If you're struggling with your German homework; never fear because Slink is here! We sent Slink Ice along to meet Tokio Hotel -a seriously huge band in Germany. And they were kind enough to teach her some useful German phrases to use in a mosh pit.

Interview Nr.2 - Sound Generator

INTERVIEW - Tokio Hotel

The biggest band that England's never heard of talk to Sound Generator about their meteoric rise.

Matthew Sheret feels decidedly old as he sits down with Tom, Bill, George and Gustav in the plus surroundings of Chelsea Harbour to talk about their multi-platinum career, all by the age of 18.

Your guys are...really young! Tell us a bit about how you got to this point?
Bill: Tom and I have been doing music for a really really long time. We started out at about 7 writing our own songs and stuff. It really went very fast, going to our own stages and playing parties, private parties and weddings, little city parties and stuff like like that. We met the other two about seven years ago in the main club that we always used to play, and they knew each other from music school. When we got together we needed a bass played and a drummer and it all worked out really good. We got along really well, had the same vision and then we took off.

Was it tough adjusting to all this attention?
Tom: Sure, that was a deep cut into this world, and a big experience. You have to imagine that our first single went from nowhere straight to number one in the German charts. As soon as we came out with 'Durch den Monsun' everything changed for us. All of a sudden we were on big stages and we actually didn't know a lot or have a lot of experience. We had to get used to a lot of situations and a lot of stuff. We had bad experiences and good experiences and we really needed time to grow into it. We will never get used to paparazzi and stuff like that, that's something we will never adjust to. At the moment we enjoy everything about it. We're traveling the world. We just came back from our first European tour, which was really our highlight both career wise and as musicians, it was the biggest thing for us ever. We're not getting used to it anymore, we're living it finally and we're enjoying every second.

This album, Scream, was your first recorded in English. Was that tough?
Bill: I suppose I have to answer this as the others didn't have any problem with an English album, haha. Honestly it was a big challenge for me, and for the guys as well, it was emotionally a big step doing an album in English because we a lways did music in German, I always wrote lyrics in German, I always sang in German, so it was a big big step for me and a weird feeling to go over to singing in English. We made the decision because lyrics are really important for us and we really wanted people to get what we were singing everywhere because you can't expect in every country for your fans to sit down and translate your lyrics. I'm a big perfectionist, so it took me some time in the studio because I really wanted to soun d good. I didn't want to sound like some German who's trying to sing English, I wanted to sound native. I'm really really proud of it, we're all really proud of it. It's a mixture of the first and second German albums
Tom: It's like writing a new song. It's tough to get that one-to-one translations of the songs and you have to work really hard on them.

So what's coming next for you?
Bill: Well it's touring, touring, touring. We're going to a lot of countries that we haven't been to yet and doing promotion over there, but at the moment our main spot is really the UK, because we're releasing 'Ready, Set, Go' on the 27th August and this is a really really big step for a German band to set up here, so that's what we're concentrating on.
Tom: The second big thing for us is that the European tour is being continued, we've got extra bookings from countries we haven't been to yet like Holland, France and Russia. That all starts in October.

What are you guys listening to at the moment then?
Tom: Well, I'm listening to German hip-hop all the time, which is very far away from our style, and when I listen to bands I listen to ours, hahaha.
Gustav: I listen more to the harder stuff: Metalica, System of a Down and that sort of stuff.
Bill: A little bit of everything. I really like Placebo and Coldplay, depending on whatever mood I'm in
George: I'm listening to Sum 41's Underclass Hero a lot.

So who are Tokio Hotel? Only the freshest lot roaring out of the German music scene for a long while. There are the twins, the spiky-dressing, androgynous Bill (vocals) and hip hop-loving Tom (guitar), joined by bassist Georg and drummer Gustav to play a dark mix of heavy rock with a lick of eyeliner. The band had a number one album in their homeland which has now gone platinum tenfold, and a few awards for best newcomer and best selling German act last year. Due to the fact the UK doesn't generally follow the music trends prevalent on the continent, they're still fairly unknown around here. They tried to hold a webchat last week and the sheer volume of fans logging on crashed the site. And their oldest member is just twenty. It's a hell of a ride for the exultant rockers of Tokio Hotel...

Let’s start with a random one. If you could go to any planet, where would you go?
Tom: I would like to go to Venus.
Bill: I would visit E.T.
Gustav: I would visit Pluto!
Georg: I would stay on Earth ‘cause there’s nothing really going on on the other planets.

Some slightly more sensible questions now. What have you been doing today?
Gustav: We’re actually in London, doing promotion.

I don’t know a lot about how Tokio Hotel started… How did you all meet?
Tom: Bill and I used to do music together since we were seven years old. Back then I was already playing the guitar and Bill sang along while playing the keyboard, which delivered bass and drums. However, if you want to have a real rock band you need some more people and pretty much by accident we meet Gustav and Georg at a gig we played in a small club called Gröninger Bad.
Georg: Gustav and I already knew each other from music school and became friends. That night we went together to the club and saw these two guys perform. There is no denying the fact they needed some help and that is when it all started! (Everyone laughs)
Tom (smiling): Strange, I remember it completely different. I recall Georg and Gustav begging to be a part of our cool band back then!

Do you go back to your hometown very often? When you’re there, do you get recognised by fans a lot?
Bill: Whenever we have the time we go home and spent time with friends and families.
Tom: Sure we get recognised. That’s OK, but going home is very important for us – spending some time with your people, a little time out of the band, that’s important for each of us.



In Europe, you’re massively popular, have lots of screaming fans and have won several awards. How do you cope with all the pressure?
Georg: It does not seem to us that there is that much pressure. Everything we achieved so far, everything that has happened is more we ever dreamed of. We’re not expecting anything. We’re just very excited about what is going to happen next.

What have you done with all your awards?!
Bill: It depends. Sometimes you get four awards so everybody can take one home – These ones you’ll find in all our homes. Sometimes you only get one for the whole band. In that case it’s passed to each band member from time to time.

What has been your best gig so far?
Bill: That’s a tough question! Every country, every city and each venue is different and great in its own way, so there is not really one best gig; they all are very special to us. The biggest one though was on July 15th this year when we performed for more than half a million people in Paris – that was unbelievable.
Tom: Just imagine – you are already standing on a magnificent stage and as far as you can look there is only people cheering. It is overwhelming!

Do you have any superstitions or things you have to do before going out on stage?
Tom: We don’t have a ritual but 1.5 hours prior to a show it’s just us in our backstage room. We spend this time together and we’re usually very nervous. We think about everything that could probably go wrong.
Bill: I always say we are the most nervous band in the world. We go crazy.
Georg: Except Gustav. He is more laid back.
Gustav: That’s true! When I am in the backstage room I just put on my earphones and listen to music. If I had to listen to what the others were saying I would have had a heart attack by now!

You played in London last month and sold out Islington Academy. How was it? How do your UK fans compare to elsewhere in Europe?
Bill: That was very exciting. I mean this was the first time we played a whole English show. So I was especially nervous.
Gustav: Our fans always surprise us. No matter where we go, they are already there, waiting for us, cheering and are very excited to see us. That’s true for the English fans as well. They really knew how to rock the house, which makes us want to come back for some more shows.

It sounds like you’re always busy – what do you do to relax?
Bill: Sleep as long as possible, watch some TV, eat, meet friends and family and go to sleep again.

Your album ‘Scream’ is released in the UK in November. Can you tell me a bit about it?
Tom: After seeing how people react to our music in Europe, we started thinking about an English album. Our fans are really amazing – they picked up our music, started to learn German to sing along with us and to translate the songs into their language. Unbelievable. That’s really special, you can’t expect that. And ‘cause our lyrics are very important to us and we want people to understand what we’re singing we decided to translate our songs for an English album. We picked our favourite songs from the first and second German album for the English version and here we are.

Does it feel weird to be singing your familiar songs in a different language?
Bill: It did in the beginning when I recorded the songs in the studio. I always wrote in German, I always sang in German – it’s my mother language. And then, after singing these songs for such a long time in German, it felt like recording brand new songs. Another thing was, that I wanted them to sound really good. I’m a perfectionist and I wanted them to sound like an English singer sang them. So it took me some time and a lot of patience. Now that it is done I’m really happy with the results and all of us are very proud of the English album.

If you had your own hotel (called Tokio Hotel, obviously) where would it be and what cool things would you have in it?
Georg: There would be only gigantic rooms and in each one there would be tons of plugs for all kinds of electrical devices.
Tom: And every room would have its own wellness area.
Gustav: And there would be full wireless lines everywhere.
Bill: The whole hotel would come in a very modern style – a lot of glass, chrome and steal. Very unique and modern.

What are doing for the rest of today?
Georg: Promotion, having dinner and going to bed.

What’s German for ”I really like Tokio Hotel and I will buy their next single. Let’s rock!”
Tom: Ich liebe Tokio Hotel über alles und werde mir auf jeden Fall die neue Single „Ready, Set, Go!“ kaufen. Let’s rock! :-)

Bravo nr.35: Crazy! This is Bill's new tattoo!

Hey ljudi, ispričavamo se što je intervju na engleskom i nadamo se da ćete sve uspjeti razumjeti:

He did it again. One year after the star on his belly Tokio hotel singer Bill has gotten a new tattoo. This time it is the left underarm of the 17 year old. There is written in beautiful letters “Freiheit 89”. What are the secrets behind this writing. Bravo has asked….




Bravo: What does “Freiheit 89”mean?
Bill: On 1 September 1989 where Tom and I born. That means that soon we will finally be 18. We have been looking forward to that for a while. After that you are truly free.

Bravo: What do you mean?
Bill: In Germany you are finally an adult at 18. That means I can finally drive a car and can decide things for yourself. That is just freedom to me. I don’t have to listen to people anymore and can finally do what I want.

Bravo: And why this tattoo?
Bill: It is a birthday present for me – surprise! (laughs)

Bravo: Why before your birthday?
Bill: We have a break from concerts at the moment. A tattoo needs some time to heal so it fits perfectly.

Bravo: Did you design it yourself?
Bill: No, the idea is from the guy that did the tattoo. He also did my star. We have talked about the design for some time now, we had contact through email. And finally it is ready – and I am super happy with it. I really like the way it is written.

Bravo: But it turned out really big, don’t you think?
Bill: Yes, a little. But I wanted it to cover the whole arm.

Bravo: Didn’t it hurt?
Bill: Yes, a lot. Really weird was that last time I got this intoxicating crčme to put on it – but I couldn’t use that this time. The crčme opens the pores and then it could have got stained. It didn’t hurt as much as the Tokio Hotel logo in my neck though. That was the most intense one.

Bravo: It sounds like your getting used to getting tattoos done even though they hurt….
Bill: Yes, it is really cool. I was very nervous though. A new tattoo is always very exciting.

Bravo: With the star you got into trouble with your mother, did she get mad this time?
Bill: No, in 10 days I will become 18. Nevertheless, she thought it was ok. That is just the freedom I am talking about.

Bravo: In 1989 the wall fell that separated Germany. Has your tattoo also a political meaning?
Bill: No, it hasn’t got anything to do with that. After the tattoo already was done someone pointed that out to me, but when that wall fell I was born – I only know Germany as one country.

Bravo: What will be your next tattoo?
Bill: I don’t know yet, but I really wanna get more done. And they will always have a certain meaning. A pointless picture is nothing for me. But don’t worry, I won’t tattoo my entire body or anything like that. Some places are just off limits. I would never tattoo my “you know what”. (laughs)

Bravo: How about Tom, doesn’t he like tattoo’s?
Bill: No, he doesn’t do things like that but he was there when I got mine. He was really convulsive. (laughs)

Bravo: But a twins-tattoo, that should really be something for you?
Bill: I proposed that too, but Tom didn’t want it. He thinks we are already connected enough already.

Bravo: What have you planned for your 18th birthday?
Bill: We haven’t planned anything really. But it is sure that it will be big with all our friends and family, we’ll just have to see.

Izgleda da je naš Bill ponovno napravio tetovažu. Uz već dobro nam znan logo banda na njegovom vratu te zvijezdu na trbuhu, sada njegovo tijelo krasi još jedna tetovaža, ako ćemo preciznije njegovu ruku.
Tetovaža glasi: ''Freiheit89'' ili u prijevodu na hrvatski ''Sloboda89''.
Isprve su to bile samo glasine i veći nije vjerovala međutim sada se pojavila i slika što znači da je istina.
