SQUEAKING OF ART, The Mice Go to the Museum

SQUEAKING OF ART, The Mice Go to the Museum

Brilliant in color, conception, and execution, Squeaking of Art brings the subject of art to the youngest readers. In this truly child-oriented guide to art appreciation, ten mice pals visit a museum filled with some of the world's most famous paintings and talk about what they see.

Each gallery in the fantasy museum groups paintings by subject, such as pets or music, or by category, such as portraits or landscapes. From Matisses to Mondrians, van Goghs to Vermeers, there are versions of eighty-five paintings from all eras painted in Wellington's bright and graphic style. Written in a simple yet exuberant way, questions and comments pepper the text and invite children to participate. Part child's-eye view of a museum and part ode to the inspirational power of great masterpieces, this extraordinary picture book lays the foundation for a lifelong love of art by showing how much fun visiting an art museum can be.

A single birdnote cracks open my dream
a squeaking swing of a note
A Brighton bird, a thrub, a spoorling, or is it a shrill?
new sheets creek under my wellwalked ankles
pictures flit of the bony west pier
it's flesh dripped into the sea.
Mikes breath the shingly tide.
A chatterly hum, peers through the floorboards
a squirlett of light drops onto the equadorian rug with its packmen men.
Tho' puffy from chips & parsnip cake breakfast teases
Redbush tea & haddock from that peruvian plate I think.
A jaunty pink punk still bobs beneath my lids
a driftwood clock ticks seven
manure incence tickles my nose now
mike sniffs awake

Nijo floorboards

Nijo floorboards

Nijo castle was built by the Tokugawa shogunate for the shogun's residence in Kyoto during the Edo period. The outer santum was built with a special 'uguisubari' flooring, which is usually translated as 'nightingale floorboards'. Made with metal loops, the floor squeaks whenever someone walks on it, making noises very similar to nightingale song. This of course was an effective intruder detection mechanism for the paranoid Tokugawa shogunate, which perhaps explains why all those samurai preferred to use the roofs instead. Nowadays it is best appreciated by the hordes of schoolchildren on class excursions.

Squeaking Cleopatras: The Elizabethan Boy Player

'That woman is a woman!' So thundered Simon Callow in the film Shakespeare in Love, thus underlining one of the great differences between our theatre and that of the Elizabethans where women were prohibited from appearing on the stage. In this highly controversial book, the first on the subject for over sixty years, Joy Leslie Gibson looks at the female roles in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama from the point of view of the boys who actually had to create these fascinating and dramatic parts.
Scrupulously researched, this groundbreaking book sheds new light not only on Elizabethan drama but also on society as a whole. It will be required reading for any lover of Shakespeare or anyone made curious by a visit to the theatre to see one of Shakespeare's plays.
