Happy hours all night long for the tupai
Happy hours all night long for the tupai PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian press may be fixated on politics in recent weeks but it was the humble Malaysian tree shrew that grabbed the headlines in major newspapers and websites throughout the world. A research has revealed that the pen-tailed tree shrew , commonly referred to as tupai ekor kembang , can drink the equivalent of a case of 3.8% beer every night but does not get drunk. “This discovery will probably not lead directly to a cure for human alcoholism in the sense that they have something that we can copy,” Dr Frank Wiens told The Star in an e-mail interview. “But it can also not be ruled out. In a general way, I think it likely that understanding the causes and consequences of tree shrew alcohol drinking in the natural environment will give new directions in the search for better therapies.” Dr Wiens and Annette Zitzmann, his co-researcher, work at the Animal Physiology Department at the Bayreuth University in the United States and their findings were published in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences , the official journal of the United States National Academy of Sciences. The research was carried out at the Segari Melintang Forest Reserve in Perak and some other areas. Video clips that accompanied the article on the PNAS website showed the nocturnal creatures drinking the beer-like fermented nectar of the flowers of the bertam palm. “When it flowers, this palm smells like a brewery,” said Dr Wiens. "I thought, 'somebody else must have looked at the animals attracted by this smell'. "But, you know, the bertam palm has sharp spines on their fronds and is formed in dense clusters. Maybe that has prevented an earlier discovery. I still have several bertam spines in my flesh." The tree shrews go on a natural-palm-beer binge that lasts two-and-a-half hours on average per night. The equivalent amount of alcohol would cause a human to collapse in a drunken stupor. WWF Malaysia’s field biologist Mark Darmaraj said this particular species was very hard to spot in the wild. In all his years of research on small mammals, he only managed to catch one in the Royal Belum park. Darmaraj, who is now working on the tiger conservation project, said not much was known about the species. “It is the only nocturnal species in the shrew family,” he said. According to the scientists, the tree shrew has been living on a diet that is the equivalent of nothing but beer for up to 55 million years. Humans only discovered the art of brewing and distilling alcoholic beverages some 9,000 years ago. According to scientists, seven mammalian species in their study area consume alcoholic nectar daily from flower buds of the bertam palm , which they pollinate. The 3.8% maximum alcohol concentration that they recorded is among the highest ever reported in natural food. The Quran goes high tech
The Quran goes high tech FTEC Resources Bhd has bundled a digital version of the Quran with its Smartbook mini notebook. The Quran software, created by Al-Tasneen Sdn Bhd, includes audio recitations of the entire Quran; translations in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Arabic; search engine to find verses; and recordings of Azan prayers by famous Mu’adzins from Saudi Arabia and Egypt. FTEC hopes to make learning the Quran easier, fun and interactive, said Major Ismail Ahmad, FTEC executive director. “It also can be used by adults to get a deeper understanding of the Quran,” he added. The recording of Quran verses will make it easier for users to memorise and recite the verses by heart, said Ismail. The bundle is a good deal because users are not just getting an application but also a mini notebook that is capable of running basic computing tasks such as an Internet browser, word processor and educational software, he said. The mini notebook has an Intel Atom processor, Intel 915GMS chipset, 802.11bg WiFi, up to 1GB of RAM, up to 30GB of hard disk space, a webcam and SD memory card slot, and is powered by Windows XP Home operating system. Accident leads to discovery of firearms
Accident leads to discovery of firearms KUANTAN : A road accident led police to the discovery of a pistol and several rounds of ammunitions from three men near Padang Tengku, Lipis last Thursday. State deputy CID chief Supt Mohd Haris Daud said the three suspects, aged 20, 21 and 29, were immediately detained during the 10.15am incident along KM56 of the Lipis-Merapoh road. “The men, said to be businessmen, were on their way to Kuala Lumpur from Kota Baru. However, they met with an accident when their Mercedes Benz collided with a crane. “As a result, they suffered minor injuries,” he said, adding that police found a live bullet in the front passenger seat and cash amounting to RM13,827. Supt Mohd Haris said that police, suspecting something amiss, proceeded to search the entire car and found another round at the back seat. He said reinforcement was called in and they later found a Glock semi-automatic pistol and several rounds of ammunition in a magazine near some bushes. “The three suspects will be investigated under the Firearms Act 1960,” he said, adding that police were in the midst of ascertaining whether they had a valid firearms licence. In a separate case, Supt Mohd Haris said police shot a suspected criminal in the stomach after he resisted arrest at a bus station in Felda Chini, Pekan at about 5.45pm last Thursday. He said during the struggle to free himself, the suspect was accidentally shot by a policeman when he tried to snatch his service revolver. “Checks showed the suspect, aged 31, who was banished to Perlis under restricted residence had eight previous convictions including thefts and house break-ins. “He was rushed to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital and is in a stable condition,” he said. |
Food fest at Central Market features a lot of local favourites
Food fest at Central Market features a lot of local favourites AN array of Malaysia’s most popular hawker dishes await visitors at the Central Market Kuala Lumpur where the Malaysian Hawker Food Fest is being held this week. The festival, which is on until Sunday, was launched on Feb 27 by Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry secretary-general Datuk Muzahet Masruri. Among those present at the launch were organising chairman Datuk Yazid Othman and National Integrity and Unity Department director-general Datuk Azman Amin. The fest, with the theme “Unity through food” features Malay, Chinese, Indian fare and also Portuguese dishes from Malacca. Yazid said the event served as an avenue to introduce Malaysian culture and cuisines to tourists. “Besides that we want to show the unity we have in Malaysia and the best way to present that will be through our menu,” said Yazid. “This initiative is also aimed at making Malaysia the top choice for tourists in search of good food,” said Muzahet. He added that since Malaysia was a melting pot of different cuisines, dishes that used to be associated with a certain culture could now be called Malaysian food. “Unity is not something we should take for granted. “We should grab any opportunity we have to ensure that we continue upholding our multiracial ties,” Muzahet said. Among the food available at the fair are sup ekor, satay, yong tou foo, and nasi lemak. One of the hawkers, Mohammad Hatta, 36, from Selayang Baru, said the fair was an opportunity for him to introduce his Bentayan Malaysian Pizza. “I run my business at pasar malams in the Selayang area. I hope being here will make more people aware of my pizzas,” he said. |
Two new choppers for Sabah firemen
Two new choppers for Sabah firemen KOTA KINABALU: Sabah firemen will receive two new helicopters by the end of the year to boost search and rescue abilities particularly in rural areas. Fire and Rescue Services deputy director general Datuk Mahadi Md Ali said the department was evaluating the Mi-172 helicopter before making a purchase. “The helicopters will be brought here by the end of the year or early next year,” he said after the closing of basic training for the Special Air Unit here recently. Some 50 personnel were involved in the training that culminated in a demonstration at Anjung Selera in Likas Bay here. The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department has some helicopters and 771 personnel at various fire stations. Mahadi said the helicopters were useful in search and rescue operations in Sabah and Sarawak in view of geographical conditions and limited road access in rural areas. |
US Bank names Treasury undersecretary as new CEO
US Bank names Treasury undersecretary as new CEO CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - Wachovia Corp., the fourth-largest U.S. bank, named Treasury Undersecretary Robert Steel chief executive on Wednesday, ending a nearly six-week search for a new leader. The Charlotte-based bank also said it has set aside $4.2 billion pretax to cover bad loans for the quarter, leading to an estimated second-quarter loss of about $2.6 billion to $2.8 billion. The quarterly loss will equal $1.23 to $1.33 per share, excluding an expected write-down of goodwill. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected a profit. Wachovia is expected to release second-quarter earnings on July 22. Steel succeeds Ken Thompson, who was ousted by the bank's board in June after a series of missteps. Among them was Thompson's decision to buy mortgage lender Golden West Financial Corp. in 2006 for roughly $25 billion at the height of the nation's housing boom. Steel, 56, who has been the Treasury Department's liaison with Wall Street since the fall of 2006, announced his resignation Wednesday, effective immediately. He is an alumnus of investment bank Goldman Sachs Group Inc. He is also a Durham, North Carolina, native and is chairman of the Board of Trustees at Duke University, his alma mater. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson praised Steel and said, "I know he will excel in his future endeavors.'' Lanty Smith, who had been serving as interim chief executive, will remain Wachovia's chairman. Smith earned his law degree at Duke and served on the board of trustees from 1997 to 2003. "We love Bob's background,'' Smith told The Associated Press. "He has deep expertise in financial services, the experience in Washington with government, is somebody that's really smart and can look at things from an intellectual point of view and can also get in the weeds and really understand details and manage quite effectively.'' Smith added that "there's a very proud connection'' with Duke University, and that the two "worked very closely together'' on the board of trustees. All business and staff units will report to Steel. Ben Jenkins, who had been interim chief operating officer, will continue to serve as vice chairman and head of the general bank, the bank said. Wednesday's announcement of a new CEO may hush market rumors that Wachovia is an acquisition target, though the selection of Steel could also fuel questions about the relationship between Wachovia and Goldman Sachs, which has been rumored to be interested in acquiring the bank. Wachovia last month hired Goldman Sachs to analyze its troubled loan portfolio. Smith said Wednesday the company plans to remain independent, despite rumors of a possible takeover. And while Steel's impressive resume could help satisfy restless shareholders, he doesn't have experience running a retail bank, Wachovia's forte. Wachovia said Steel plans to hold a meeting with employees Thursday morning in Charlotte. "I have a background of what I would describe as team-oriented, collaborative management. That's what I learned from 30 years at Goldman Sachs,'' Steel said in an interview. "My job isn't basically to go three or four levels down and fix things, my goal is to encourage people to use their skills to figure out the right answers by evaluating and developing a discussion.'' Wachovia shares closed Wednesday down 8 percent at $14.29. Latest business news from AP-Wire |
