In my new, straightened circumstances, I'm having to consider parting with a few images. Friday, at the Liberty Antiques Show, in anticipation of such a brutal necessity, I bought this image, with the intention of selling it. Prior to that realization, i.e., brutal necessity, I would have bought the image with the intention of keeping it.
In the world of "gay interest," this photo has a number of things going for it. Moustaches are huge, cigars are very good, and guys sitting on other guy's laps, it doesn't get a whole lot better than that. Here, you've got five out of six with moustaches, you've got not one but two lap-sitters, and, objectively speaking, I think these are six fairly handsome guys. I think those shoes are a little gay too, but I'm no expert on shoes. How the American flag got in here, and what else is going on with this photo, I have no clue. One guy has a wedding ring on, so he must be on the down low.

I was able to hold temperatures down well under 200 degrees, although the pork was cooked at 225. Thermo controller maxes out at 300, but that's not a problem for slow cookin'.

Interestingly, the dome thermometer fluctuated fairly wildly (+/- 15F or more) while the temperature immediately above the meat held constant. Makes me think that the dome thermometer isn't all that accurate and the heat varies a lot depending on whether the fire has migrated to the back or front of the fire ring. Might put a damper on my plan to run the thermocouple to the dome thermometer next time...

There are things you can buy to do this, but that's less mad scientist-y and costs a couple hundred bucks.

For the uninitiated, this makes winter BBQing a WHOLE lot more pleasant. Before this, I'd have to wake up in the middle of the night once or twice to go adjust dampers on the egg to keep the temperature constant....especially when nighttime temps are down bellow zero.

The other morning one of my 6 gauge earrings slipped out in the shower. It bounced and clanged against the ceramic tub a few times before sliding down the drain. So much for that pair. I should have known they wouldn't stay in place without o-rings, despite the seller's assurances. Thankfully I found my backup pair. They're made of wood and they don't feel like they're going anywhere. I hope.

If you've never eaten corned beef I can assure you that it has nothing to do with corn but a lot to do with beef, usually the less tender cuts such as brisket or rump. The corn in the title doesn't refer to either wheat or corn on the cob but is a form of dry-curing.

The name is an ancient one and goes back to the days before refrigeration when meat was preserved in corns of salt. Pellets, some the size of kernels of corn, were rubbed into the meat to stop it spoiling. Nitrate, or saltpetre, which fixes colouring pigment in the meat, is also used in the curing process.

Today brining - using salt water - has replaced the dry salt cure but the use of the old name "corned", rather than "brined" or "pickled", lingers on. The spices that give the meat its flavour are peppercorns and bay leaf.

Corned beef comes in sealed rectangular tins which have to be opened with a key. This can be a very tricky operation for the inexperienced because if you mess it up there's no other way of getting the block of meat out.

If you're unlucky you might also cut your fingers off. But with luck the contents will slide out in one piece, allowing it to be sliced up for consumption. Spam, by contrast, now comes complete with an easy ring-pull top. Where does it come from?

Mostly from the large cattle processing factories in South America. Fray Bentos, once a well-known manufacturer and the brand we all remember, started up in Uraguay in mid-Victorian times and developed into a worldwide business.

An outbreak of food poisoning was blamed on the factory and it closed in the 1970s. Sales of corned beef plumeted.

So, having successfully got the stuff out of the tin, who actually eats it?

Corned beef still has its fans among the lazy since you don't have to cook it and can eat it cold, although since the widespread advent of refrigeration sales have declined.

It was well-known to the "Tommies" in the First World War trenches. These soldiers called it "Bully beer (boiled beef) and virtually lived on the stuff.

One reliable source states it was actually produced in small tapered tins so that these would fit snugly into their knapsacks. It's also said that in the last war army cooks were issued with special recipe books entitled 1001 Ways To Cook Bully Beef.

The idea was to stop the troops from mutinying.

In 1978, my family and I left our homeland of Saigon, Vietnam, amidst a sea of chaos. We embarked upon a new journey toward a brighter destination filled with hopes, dreams, and wonderful promises of tomorrow.

Despite failed attempts to find a viable escape route, we tried our best to persevere the stress and anxiety as we fled towards a better future. We found ourselves exhausted, disappointed, penniless with no time left to spare. However, escape was the only hope for my sister, Nghiem, as well as my mother.

My family consisted of three adults and four children. The only male in the family was my nephew, Luan, (the son of my fourth oldest sister) who was six years old. Chi, Thuy, and Van (my oldest sister's daughters) were my nieces who were ages 14, 12, and 10. The entire family, especially the adults, was puzzled and alarmed due to the uncertainty of what the future held. What was to be expected from this foreign land as we left Saigon? We have never stepped outside our own neighborhood, let alone our country. The children appeared more oblivious; perhaps it was because they were under the impression that we were simply going on a leisurely trip. Little did they know, this journey was permanent; and we were deeply unnerved about their future and the swerves and detours that this path could take us.

It was not that simple to get to our destination. We had to overcome danger and blend in with our surroundings just to avoid being caught. We could not fathom what lay ahead and what obstacles lurked around each corner. A sigh of relief was had when our boat became visible.

Once we set foot on the boat, we were exasperated from the seemingly endless and strenuous journey. However, we were packed like a can of sardines at the bottom of the boat which did not improve our situation. There was no room to move or breathe. We were forced to lie on a damp floor, and the stench the dripping sweat from the person next to you was wildly nauseating. We had to endure noxious living situations along with the smell of diesel gas, sea water, all mixed with vomit while dripping over our heads. We were exposed to the foul odors for days as the boat rocked back and forth relentlessly.

As the sun was setting, we became frightened as the blackness of the night consumed the horizon. The only sounds that could be heard were the waves crashing against our boat. Darkness did not come alone; it was accompanied by other unfortunate challenges. The compass began to malfunction, and the steering wheel was damaged. The sea water was slowly leaking into our boat. The water pumper was useless and as a result, we had to manually dump it out. We were no longer in control of this vessel. We stood helplessly as the ocean determined our fate. On the fourth evening, underneath the heavens, a storm was quickly making its way towards us. The atmosphere and attitudes dramatically changed. Not only was the ship damaged, our resolve and morale was damaged as well. Our worst fears were becoming reality. The only thing that awaited us was death. Just as misfortune seemed apparent, a small bird resembling a sparrow appeared out of nowhere and planted itself on top of the sail. It perched itself without a care in the world. Even with a raging storm stalking us, the bird was there to assure we saw the light through this dimly-lit tunnel. All it took was a bird to calm everyone down and give them hope. Everyone believed that the bird was a sign of a predestined fate because as soon as it appeared, a miracle happened. The Wellpark was our savior, and came just in the nick of time. Four hundred lives were saved and the reality of how fragile life was on full display that fateful day.

After we were rescued, the Wellpark continued its course with 346 new and relieved passengers on board. Two weeks passed and we docked in Taiwan. Shortly after, our new residence was Kensington, London. My family tried to adapt to our new life in England. London was archaic; it was a sight straight from the history books. We were surrounded by ancient buildings and architecture. I recall hearing the evening bells ringing throughout the seasons. I also remember the yellow street lights along the bridge guiding my path across the Thames River. As I gaze upon this beautiful scene, happy and sad emotions run amuck throughout my body as I reminisce about the loved ones left behind in Vietnam. After a couple of years in London, my second oldest sister was able to sponsor us to America. We prepared to leave London, but we would also leave our memories, friends, and times shared together.

Today, those who were blessed enough to be rescued by Wellpark, have an obligation and duty to thank and show how grateful they are towards the crew members of Wellpark. Their selfless a

Table-top wargamers from all over London and the Home Counties converged on a Dagenham school on Saturday and Sunday June 27/28 for the annual two-day Rampage wargames show.

More than 300 fans of the hobby were at All Saints' School, Terling Road, Becontree Heath to take part in two days of competitions set in several different historical periods. There was a public open day on the Sunday which saw demonstrations by several regional wargames clubs, traders selling new models and research material and a busy 'bring and buy' where unwanted hobby related items were recycled.

Rampage 2009 was organised by Ilford Wargames Club. This year's guest clubs included Dagenham, Hornchurch, Gravesend, Mid Anglia, Southend, Enfield, Braintree, South East Essex, Whitstable and Herne Bay, the Model Armoured Fighting Vehicle Association and the Lance and Longbow Society.

Table-top wargaming with miniatures first became popular in the UK in the 1960s with the arrival of cheap plastic models from Airfix and the pioneering books of Donald Featherstone and Peter Young. But earlier authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson and H.G.Wells had enjoyed the hobby - Wells wrote a book in the early 1900s called Little Wars. Wells thought it an enjoyable game for people of all ages but he'd also hoped it might serve anti-war purposes.

Modern wargaming is divided into real historical battles or fantasy combat based on science-fiction sources. This last has become almost a separate hobby for fans of Dungeons and Dragons and Warhammer. There is now a thriving cottage industry supplying model soldiers for almost every period, mostly made in white metal but plastics are once again becoming common as new manufacturers return to that material.

A spokesman for Ilford Wargames Group said: "Rampage is a showcase event for our hobby. It allows newcomers to come along and find out what wargaming with miniatures is all about as well as creating challenging competitions for experienced players."

Most table-top wargames use rules written to reflect the weapons and tactics of a chosen period. Tape measures are used to measure weapons ranges and a chance element - normally dice or cards - reflects the influence of the unknown. "However it is not about luck," said the spokesman, "Players have the rely of judgement, skill and out-thinking the opponent. It has been called 'chess with a thousand pieces' and that's a pretty accurate description."

One of the highlights of the show was a huge table at one end of the main hall replicating the Dam Busters raid of 1943 where players were allowed to try their hand at avoiding Luftwaffe night fighters and then fly low over a model lake in the face of intense anti-aircraft fire to drop 'bouncing bombs'. This game was presented by Whitstable and Herne Bay wargamers - one of the areas where the real-life bouncing bomb had been tested in 1943. Several original dummy bombs have been recovered in the Herne Bay area in recent years.

New Zealand film maker Peter Jackson (who directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy) is currently in pre-production for a re-make of the classic 1950s British film 'The Dam Busters'. Several replica Lancaster bombers have already been built in New Zealand while British author Stephen Fry is writing the script.

TulipK is a lamp shade I designed as a present to my wife. Its shape is inspired by a picture of tulips we had on our wedding invitation. I designed it fully in 3-matic and Excel (yes, I consider that design software too).

The shade has 6 tulip petals surrounding the light bulb. It includes a mechanism to make the flower open up. The petals are attached with hinges to a ring that is suspended from the ring attached to the light socket. Each petal has a small rod that slides through a slot in the latter ring. If you rotate the first ring with respect to the other, the rods slide through the slots and are pushed outward, making the petals open up. The idea was to have some kind of mechanical dimmer.

To make sure the petals become more and more translucent towards the top without jeopardizing the strength, I decided to punch holes through them rather than make them thinner. The holes were designed with Excel. I wrote a spread sheet to determine the locations of all 2374 holes punching through one petal and I create an STL for those. After that it was just a question of doing a Boolean subtraction and adding the rim.

Parrots are birds of the roughly 350 species in 85 genera that make up the order Psittaciformes, found in most warm and tropical regions. Also known as psittacines (pronounced /?s?t?sa?nz/),[1][2] they are usually grouped into two families: the Psittacidae (true parrots) and the Cacatuidae (cockatoos). Parrots have a pan-tropical distribution with several species inhabiting the temperate Southern Hemisphere as well. The greatest diversity of parrots is found in South America and Australasia.

Characteristic features of parrots include a strong curved bill, an upright stance, strong legs, and clawed zygodactyl feet. Most parrots are predominantly green, with other bright colors, and some species are multi-colored. Cockatoo species range from mostly white to mostly black, and have a mobile crest of feathers on the top of their heads. Most parrots are monomorphic or minimally sexually dimorphic. Extant species range in size from the Buff-faced Pygmy-parrot, at under 10 gm (0.35 oz.) in weight and 8 cm (3.2 inches) in length, to the Hyacinth Macaw, at 1.0 meter (3.3 feet) in length, and the Kakapo, at 4.0 kg (8.8 lbs) in weight. They are the most variably sized bird order in terms of length.

The most important components of most parrots' diets are seeds, nuts, fruit, buds and other plant material, and a few species also eat insects and small animals, and the lories and lorikeets are specialised to feed on nectar from flowers, and soft fruits. Almost all parrots nest in tree holes (or nestboxes in captivity), and lay white eggs from which emerge altricial (helpless) young.

Parrots, along with crows, jays and magpies, are some of the most intelligent birds, and the ability of some parrot species to imitate human voices enhances their popularity as pets. Trapping of wild parrots for the pet trade, as well as other hunting, habitat loss and competition from invasive species, have diminished wild populations, and parrots have been subjected to more exploitation than any other group of birds.[3] Recent conservation measures to conserve the habitats of some of the high-profile charismatic parrot species has also protected many of the less charismatic species living in the ecosystem.

The broad-tailed parrots, subfamily Platycercinae, are restricted to Australia, New Zealand and Pacific islands as far as Fiji. The final true parrot subfamily, Psittacinae, includes a range of species from Australia and New Guinea to the species found in South Asia and Africa. The centre of cockatoo biodiversity is Australia and New Guinea, although some species reach the Solomon Islands (and one species formerly occurred in New Caledonia),[15] Indonesia and the Philippines.

Several parrot species enter the cool, temperate regions of South America and New Zealand. One species, the Carolina Parakeet existed in temperate North America, but was hunted to extinction in the early 20th century. Numerous species have been introduced in areas with temperate climates, and have established stable populations. The Monk Parakeet currently breeds in at least 15 U.S. states.

While a few parrot species are wholly sedentary or fully migratory, the majority fall somewhere between the two, making poorly understood regional movements, some species adopting an entirely nomadic lifestyle.
The most obvious physical characteristic that characterises parrots is their strong, curved, broad bill. The upper mandible is prominent, curves downward, and comes to a point. It is not fused to the skull, which allows it to move independently, and contributes to the tremendous biting pressure these birds are able to exert. The lower mandible is shorter, with a sharp, upward facing cutting edge, which moves against the flat portion of the upper mandible in an anvil-like fashion.
