Finished walmart holiday hours turned gift card exchange my last paper of the semester, and spent the usps holiday hours of yesterday (as well as today) schlepping stuff from pacificor llc apartment to the new house were renting. Ill post more on the move soon, but suffice it to say, its going to be a great place for our family. While making my umpteenth gift card exchange back and forth between places, I heard on the radio that, according to this gift card exchange Express survey from a month or so ago (not sure how I missed it then), 66% of Christmas gift card exchange plan to give gift cards this year, a nearly-ten-percent jump from last years survey. Heres why: Among those planning on purchasing gift cards, two thirds (66%) want the receiver to choose his or her own gift, and a large majority (57%) say that the option of giving gift cards has changed how they think about shopping. Seven in ten (73%) say they finish shopping faster with less stress. Shoppers also say they will go to the mall and stores less often, including Thanksgiving weekend (60%), some will likely get their holiday shopping done earlier (59%) although other shoppers say they plan to start later because they know they can always get a gift card (45%). How do those receiving the cards feel about this trend? Apparently they dont seem to mind: By letting people get what they want for the holidays, gift cards have changed the dynamics of post-holiday shopping. According to the survey, a majority (56%) say they return fewer gifts when they receive gift cards. A third (32%) will redeem their gift cards within a month, and nearly one in four (23%) will redeem their cards within six months. Seven percent say they plan to gift card exchange gift cards during the post-holiday week. The survey goes on to talk about who people are buying gift cards for, as well as that those giving gift cards have no expectation of receiving a thank you note from the recipient. In listening to the story today, it seems obvious that the trend of our nations gift-giving frenzy this time of year revolves not around what someone wants to give, but what someone simply wants. Perhaps its too subtle an observation, but when I listened to all the commercials following the story, this was their clear theme. Full disclosure: Im not much (okay, Im not any kind) of a gift-giver myself, so I dont stay up nights thinking about this. But for those who are (and those who do), is whats keeping you up your indecision about what exactly you want to give to someone else, or are you losing sleep trying to figure out exactly what the other person wants? Again, its a subtle difference, but it seems to me the latter causes a whole lot more stress than the former. A friend of mine and I were talking about this (sort of) at a recent Christmas party we were both attending. As we were discussing the latest books we had been reading, George made the comment that he loves the holidays because his family always gives him some new books to read for the new year. However, when hes asked what books he would like, he tells them to pick out something they think he would like, rather than him tell them what he wants. He says hes never disappointed with their selections, and his library stays a little more varied than it would otherwise as a result. I like that philosophy, but I recognize that it takes time and thought. Is the gift card phenomenon simply a function of limited calendars and creativity (it certainly doesnt seem to be due to a limited pocketbook)? Do you buy gift cards for others, and if so, whats your main motivation? And if gift card exchange dont, why not (and what do you do instead)? |

Shhhh. I have a new lover. You know how it is, you think about them all day long and thoughts of them pop into your head at the most inopportune moments - like during a meeting at work, or worse, you find yourself tuning out of hum-drum conversations with your real partner to think about the new lover. I cant wait to join up with my lover every day at our usual time. Sometimes we manage to hook up twice in one day. Oh the bliss! Now, before you start wagging your finger at me and going on and radioeuropetarget.blogspot.com about what a great guy Ken is and how Im playing with fire, blah, blah, blah, let me tell you who my new lover is&.. Its a book. Do you get the feeling, when you read a really good book, that you never want it to end? You try to savor every word on every page in order to make it last, but then find yourself gobbling it up just because the lovers and other strangers are soooo delicious? Thats what this book is like. I love that feeling, dont you? The book is The Post Birthday World by Lionel Shriver. I recently read We Need to Talk About Kevin, her previous book, and thats when I fell in love with her writing (yes, Lionel Shriver is a she). Now Ive got one of her previous books (Double Fault) waiting in the wings for me lovers and other strangers the library, its going to be a Lionel Shriver love-fest at my house for several more weeks! The PB World is about a choice the main character must make: whether or not to give into a temptation to kiss her life partners best friend. Thats when the book splits into two separate stories - what her life becomes if she does and what might happen if she resists. This author has a talent for describing the internal lives of women in a way that rings absolutely true to me - our fears and fantasies, our (sometimes) willingness to give too much of ourselves to others, our own duplicity. As I said before, her words are a delicious feast. Im often loathe to recommend books. You tell a couple of people what a great book such-and-such is, they run out to reserve it at the library, or (horror of horrors), they actually buy it, then they spend several chapters trying to figure out why you thought it was such a bang-up read before abandoning it for something more to their own taste. I recently had this happen when I recommended The Terror, and two people I know actually tried to read it. They both hated it. Loathed it, in fact. Of course, I admit to doing the same thing with some of the must-read recommendations from my own friends and family. Anyway, try it if you get a hankerin. Maybe The Post Birthday World can become your secret lover also. |

Police searching a suburban St. Louis home for a boy missing since Monday found him and made an even more startling discovery — a 15-year-old boy missing for more than four years, authorities said Friday. The stunning development came when both 13-year-old Ben Ownby and 15-year-old Shawn Hornbeck were found at an apartment in Kirkwood, miles from the rural locations where the boys disappeared clash of the choirs years apart. Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke called the discovery Sgood, unbelievable news” at a news conference on Friday. The key to finding the boys was a beat-up white pickup truck spotted by a schoolmate of Ben’s who got off the bus at the same time. The friend saw the pickup speeding away about the time Ben vanished from the gravel road near his home. SWithout that, we might not be here today,” Akers said on Saturday. On Thursday night, Kirkwood city police officers were serving a warrant on an apartment complex when they noticed a white truck matching the description. They contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and determined where the owner of the truck was, then searched Devlin’s home Friday and found the boys. There were no immediate details about what police found inside the apartment, or how the boys might have been detained. Toelke said authorities were still trying to learn the motive behind the abductions. Franklin County Prosecutor Robert Parks said more charges are likely. It is great news to hear not only that Ben was found but also that Shawn was as well. In many cases of missing children, the longer the child is missing, the harder it becomes to find them. Some times the children are murdered, other times they have Thelma & Louise by accident, but often they are still alive. It only takes the efforts of concerned, attentive people to rescue children. Little information is known about the boys kidnapper Michael Devlin. From what has been released to the press, he was relatively liked and few people knew, let alone suspected, that he had kidnapped Shawn or Ben. It wasnt as if Devlin was some anonymous drifter. He was bryan spears St. Louis. Some of his family members live in town. He was a 1984 graduate of Webster Groves High School. He worked at an Imos pizza parlor in Kirkwood. Devlins family said they were bewildered by the news, saying Friday they had no idea that Shawn was living with Devlin. It was a mystery, too, why Shawn hid with Devlin and did not try to contact his family. Devlins co-worker at the Imos, who didnt want to be identified by name, said a boy called the restaurant early Friday afternoon and said he was looking for Devlin. What is particularly surprising in the brazen manner in which Devlin kept the boys. They were not that far away from their homes. It was however released earlier that Devlin had threaten to kill Shawn if he told anyone. While I do not wish to speculate as to the reason why Devlin kidnapped both boys, their situation bears a resemblance to Stephen Stayners kidnapping and abuse. To date, Devlin has only been charged with kidnapping, though as more details about Devlins activities come out, he will likely face more charges. Even if he has not abused either Ben or nielsen research this man deserves to spent a long time in prison. Hopefully he will not be given the slap on the wrist Stephens abuser was.
