The hunt for Joseph Kony has been marked by one spectacular failure after another. In 2006, in an unprecedented move, the United Nations mounted a covert operation to capture or kill him. A squad of U.S.-trained Guatemalan Special Ops soldiers set out into Congo's Garamba National Park, a longtime LRA refuge and the scene of last year's Operation Lightning Thunder. Trained in jungle warfare and accustomed to surviving in the bush for long stretches, the Guatemalans were equipped with M-16s and the latest special-operations technology. But they were no match for Kony and his CHILD WARRIORS. Makassa recalls the day the Guatemalans appeared. He had left Garamba park briefly to pick up food and supplies in southern Sudan, just across the border. On his way back he got a call: "The situation is bad. Unknown soldiers came to fight us. Hurry up and help us." The caller described the unknown soldiers as muzungu—a Swahili word meaning "white man."

By the time Makassa reached the scene, the battle was over. Five LRA soldiers had been killed. But not one of the Guatemalans had survived. The LRA fighters slaughtered them all and, according to one account, beheaded the commander. Some reports put the U.N. dead at eight; others say as many as 40 counterinsurgency troops may have died that morning. The LRA left the corpses in the jungle but took the weapons—including heavy machine guns and grenade launchers.

Jer, čak i kada ne bi postojala sva ta prirodna korisnost, mi ipak ne bismo osećali da išta nedostaje tim prirodnim uzrocima da bi bili dovoljni za tu osobinu; naprotiv, čak i kada bismo samo zahtevali jedan takav plan, i kada bismo prirodi pripisivali jednu takvu svrhu (pošto je ionako sama najveća uzajamna netrpeljivost ljudi bila u stanju da ih rastura po tako negostoljubivim predelima), to bi nam i samima izgledalo drsko i nepromišljeno.

In the literature of economics the word equilibrium covers a multitude of ideas and a vacaous substitutes for thought. It's pervasive presence and the ascendency it's serious meanings have exercised show plainly that it 'does something' for the economic theoretician. What does it do? It enables him to exhibit the economic world as determinate, explicable, calculable, and even predictable. Equilibrium is orderliness, harmony, the advancement of one's own interest by serving that of others. Equilibrium is interactive rationality, the recognition that society is an organism. Above all, it is the necessary condition, the basis and sanction of proof. Pride in proof is legitimate. Proof is certainty, an end to debate, and it is more, in the scale of values and sensibilities of many of us. Proof is beauty.

Sir John Hicks' paper was the first presentation of IS–LM and has been for forty or more years the most famous and the most influetial interpretation of Keynes. Central and essential to it's argument is a notion of equilibrium. In 'IS-LM: An Explenation' Sir John asks himself with stringency and answers with candor the question whether the notion of 'a period' with given history behind it and an unknown future beyond it can be so defined and used that equilibrium can play its part and work its magic. He finds for his equilibrium-based entity a role shrunken and less confidently played, but still not to be hissed of the stage. In this 'explanation' Sir John stil does not seem to me to acknowledge the essential point: the elemental core of Keynes' economic society is uncertain expectation, and uncertain expectation is wholly incompatible and in conflict with the notion of equilibrium.
