GOTHIC-SUBKULTURA

Krajem 70-ih godina, nezadovoljni punk i new romantics scenom, mnogi mladi ljudi slušaju bendove poput Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Joy Division, UK Decay, Sex Gang Children, Southern Death Cult, The Cure i sl. koji kasnije bivaju proglašeni «gothic» bendovima. Godine 1981. otvara se «goth» klub The Batcave u Londonu, a uskoro se slični klubovi počinju otvarati diljem svijeta i polako se formira «gothic» scena.

Ovu subkulturu odlikuje specifičan način odijevanja, najčešće u crnu odjeću (no ne nužno), i šminkanja, zatim originalni umjetnički pogledi na svijet, često fasciniranost čudnim ili morbidnim pojavama, određena doza depresivnosti i razočaranja u današnju mainstream kulturu. Religijska uvjerenja su najčešće ateistička s povećanim interesom za okultizam i drevne poganske religije, iako ima prisutnih i raznih drugih vjeroispovijesti. Česta su mišljenja da su pripadnici ove subkulture sotonisti, da su auto-destruktivni, skloni samoubojstvu, da nose isključivo crnu odjeću, da se nikad ne smiju, da su opsjednuti smrću i vampirima i slično. Sve su to samo predrasude, i ta se uvjerenja razlikuju od pojedinca do pojedinca.

PODRIJETLO NAZIVA “GOTHIC”

Naziv «goth» originalno potječe od istočnogermanskog plemena Gota koji su 410. godine osvojili Rim. Rimljani su ih smatrali nekulturnim barbarima (slično Vandalima). Kasnije se termin «gotika» počeo koristiti za specifično stilsko razdoblje u srednjovjekovnoj arhitekturi (12. do 15. stoljeće) koje se odlikovalo visokim, šiljastim građevinama koje su ostavljale «barbarski» i «zastrašujući» dojam. Konačno, u 18. i 19. stoljeću u književnosti se pojavilo razdoblje tzv. «gotičke književnosti» koja se odlikovala pesimističnom, morbidnom tematikom – smrt, razočaranje životom, patnja, besmislena potraga za smislom života, jeziva ubojstva i samoubojstva i sl. (npr. Edgar Allan Poe koji se proslavio svojom pjesmom «Gavran»).

No, kako se pridjev «gotski» / «gotički» pripisao post-punk glazbenom pokretu prilično je nejasno. Analizirajući brojne intervjue s popularnim umjetnicima (glazbenicima) tog razdoblja pronađeno je da je David Bowie već 1974. godine upotrijebio izraz «gotski» kako bi opisao glazbu benda Diamond Dogs. Smatra se da je Bowie, zbog svoje velike popularnosti na rock sceni, utjecao na Martina Hannetta, producenta Joy Divisiona, koji je 1979. rekao da Joy Division svira «plesnu muziku s gotskim prizvucima». Već ranih 80-ih godina taj je izraz postao raširen u muzičkoj industriji. Tako je, na primjer, Siouxsie Sioux iz legendarnog benda Siouxsie & the Banshees 1981. (kada je izdan album «Juju») opisala vrstu glazbe koju sviraju kao «gotsku». No, da bi se stvar dodatno zakomplicirala naknadno je pronađen članak u kojemu se bend The Doors etiketira kao «gothic rock», a to je bilo čak 1967. godine, (!!!) dakle, otprilike desetak godina prije nastanka «gothic» pokreta tj. subkulture!

GOTHIC - GDJE JE I KADA NASTAO?

«Goth» pokret čine muzika, moda i ljudi. Nameće se pitanje tko su ljudi koji su se prvi okupili i začeli ovu subkulturu te postavili norme odijevanja i šminkanja za sljedbenike ovog pokreta. Smatra se da su postojale tri struje utjecaja.

1. Prvi su bili nezadovoljni «punkeri» [pankeri]. Naime, kada se punk pojavio 70-ih godina sa svojim buntovničkim stavovima, agresivnim ponašanjem, ekstravagantnom odjećom i irokez-frizurama, oduševio je mnoštvo. Uskoro su čudne frizure bile često viđene na ulicama, a agresivni stavovi više nisu bili nikakva novost. Mnogi su međutim pronašli i razočaranje u samoj punk muzici koja je bila jednostavna, gruba i sa sažetim, često anarhističkim tekstovima. A oni su željeli više…

2. Druga grupa su bili razočarani «new romantics». Oni su u početku bili «ušminkani» buntovnici koji su se protivili grubosti punkera i imali su sasvim drugačiji pristup muzici. No, ubrzo je njihova muzika postala sve sličnija komercijalnoj, mainstream «pop» sceni i mnogi su se, naravno, razočarali.

3. Treći su bili «post-punk tinejdžeri» - premladi za punk i neimpresionirani njegovim ostacima, koji su slušali samo bendove kao što su Bauhaus i Killing Joke, koji su kasnije prozvani «gothic» bendovima.

Značajnu ulogu imao je prvi «goth» klub – The Batcave, koji se otvorio 1981. godine u Londonu. Tamo su svirali bendovi kasnije prozvani «gothic» i njihovi obožavatelji su dolazili u Batcave oponašajući njihov stil odijevanja i šminkanja – većina muškaraca izgledala je poput Roberta Smitha (pjevač benda The Cure) sa svojom raščupanom crnom kosom i napadnom šminkom, dok su djevojke uglavnom slijedile izgled Siouxsie Sioux (iz Siouxsie & the Banshees) čije je odjeća izgledala poput s&m «fetiš» odjeće (crna/ kožna/ čipkasta/ mrežasta odjeća i mnogo srebrnog/ metalnog nakita). Uskoro su se počeli otvarati slični klubovi i u drugim zemljama i «goth» scena je polako formirana.

STIL ODIJEVANJA

Na modu ove subkulture utjecala su dva faktora – izgled članova Bauhausa, Siouxsie & the Bansheesa , The Curea i sličnih bendova s jedne strane i specifičan «klupski look» Batcavea s druge strane. I muškarci i žene su nosili uglavnom crnu odjeću, ponekad s bijelim detaljima, ali su najčešće izbjegavali bilo kakve boje. Šminka je bila napadna – izvučene crne linije oko očiju (najčešće podsjećajući na tradicionalnu egipatsku šminku) i crni ili tamnocrveni ruž za usne. Šminkali su se i muškarci i žene. Neki muškarci su čak nosili čizme s visokim potpeticama, no u tome nije bilo ničega transvestitskog, tvrde oni. Česte su bile majice koje su podsjećale na ribarske mreže (naravno, crne boje), kožni kaputi, sakoi, bijele košulje, kožne hlače, plaštevi, s&m odjeća, krupan nakit, crne sunčane naočale (u zatvorenoj prostoriji!) i slični ekstravagantni detalji)

S vremenom su se unutar ove subkulture razvile mnoge podgrupe, a tako se i stil odijevanja promijenio. Crni kožni i mrežasti ili čipkasti odjevni predmeti i dalje su dominirali. No, popularne su postale i neke boje – osobito krvavo-crvena, bordo, tamnoljubičasta, tamnozelena i srebrna. Odjeća nije nužno bila izazovna sa s&m detaljima; mnoge djevojke su počele nositi duge, staromodne, romantične haljine s korzetima i dugim rukavima. Boja kose i laka za nokte nije više bila nužno crna – sada su mnogi imali bijelu, upadljivo crvenu ili ružičastu ili modro-plavu kosu, a lakovi za nokte su doista bili svakakvi. Zadnjih desetak godina osobito je postao popularan «vampirski look» sa dugim crno-crvenim plaštevima u stilu grofa Drakule, a neki su si čak dali ugraditi i umjetne vampirske očnjake! Tako da danas, grubo govoreći, možemo govoriti o pet stilova pripadnika ove subkulture: s&m izazovan izgled, romantičan izgled, futuristički (uglavnom šareni) izgled, klasični crni izgled i vampirski izgled. Mišljenje da pripadnik ove subkulture mora nužno nositi crnu odjeću, imati crnu kosu i crne nokte nije ništa drugo nego običan stereotip.

RELIGIJSKA UVJERENJA

Česta je predrasuda da su pripadnici ove subkulture ili sotonisti ili okultisti/ pogani. Takvo mišljenje uglavnom imaju neupućeni ili stariji ljudi koji to pretpostavljaju zbog crne odjeće i crnog make-upa. Ipak, sve su to samo predrasude. Ljepota ove subkulture je u tome što ona ne insistira na nikakvim određenim religijskim uvjerenjima, tako da unutar «gothic» subkulture možemo naći i katolike i sotoniste i budiste i ateiste, te još mnoge druge. Sloboda u odabiru religije je ovdje maksimalna.

PREDRASUDE

Uz ovu, kao i uz svaku drugu subkulturu, vežu se razne predrasude kao posljedica neupućenosti i nerazumijevanja, a uzrok tome je najčešće ekstravagantan, često šokirajući vanjski izgled pripadnika «goth» scene. Najčešće su slijedeće predrasude: fasciniranost smrću, sotonistička uvjerenja, boravljenje na grobljima, depresija i sklonost samoubojstvu, fasciniranost vampirima i pijenjem krvi itd. Koliko god neki ljudi već na prvi pogled znaju da je to apsurdno i neistinito, tako su neki uvjereni u istinitost toga. Naravno, postoje pojedinci koji su depresivni, koji vole boraviti na groblju ili su pak opsjednuti vampirima, no nepošteno je bilo kakvu takvu etiketu «prikvačiti» cijeloj subkulturi.

GLAZBA

U samim počecima ove subkulture dominirala je goth rock glazba 80-ih godina. S vremenom su u obzir došle i druge vrste glazbe kao što su: darkwave, industrial, medieval, dark ambiental, gothic metal, celtic, glam rock, synth pop, psychedelic itd. Kao što je velika sloboda u izboru religije, tako je i velika sloboda u odabiru glazbenog stila i pripadajućih bendova. «Gothic» subkultura ne promiče pesimizam, morbidnost i ograničene poglede na svijet; ona želi naglasiti umjetnički pogled na svijet, želi naći ljepotu i dubinu u svim stvarima, teži originalnosti i otvorenosti spram novog i naizgled čudnog. Želi razbijati stereotipe i predrasude, odbija mainstream kulturu i nudi nova, originalna, alternativna rješenja. Odbija biti bezličan dio mase i potiče pojedince da se odvoje i imaju hrabrosti biti ono što zapravo jesu. Sloboda odabira glazbenog stila, stila odijevanja, te religijskog opredjeljenja unutar ove subkulture je velika i neograničena. Ova subkultura postoji već dvadeset godina, razvija se i konstantno mijenja no zasad ne pokazuje nikakve znakove slabljenja ili propadanja, i stoga predstavlja jednu od najduže očuvanih i najoriginalnijih subkultura mladih.

Od svojeg nastajanja 1995. godine, finska grupa H.I.M. (His Infernal Majesty) ugurala je goth-rock u komercijalne vode na mala vrata. Nakon četiri albuma, oni su jedan od najpopularnijih mladih rock bendova u Europi, s milijunima prodanih kopija albuma i rasprodanim koncertima gdje god se pojave. Sama grupa HIM više zastupa posebnu inačicu “goth-metala”, a to je “love-metal”.

What is goth?

This is probably the hardest question any goth could try and answer, one may as well ask 'what is society?' as it has so many facets it defies any definitive explanation.

Goth in its simplest form, is a subculture. A group of people who feel comfortable within each others company. There is no specific thing that defines what you need to do or be to fit into the goth scene (except of course the implied black clothing). People in the goth scene all have different musical tastes, follow different religions, have different occupations, hobbies, and fashion sense.

Why do people become goths?
Most goths become goths because they have been spurned by 'normal' society because the way they want to live their lives does not fit in with how most people are told to live theirs. Goths are free thinkers, people who do not accept the moral rules of society because they're told 'This is just how it is' or 'This is what God says!'. Rather goths tend to listen to what you have to say, and make up their own mind. This kind of free thinking and rejection of dogma earns only rejection in todays society.

However because of this rejection from 'normal' society, goths have banded together to associate with other free thinkers. This has a beneficial effect on both the individual and society as a whole. For the individual they have a sense of belonging, and friends they can associate with. For society it removes one more misfit filled with rage from society's streets.

This of course is not the case for all goths. Many goths today are goths for a variety of other reasons. They like the music, or the clubs are better, they have goth friends and joined in with them, or they just like staying up late nights and goths are the only ones awake to talk to.

The gothic stereotype
Many stereotypes of goths exist these days. It seems everyone has their own way to define 'what is goth'. From the stereotypes based on clothing to music right up to the stereotypes of all goths being satanists or part of some kind of cult. Categorically, all of these are false.

The goth scene is just as widely varied as society in general. There are many different professions represented in the scene, from highly skilled professionals like doctors and lawyers, to tradesman, to technically minded people to clerical workers. Many different musical tastes exist (and not all of them goth, there is a HUGE 80's following in the goth scene for some reason). The fashion varies vastly from goth to goth from the traditional flowing victorian style garments to the buckled and studded style regalia (also called industrial style, which is often closely related with goths, and have come to an understanding of co-existance, if uneasily at times).

How do I get into goth?
This is the simplest part of the page. Go check out our Community section over on the left, and use it to find out whats going on in your local area. Goths tend to be accepting and open minded. Just turn up to a club or event wearing all black and your already in the goth scene. You'll pick it up as you go along (just a hint though, lay off the vampire comments!).

The gothic sense of humour is highly developed, and often leans toward the satirical. Quietly laughing at the more idiotic and less tolerant factions of society that seem to think yelling out of cars at us makes them cooler. Goths have learned to laugh at themselves and see society in a much different light. They have had to, and it is a trait most would not give up.

Goths have for the most part (not unanimously of course, but mostly) dropped all forms of prejudice. Noone is afraid within the goth scene to come out as being gay, and noone has to hide their religion for fear of scorn from their peers or zealots wanting to convert them from the arms of Satan. In fact because of these facts (and the general lack of prejudice) the goth scene has a large proportion of gays/bisexuals, and followers of non-mainstream religions and views. This of course is the most important aspect of gothdom, and why most goths became goths in the first place, tolerance.

But they think weird!
Ah, but this is the beauty of goths. Most subjects that are taboo in 'normal' society are freely discussed and debated about. Death, religion, magick, mysticism, and many other topics that are only roached carefully outside of the gothic community. Most goths have realised that fear is only a reaction instilled in us by dogmatic propaganda, and once you realise there is nothing to fear from the topic, whats to stop you discussing it?

Goths often revel in the fear given to them by society as a whole. Often the behavior exhibited by society to them based on society's perception of them from stereotypes, rumour, etc are a constant source of entertainment. Of course, most of the rumours are totally unfounded, goths are people like everyone else, however when you already have a reputation, going for the shock factor is often far too tempting to see how much society at large is willing to believe (or deduce) with only a little encouragement.

This does not totally fall away once you get inside the scene unfortunately, and goths are all too often tempted to try for the shock factor within the scene (which turns out more tacky than shocking). Goths when you get down to it can be a rather pretentious bunch, trying for those extra 'goth points' on the gothier than thou scale, but it adds to the enjoyment.

History of Goth
Modern goth (ignoring where the name itself originally comes from) started in the early 80's as part of the punk subculture (which is itself was a rejection of most societal values, and anything considered part of the 'norm'). The phrase was coined by the band manager of Joy Division, Anthony H. Wilson, who described the band as 'Gothic compared with the pop mainstream'. The term stuck, and as punk eventually died, Goth survived and became its own subculture. The punk clothing and hairstyles mellowed, and the core 'rejection of society' attitude alone lived on in the gothic subculture. Over time this itself has been modified to be more of a 'no more blind acceptance of society's values' as opposed to rejection because it was there to be rejected (and because you could get away with it!).

Movies such as The Crow, and bands such as the Bauhaus helped establish the gothic image as dark, depressing, and even evil. As more and more 'dark' movies came out, numbers in the gothic subculture expanded, and there is now a gothic community in almost every major city around the world, and quite a number of towns have their own representative contingent. Nowdays there are more goth bands around than ever, and it has turned from an 80's phenomenon into a 90's way of life for many people. Unlike the punk subculture that it spawned from, there even exists a class of mature goths, still following the scene around even past their 20's and into their 30's and beyond.

Life Sux bigtime

Danas je bilo stvarno fuckin dosadno pa sam išla rješavat neke testove na internetu budući da nitko od frendova nije mogao ići van.I tako riješim ja taj test i znate kak ću umrijeti-pojest će me svinje ljudožderi(ah,what a horrible way ti die).Nekome je moralo bit užasno dosadno kad je išao uopće smišljat takav test.uglavnom riješavala sam valjda još 6 testova Are you a real Goth i na svima mi je došlo da jesam pa mi je došlo da se malo zamislim i čak mi se čini i da bih i mogla bit jer uvijek sam u crnom i tak se nekako i ponašam(dobro ne režem se i ne pokušavam ubit ali to nemoram radit sad da bih kao bila neka fora.Kao sad neka darkerica)I frendice me stalno pitaju dal sam darkerica jer tak izgledam.Pa stvarno možda i jesam.Al dosta sad o tome jer ionako nije zanimljivo.Joj al stvarno ne znam o čemu ću pričat.Ma dođe mi da se ubijem(to se ne računa kao pokušaj samoubojstva)

Yes idem napokon na more ali tek sredinom 7. Napokon ću vidijet malo sunca i mora.Inače su sve moje frendice već ili otišle ili će ići na more ovaj tjedan a ja još ove godine nisam pošteno ni vidijela mora namcor .

Inače ja uopće ne znam zašto meni uopće služi blog.Mislim drugi pišu neki dnevnik il nešto,imaju dobru pozadinu i muziku,a ja praktički nemam niš nego dosadne postove o dosadnom životu u dosadnom gradu u dosadnoj zgradi u dosadnom stanu.Uglavnom o dosadnoj dosadi.Najvjerojatnije zato jer mi je mozak,naravno,na paši a inspiracija mi je uzela godisnji pa se snalazim kako znam...
Ali jedina dobra stvar je bila da sam čula svog susjeda(ne susjedu baš susjeda)kak sluša Push the button.Mislim nitko od cura koje poznajem to ne sluša a kamoli neki dečko...
