Common Raven- Adult Male Courtship Display
Male and female ravens look the same so it is only possible to identify their sex by observing their unique displays and certain vocalizations, although males are larger. Note the iridescent blue-black plumage in bright sunlight, as opposed to the dull, brownish-tinged plumage of the juvenile. The raised "ear" tufts on the head and the flared belly feathers or "pants" hiding his skinny legs and making him look bigger, seem to be a courtship display, as is the stick probably.
Dominance displays are somewhat similar except the body and head are held very erect while throat feathers are puffed out with the bill raised in order to make them look bigger. This display would probably not be tolerated if he was in a group of ravens as it could be viewed as a challenge and invite attack by more dominant birds. Less dominant birds are not permitted to display and make significantly fewer vocalizations when in a group. Dominance is determined by size, the largest males being the most dominant.
I think the stick thing may be a male behaviour during courtship season as he seemed to intently display it to the female here. There are reports of male crows having a stick in their mouth in pre-copulatory displays and during copulation.
