(17) Day 128/365 - My Mother So, mothers day this years just so happens to fall on the same day as my fathers 57th birthday. The double holiday was pretty normal in that we all did our own things and only got together for dinner. We had yet another cake from my mother and Shawn’s cake decorating class on Saturday. They had decorated three cakes from a new place in Vero Beach, FL. One was for my father’s Birthday, the other was for Mother’s Day & The Birthday and the third was a peace offering or sacrifice to my X-sister-in-law or as we say “his mother”. She had lost a whole lot of weight upon being single again so what better gift then 4000 calories of cakey goodness! Hey, I thought it was a good idea. Plus, her son did the decorating. Which would explain the massive amount of frosting flowers on the cake, meant only to cover the 1001 finger holes. In little mans defense, he was only testing the frosting for quality... 200 times! On the plus side, its kid approved and mother devoured. I wonder if she shared any with him? Anyways, I figured today instead of doing the living dead Part III, I’d dedicate is to the woman who made it possible for me to be so damn creative (translation: near broke!). My mother being my number 1 fan dedicates a good amount of her life affirming her 3 sons that they are in fact amazing. Now, some would say that would eventually lead to a large head and problems driving a car without an open sunroof. Luckily for me I had what you’d call a proverbial ego helmet on, protecting me from what I like to call J.Cory syndrome or better known as just “Cory Herb”. My brother Cory, a Marine stationed in desert of California is a cocky, quick tempered hard head that isn’t afraid to tell you just what your problem is. He’s me but with no reservations. After numerous violent scuffles, a few phones to the head and a fist fight or two, he has earned the name Violent J. I sure do love my brother, just wish I could see him more! Well, I digress once again! My track record with photographing my mother is less than stellar as most times I end up making her look twice her age or worse. What can I say, I’ve used her for a number of photoshop experiments. Well, her and her “sister” Susan! However, despite the past, today was going to be different. I decided early on that I was going to dedicate day 128 to my Mother. At first, she naturally assumed that I was going for another digital plastic surgery type photo. I informed her that I was planning on doing her justice this once. She agreed, but between you and everyone reading this (including her) she just did it because she has the unwritten motherly contractual obligation. I’m pretty sure, spitting me out was her form of a signature... So not my fault! I decided to continue with the style of portraits I started with myself on day 125. I’d like to get the whole family like this and get a portrait wall in my house. I setup one AB800 Approx at 3:02 on the clock figuring that straight back from the camera is noon. The power setting were very low at 1/16 and the camera was set at 1/60 @ f/14 iso 100. this would again under expose the shot my about 1.5 to 2 stops. Post production would bring back the exposure. I setup and had her sit down. A little apprehensive due to past events, I eased her mind with a little humor and we were off. I tend to make people laugh a lot while shooting. This works great for that candid portrait like today. But... try having the model be serious during a dramatic shoot like Day 46 while I’m acting like an idiot. I try to retain myself and am usually successful. Now, Shawn on the other hand, that’s a lost cause! I’d rather gag him or have him turn away during dramatic themed shoots. If he’s not cracking jokes, he’s dancing to a beat that can only be heard in his head or making smart ass remarks like how he absolutely loves to be the human light stand on sexy shoots. Ah... Shawn! I was however, able to retain myself a bit and get some serious shots from my mother. We loaded the images and decided to go back out for round 2. She felt she looked too teethy and too old. She said that under exposing a whole lot more would take care of the problem. Yes, mom... even the late Bea Arthur would look young underexposed by 5 or more stops! Round 2 was more successful and I settled on a shot. I now have the equipment still setup on by the pool. I should really go get it in before FL decides to be a smart ass and dump a random rain storm on it. Oh, Florida... how I hate thee so! Anyways, tomorrow is the shoot with State of Grace Activewear, so if your all looking for a shot with some crazy scenario, I’m sorry all your getting is a woman in active wear standing like a mannequin. Well, I hope to make it better than that but we will have to wait and see. Lighting: AB800 Med. Softbox at 3:02 power at 1/16 triggered by Cyber sync Side note: Paul C. Buff, if your reading this, I’d really appreciate a replacement CSRB+ because 2 of mine are not shutting off and 365.179 ~ Official Birthday Portrait of a Sleepy 6 Year-Old Today is Silas's 6th birthday. He wanted to celebrate with Max, so we drove out to Max's place in the country. Silas romped, stuck his nose in every gopher hole, got hot, slurped water, crashed in the house and played with a horse named Raindrop. Rather, Raindrop played with him -- running and whinnying -- very sweet! Then we stopped for cheeseburgers, fries and a shake. A treat for us both. Five years ago today, I brought home an emaciated, goofy, anxious 1 year-old Dobie rescue. We named him Silas after a favorite Deadwood character, soon nicknamed Ding Dong after his own character. :) Happy 6th Birthday, Silly-ass. 60th birthday cake decorating ideas SEX after 60 is the perfect joke gift for any man or woman turning fifty! (13) Mom's.Kitchen This spoon-carved Victorian farm oak china cabinet came out super in Farm-Red, non-distressed, original patina brass bin pulls, which tie in nicely with the old brass fireplace bucket used as a magazine stand alongside. Juxtaposition with small detailed prints of the period on pale colored walls keeps the area spacious even though the room is small and the piece large. A leg of an original finish oak library table can be seen in the bottom right corner, mixing the painted look with earthy wood tones. Colorful pots on top finish off the look with a combination of a refined Rookwood jardiniere alongside the duller glazes and varied colors of stacked yellow-ware mixing bowls. This is my mom's kitchen :) more works in progress The background is a shelf that I'm in the middle of decorating. The shelf is red but I've covered the top with this great vintage contact paper. I found it a long while ago at Goodwill and it had never even been opened. We had some very similar stuff on a cabinet when I was growing up. The rest are wooden plaques that will be paintings, and some paper/drawings/stampings - I may make bookmarks out of them but I've yet to decide. DECOR FOR SMALL BATHROOMS : DECORATIVE BATH FAN LIGHT Decor For Small Bathrooms
The Complete Guide to Bathrooms: Ideas & Projects for Building & Remodeling (Black & Decker) Bathrooms are one of the most popular-and expensive- home remodeling projects. Because of the expense, do-it-yourselfers can enjoy enormous savings over the cost of having the work done by contractors. In addition to the quality-of-life benefits offered by a new or remodeled bathroom, a new bath can add substantial equity to the value of a home-in some instances, the entire expense is offset by increased home value. A bathroom is one of the few remodeling projects for which this is true. The Complete Guide to Bathrooms is the only book homeowners will ever need on this important subject. It includes virtually every type of bathroom remodeling project, from the most cosmetic dress-up to the most complete renovation. This comprehensive guide includes an impressive idea section to open readers' eyes to options. In addition to basic fixture replacement information, the book includes extended how-to information on creating a new master bathroom, basement bath, or half bath, from rough plumbing in exposed framing through final fixture connections. It also teaches how to install ceramic floor tile, install an adjustable slide-bar shower head, and create a glass-block divider wall. Finally, a section on Universal Design shows how to adapt a bathroom for someone with mobility limitations-an elderly family member, for example, or one with a physical limitation. (8) bangle holder i love bangles, yes, i do. they're generally just relegated to a drawer of mine where I lose them and then it becomes a clutter fest. Matt and I found all of these old jars at a flea market in Buffalo Grove. They are in impeccable condition and look great. I think we got five of them for $5, or else them plus some other random thing and a beautiful glass domed cake plate for $10. Matt had them hostage at his place, but since he left I stole them back. I think I used to think I would use them for kitchen staples, but they're a bit too small, and it seems a bit creepy now. I'm now using one for cotton balls in the bathroom, and one day realized that they might make the perfect bangle holder. And indeed, they do. Separated into plastics and metals (i have far too many) Renovation: Mirror from over the sink placed above toilet with an Anthropologie French towel rack (makes the corner!) Anthropologie French towel rack painted the same color as the trim in an small old fashioned bathroom - grayed down shades of brown make this bathroom feel more modern and demure. The old mirrored cabinet from over the sink was rehung over the toilet to provide interest, especially from a functional point of view for men - it also opens up the space by reflecting the new mirror, mirrored lights and window for a brighter fresher look, and more space for storage. The Anthropology French rack brings history and functional style into a small space where everything must work. COUNTRY AMERICANA DECOR - DECORATED BED ROOMS - MASQUERADE THEME DECORATIONS. Country Americana Decor
Americana: Dispatches from the New Frontier Harley-Davidson bikers . . . Grand Canyon river rats. . .Mormon archaeologists. . . Spelling bee prodigies… For more than fifteen years, best-selling author and historian Hampton Sides has traveled widely across the continent exploring the America that lurks just behind the scrim of our mainstream culture. Reporting for Outside, The New Yorker, and NPR, among other national media, the award-winning journalist has established a reputation not only as a wry observer of the contemporary American scene but also as one of our more inventive and versatile practitioners of narrative non-fiction. In these two dozen pieces, collected here for the first time, Sides gives us a fresh, alluring, and at times startling America brimming with fascinating subcultures and bizarre characters who could live nowhere else. Following Sides, we crash the redwood retreat of an apparent cabal of fabulously powerful military-industrialists, drop in on the Indy 500 of bass fishing, and join a giant techno-rave at the lip of the Grand Canyon. We meet a diverse gallery of American visionaries— from the impossibly perky founder of Tupperware to Indian radical Russell Means to skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. We retrace the route of the historic Bataan Death March with veterans from Sides’ acclaimed WWII epic, Ghost Soldiers. Sides also examines the nation that has emerged from the ashes of September 11, recounting the harrowing journeys of three World Trade Center survivors and deciding at the last possible minute not to "embed" on the Iraqi front-lines with the U.S. Marines. Americana gives us a sparkling mosaic of our country today, in all its wild and poignant charm. Experience the many faces of America with Hampton Sides as he: AMERICAN ORIGINALS . . . drops in on the charmed life of skateboarding icon Tony Hawk; studies counter-terrorism at the G. Gordon Liddy spy school; goes Hollywood with American Indian Movement radical-turned-movie-star Russell Means; steps out of the closet with Mel White, religious right ghostwriter-turned-gay activist; mushes the Iditarod Trail with Alaska legend Joe Redington. AMERICAN EDENS . . . runs the rapids during a man-made flood in the Grand Canyon; crashes the redwood retreat of California’s elite Bohemian Club; debriefs the “bio-nauts” as they emerge from captivity in the Biosphere; dives into America’s greatest swimming hole; gets ecstatic with the Zippies at their secret all-night techno-rave. AMERICAN RIDES . . . ponders silver bubbles at the annual Airstream RV convention; revs it up at the Harley-Davidson rally in Sturgis, South Dakota; sails the Chesapeake with snooty owners of a rare antique sailboat known as the log canoe; roams the streets with D.C.’s hard-core band of bike couriers. AMERICAN BY BIRTH, SOUTHERN BY THE GRACE OF . . . . . . speaks in tongues with black Pentecostalists of the Memphis-based Church of God in Christ; fishes for lunkers at the Bassmasters Classic; goes underground with the world’s greatest cave rescuer; unravels the mystery of a notorious teen murder in rural Mississippi. AMERICANS ABROAD . . . crosses the Sahara Desert with American endurance runners at the infernal Marathon des Sables; bushwhacks through MesoAmerica with Mormon archaeologists in search of lost tribes of Israel; visits a high school friend who’s become an Uzi-toting Zionist pioneer in the West Bank; walks the route of the Bataan Death March with characters from Ghost Soldiers. AMERICAN OBSESSIONS . . . cranks it up with high-end stereophiles at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas; gets bowled over by 5,000 squealing salesladies at the annual Tupperware convention; plumbs the mysteries of the "schwa" at the National Spelling Bee; scrapes at the stucco of the neurotic architectural tradition known as Santa Fe Style. AMERICA, POST 9/11 . . . traces the harrowing stories of three World Trade Center survivors; goes off-roading in the Imperial Sand Dunes; almost embeds on the Iraqi frontlines with the U.S. Marines; remembers Shane Childers, the decorated Marine who became the first American combat death in Iraq. Franciscan Desert Rose 20-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 Desert Rose the largest selling pattern in the history of American dinnerware, made its debut in later 1941. It has enjoyed the world's longest period of popularity of any dinnerware pattern produced by a single company. The Rose Rugosa, rugged wild rose of poem and song was a natural design selection. The character of the bloom with its simple delicate petals made it adaptable to hand painting. This beautiful handpainted pattern is still one of America's favorite casual tableware patterns. In 1964 the sixty millionth piece had been produced and Desert Rose is now on display in the historical Smithsonian Museum. First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy chose Franciscan Desert Rose for use in the White House. In Desert Rose, the irregularly scalloped edge of thorny vines creates a believable frame for the fully opened pink roses with their golden centers and soft green leaves. The softness of the deisgn is further enhanced by its cream colored background. The twenty piece set includes four of each, 10.5 inch dinner plate, 7.75 inch salad plate, 6 inch soup/cereal, teacup and saucer. All pieces are microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe. Accessories are also available. Part of the bestselling dinnerware pattern in American history, this table service for four exemplifies the informal grace of Southwestern hospitality. First made in California and now produced in various countries, Franciscan dinnerware achieved immediate popularity when it appeared in the late 1930s and ranks as a prized collectible, particularly the American-made pieces (pre-1984). Apple (1940) and Desert Rose (1941) are the only continuously produced Franciscan patterns. Today's Franciscan dinnerware (the name honors colonial California's mission-founding priests) fulfills contemporary expectations, going safely into the dishwasher, microwave, and freezer. The pattern's subtly sculpted pink desert roses and green leaves are set against a pale sand background. Each of the four place settings in this set consists of an 11-inch dinner plate, an 8-inch salad plate, a 6-inch soup bowl, and an 8-ounce cup with saucer. The plates have indented centers and darker, slightly scalloped rims depicting rose vines. The cups' handles are also sculpted and colored like vines. --Fred Brack What’s in the Box 4 place settings. Each place setting consists of: 11-inch dinner plate; 8-inch salad plate; 6-inch soup bowl; 8-ounce cup; saucer. 20 pieces total. (15) Day 133: Sheer Wedding Madness Mostly a relaxing pre-wedding day... mostly. The bridesmaid dresses had all been fixed so that they fit the girls right. Mine felt quite tight- but my figure is difficult to fit, anyway. This little project of my mom's waited too late and she needed to steam all the dresses for all of us to wear in the morning. I was too scared to touch that hard-worked satin with anything hot so I took over the task of pew bows. I tied a piece of tulle around my head to be my magical pew-bow-tying-hat and went to work. These bows decorate the rows of seats in the auditorium along the aisle my sister will walk down with my dad. I had to make TWENTY TWO of them. Holy crapola. So I spent, oh, two hours? looping tulle and silver ribbon and fluffing each loop... and then, once finished, of course had to take a picture with what looked like the dead swan from Swan Lake that took over the kitchen table. Lordy. My mom laughed hard at this self-portrait with my camera propped up on a spool of tulle and my crazy bow and expression. I then glued flowers on all 22 of the bows, promptly lost my mind (I doubt it was there in the first place anyway), and went to bed. Only 6 hours until the morning- I was one of the last to go to bed but I'll be up with the bride to do her makeup first thing- and that makeup's gotta last all day! Stressed? Me? Noooooo. 6/14/08 Day 1/365: Wedding Cake Thursday, Jan.1 I have decided to try my hand at a 365 day photo project. This means that for the entire year, I will take at least one photo a day (well, I'll give it my best shot) . I will then post that photo into a set on my Flickr account labeled "365project". I'm not exactly sure what I'll be taking pictures of... lots of people do a 365 Self Portrait project, but I just don't know if I can stand to look at myself that often. Although, on the other hand, it would be very interesting. I am 22 weeks pregnant, expecting my second child in May. It would be interesting to document the changes in my body... and my life. Most likely, I will end up taking shots that describe what I did on that day. My life is not that exciting, so I imagine many of my shots will be quite mundane. But that's ok. And it will force me to try and be more creative. So here is what I did today: I put the finishing touches on the wedding cake that I'm making for a Jan.2 wedding. Then I whipped out the camera and had a "cake photo shoot" (my favorite part about cake/cookie decorating!). I always wonder what the neighbors think when they see me standing on chairs or the kitchen table, taking photos of a cake :) "Yes, yes... now turn. Beautiful. You're amazing....now look this way... yes!!! Just like that..." Seemed like a great place to shoot some film, and I did, & that included running a test 110 roll through the wonderful little Ansco 50 (originally given to me by someone in Texas when I was living in Maryland), a cam that literally circled the globe as part of the TravelCam v3.23 Collaborations group project. In any case, thank you for stopping by. PROST. ^_^ Egg tree I made this tree nearly five years ago, as a commission. The customer, however, decided that he didn't want it. I'm glad he did though, because I've become quite attached to this sculpture, and, after a long time of having it up for sale, I recently decided to keep it for myself. It gets all sorts of things hung on it - sun-catchers get photographed on it in the studio window; tinsel gets hung on it in December; and now, eggs are hung on it for Easter. easter decorations for sale Easter is Here, Celebrate with Easter Decorations! (6) Geneva01 As you enter, though, all confusion is stripped away and you’re left with the clean lines of dour, severely austere stonework. In 1535, spurred on by Bern, the people of Geneva accepted the Reformation and embarked on an iconoclastic rampage – all the altars in the cathedral, as well as every statue and icon, were destroyed, the organs were smashed and the painted decoration on the interior walls was whitewashed. Only the great pulpit and, by chance, the stained glass of the chancel, survived. As you wander through the soaring interior, the architecture, and the austerity, draw your gaze upwards; almost the only decoration to survive is on the capitals of the nave’s clustered pillars, grotesque monsters and a bare-breasted double-tailed mermaid. What is purportedly Calvin’s chair sits at the back of the church on the left, near the door to the North Tower, climbable for spectacular views over the city (Fr.3). You shouldn’t leave without spending time in the delightful Maccabean Chapel, last on the left before you leave. Used as a warehouse and later as a lecture hall, it was rededicated as a place of worship in 1878 and is filled with lavish and beautiful decoration dating from then. Copies of the only fifteenth-century frescoes to survive the Reformation – angels playing musical instruments – are on the ornamented vaults of the chancel within the chapel. The cathedral is built on the remains of occupation going back to the Romans: the first church, just north of the present cathedral, has been dated to around 350 AD. From then on, the hill on which the cathedral stands was the site of almost continuous building and rebuilding. Since 1976, archeologists have been working to expose walls, rooms and mosaic floors beneath the cathedral, and the huge archeological site is open to the public (June–Sept Tues–Sat 11am–5pm, Sun 10am–5pm; Oct–May Tues–Sat 2–5pm, Sun 10am–noon & 2–5pm; Fr.5), pretty rarefied stuff but exceptionally well presented and labelled, subterranean catwalks weaving around and over the crumbling remains. With more than 200 levels of building work so far discovered in eleven zones, it’s necessarily difficult to tweeze out exactly what’s going on, but the free audioguide helps. Maison Tavel From the cathedral portico, an alley leads you on to the Rue du Puits-St-Pierre. A few metres left, at no. 6, is the distinctive grey-blue sandstone facade – etched with trompe l’oeil mortar-lines – of Geneva’s oldest house, now the Maison Tavel museum (Tues–Sat noon–5pm, Sun 10am–5pm; permanent collection free). Built by the Tavel family in the twelfth century, the house was renovated after a fire in 1334, but in the sixteenth century the Tavel line died out. The house was maintained by various noble families until it was bought by the city in 1963 to display items from the history and urban life of Geneva. The vast cellars, which survived the fire intact, are the oldest part of the house, and they and the three upper floors are filled with moderately diverting items – massive carved doors, painted inn-signs and a complete twelve-room apartment showing everyday life in the seventeenth century – but the highlight of the museum is in the attic, a giant relief map of Geneva dating from 1850, showing the city complete with its fortifications, before the Pont du Mont-Blanc or the railway had been built. There’s a sound-and-light show talking you through points of interest on the map; ask the staff to play the English version for you. OMG! (5) Celebration 16 - Baby Boy Celebration 16 saw Meaghan placing a blue pacifier on top of the word 'awesome' in celebration of her soon-to-arrive baby boy. This celebration was a bit bittersweet, because it marked the first time anyone had obscured the word awesome, which was looking like it might be the sole original decoration to last throughout the day. So far, we've celebrated: - Meaghan's Baby Boy - The Extinction of Dinosaurs and Boxing - Bears - Esme learning the word 'cake' - Katie and Mexican Independence - Matt's Hatred of Stand-up Paddle Surfing - Sara's Hotness - Restraint (Matt) - Katie's (extra) spice of life - NINJAS! (Sara) - Casey's fascination of Parrots With Mysterious Origins - Corey's scones - Ava's first Pagel Beach Party - Simon's finally solving the rubik's cube (blue side only) - Beth's friends - Corey's new car 3:30PM...One Hour Until Party Time! After playing in bed for almost two hours I went in to find her standing up in bed happy as could be. Oh, well! No nap today, I guess! That's ok! When she got up from her "nap" she was happy to find the apartment decorated with balloons and Dora the Explorer Party supplies. She has been really into the idea of party hats for birthday parties for some time now so she was excited to find some all ready for her. She gladly tried one on for a picture. The apartment was decorated and the food (mexican, of course, since it is a Dora Party) was on course to be ready. Eloise picked out this dress to wear. We let her have a new Dora video we purchased for her birthday. She was happy to go watch it while she waited for the big party time to arrive. (13) Shinya Kimura's Spike Kimura rescues old Harleys from their postmortem fates as saloon decorations, museum attractions, and—worse—from having their dissected parts dispersed throughout a backwater of garages to become paperweights, ashtrays, and doorstops. His company, Zero Engineering, based in Okazaki City, Japan, is comprised of a small group of adherents who are loyal to both Kimura-san and his vision. True to the chopper way, Zero’s motorcycles also embrace contradictory philosophies of design, in this case a blend of Western and Eastern paradigms. Kimura chose not to follow the parade of shiny, chrome-plated, technologically freighted, and extravagantly painted bikes. He prefers antediluvian engines stuffed into chopped, rigid, gooseneck frames with an itsy-bitsy peanut gas tanks, leather bicycle seats, big fat balloon tires, wire wheels, and kick-starters. He exposes the mechanical guts of his bikes and virtually shines a spotlight on their prehistoric parts, including drum brake and Linkert carburetors. His electrical system might look as if it were wired by Nikola Tesla. Every piece of his machines flaunts its age. But don’t let the richly patinated facade fool you or the fact that it looks like it’s about to dump oil. It is put together like a fine Swiss watch—okay, maybe a Seiko. Its new form melds seamlessly into the Japanese landscape, as natural looking in front of an ancient Shinto shrine as the steed of a Tokugawa samurai warrior—out of time but not out of place, reincarnated. Kimura believes that old motorcycle designs transposed to contemporary choppers have a metaphysical power to transport riders into the past. In deference to his affinity for old engines, he strips away what a bike does not need to show off its power plant. The fact that old motors and frames are made of less malleable iron and steel, instead of aluminum, often dictates the forms that Kimura must follow and how a bike will ultimately look. Indian Larry's Chain of Mystery Larry was no Indian. As a young mechanic in New York City, he was renowned as the go-to guy for wrenching on Indian motorcycles. As fortune goes, the moniker stuck; the motorcycle company did not. From being chased in his car through several states by a police helicopter to getting shot during a bank robbery and winding up in Sing Sing, to being followed by a camera crew in a chase helicopter for a shot on national television, Larry’s life was filled with intrigue and adventure. Larry’s bikes are old-school. But that doesn’t mean old fashioned. An Indian Larry bike is, in his words, “stripped down to the essence of what a motorcycle should be.” There were no gauges, no long forks, no fat tires, no front fenders. He had no disdain for decoration though. He applied a number of signature touches to his choppers. For instance, you’ll often find painted graphics on an open primary belt, and there is always be a suicide clutch and jockey shifter. Kick-starters make more than mere cameo appearances, but when Larry once broke his right foot, he began to include electric starters. A sissy bar is the place to hang a bed roll and a jacket. The engravings on Larry’s motors rival the hieroglyphic art of ancient Egypt. And it’s a virtual Indian Larry trademark to have an oil filter hanging off the side behind the transmission, instead of mounted conventionally in front of the crankcase. He loved the “gizmoness” of choppers and wanted it to show. Larry was also big on ’60s-style candy color and metal flake. There is a requisite hardtail frame, but always with some crazy-ass twist—literally. Larry bent, snaked, and twirled red-hot steel into such complex shapes that you might think he swiped an ornate wrought-iron gate and made a bike out of it. Larry thought all of his bikes should be a cross between a Top Fuel dragster and a road racer.
