Commodore Stephen Decatur

Commodore Stephen Decatur

H St. on the NW corner of Layfayette Square NW

Commodore Stephen Decatur, Jr. (January 5, 1779 – March 22, 1820) was an American naval officer notable for his heroism in actions at Tripoli, Libya in the Barbary Wars and in the War of 1812.

He was born in Sinepuxent, Maryland and attended the Abercrombie School in Philadelphia at Dr. Abercrombie's Academy with future naval heroes Richard Somers and Charles Stewart. He was appointed midshipman in the Navy on April 30, 1798, serving on USS United States. His father, Stephen Decatur, Sr., was also a Naval officer, having commanded several ships. Another Stephen Decatur (1815–76) claimed to be his nephew and was an incorporator of Decatur, Nebraska.

He married Miss Susan Wheeler, the daughter of the Mayor of Norfolk, Virginia, on March 8, 1806. In 1818, in Washington, D.C., he built a house designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The house, now a museum, was located on President's Square (Lafayette Square).

Decatur is famed for his toast: "Our country! In her intercourse with foreign nations may she always be in the right; but our country, right or wrong."

In 1820, Commodore James Barron challenged Decatur to a duel, relating in part to comments Decatur had made over what he considered Barron's poor conduct in the "Chesapeake-Leopard Affair" of 1807. The two officers fought in Bladensburg, Maryland, on 22 March 1820. Decatur was mortally wounded and died shortly afterwards. He died childless. Though he left his widow $75,000 dollars (a considerable sum in 1820), she died penniless in 1860.

He is said to have fired upon the Jersey Devil in front of guests, who were amazed to see the creature remain unharmed.

"Decatur's Conflict with the Algerine at Tripoli. Reuben James Interposing His Head to Save the Life of His Commander." Copy of engraving by Alonzo Chappel, August, 1804Active during the undeclared war with France, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1799. Given command of the brig Argus in 1803, he took it to the Mediterranean for service in the First Barbary War against Tripoli. Once in the combat zone, Lieutenant Decatur commanded the schooner Enterprise and, on 23 December 1803, captured the enemy ketch Mastico. That vessel, taken into the U.S. Navy under the name Intrepid, was used by Decatur on 16 February 1804 to execute a night raid into Tripoli harbor to destroy the former U.S. frigate Philadelphia, which had been captured after running aground at the end of October 1803. Admiral Lord Nelson is said to have called this "the most bold and daring act of the age."

This daring and extremely successful operation made Lieutenant Decatur an immediate national hero, a status that was enhanced by his courageous conduct during the 3 August 1804 bombardment of Tripoli. In that action, he led his men in hand-to-hand fighting while boarding and capturing an enemy gunboat. Decatur was subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain, and over the next eight years had command of several frigates.

On October 25, 1812, while commanding United States, he captured HMS Macedonian. In 1814 he flew a pennant as Commodore commanding USS President and three smaller vessels in the West Indies. The day after setting sail from New York, he encountered the British West Indies Squadron January 15, 1815, and was forced to surrender the frigate President after a fierce fight.

In May 1815, Commodore Decatur sailed his squadron to the Mediterranean Sea to conduct the Second Barbary War, which put an end to the international practice of paying tribute to pirate states. For this campaign he became known as "the Conqueror of the Barbary Pirates."

Between 1816 and 1820, Decatur served as a Navy Commissioner.

Five U.S. Navy ships have been named USS Decatur in his honor, along with numerous locations. Numerous schools also bear his name.

An engraved portrait of Decatur appears on U.S. paper money on series 1886 20.00 silver certificates.

Forty-six communities in the United States have been named after Stephen Decatur, including:
Decatur, Alabama
Decatur, Illinois
Decatur, Texas
Decatur, Georgia
Decatur Township, Indiana

Miss-is-a-misoi The name “Stink wood” was given because of the reputed objectionable smell of the smoke; anyone who collected wood of this species for a tipi fire was an object of derision... (cont'd

Blackfoot: Miss-is-a-misoi (stink wood)
"The name “Stink wood” was given because of the reputed objectionable smell of the smoke; anyone who collected wood of this species for a tipi fire was an object of derision. The Blackfoot explained the objectionable smell of the smoke as follows: “Old Man lay down after telling Little Brown-eye [his anus] to keep watch over some uneaten toasted gophers. Soon Little Brown-eye sounded a warning [flatus] but there was only a crow on a nearby tree. Then a Lynx came along and again Little Brown-eye sounded a warning. But Old Man was sound asleep and, although Little Brown-eye roared away, he refused to wake up. The Lynx ate all the gophers. When Old Man awoke, he was angry with Little Brown-eye because it had let a lynx eat all the meat and had not awakened him. So Old Man took a stick of a kind of Willow and rubbed it into Little Brown-eye and, ever since, this willow has smelled like human excrement and has been known as 'Stink Wood’."

Elaegnus comutata (Wolf-willow, Silver-berry) "the flowers produce strong sweetish scent, readily detectable from hundreds of meters downwind."

  • This is for "Mint State" (the grade) and "70" (the numerical designation of that grade). A perfect coin! Even with 5X magnification there are no marks, hairlines or luster breaks in evidence. The luster is vibrant, the strike is razor-sharp, and the eye appeal is the ultimate.

1876 $10.00 PCGS AU53 CAC

1876 $10.00 PCGS AU53 CAC

Mintage: 732

Secure Plus Holder. One of 732 business strikes produced. There are just four Liberty Head eagles that have mintages below 1,000: the 1873, the ultra-rare 1875, the 1876 and the 1877. Of the three, the 1876 trails the first two on the list but it is considerably scarcer than the 1877. I think there are around three dozen known at most with the majority in the EF40 to AU50 range. This example is, as usual, semi-prooflike with scattered abrasions seen in the fields. I have seen or sold nearly all of the higher grade 1876 eagles and this piece compares favorably with most of them. In recent times, the only better example I can recall seeing was Stacks 6/09: 1056, graded AU55 by PCGS, that sold for a strong $32,200. There are auction records of over $10,000 for EF and low-end AU 1876 eagles dating back to the 1990's. I have noticed in the last year or so that collectors are finally paying attention to super low-mintage coins like this and the level of interest (and prices) is clearly on the upswing.

1846-O $2.50 PCGS AU58

1846-O $2.50 PCGS AU58

Mintage: 62,000

I've probably handled over half of the 1846-O quarter eagles graded AU58 by PCGS and I'd have to say that this is among the nicest. It is somewhat weakly struck as is typical but the luster is virtually complete and the surfaces have never been scrubbed or enhanced. The population figures for this date are misleading as many have been resubmitted and others are inferior for the grade. I regard a properly graded AU58 as a scarce issue and with the jump up to the next grade being a high multiple (an MS61 will cost you more than double the price) a choice slider is an excellent value for most collectors.

St Nicholas' Cemetery Brashov - Saint Paul

St Nicholas' Cemetery Brashov - Saint Paul

THE VISION OF SAINT PAUL
Apocryphal account
1. At what time was this revelation made? In the consulship of Theodosius Augustus the younger and Cynegius, a certain nobleman then living in Tharsus, in the house which was that of Saint Paul, an angel appearing in the night revealed to him, saying that he should open the foundations of the house and should publish what he found, but he thought that these things were dreams.

2. But the angel coming for the third time beat him and forced him to open the foundation. And digging he found a marble box, inscribed on the sides; there was the revelation of Saint Paul, and his shoes in which he walked teaching the word of God. But he feared to open that box and brought it to the judge; when he had received it, the judge, because it was sealed with lead, sent it to the emperor Theodosius, fearing in case it might be something else; which when he had received the emperor opened it, and found the revelation of Saint Paul; a copy of it he sent to Jerusalem, and retained the original himself.

3. While I was in the body in which I was snatched up to the third heaven, the word of the Lord came to me saying: speak to the people: until when will you transgress, and heap sin upon sin, and tempt the Lord who made you? You are the sons of God, doing the works of the devil in the faith of Christ, on account of the impediments of the world. Remember therefore and know that while every creature serves God, the human race alone sins.

4. For indeed the sun, the great light, often addressed the Lord saying: Lord God Almighty, I look out upon the impieties and injustices of men; permit me and I shall do to them what are my powers, that they may know that you are God alone. And there came a voice saying to him: I know all these things, for my eye sees and ear hears, but my patience bears them until they shall be converted and repent. But if they do not return to me I will judge them all.

5. For sometimes the moon and stars addressed the Lord saying: Lord God Almighty, to us you have given the power of the night; till when shall we look down upon the impieties and fornications and homicides done by the sons of men? Permit us to do to them according to our powers, that they may know that you are God alone. And there came a voice to them saying: I know all these things, and my eye looks forth and ear hears, but my patience bears with them until they shall be converted and repent. But if they do not return to me I will judge them.

6. And frequently also the sea eed saying: Lord God Almighty, men have defiled your holy name in me; permit me to arise and cover every wood and orchard and the whole world, until I blot out all the sons of men from before your face, that they may know that you are God alone. And the voice came again and said: I know all things; my eye sees everything, and my ear hears, but my patience bears with them until they be converted and repent. But if they do not return, I will judge them. Sometimes the waters also spoke against the sins of men saying: Lord God Almighty, all the sons of men have defiled your holy name. And there came a voice saying: I know all things before they come to pass, for my eye sees and my ear hears all things, but my patience bears with them until they be converted. But if not I will judge them. Frequently also the earth too eed to the Lord against the sons of men saying: Lord God Almighty, I above every other creature of your am harmed, supporting the fornications, adulteries, homicides, thefts, perjuries and magic and ill-doings of men and all the evil they do, so that the father rises up against the son, and the son upon the father, the alien against the alien, so that each one defiles his neighbour's wife. The father ascends upon the bed of his own son, and the son likewise ascends the couch of his own father; and in all these evils, they who offer above every creature, desiring not to show my power to myself, and my fruits to the sons of men. Permit me and I will destroy the virtue of my fruits. And there came a voice and said: I know all things, and there is none who can hide himself from his sin. Moreover I know their impieties, but my holiness suffers them until they be converted and repent. But if they do not return to me I will judge them.

7. Behold, you sons of men, the creature is subject to God, but the human race alone sins. For this reason, therefore, you sons of men, bless the Lord God unceasingly, every hour and every day: but more especially when the sun has set: for at that hour all the angels proceed to the Lord to worship him and to present the works of men, which every man has worked from the morning till the evening, whether good or evil. And there is a certain angel who proceeds rejoicing concerning the man in whom he dwells. When therefore the sun has set in the first hour of night, in the same hour the angel of every people and every man and woman, who protect and preserve them, because man

Dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem Cúpula de La Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro Jerusalén

Dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem Cúpula de La Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro Jerusalén

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, also called the Church of the Resurrection (Jerusalem).
The site is venerated by Christians as Golgotha, (the Hill of Calvary), where the New Testament says that Jesus was crucified, and it is also said to contain the place where Jesus was buried (the sepulchre).
Emperor Constantine I ordered in 325/326 that the former temple of Venus, therein located, be demolished to build a church on the site. His mother, Helena involved herself in the excavations and construction. During the excavation, Helena is alleged to have rediscovered the True Cross, and a tomb, the alleged tomb of Jesus.
The Church has been seriously damaged, destroyed and then rebuilt, renovated or restored in different periods. The initial rebuilt church site was taken from the Fatimids (who had recently taken it from the Abassids) by the Knights of the First Crusade on 15 July 1099.
The current dome dates from 1870, although it was restored during 1994–1997 and it is supposed to cover the old Golgotha.

Mt Wilson and the San Miguel Mountains

Mt Wilson and the San Miguel Mountains

Taken on our January roadtrip, this view of Mt Wilson is from an overlook on the road to Mesa Verde. Mt Wilson is a fourteen thousand foot mountain peak in Colorado. It is located in the Lizard Head Wilderness 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Telluride and west of Durango on US 160. It is the highest peak in the San Miguel Mountains, a subrange of the San Juan Mountains. The peak was named for A. D. Wilson, a topographer with the Hayden Survey. He was in the first ascent party on September 13, 1874.

Mount Wilson, and the rest of the San Miguel Mountains, are made up of a large, irregular tertiary igneous intrusion.

The Mount Wilson region became the site of intense mining activity, particularly for silver, in the early 1880s. The most famous of these mines was the Silver Pick Mine.

Mount Wilson is most recognizable as a staple icon on many Coors beer products.

Storm Peak and Silverton, CO (2)

Storm Peak and Silverton, CO (2)

The historic town of Silverton sits at an elevation of 9,300 feet above sea level, in the rugged San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. The Animas River flows through town on its way to Durango, and the famous Million Dollar Highway provides the only year-round access to town.

The area was opened to settlement and mining by a treaty with the Ute tribe in 1874, and at the peak of its silver mining activity, the town boasted a population in the thousands.

Mining has since ceased in the area, and the population is now around 531. Tourism is now the primary source of revenue for Silverton.

Hot and dry - but a Mojito made with fresh crushed mint from the Hotel Havana garden and hand shaved ice made it quite tolerable. The slight smell of Cigarettes and cigars in the breeze actually adds to the atmosphere which is all about martinis, hats, kicking back, and all things Cuban. On a whim, I wore my tan linen pants, white cuban shirt, sandals and a silver 1972 Timex Mercury wrist watch with a Twist-O-Flex metal band. So Ricky Ricardo! The guys in these photos were great to let me shoot a few photos - just had to capture the moment.

However, Taoist philosophy generally discounts good/bad distinctions and other dichotomous moral judgments, in preference to the idea of balance .
