(15) geohouse primary floor plan level 1 The proposed design concept for Geo-House, is a school in queue with geometric design concepts. This school, catering to children with autism and dyslexia, aims to promote their growth and development, in an environment that accepts their shortcomings and strives to overcome them. The idea of geometric elements onto the school is in reaction to the existing site, a striking combination of rectilinear and ‘U’ shaped structures that allow for great potential with the space. This concept will also integrate the mainstream students with the physically/intellectually impaired. The autistic children can add it into their Adaptive Daily living course. As a result, children will understand values of nature and its significance in today’s world. CONCRETE FLOOR GRINDING : FLOOR GRINDING
Concrete Floor Grinding : Drowning Pool Let The Bodies Hit The Floor : Floor Covering Retail. Concrete Floor Grinding
Replacement Concrete Floor Diamond Grinding Blocks for Edco, Stow and General Equipment Floor Grinders, 6 Pack This listing is for a set of 6 diamond grinding blocks for use on Edco, General Tool, and Stow floor grinders. This listing would accommodate a dual head grinder. These blocks are manufactured with five diamond segments per block for maximum performance and extended life. Our blocks utilize a floating grinding plate that rests on two heavy duty springs allowing just enough play for the diamond segments to conform to inconsistencies in the grinding surface. All five premium diamond segments are welded the full length of the mounting plate to prevent the diamond segments from snapping off when they encounter a drain or other tough spots. Diamond blocks are used to remove surface imperfections in concrete, grind terrazzo, remove epoxy, and level high spots. These diamond blocks are perfect for removing resins and exposing fresh concrete before staining or reapplying coatings. Diamond blocks grind five times faster than abrasive stones and typically last 10,000-30,000 square feet. Depending on several variables such as depth of grind and age of concrete. Edco designed the original Dyma-Serts with 4 segments. While adding segments seems like the best way to improve the life of this product you also need to consider the effect the additional segments have on the grinding performance. When needing to aggressively tear through overcoats and built up mastics blocks utilizing too many segments decrease the overall pressure applied to each individual segment. This will cause the diamond segments to clog and and work harder to penetrate overcoats. We have offset the additional segment on our blocks with a lower grit diamond (24/30 grit) this has proven to be the best of both worlds. Longer life and a very aggressive bite. It is recommended rotating the diamond blocks a few times throughout their life to ensure even wear. Each set comes with our new plastic wedges. Questions? GA-16/460 This image is from the GM Leeds Plant Data Processing Center. For details of my walk-through, read below. This is a General Automation GA-16/460 - a mainframe system, vintage 1980's, worth a cool million dollars (with accoutrements) at the time it was purchased. This, and ALL of the rest of GM's computers and data center equipment, were simply abandoned when GM left the plant in 1988. Vandals broke in at some point, and tossed the room, stealing the floor tiles and much of the copper. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Recently, I was given a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shoot, unescorted and virtually unrestricted, within the locked areas of the old General Motors Leeds Plant for one hour. These areas have remained virtually untouched since GM padlocked the plant and strolled out of KC (about 20 years ago). When they left, they simply walked away from the building. They left cars on the assembly line, the multi-million dollar computer systems, a brand-new paint shop that cost 20 million dollars - the list goes on and on. Walking around some of these areas is like walking through a ghost ship. Many of the areas I walked through were completely unlit, except for my flashlight. The only way to get any images in some of these areas was to use my flash. I tried to reduce the glare, reflections and harsh shadows when I shot the images, but I only had an hour to shoot, and I knew I would not likely get the opportunity again, so I shot fast and furious. Disco Dance (The American Dance Floor) Disco is a dance and musical style that still influences these art forms today. Many think that disco "died" completely after the 1970s drew to a close, but in actuality people continued dancing in the clubs after the very word "disco" became an anathema. Disco Dance explains why disco was more than just a dance form or a fad, describing many of the clubs—in New York City especially—where the disco subculture thrived. The author examines the origins of disco music, its evolution, and how young people adapted the dance styles of the day to the disco beat, charting how this dance of celebration and rebellion during troubling times became subject to ridicule by the end of the decade. The nice thing about chipboard is that it's firmer and thicker than Bristol board, meaning that it's not only a lot easier to build with (especially when gluing on the short dimension), it's better-suited to representing actual buildings, since walls and floors have thickness. At 1/8 scale (that is, one-eighth inch in model equals one foot in our imagination of the "real" building), a 1/16"-thick piece of chipboard is 6" thick in scale...more or less the thickness of stud wall construction in 2x4s. Two pieces layered together is a foot thick, more or less the thickness of a floor/ceiling. This model (although not this photo so much) is intended to showcase the main driving ideas of the final design: 1) Transition in massing from two-story building (to match what's across the street in the back) to four-story building (to match what's next door in front). Note that a grade change of +9' from back to front means that an entire story can be sunken below the sidewalk in front. The transition in massing not only serves the neighborhood context, it also makes possible a distinct, exterior-visible space recognizable as a separate apartment for Grandpa, and a series of exterior terraces serving different functions and setting up the required extra staircase for fire egress. 2) Massive cuts into public floor space in the interior to enable light from a top-story sunroom (and a skylight) to reach diagonally all the way to the basement library. This is more feasible on our site than others, simply because the square footage to start out with is absolutely massive, far greater than that required by the program. (One of the guest judges was repeatedly surprised that all of us filled up the entire site, rather than simply having less building, given all the surplus space.) The circulation around and up through these cuts also begins to organize program, with formal and public functions (library, living room, dining room, sunroom, guest bedroom) directly accessible off the main staircase; private bedrooms and the kitchen require turning off to the side from the landings. At final review, the main thrust of the commentary was that, aside from the massive sectional moments in the middle (described, not positively, as an "atrium"), there's nothing at all going on sectionally: all the bedrooms and other spaces outside of the big open area have identical heights and similar volumes. Guest judge Marshall suggested taking my contextual cues one step further, picking up on the sectionally offset buildings across the side street. In theory, much more richness might be found in the cross between their patterns and the transitional pattern I was already working with. I'd briefly considered this avenue before, but found it somewhat hard to work with, and my tentative steps in this direction had been considered "fussy" by Jackie. But I think the proposition has merit and the stack-of-pancakes section is undoubtedly a problem. You can always, of course, make the Fallingwater argument. The bedrooms at Fallingwater are notoriously ungenerous - one is basically a closet large enough for a bed. Wright's idea was that when you have this lovely landscape and amazing public space, why would you want a generous private space? Go mingle with the family! Be with nature! To a large extent I think Wright is correct - but I'm also not as good as Wright, and I think the case could be made that in practice the giant section here might not be all that great. Certainly it'd be rough on the heating bills, south-facing light or no. And while there are some slots of 2- and 3-story space, in general you are either in 1-story pancake space or giant skylight space. A system whose logic and rhythms produced some coherent volumes at medium scales would have been a lovely thing to come upon. Also, while I'm pleased I did in the end make the basement library something that would actually be rather nice to inhabit, the schemes of my classmates that I liked the best were the ones with two- or three-story libraries - Casey's cube and Missy's serial loft design both. Casey's (as usual) was one of the best designs in terms of the way the basic form/facade organizes the program: the library cube is detached from the main pavilion, and elevated one story, creating a carport/patio and giving the collection of rare books a distinct and celebrated position. Meanwhile, the library cube is mirrored by a matching cube of public space in the main building, linking it all together and providing two very nice spaces in the process. Missy's scheme also had the library as a distinct pavilion at one end of the house, but as a thr 12 Round Chipboard Epoxy Button Embellishments with Journaling Tag and Coordinating Floss-Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend 12 VERY BIG Chipboard Epoxy Button Embellishments with a Journaling Tag and Coordinating Floss for all your crafting needs. I am a neighbor who's interested in finding an owner-occupant! :) This is a 1907 Queen Anne-Colonial Revival house in the Old Wilson Historic District in downtown Wilson, NC, about 3 blocks from the courthouse (4 blocks to Imagination Station, 6 blocks to library, 5 blocks to train station...). The good news: It's about 3574 sf, 2 floors, large wrap-around porch, fenced backyard, one neighboring lot is vacant & could possibly be purchased for additional yard, slate roofing and some tin roofing, has nice wood floors throughout, new tile flooring in kitchen, stunning staircase, gorgeous & unusual mantel in living room. As an owner-occupied house, it could be made into a luxury house for probably under $150K total price (my extremely rough estimate!). The bad news: It's a bank-owned foreclosure, was made into a duplex around 1980 (each apartment has a tax value of $77,160), the train tracks are extremely close by, is zoned for Hearne or Vick Elementary School, Toisnot Middle, Fike High, needs roof repairs, some ceiling repairs, all ceilings appear to be dropped to some degree, kitchen will need all new cabinets & appliances, probably needs new HVAC systems (both up & down), front porch needs to be repaired, has had some windows replaced (and poorly so), had vinyl siding applied (and there are some holes in that), I'm sure you'll want to redo the bathrooms (has 2 now, could probably make a stunning bath/closet combo out of the upstairs unit's kitchen), and you'll want to take down the partitioning walls between the two apartments. We have many, many rental units in the area right now & they're not doing so well, so buying this as an investment piece is probably not the wisest decision. You can contact me through this ad but if you're serious about buying, contact the agent: Chesson Agency at 252-291-3600. I talked with Selby Brewer about the property. It's not listed on their website unfortunately. This is an area that has seen a resurgence on owner-occupied properties as well as demolitions lately. Which one will this house be?? Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World A decade after the 9/11 attacks, this groundbreaking book by a preeminent reporter takes readers deep into the struggle within the Muslim world where a growing movement defies and challenges extremism and repudiates Osama bin Laden, his deviant doctrine, and his violent disciples. Robin Wright, an acclaimed foreign correspondent and television commentator, has witnessed the angry birth, violent rise, and globalization of Islamic militancy for almost four decades. In her recent reporting, she discovers a stunning new trend spreading within the Muslim world—the rejection of Islamic extremists. This is a historic evolution, slow to take off but now reaching critical mass. This trend is increasingly visible as clerics publicly repudiate Osama bin Laden, Muslim comedians ridicule militancy altogether, young Muslims rap against guns and bombs, women scholars launch liberation movements using the Koran, Pakistani villagers resist Taliban intrusions, and former Egyptian jihadis debate and then denounce violence. This new jihad, which Wright describes in its many manifestations, has various goals. For some Muslims, it’s about reforming the faith. For others, it’s about reforming political systems. For all, it is about achieving basic rights—on their own terms, not Western ones. What is at its heart is the rejection of venomous ideologies, suicide bombs, plane hijackings, hostage-takings, and mass violence. Muslims, Wright demonstrates, are doing what the West cannot—confronting extremism on its own terms and rescuing the faith from a virulent minority and changing history. (16) Rocks around the pond! Maybe, I have a sensitive nose as red oak stinks to me when the my husband and son work with oak wood flooring and mouldings ... :( smells like the Kraft cheese plant! As my son is building his own house. He laid red oak wood floors throughout the upstairs and the treads of the steps. These WOOD SHAVINGS were from the hand planer tool as the floors were hand scraped for a Tavern wood floor look. There were huge piles of these shavings outside his door. :) "Thanks," PC for participating in the guessing game! My living room Although not much furniture yet, I got the sofa's and floors I wanted! Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges Because of their structural simplicity, bridges tend to be particularly vulnerable to damage and even collapse when subjected to earthquakes or other forms of seismic activity. Recent earthquakes, such as the ones in Kobe, Japan, and Oakland, California, have led to a heightened awareness of seismic risk and have revolutionized bridge design and retrofit philosophies. In Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges, three of the world's top authorities on the subject have collaborated to produce the most exhaustive reference on seismic bridge design currently available. Following a detailed examination of the seismic effects of actual earthquakes on local area bridges, the authors demonstrate design strategies that will make these and similar structures optimally resistant to the damaging effects of future seismic disturbances. Relying heavily on worldwide research associated with recent quakes, Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges begins with an in-depth treatment of seismic design philosophy as it applies to bridges. The authors then describe the various geotechnical considerations specific to bridge design, such as soil-structure interaction and traveling wave effects. Subsequent chapters cover conceptual and actual design of various bridge superstructures, and modeling and analysis of these structures. As the basis for their design strategies, the authors' focus is on the widely accepted capacity design approach, in which particularly vulnerable locations of potentially inelastic flexural deformation are identified and strengthened to accommodate a greater degree of stress. The text illustrates how accurate application of the capacity design philosophy to the design of new bridges results in structures that can be expected to survive most earthquakes with only minor, repairable damage. Because the majority of today's bridges were built before the capacity design approach was understood, the authors also devote several chapters to the seismic assessment of existing bridges, with the aim of designing and implementing retrofit measures to protect them against the damaging effects of future earthquakes. These retrofitting techniques, though not considered appropriate in the design of new bridges, are given considerable emphasis, since they currently offer the best solution for the preservation of these vital and often historically valued thoroughfares. Practical and applications-oriented, Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges is enhanced with over 300 photos and line drawings to illustrate key concepts and detailed design procedures. As the only text currently available on the vital topic of seismic bridge design, it provides an indispensable reference for civil, structural, and geotechnical engineers, as well as students in related engineering courses. A state-of-the-art text on earthquake-proof design and retrofit of bridges Seismic Design and Retrofit of Bridges fills the urgent need for a comprehensive and up-to-date text on seismic-ally resistant bridge design. The authors, all recognized leaders in the field, systematically cover all aspects of bridge design related to seismic resistance for both new and existing bridges. * A complete overview of current design philosophy for bridges, with related seismic and geotechnical considerations * Coverage of conceptual design constraints and their relationship to current design alternatives * Modeling and analysis of bridge structures * An exhaustive look at common building materials and their response to seismic activity * A hands-on approach to the capacity design process * Use of isolation and dissipation devices in bridge design * Important coverage of seismic assessment and retrofit design of existing bridges (10) Larsen Truss "Chainsaw" Retrofit The Passivhaus approach can be implemented when retrofitting existing buildings as well as when building new ones. Heating energy use in an existing building can be reduced to 10% of what it was prior to renovation. The "chainsaw retrofit"--so called because this approach involves removing the overhangs of the existing house with a chainsaw!--is one way to add the additional insulation. Matt Wasse in our office has created an animation to illustrate how this approach works. Have a look. Retrofitted Touring Bike! Art Deco Chandelier - Myer Emporium Mural Hall, Bourke Street, Melbourne In 1931 Sidney Myer (1878 – 1934) Russian emigre turned Melbourne businessman and philanthropist decided to reinvigorate his store the Myer Emporium by redeveloping his flagship Bourke Street store at 314-336 Bourke Street. Part of this included a new facade in the prevailing interwar style of the time – Art Deco and the addition of several more floors to what was already a very large department store. On the sixth floor a chic European style ballroom with soaring ceilings, sweeping stairs and parquet flooring was planned for use by the emporium’s patrons as a dining room by day and in which Myer could host Parisian fashion shows and hold exclusive Melbourne society events by night. The Myer Mural Hall, so called because of an impressive collection of ten murals by Australian artist Napier Waller, was the realisation of Sidney Myer’s dream. The Mural Hall, a dining hall suitable for a sitting for one thousand people and a venue for fashion parades and performances, was completed in 1933 as part of the sixth floor which was set aside for dining. It is a large rectangular space with a decorative plaster ceiling and balconies and wall panels in a Streamline Moderne style. However, it is the decoration of ten murals by renowned artist Napier Waller (1893-1972) that are the Mural Hall’s claim to fame. The murals took a little over a year to complete and were painted at Napier Waller’s home at Fairy Hills in Ivanhoe before being transported to the department store where they were hung. Completed in 1934, just after Sidney Myer’s death, eight of the murals are almost floor to ceiling, whilst the remaining two are located over the two side entrances. All pay homage to the seasons and to women and their achievements through history in the areas of art, opera, literature, dance, sport and fashion. The western wall features (running south to north) the full length murals; “Spring – The Dance Through the Centuries”, “Summer – Sports Through the Centuries”, “Autumn – Women in Literature” and the smaller mural “Modes of Transport by Land” above the door. The eastern wall features (running north to south) the full length murals; “Winter – Of Actresses and the Drama from Medieval Times to the Present”, “Pageant of Beautiful Women in History”, “Pageant of Women Famous in History”, “Revelation of Fashion” and the smaller mural “Modes of Transport by Sea” above the door. At the north end of the hall, a pair of "mannequin stairs" lead down from two balconies and the change rooms to a common landing. A temporary catwalk or stage was installed at this landing level for fashion parades and performances. The balustrading of the stairs is formed from 'Staybrite' stainless steel in an abstract ribbon design and the handrail is polished timber. The original timber flooring was replaced by parquetry in 1960. The hall is lit by three large and elaborate chandeliers from the original decorative scheme which were designed to provide up to ten different lighting effects. The National Trust classified the Myer Mural Hall noting it as “one of the finest Art Deco interiors in Australia and… one of the most impressive with few parallels anywhere in the world”. Napier Waller (1893 – 1972) was a noted Australian muralist, mosaicist and painter. He served in France from 1916, being so seriously wounded at Bullecourt that he lost his right arm. He was right-handed but learned to use his left hand while recuperating. Back in Australia, he established his reputation by exhibiting more paintings. He is perhaps best known for the mosaics and stained glass for the Hall of Memory at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, completed in 1958. However, Melbourne has been described as "a gallery of Napier Waller’s work". Pieces of Napier Waller’s works may be found in the Melbourne Town Hall (1927), the State Library of Victoria (1928), the T & G Life Building (1929), Newspaper House (1933), Florentino’s Restaurant (1934), the Wesley Church (1935) and the University of Melbourne (1940) as well as the Myer Mural Hall. The Upper Floor of "Harnett House" a Melbourne City Mission Home - Brunswick Hartnett House at 117 to 123 Albion Street, Brunswick, was constructed in 1934 to the design of well known Melbourne architects Stephenson and Meldrum. Named after Sister Elizabeth Hartnett, Hartnett House is both a single and double storey building, constructed mainly of brick and rendered brick, and also timber. Although erected in the 1930s, its Queen Anne design was both unusual and old-fashioned for the time, belonging more to the Federation period of the first decade of the Twentieth Century some twenty years before. The building is asymmetrical and it has a very prominent gable facing the street. This, together with the dramatically placed tall chimney in the centre of the gable, help to make the design a landmark building. The terracotta roof is mainly gabled but there are also hipped sections, and the rafter ends project under the eaves. The main section of the building is red brick with rough cast render decoration on the upper storey, while part of the building is painted weatherboards. Another feature is the half-timbering treatment of the gables. Hartnett House was constructed in connection with the Brunswick area operations of the Melbourne City Mission in 1934. In 1888 a brick house with four rooms and stables, owned by a carter Thomas Allum, stood on the site of the building. It was acquired by the Salvation Army Trustees between 1888 and 1889, and was occupied initially by Captain Samuel Roshe and then by Colonel James Barker. By 1890 it was a wood and brick house of 18 rooms, which hints at a speedy building program by the Salvation Army. In 1891 the property also included a shop. Major James Barker was commissioned in 1892 by General William Booth to take charge of the work of the Salvation Army in the colony of South Australia and adjoining colonies. For reasons unknown Major Barker and his wife arrived in Melbourne instead and rapidly set up a number of corps. George Hall took possession of the property in 1893. By 1899 the house had become a Salvation Army Home and children’s shelter. It appears that a timber building served as the home and that others occupied the brick house. In Melbourne directories the establishment was referred to as the Rescued Sisters' Home in 1890, the Neglected Children's Home (Salvation Army) in 1900, and by 1906 the Melbourne City Mission Home, with Sister E. Hartnett in charge. Made with metal loops, the floor squeaks whenever someone walks on it, making noises very similar to nightingale song. This of course was an effective intruder detection mechanism for the paranoid Tokugawa shogunate, which perhaps explains why all those samurai preferred to use the roofs instead. Nowadays it is best appreciated by the hordes of schoolchildren on class excursions. squeaking floorboards 'That woman is a woman!' So thundered Simon Callow in the film Shakespeare in Love, thus underlining one of the great differences between our theatre and that of the Elizabethans where women were prohibited from appearing on the stage. In this highly controversial book, the first on the subject for over sixty years, Joy Leslie Gibson looks at the female roles in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama from the point of view of the boys who actually had to create these fascinating and dramatic parts. Scrupulously researched, this groundbreaking book sheds new light not only on Elizabethan drama but also on society as a whole. It will be required reading for any lover of Shakespeare or anyone made curious by a visit to the theatre to see one of Shakespeare's plays.
