Učenje budizma se nalazi u zbiru svetih pisma nazvanih ' tri košare' ili Tripitaka, a također i u knjigama različitih škola budizma.
Tripitaka Vinaya Pitaka govori o redovničkoj disciplini. Sutra (ili Dharma) Pitaka govori o doktrini, npr. povijesti Budhe, teoriji osobnosti i ponovnom rađanju, o Tri dragulja i Pravilima.
Abhidharma Pitaka govori o naprednoj doktrini i filozofiji.
Dhammapada ili 'Staza prirode'. To je najstariji budistički tekst. Dosta je kratak, ali od velike važnosti i sadrži Četiri plemenite istine. Plemenitu osmerodijelnu stazu i mnoge poduke o praktičnoj moralnosti i samodisciplini.
