulls, flamingos inhabit this magical scenery. It is a subtropical paradise and one of the most spectacular ecosystems in the continent. Watching the colorful 'gauchos", the land of the "chamame", rhythm derived from the polka played by the Guarani Indians first on their flutes and later on with accordions after the arrival of the Europeans and savoring the "mate" in its country of origin, the typical infusion sipped from a gourd with a silver straw called "bombilla", are all part of an exciting sojourn in this intriguing setting. This destination is ideal to combine with a short side-trip to the wondruous Iguazu Falls, the untamed rain forests of the Iguazu National Park, the fantastic San Ignacio Jesuit ruins and precious stone mines that lie at close distance.
Distance from Buenos Aires: 800 miles
How to get there: To reach San Juan de Poriahu one must fly from Buenos Aires either to Corrientes or Posadas cities (one hour and a half daily flights) on Aerolineas Argentinas or Austral Airlines.

the Rufous-backed Shrike

the Rufous-backed Shrike

the Rufous-backed Shrike (Lanius schach) is a member of the bird family Laniidae, the shrikes. The eastern or Himalayan race, L. s. tricolor, is sometimes called the Black-headed Shrike.

tricolor race in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is a common resident breeder throughout the Indomalayan ecozone from Kazakhstan, through Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indian peninsula except eastern states[2], to New Guinea, found on bushes in scrubby areas and cultivation. Winter visitor to southern areas such as southeast India and Sri Lanka.

It has some resemblances to the grey shrikes, such as the Southern Grey Shrike, Lanius meridionalis, sharing the pearl grey head and mantle and black mask extending from the forehead, through the eye, to the ear coverts. An eastern race found in Bhutan to Arunachal Pradesh, sometimes called the Himalayan L. s. tricolor, has a black head extending from the eye mask to the whole crown and nape[2].

It is small for a grey shrike, but has a very long tail with rufous edges. The underparts are white, but with rufous flanks. The bill and legs are nearly black.

This bird has a characteristic upright "shrike" attitude perched on a bush, from which it sallies after lizards, large insects, small birds and rodents.

Prey may be impaled upon a sharp point, such as a thorn. Thus secured they can be ripped with the strong hooked bill, but its feet are not suited for tearing.

Its flight is undulating, but its dash is straight and determined.

This species is a very rare vagrant to western Europe on the strength of a single accepted British record on South Uist in November 2000. It has also occurred as a vagrant to Japan, Oman, Israel, Hungary and Turkey.

60 Minutes - The Birdmen (October 11, 2009)

Airdate 10/11/09 Only the most extreme of the extreme sportsmen would do this: don "wingsuits," jump off mountain tops, and glide at 140 miles per hour to the ground. That's what Steve Kroft witnessed from some of the highest peaks in Norway -- "birdmen" diving off a cliff and free falling until the air inflates the wings of their nylon suits. Not to be missed: the sound a human birdman makes on a "fly-by" over your head at 150 mph.

Went for a trip to the USA. Unfortunately my camera, a Sony a700, was broken down and I had to work with the old one, a Konica Minolta Dynax 7D. A good camera when I bhought it several years ago, but I felt handicapd after 2,5 years using it's successor.

The first airplane of the trip, from Amsterdam to London. Worked out with HDR and tonemapping (Photomatix).

Friday, June 8, 2007 was traveling day. It was a LONG day. Carl and I had stayed out too late the night before and attempted to pack up before going to bed. I still had many things to pack before leaving. Carl had an earlier flight than Jim and me. We are finally packed and heading to return the rental car and catch our flight out of Vegas to Atlanta.

In hindsight, it would have been better if we had dropped Carl off at the airport first. Then Jim and I could have returned the rental car. That would have prevented Carl from missing his flight home.

The 2011 Report on In-Flight Broadband Services: World Market Segmentation by City

The 2011 Report on In-Flight Broadband Services: World Market Segmentation by City

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "in-flight broadband services" for the year 2011. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

White Stork in Marrakech, Morocco – March 2009

White Stork in Marrakech, Morocco – March 2009

It was a complete surprise to see so many Storks nesting all over the city. I did know that Storks have nested in urban areas but only in Europe. There were many Storks nesting all over the historical sites - what an amazing site indeed!

The White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) is a large wading bird in the stork family Ciconiidae, breeding in the warmer parts of Europe (north to Estonia), northwest Africa, and southwest Asia (east to southern Kazakhstan). It is a strong migrant, wintering mainly in tropical Africa, down to the south of South Africa, and also in the Indian subcontinent.
It is a huge bird, 100-125 cm (40-50 in.) tall, with a 155-200 cm (61-79 in) wingspan and a weight of 2.3-4.5 kg (5-10 lbs). It is completely white except for the black wing flight feathers, and its red bill and legs, which are black on juveniles. It walks slowly and steadily on the ground. Like all storks with the exception of the Leptoptilos genus, it flies with its neck outstretched.
There are two subspecies (HBW):
•Ciconia ciconia ciconia Linnaeus, 1758. Europe, northwest Africa, westernmost Asia; wintering in Africa.
•Ciconia ciconia asiatica Severtsov, 1873. West-central Asia; wintering in India.
The Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana), now regarded as a distinct species, was formerly treated as a subspecies of the White Stork.
Notable breeding totals occur mainly in central and eastern Europe, with 52,500 pairs in Poland (6th International Census of White Stork, 2004)[2], 12,000-18,000 pairs in Ukraine, 10,500-13,000 pairs in Belarus, 10,000 pairs in Lithuania, the highest known density of this species in the world, and 8,500 pairs in Latvia. In Estonia the population is also increasing ca. 4000 pairs in 2004. In Germany, 3,000 of the total 3,400 pairs are in the former East Germany. There also exists a consistent number of pairs in Romania. In southwestern Asia, Turkey has the highest population, with 15,000-35,000 pairs. Apart from Spain (14,000 pairs) and Portugal (ca. 10,000 pairs in 2008), numbers in western Europe are much less healthy, with the once sizable Danish population declining to just five pairs in 1995, while re-introductions of zoo-reared birds have halted declines in Italy (30 pairs), the Netherlands (9-12 pairs), and Switzerland (120-160 pairs). A few pairs also breed in South Africa, recent colonists from within the normal wintering population (HBW). North of the breeding range, it is a passage migrant or vagrant in Finland, Great Britain, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden, and also west to the Azores and Madeira. Data (except Poland and South Africa): Snow & Perrins 1998.
Threats to the species include the drainage of wetlands and other agricultural intensification, collisions with overhead power lines, use of persistent pesticides (such as DDT) to combat locusts in Africa, and (largely illegal) hunting on passage and the wintering grounds (HBW). Some birds, known in German as Pfeilstorch ("arrow storks"), have been found in Europe with African arrows embedded in their bodies.
The White Stork is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
Twenty five years ago the population of this "iconic emblem of Alsace", the bird revered for bringing fertility and luck to any home upon which it nested, had fallen to fewer than nine pairs in the entire upper Rhine River Valley, an area closely identified with the White Stork for centuries. Conservation efforts there, particularly by the Association for the Protection and Reintroduction of Storks in Alsace and Lorraine, have successfully increased the population of birds to 270 pairs.[3]

White Storks rely on movement between thermals of hot air for long distance flight, taking great advantage of them during annual migrations between Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa. The shortest route south would take them over the Mediterranean, but since thermals only form over land, storks take a detour. The options are limited, because to the east lies the Arabian Desert, where it is difficult to find food and water - and to the west lies the Atlantic Ocean. This leaves two narrow migration corridors: eastern storks cross the straits of Bosporus to Turkey, traverse the Levant (Syria-Lebanon-Israel-Palestine), and then bypass the Sahara Desert by following the Nile, while western ones fly through the straits of Gibraltar. Either way, the storks can get help from the thermals for almost the entire trip and thus save energy.[4]
White storks breed in open farmland areas with access to marshy wetlands, building a stick nest in trees, on buildings, or special platforms. Because it is viewed as bird of good luck, it is not persecuted, and often nests close to human habitation. In southern Europe, storks' nests can be seen on churches and other buildings. It often forms small colonies. Like most of its relatives, it feeds on fish, frogs and insects but also eats small reptiles, roden

From Magura to Number 1

From Magura to Number 1

It's one of cricket's ironies that one of its best allrounders of the moment might have been lost to football instead, but for several turns of fate. Like every other boy in the provincial town of Magura, 170 miles from Dhaka, Shakib al Hasan was a regular on the playing field whenever he got a chance but the big draw was always football. His father had played the game for Khulna Division and a cousin had gone on to represent Bangladesh, so football more or less ran in the family.

Cricket was on the sporting curriculum though, and the fashion among the youth was "tape-tennis" cricket. Shakib was fairly proficient and was often "hired" to play for different villages. One such game changed his life.

A local umpire called Saddam Hossain was impressed by the kid's prowess and called him to practise with the Islampur Para Club, one of the teams in the Magura Cricket League. Shakib turned up and, as was his wont, batted aggressively and bowled fast. That was what he knew best. Then, suddenly, inexplicably, he began bowling spin - and had the batsmen totally flummoxed.

He made the cut for the Islampur team and picked up a wicket with the first ball on his Magura Cricket League debut - his first-ever delivery with a proper cricket ball.

It could sound a bit too pat but Shakib's journey from Magura to the top of the ICC rankings for allrounders - the first Bangladesh player ever to top any ICC ranking - hasn't happened overnight, nor has it been the result of any one dramatic or magical moment. It's been a long journey, with its share of ups and downs, happiness and sorrow, laughter and tears, since he first held a bat eight-odd years ago.

Shakib's eyes drift away as he narrates his story, building up a tapestry of images and defining moments. Throughout, there is surprise that a boy who didn't play a proper game of cricket till he was in his teens could be the world's top allrounder.

The talent-scouting camp at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) comes first to his mind. His ability had been noticed at a one-month camp in Narail before he was chosen for the six-month training course at BKSP. He remembers his father warning him about neglecting his studies, as well as the persuasive tactics of the BKSP coach, "Bappi sir" (Ashraful Islam Bappi). "Uncle, let him go. He has a future in cricket," Bappi pleaded with Shakib's father.

Life at the BKSP camp was good, with Shakib managing to enroll himself in class eight under special consideration. His skills with bat and ball helped him overcome the adversities of a new environment.

His next break came when he was called up in the absence of one of the regulars in a domestic Under-15 fixture. His century off 52 balls was enough to earn him a place in the national U-15 team, followed by, with metronomic frequency, steps up to the U-17, U-19 and Bangladesh A levels, and then to the national team.

And then one day last month he got a phone call from a journalist. "You are the world's No. 1 allrounder, according to the one-day rankings published today. Can I have your reactions?"

What could he possibly say? Such emotions cannot be put in words. From the day he seriously took up cricket, this had been his dream: of reaching the top - not just himself as a player but his team as well. His job was only half done, but it was a great leap forward.

You can imagine Shakib talking to the journalist - "I'm just so happy. My dream's come true, etc etc," he would have warbled in a quivering voice. But if you thought that, you really don't know Shakib very well.

Of course he was delighted, and said as much, before adding: "What reactions do I have? Well, it hasn't quite sunk in. Can I think on it through the night and let you know tomorrow?"

It's this quality, of not getting carried away, of being in control of his emotions, that made him stand out among the other boys at BKSP, a trait noticed by the coach Nazmul Abedin Fahim as well. "A lot of people say that Shakib has little emotion, but he is quite an emotional lad. He just possesses this remarkable ability to control his emotions."

Fahim remembers the day he first recognised Shakib's immense talent as a cricketer. Fahim was in charge of the Bangladesh U-15 team touring India. The first match, against the Bengal U-15s, in the industrial town of at Kalyani, was played on a brand new pitch. The tourists lost early wickets but Shakib stuck around to score a match-winning 69. It became a habit on the tour - early dismissals followed by a rescue act by Shakib.

Fahim was also in charge of the Bangladesh team - of which Shakib was a member - at the U-17 Asia Cup in India in 2004. Those around at the time recall vividly the occasion when, asked by a journalist to name the team's best bowler, batsman and fielder, Fahim replied "Shakib" to all three.

Theirs was a long-standing relationship. Fahim, a veteran coa

It is said that Fuerteventura, just south of Lanzarote in the southwestern wash of the archipelago, has the best of the Canary beaches. Most of these long, amber stretches remain pristine, free of people and their developments, with a vibrant ring of emerald water washing over the shallow coastal shelf that characterizes Fuerteventura's coastlines. Like neighboring and geologically similar Lanzarote, Fuerteventura's islanders, who are concentrated in the capital city of Puerto del Rosario and south from there to the ridge of the southern Jandia Peninsula, enjoy near-constant sunshine but are made to endure arid conditions blown in from the Sahara. Not surprisingly, windsurfing and kiteboarding are big business for those who come to Fuerteventura to escape the crowds of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Most head to the Jandia beach, site of a regular world championship competition. The Flag Beach Windsurf Center (C/ General Linares 31, tel. 92 853 55 39) can fill you in on the conditions and set you up with a sail. A unique experience can be had on a camel safari in the desert landscape of Fuerteventura. Local islanders tend to agree that Betancuria, in the crux of low mountains near Fuerteventura's west coast, is the loveliest village on the island. It is also one of the earliest areas of settlement. In the local Museo de Betancuria, archeological and ethnological exhibitions are dedicated to the native Guanches who established one of their earliest communities in the area. Nearly a thousand years later, work on the village's Catedral de Santa Maria was begun soon after the village had been founded in the early 15th century.

ATLANTA AIRPORT HILTON "Hotel of Choice Until?"

ATLANTA AIRPORT HILTON

This was my Hotel of choice until? Well I never thought I would be talking BAD about this Hotel. I went back to the Atlanta Airport Hilton like I do once a year to see my two best Friends. I made my reservations back in May to save on the room rate. I paided net direct rates for three nights with tax my rate was $339.90 with my credit card, which ment if I did not come or I wanted to change days I couldn't for to get this rate I was locked in. I arrived at the Airport early on the morning of 7/28/06 and via the free Hilton shuttle bus ride from the Airport I arrived at the front desk of this Hilton around 10:30am I was told that my room wasn't going to be ready until 12:00 noon so I was to call back later or just come back. I took my bag over to the bell man who packed it in a closet for me when I returned from Downtown. Well I didn't come back until around 2:00pm. I walked back to the front desk and the same woman said can I help you. Yes I told her my name and the above story and she said (SORRY MR. ?) your room isn't ready a guest hasn't checked out, well I informed her thats not my problem!!! She then began to check for another room as I waited she said I have a 3rd floor smoking room, I informed her no I was about to show her my reservation offline stating I want ONLY A NON-SMOKING ROOM, and a HIGHER FLOOR between 17 and the 15th floors facing the Airport. See I'm a Freelance Photographer and I love a view. I was then given what I PAIDED FOR room 1621 as I took my leave of the front desk let me tell you I was TICKED off the one major problem I hate about most Hotels is the attitude they give to single people on Vacation!!! I got to my room all the way down the hall second door from the last on the left side of the hall. I opened the door and walked in. I opened the drapes and got a very good look at what I would be waking up to in the next several days. My room was VERY NICE a great King size bed, and the bathroom was nice also. I had a little trouble with the TV but after maintance came up everything was ok after that. The room 1621 has three windows it may be the second to the last room down at almost the need of a long hall way but for a Photographer it is heaven. Now back to why I will stay at another Hotel next year, for there are several in the area I could try. Like the (RENAISSANCE HOTEL) that is right in front of the runways. Or the (CROWNE PLAZA) that faces the Hilton. And others but I like upgraded Hotels with services in the Hotel so I don't have to walk outside or get a cab ride. Now back to the Hilton airport problems the Hotel booked 2-3 family reunions in the Hotel that weekend. Which ment a lot more people then most times. and during one of my shuttle rides I had just come back from taking a lot of photos in downtown Atlanta when I got back on the bus the driver is to ask if anyone wants any water or a soda they have ice down drinks on the buses. And he didn't ask so I stood up and pulled out an ice cold water. and he said SIR its FULL SERVICE not SELF SERVICE and other guests on the bus laughed at me. I was to tried to say anything but I sat back with my cold water and relaxed. On Saturday night I went down to the restaurant to get some chicken wings to go, I sat at a table for 5 mins before I was helped I ordered my food and like most places I visit by myself. I saw my food come up on to the counter I was 15 feet away from my food but couldn't get it. For my waitress was with a group of 6 guests. I watched my food stay in the counter for about 10 minutes before she came back and brought me my dinner I checked the wings out they were still hot. I paided and gave a 20% tip why I don't know? I get to my room I opened my to go meal and there was no BBQ sauce so I had to go all the way down to FAST LANE on the lower lobby. I asked my waitress for the bbq sauce she said she was sorry I then went and had my now cold chicken dinner. Then Sunday came I had more photos to take Sunday morning and I came back around 2:00pm for my last friend was coming over at 3:00pm when about 2:30pm I noticed all the NEWSPAPERS I bought Yesterday were gone. They were on desk under a painting not on the FLOOR or in the TRASH CAN!!! I then heard a knock on the door my friend had arrived and I told him what happen he walked ot in the hall and up to the MAID my friend had several NEWSPAPERS on his desk and they aren't there she then checked her TRASH and bingo I had my papers back thanks to MY lawyer friend. Then It was Monday 7/31/06 my check out day I didn't have a flight out until 6:30pm I was hoping to have a later check out? I went upstairs to the executive room were I had Oatmeal and rolls and a ginger ale for Breakfast. The morning started out fine until I went and got on the free computer, I was on it no longer then 10 mins when an Old man sitting behind be reading a newspaper I had noticed 5 mins before. As I turned looked ticked off I asked if he needed the computer he said yes I told him why didn't you

Rough Landing (6.24.11) 329 of 365

Rough Landing (6.24.11) 329 of 365

***Today's picture is more about the story than the quality***

Okay, so this was one of the more eventful travel days. I had a 6:30AM flight from Salt Lake City, Utah to Denver, Colorado. I think I was the first one to the airport this morning; in fact, the lights were not even on when I was walking to the terminal (I have the iPhone photo to prove it too). Of course, I was "randomly" selected for additional screening (as I am every time I travel).

So my 6:30 AM flight turned into a 7:15 AM flight when the pilot announced that we had "mechanical issues" that would delay our takeoff. The problem is that I only had one hour in-between my connecting flight & I had to check my bag plane side because we were in a CRJ that could not accommodate my normal carry-on.

We eventually take off and fly to Denver. It was by far the COLDEST flight I have ever been on. Maybe the thermostat was the issue! I could not get any sleep because I was shivering so violently; no blankets available either. I may or may not have tucked my arms into my tee shirt...

So we land in Denver with 25 minutes to spare before my next flight. I immediately de-board and then have to wait for my bag. Take a wild guess who was the last one of 25 people to get their bag (despite having my medallion tag clearly visible)? This guy!

I run up the jetway only to find out that my connecting flight is on the other side of the C terminal. I break into a sprint (wearing flip flops) and barely make it to my connecting flight (last one to board). I do want to call out that at the time I arrived for my flight in SLC, there were not any opens shops to get something to eat for breakfast. Obviously I did not have time to grab food on the way to the connecting flight, so in addition to breaking into a sweat from my sprint - my stomach begun to eat itself.

I had the unfortunately pleasure of sitting next to some high school or college aged kid that had a serious case of lower intestinal issues as well as halitosis. The seat assignment alone made me quickly realize that this was going to be a long flight. I thought about offering gum, but every time he looked in my direction I had to hold my breath for fear of dry heaving.

We taxi out to the runway and start our takeoff. Now I travel a good bit and have a pretty decent feel for when things should/shouldn't happen. It seemed like we were not gaining enough speed and were quickly running out of runway (which is not abnormal for Denver given its altitude and thin air). However, about the time we usually begin to gain some lift, there is a loud pop/explosion and the plane starts shaking violently (think heavy turbulence). The look on everyone's face (including mine) must have been priceless. The problem is that we were so far down the runway that we had no choice but to proceed with the takeoff. We used the entire runway and may or may not have hit the rumble strips at the end - it was hard to tell from all the other shaking going on.

The pilot doesn't say much about the incident after takeoff, in fact, it is not until later in the flight when we are approaching Atlanta that we were informed of the "situation." The pilot comes on and makes an announcement about there being an issue with the landing gear and a solution is being worked out.

We were then told that we would be circling the Atlanta airport until we burned off almost all of our fuel (which took over one hour). We were also told that we would do a fly over so a visual check could be done on the landing gear to determine the issue.

At this point I think some people were getting nervous - I immediately turned on my cell phone (including the cellular connectivity) and typed a message to my wife (just in case). I hated the thought that my last message to my wife would have been about the terrible smells originating from the troll sitting next to me right before takeoff.

Well, after some more circling and clearing of the runways we are told that we are going to go directly in. Brace for Impact!

We come in hard - and as soon as the back gear touches down, the plane begins shaking violently again. Think massive turbulence with the overhead baggage going crazy. I think everyone was holding their breath as you could feel the pilot doing everything he could to slow the plane down (reverse thrusters, breaks, eventually killing the engine, etc.).

We roll to the stop and spontaneous applause breaks out (as well as a collective sigh of relief). Immediately you starting hearing text messages pinging off - obviously I was not the only one with the idea to text their loved ones on our approach.

The pilot then announces that we should not be alarmed by the emergency vehicles approaching the plane, but we would not be able to taxi into the terminal at this time........this is where today's picture comes into play.

Apparently we blew or lost a tire(s) during takeoff. After the emergency crew cleared

The Luxor Hotel Entrance

The Luxor Hotel Entrance

The Luxor Hotel is a hotel casino located on the famed Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, and was one of the resort city's first fully-themed megaresorts. Ground was broken for the Luxor in 1991, the same year that construction began on the Treasure Island and the current MGM Grand. It has an Ancient Egyptian motif and contains a total of 4,407 rooms lining the interior walls of a hollow pyramid and contained within two twin ziggurat towers. It opened on October 15, 1993.

It's located on the southern end of the Las Vegas Strip, opposite McCarran International Airport. The resort is flanked by the Mandalay Bay to the south and by the Excalibur to the north; all three are connected by free express and local trams. All three properties were built by Mandalay Resort Group, formerly known as Circus Circus Enterprises. In June 2004, the Mandalay Resort Group was purchased by MGM Mirage, adding this hotel to its vast array of properties on the "Strip". It can be considered the "middle child" of Mandalay's south strip properties, both in terms of age (it opened in 1993; the Excalibur opened in 1990, while Mandalay Bay opened in 1999) and level of luxury.

The Luxor is among the most recognizable hotels on the strip because of its striking design. Designed by renowned hotel architect Veldon Simpson, the main portion of the hotel is a 350-foot-high (106 meters), 30-story pyramid of black glass (in comparison, the Great Pyramid of Giza tops out at 450 ft, or 137 m). The hotel is marked by a large obelisk with the name of the property in lighted letters, while the porte-cochere travels underneath a massive recreation of the Great Sphinx of Giza.

The tip of the pyramid contains a fixed-position spotlight that points directly upward – it is the brightest beam in the world, and is visible from anywhere in the Las Vegas valley at night, and can be seen at flight level from above Los Angeles, California, over 275 miles (440 km) away. In the spring, the bright light attracts huge numbers of moths into the light beam, creating a phenomenon that has been likened to snow. The beam is currently powered by 39 Xenon lamps operating at 7 kilowatts each at an hourly operating cost of $53 (lamps, repairs, and electricity costs). The beam's output is rated at 41.5 gigacandela. Ironically, because the desert air is so clean and dry there is little to deflect the light, the beam's true brightness is lost to all observers except for unfortunate airline pilots flying overhead.

The guest rooms are situated on the outer walls of the pyramid and are reached by riding in so-called "inclinators" that travel along the inner surface of the pyramid at a 39-degree angle. Open hallways leading to the rooms overlook the atrium, which is the largest in the world at 29 million cubic feet (820,000 m?).

The resort has been home to some very popular entertainment attractions in Las Vegas. The main level featured the nightclub, RA, which closed indefinitely on July 22, 2006. From 2000 to 2005, the Luxor Theatre was the home of the enormously popular performance-art show Blue Man Group, which has since moved to The Venetian. On February 15, 2006, the main theatre became the home of the musical Hairspray. The final Hairspray show was on June 11, 2006. No replacement show for the theatre has yet been named. The second level, meanwhile, features additional attractions. An IMAX theatre (the first such theatre in Las Vegas, according to the hotel, which it is not; in 1979, Caesars Palace opened an Omnimax Theater, the precursor to IMAX[1]) shows a rotating selection of films; there is also an IMAX motion simulator ride hosting a variety of rides, including "In Search of the Obelisk," which takes participants into a virtual archeological dig and ReBoot, based on the animated series. The "Atrium Showroom" is home to multiple shows: "Fantasy" (a topless revue), comedian Carrot Top, and the movie/attraction "Pirates 4D". The attractions level also features the "King Tut Museum", an authentic replica of the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The reproduction is based directly on the descriptions of the tomb recorded by Howard Carter, who discovered it in 1922.

The hotel is named after the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes) in Egypt, the site of the Valley of the Kings, Karnak and Luxor Temples, and scores of other pharaonic monuments – but no pyramids.

The hotel is commonly viewed as one of the finest examples of 1990s Postmodern architecture, and appeared on the cover of renowned architecture scholar James Steele's book "Architecture Today".

A portion of the 1998 music video Gettin' Jiggy Wit It by Will Smith was shot in the foyer of the hotel.

The use of radio distribution equipment that enhances, extends or amplifies a wireless signal may be prohibited without the consent of the wireless carrier upon whose network such equipment will be used. You should consult with your carrier before purchasing such equipment to use with that carrier’s service.

If you experience dropped calls and poor cell phone signal quality in your car, home or office then the Wilson MobilePro Cell Phone Signal Booster kit is the solution. Increasing your cell phone's power by as much as 10 times, the Wilson MobilePro significantly improves the performance of your cellular and data devices by increasing the power output of your cell phone signal where you are experiencing a weak signal. Designed for portability and mobility the MobilePro includes several power adapters, and is easily moved from your vehicle to home, hotel, airport, and office creating an improved cellular signal.

Wilson MobilePro
With the MobilePro, you'll experience fewer dropped calls. View larger.
It's All About Power
The primary cause of dropped calls is low signal output power from the cell phone to the cell tower, which limits the phone's ability to communicate with the tower. A typical cell phone provides merely one-fifth of a watt of output power. To address this problem, the amplifier and the included magnet mount antenna work together to increase the phone's output power by as much as 10 times over using just the phone alone.
Enjoy Premium Reception and Fewer Dropped Calls
Living or working in an area with limited cell phone coverage, which is caused by natural and man-made obstructions or by living out of range from a cell phone tower, you know how frustrating weak reception can be. By increasing the power output of your cell phone signal, the Wilson MobilePro helps eliminate most of the signal loss caused by these obstructions. It's important to note, the strongest signal is obtained when the MobilePro is within two feet of your cell phone, laptop or data card. If you sit at a distance greater than two feet, simply set your phone next to the MobilePro booster and use a Bluetooth headset.
The MobilePro comes with several power options, including a vehicle cigarette lighter adapter, a USB power cable, and a standard five-volt AC/DC adapter. The variety of power options ensures that you'll continue to have a boosted signal whether you're driving in your car, traveling with your laptop, or working at your desk. Included with the booster kit is a convenient carrying case that fits neatly inside a briefcase, handbag or suitcase.
Once installed, the MobilePro can simultaneously support multiple cell phones and data cards. You'll experience fewer dropped calls, clearer call quality, and improved data rates--even with 3G technologies.
Installing the MobilePro
Installation is quick and easy; everything you need for installation in a building or car is included in the kit.
Wilson MobilePro
Installation in a building takes just a few minutes. View larger.
In a Building
To install, simply attach the suction-cup window bracket to the inside of the window and place the magnet mount antenna on the bracket. Connect the magnet mount antenna to the amplifier. Power the amplifier by using the USB power cord and plugging it into a computer USB port or the standard AC adapter. Place the MobilePro within 12 inches of your phone, laptop, or data card to receive an improved signal.
In a Car

Plane Prompts Brief Evacuation of White House and Capitol
By DAVID STOUT

WASHINGTON, May 11 - A small plane flew into restricted airspace over the nation's capital today, causing a scare that prompted evacuation of the Capitol building, the White House, the Supreme Court and other government sites.

The midday episode lasted barely a quarter-hour, and the errant pilot was quickly shooed away by two F-16 jet fighters that scrambled from nearby Andrews Air Force Base after the small plane was detected shortly before noon. But for those brief minutes there was a palpable sense of fear here as people recalled the terror of the day in 2001 when a hijacked airliner flew into the Pentagon, killing 189 people.

The single-engine Cessna that set off today's widespread alarm was first detected 15 miles away, just on the edge of the restricted airspace, as it headed toward the Capitol and the White House, the chief White House spokesman, Scott McClellan, said at a briefing soon after the incident.

Mr. McClellan said the pilot did not respond to repeated attempts to communicate with him. The craft, tracked by jet fighters, ultimately came within three miles of the White House before veering west and away from the restricted area, Mr. McClellan said.

President Bush was bicycling in Maryland at the time. But Vice President Dick Cheney, who was at the White House, was quickly escorted to a "secure location," as were First Lady Laura Bush and Nancy Reagan, who was visiting, Mr. McClellan said.

Several Congressional hearings were suspended as people streamed out of the Capitol Building, with Congressional leaders being hustled into armored vehicles. Scores of people were simultaneously evacuated at the White House, at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, under clear blue skies as the Secret Service briefly went on its highest-alert status. (The Pentagon, across the Potomac River in Arlington, Va., was not evacuated.)

After veering away from the White House, the Cessna was escorted by military aircraft to an airport in nearby Frederick, Md., where it put down. Two men were taken into custody at the airport, the Capitol police chief, Terry Gainer, said at a news briefing. Chief Gainer said preliminary information indicated that the men had taken the plane without permission from an airport in Lancaster County, Pa. But that was contradicted by comments to reporters made by people in Pennsylvania who said they knew the pilots.

An online database of the Federal Aviation Administration lists the plane bearing the registration number of the aircraft shown on television as a Cessna 150 registered to the Vintage Aero Club in Smoketown, in southeastern Pennsylvania. That model aircraft typically carries only one or two people, including the pilot.

The Associated Press described the club as a group of people who fly from the Smoketown Airport, in Lancaster County. The news agency reported that a former club member, John E. Henderson, had said that the plane was to be flown to a North Carolina airshow by Jim Sheaffer of Lititz, Pa., and a student pilot, Troy Martin of Akron, Pa.

Mr. Martin's wife, Jill, said the two men left late this morning for Lumberton, The A.P. said.

"Troy was discussing with me last night after they made their flight plans all about the no-fly zones and how they were going to avoid them," she said in an interview with the news agency. "He said they were going to fly between two different restricted areas."

As the plane sat on a runway in Frederick, it was dwarfed by a military helicopter that landed a short distance away from it. Later, television pictures showed the Cessna being towed away and a man in shorts being led to a police cruiser in handcuffs.

Secret Service officials and other law enforcement officers were questioning the pilot, who had not yet been identified and whose motives were not immediately known, Mr. McClellan said.

One tantalizing question is how close the Cessna may have come to being shot down. Mr. McClellan said there were "protocols in place" to fire at it, if necessary, "but I'm not sure it ever came to that point." Asked who had the authority to order that the plane be shot down, Mr. McClellan declined to be specific, except to say that President Bush was aware of the episode as it unfolded.

Pilots accidentally enter restricted airspace over Washington from time to time, generally without this level of response. But since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the prospect of an errant plane being shot down is not far-fetched. If, as Mr. McClellan said, the Cessna was within three miles of the White House today, it could easily have been within a minute or so's flying time of the mansion.

Today's incident, unsettling as it was, lasted just 15 minutes - from 11:59 a

Status Factory, a pop up exhibit presented by Opera Gallery and Ron English, traced English's most amibitious themes and well-known character motifs in a "camo-arcadian warholian times square circus sideshow mash-up barely contained by the silver walls at 382 West Broadway" from September 12 to October 30, 2010. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie "Supersize Me," and Abraham Obama, the explosive fusion of America's 16th and 44th Presidents.

Passengers

While helping a handful of plane crash survivors cope with their grief, young psychologist Claire Summers (2008 Best Actress, Oscar® nominee Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married) begins to uncover conflicting accounts of the accident. At first, Claire believes that trauma is behind her patients' wildly different stories - until the survivors mysteriously begin disappearing one by one. Now Eric (Patrick Wilson, Lakeview Terrace), a surviving passenger she has grown dangerously close to, may hold the key to unlocking the truth about the tragic incident in this shocking psychological thriller.

Academy Award nominee Anne Hathaway leads an impressive cast in this supernatural-tinged thriller from director Rodrigo Garcia (Things You Can Tell By Just Looking at Her). Hathaway is typically fine as a novice therapist assigned to the survivors of a horrific plane crash; all are traumatized save one (Patrick Wilson, Watchmen), who exudes a newfound joie de vivre as well as a serious yen for Hathaway. As the mismatched pair grows closer, the survivors begin to disappear, spurring Hathaway into an investigation into what exactly transpired during the doomed flight. Though the two leads are a photogenic pair, they’re continually underserved by the script, which serves up an alarming array of red herrings and false steps; Garcia does his best to impart the same sort of layered, multi-character structure to Passengers he brought to his arthouse dramas like Nine Lives, but the material is too thin and derivative to afford him much traction. The terrific supporting cast, which includes Andre Braugher, Dianne Wiest, Clea Duvall, David Morse, and, appropriately enough, William B. Davis--The X-Files’ Cancer Man--is also left stranded by the script. --Paul Gaita

Last night Co Flight 3407 Crashed into a New York Suburbian Home - All 49 passengers and crew were killed along with 1 person in the home. Many of you know how close and dear this is to my Heart. Please take a moment and say a prayer for the families who have been affected. This is a horrible tragedy. A note by the president of my company today was put out to us all and her words I would like to pass on..."Let us all take a moment to tell those that we love how much they mean to us. A horrible tragedy like this puts life's minor issues into perspective"
God bless you all and bless the familes affected with the strength they will now need....

Plane Into Home

Smoke rises from a burning plane after it crashed into a house in Clarence Center, N.Y., Thursday Feb. 12, 2009. New York state police say a Continental Flight 3407 from Newark, N.J., a 50-passenger commuter plane, has crashed into a home in suburban Buffalo. Clarence emergency control director Dave Bissonet says there have been "multiple fatalities" after a Continental Express plane with 48 people aboard crashed into a suburban Buffalo home and erupted in flames. Bissonet says the crash killed at least one person on the ground and an unknown number of people on the plane. State Trooper John Manthey says the plane hit a house in Clarence around 10:10 p.m. Thursday. (AP Photo/David Duprey)

Passengers

Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression in Kansas, Passengers presents two stories of love and loss. It follows the equally bleak and hopeful young lives of two couples, Holden & Anna and Jonathan & Cora, and chronicles the often unassociated consequences of committing oneself to the course of passion. Touching upon tangential forces that can affect liaisons, including religion, socioeconomic status, family relations, and physical proximity, Passengers poignantly exposes the faults of adolescent and pressure-filled relationships. How can someone truly in love become tied to lust, betrayal, indecision, or the refusal to compromise? At the core remains the story's continuous message: as a dry, poor, desperate country is bound to recover with enough effort and fidelity, so, too, are devoted lovers. Wonderfully inspiring and, at times, devastatingly sad, Passengers captures four lives unraveled and strengthened by an affection as needed as a panacea to the fiscal crisis. After all, fortune may only lead you to the tracks. Persistence and toil represent the authenticity of the ride.

EPISODES OF WWII: HMAS KAPUNDA Oerlikon gunners again, and a word about the RAAF and 'Bomb Alley - Photo Derek Sim [1919-2004] courtesy Graeme Andrews.

4377. During the Defence of Australia between 1942 and 1945, ships plied a stretch of water across the 'Top End' of the country known as 'Bomb Alley'. It extended from Darwin in the north west across the Arafura Sea to Thursday Island, just off the tip of Cape York in the north east - roughly 800 kms of open water in which ships could be subject to Japanese air attacks from large bases on occupied New Britain and Timor at any time.

The point, mentioned in the last entry, is that for the small ships fighting the coastal wars around New Guinea and northern Australia, the concepts of air superiority and air cover were things that barely existed.

Even when the famous Supermarine Spitfires finally arrived in Australian squadrons, they - like other western fighter aicraft, - were found to be vulnerable to the highly manoeuvrable Zeros in dog fights, and often came off second best. Darwin Air Wing Commander Clive Caldwell, the country's most famous fighter ace, had specifically ordered his squadrons and pilots not to engage the Zeros in dogfights, but only attack them in high-powered passes from above, and then roll away to repeat that tactic [see story on the Darwin Raid 54 disaster below] .

This is not meant to be a criticism of the Royal Australian Air Force, the Australian force that experienced the most dramatic growth during WWII. But it had its own strategic beliefs, and aims. From negligible beginnings in 1939 it ended up more than three times the size of the Royal Australian Navy in manpower terms at the end of WWII [131,662 to 39,650]. On August 15, 1945, the RAAF was the fourth largest air force in the world, with 3,187 frontline aircraft.

It also made a massive contribution to the Royal Air Force. This is from the official Royal Australian Air Force website ...

'...'The duration of World War II saw 15,746 RAAF pilots, navigators, wireless operators, gunners and engineers [were] sent to British squadrons and 11,641 to Australian squadrons. These men exemplified themselves in every major campaign front from the Battle of France, Battle of Britain, Normandy invasion, Egypt, the Middle East, Germany, Battle of the Atlantic, the defence of Malta, liberation of Italy, the Battles of the Coral and Bismarck Seas, Defence of Australia, to fighting in India, Burma, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Pacific.

When the armistice with Japan was signed on 15 August 1945, the RAAF in the Pacific had a total strength of 131,662 personnel and 3,187 front line aircraft. First Tactical Air Force, the major operational formation, had grown to 18,894 men in April 1945 and operated 20 operational squadrons. In addition to its execution of numerous air operations, the RAAF had also pioneered the development and operation of radar and operated its own shipping in the South West Pacific Area. The RAAF legacy of the Second World War is a proud one, with it now the world's 4th largest Air Force.'

Notice how low the Defence of Australia falls on that list - and It was not all 'Tally Ho Boys,' and plain sailing, anyway. In particular, with so many men abroad in Britain's Bomber Commander and other RAF squadrons, it appears the RAAF suffered some lack of experienced pilots at home, and in particularly in training in defensive tactics. We make no claim to expertise in this, none at all, but in terms of exploding some myths, we found an an extended article by Clive Caldwell's biographer, Kristen Alexander, on the RAAF's disaster during the 54th Japanese bombing raid on Darwin on May 2, 1943, to be truly eye-opening. One could hear boyhood illusions popping about the Spitfire - a short range aircraft inexplicably flown without drop tanks being available in Australia, that most long distance of almost any nation.

The article was called 'The day the planes "all fell into the sea": Darwin Raid 54-2 May 1943' and there is a link to the full piece below. A brief extract on the interesting question of Spitfire versus Zero ...

'....One fighter technique favoured by the Allied pilots with experience from North Africa and Europe, was dog fighting. Pilots such as Caldwell, Goldsmith and Bisley had gained considerable skill and success with this against the Germans. Dog fighting was practiced at the operational training units and the Spitfire pilots also included dog fighting in their practice flights between the raids. But as for dog fighting against the Zero, the Spitfire had its limitations, as did every other Western fighter design.

The Spitfire was superior to the Zero in most instances, but it was less manoeuvrable at low speeds. Taking advantage of the Zero's manoeuvrability advantage at lower speeds, Zero pilots favoured dog fighting. Early in the piece, it became known that dog fighting with Zeros was unwise. There had already been evidence from RAAF and American experience that dog fighting was not a successful tactic to use against the Japanese. Indeed, the 49th

Ilyushin IL-2 M.3 Sturmovik 1/72nd scale

Ilyushin IL-2 M.3 Sturmovik 1/72nd scale

The inspiration for a great PC flight-combat Sim, Il-2 "Sturmovik" - Rugged, tough, and BIG for a single engined aircraft, the Sturmovik became the most famous air-warrior of the USSR during the 1941-45 conflict with the Germans.

A total of 36,163 were produced (the 3rd most produced aircraft OF ALL TIME) - Stalin once said, "They are as essential to the Red Army as air and bread."

It was a supreme ground-attack workhorse, the 2M and later versions were two-seaters, with a very well-armoured engine/cockpit enclosure. Cannon, bombs and rockets made it a formidable foe, and an effective tank-buster, and it could absorb a lot of punishment - ground-fire and fighter attention, and still fly on!

Airfix 1/72nd scale kit (Japanese edition, 1980) purchased on eBay

Why didn't Russian 'planes have stars on the upper wing surfaces - they'd make prettier models if they did!! :-).... and I do spell this "Shturmovik" sometimes to emphasise the "Sh" sound at the start when giving it the full-on Russian pronunciation!
