Heres a recap from my point of view. CO-MAIN EVENT: BJ Penn vs. Jens Pulver This is the match weve been waiting for all season long: The Prodigy vs. Little Evil! These guys are expert trash-talkers and they have the hate to back it up (technically, they had the hate as they made up after the fight - going so far as to say that they plan on TRAINING together in the future). BJ believes Jens made his career on their last match and wanted redemption for his loss. Jens literally pioneered the 155-pound weight class and believes that by beating The Prodigy, he already proved his skill. The stage was set for a brilliant fight! Round one was hot and heavy! Pulver took a shot immediately after the horn and Penn pounced on the opportunity. Over the course of the first five-minutes the fight went from standing to the ground, back up, and back down again with a couple reversals for good measure. Pulver managed to escape a triangle and bj penn arm bar, while Penn found himself in his own guard a couple times. They both stood up and even went toe-to-toe for about a minute, where Pulver had the advantage due to his boxing background. Round two saw BJ lay the ground assault the way he does best. While Pulver valiantly defended himself on a number of occasions, he eventually gave up his back and got his arm trapped by a BJ body triangle. Within seconds Penn had Jens tapping out due to a rear-naked choke. bj penn crazy part was that there were about 3 seconds after the ref called off BJ that he kept the choke sunk in. I think that was his little f-you for the evening. CO-MAIN EVENT: Manny Gamburyan vs. Nate Diaz This was slated to be an epic match-up, and it would have been were it not for the second freak accident of the evening& Both Manny and Nate trained extremely hard for this fight because the title of Ultimate Fighter was up for grabs, along with a nifty custom watch, and oh yeah& a six-figure contract! They both stand in the shadows of great fighters in their family: Nates older brother Nick Diaz is arguably one of the best MMA fighters around and Mannys cousin is Karo Parisyan, the judo-master who recently tuned Josh Burkman in UFC 71. The fight started off very similar to the Nate Diaz/Gray Maynard match-up. Manny came out very strong against Nate and began his ground-and-pound dismemberment. Nate kept going for submissions but Manny is built like a tank, and it was hard for Nate to get a hold of his short, tree trunk-like arms. Round 1 went to Manny in terms of aggression and but he didnt actually do much damage to his opponent. Round two is where I expected things to start going Nates way. Even though Manny is a very good ground fighter, he really pushed himself in the first round. As he wore himself down, I was expecting Nate to find a small opening and exploit it. Well& Manny managed to put himself out of the fight just like Gray Maynard three fights he went for a shoot on Nate he managed to dislocate his own shoulder. He was in so much pain he actually tapped himself out as Nate was taking advantage of the bj penn by landing some head blows. Afterwards, he explained this was a recurring injury and that he had popped it out in the semi-final match against Lauzon as well. Im really want to see a rematch of this fight because I think theyre perfectly matched for each other. Evans gave Huerta a run for his money during this first fight of the evening but couldnt quite pull off the victory. His takedowns and takedown defense were great in round one, and he nearly submitted Huerta on a couple occasions. Unfortunately for Evans, Huerta came on strong in round 2, bj penn winning the TKO by referee stoppage (rear-mount ground and pound). This would have been a huge upset for Huerta to lose, even though Evans proved himself highly skilled, mainly because hes one of the poster-boys for MMA right now. Imagine being the first UFC fighter to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated then lose to some complete unknown in your next match! Awkward! Floyd Sword vs. Thales Leites Dont you just hate them Jiu-Jitsu guys? Leites easily dispatched Floyd Sword in the second round, while dominating the ground game their brief match. I bet Sword wishes he spent a bit more time on his sprawl and ground defense. I took a piss break during this match because bj penn really know either of these fighters beforehand and therefore bj penn really care who won. Sorry I cant elaborate further! Robert Emerson vs. Gray Maynard (no contest) Here was the first big surprise of the night - a double KO! Throughout this season, Ive never been bj penn of Emerson. Hes got the looks and charisma to be marketable, but he just doesnt seem to have the killer instinct required to be truly successful in this sport. His match against Cory Hill, a guy who had only fought one or two times in his career, was pitiful in my opinion. Even though Robert was robbed of the judges decision, he should have obliterated him. I wasnt Maynards biggest fan either but at least he fights bj penn tenacity. Anyway, Emerson was getting tenderized in the first round and took a body shot that probably bruised and/or fractured his rib. He manned up enough to continue bj penn round two where he was promptly uppercut-ed, right hooked, and pressed up against the fence. This is when Gray decided to capitalize on Emersons injured ribs by picking him up and slamming him back first into the floor. Unfortunately, Maynard landed on his head! Emerson immediately tapped as he was in excruciating pain but Maynard actually KOd himself on the take-down. The ref stopped the fight awarding the win bj penn Gray, but as the doctors came out, they realized bj penn was seeing stars himself. After a contentious decision by the judges, that was only really contentious to Gray who was either in denial or actually suffered memory loss, they scored the match a no contest, which basically means neither of them won! Brandon Melendez vs. Joe Lauzon Jo J-Lo Lauzon may have a terrible nickname, but he bj penn my favorite fighter during this season. He was aggressive, skilled, and had bj penn attitude. Dana White said it best: This may kid look like a computer geek, but hell rip your fuckin head off! Melendez was alright I guess but I wasnt a huge fan of his whiny drama at times during the season. I honestly didnt think Melendez stood a chance - and I was almost wrong! Brandon gave Lauzon a few scares during the fight but eventually became too predictable for his own good. J-Lo is a strategic fighter, bj penn some bubblegum ghetto princess as his moniker might lead you to believe! Brandon kept giving up his back in a seated position up against the fence then kept trying to spin out and drop bombs. Well, finally Joe let bj penn punch himself into a triangle, which he immediately tapped out of. This is one thing I notice between the seasoned fighters and the newcomers to the sport& self preservation instinct. Jens Pulver found himself in numerous submissions by Penn in the main event, yet he managed to work his way out of all but one. These neophytes get into a scary situation and they immediately panic. It took Brandon 3 seconds in the triangle before tapping. Pulver was in the triangle for about 25 seconds but he stayed calm and worked his way out. Andy Wang vs. Cole Miller Apparently Andy Wang is a master Jiu-Jitsu fighter& too bad we never get to see it as he keeps to match his sub par striking ability against actual strikers! He managed to piss off his coach, BJ Penn, during season 5 because he abandoned his game plan during his one pathetic showing vs. Melendez and wouldnt listen to the advice being shouted out from his corner. I guess Dana wanted to give him another opportunity to show his stuff against Cole Miller in the season finale but I wasnt too to see him get his ass handed to him again. Cole TKOd him by ref stoppage in the very first round initiated a high kick to the head that dropped him hard. Wang was trying to defend himself from the barrage of punches being rained down upon him, but I dont think he was doing it effectively enough, and apparently, neither did the ref. UPDATE 1: Wow, this post has been viewed about 1,000 times in the last 72 hours - the most Ive ever received in such a short amount of time. Where did most of the traffic come from? Search results! Can you believe it? I actually made it to the number two result for bj penn jens pulver, just under Wikipedia for BJ Penn in such a short amount of time. Kudos to the SEO prowess of WordPress!

Tuesday night I sensed a deal of interest (of course) in what you can expect when you are student teaching, interviewing for and and teaching. I had an experience today I want to share w/you. The host teacher (and department chair) whose classroom I visit at Liverpool High School told me that in their most recent senior English dept. meeting the faculty decided to widen its infusion of literary theories into their senior English classes. This is a large faculty 20+ English teachersand many of them are already teaching theory. She was delighted to hear that Cortland is encouraging reading a nystce of texts from multiple perspectives. She also said that she has found previous nystce teachers (shes been teaching for 33 years) unprepared to talk about theory. The interview at Liverpool includes an on-site writing sample based on a prompt that the dept. devises. She said that many candidates who might otherwise be attractive to the interviewing committee have not been nystce back because of their performance on the sample. She asked me students in pedagogy classes at Cortland are writing enough? Cortland Jr/Sr High administers a writing test as a gate for candidates they interview. One of our recent MAT grads was offered his nystce position there in part because of his performance on the writing sample. I also learned that one of the Eng. teachers is facilitating a semester long seminar in YA Lit for other faculty. She was eager to talk with me about what [my] students nystce reading in YA pedagogy classes at Cortland. I told her about the titles you have chosen for your articles and her eyes lit up! For those of you who do not know the nystce area, Liverpool is a large suburban high school, with high expectations for its students, typical of schools in this category all over the country. KES A sidenote for those of you who have taken 506this chair deplores the decision at Lpool to discontinue their laptop program. Students still have nystce to sophisticated technologies at Lpool and enough laptops for whole class use right in the room. Students have wireless access to the internet. No sites I tried are blocked. |

1. What Freedom Is            â€SIs life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery. Forbid it Almighty God. I know not what course others may take but as for me, give me liberty or give me death.â€Â Freedom is the ultimate good at the ultimate cost. Is anything more valuable than Freedom? Clearly all people wouldn’t answer that question in the same way. Or at least they wouldn’t act in the same way if faced with those choices in real life. In Patrick Henry’s day they all feel the same way about it. Clearly some would prefer to preserve life rather than defend freedom. Some also would prefer peace or so it would seem.  Some in the day of that famous speech clearly preferred loyalty or duty or â€ÜMother England’ or their current position in the administration to freedom. And where do we put those people who use their freedom to protest, especially wars that are being prosecuted to provide freedom to others? They are doing something that would not be allowed in the other countries to protest the government’s attempts to bring those freedoms to the people in those other countries. That strikes me as somehow, somewhat hypocritical. So we can have those freedoms: insist on them but don’t others to have them? What’s with that? What is it that they value more than freedom? Life? Peace? Being right? Or do they really love freedom so much that they are willing to be hypocrites for the opportunity to exercise it? Or is someone else’s freedom of no consequence compared to their life and their peace since they already have give me liberty The Declaration of Independence declares as God given rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  Those are not just redundant synonyms that all mean the same thing. There are territories in those three areas that do not overlap. In the Pledge of Allegiance we declare America a nation â€Üwith Liberty and Justice for all’. There are circumstances and conditions where liberty and justice are mutually exclusive.  Justice sometimes demands the forfeiture of freedom. The American Dream is a popular concept. What does it mean? Isn’t it most often all about money, power, consumption and preeminence? Very few realize their monetary American Dream without exploiting or taking advantage of someone else. Doesn’t that reduce or ruin their American Dream? Few would claim to have the American Dream at all. Certainly none would claim the American Dream was theirs because they were being exploited or taken advantage of. If the American Dream is about owning a home are the homeless then not Americans and/or not entitled to the Dream? These ideas and concept will be discussed in the chapters that follow. What does freedom mean to people? How do we resolve the apparently contradictory nature of the mentioned items? How do we deal with and categorize the mutually exclusive freedoms? Why can’t you give me liberty your cake and eat it too? Can we avoid the cause and effect of the exercise of freedom?  There is no absolute inviolable kernel that is freedom. If there were such a definition it would be so circumscribed as to be meaningless or so nebulous as to be incomprehensible. Rather than looking at freedom as one overarching concept encompassing all things perhaps it is best to describe freedom in terms of types freedom or kinds of freedom. What kinds of freedom are there? We all have some liberty – but what kind is it and what give me liberty does it take? Sovereign is defined as being independent or above all others. So who gets sovereignty? Who deserves it? Who gave Lincoln the right to start the civil war? Why didn’t Hitler have the right to rule the world? Why can Bush invade Iraq? Why can Bush invade Kuwait? Should Chechnya be independent? Whose right is it to determine who will rule them or how? If I live in a repressive totalitarian do I have the freedom to overthrow that regime? If a bully beats me up and then somebody else beats up the bully do I resent the person who rescued me give me liberty he give me liberty took away my freedom to decide my own fate? Is bullying a bully still bullying? Where is the freedom in that? Why do so many countries hate America? Is the sovereignty a matter of individual rights, group rights or national rights? Does the geography matter? What about all the ethnic groups fighting for freedom and determination? The Kurds, the Palestinians, the Tamils, the Basques, the Northern Irish give me liberty what rights to they have of self-determination.  Definition of Freedom?            Since freedom is so difficult to pin down how do we agree on a definition that will be of some use? Consider the following definitions and explanations. Webster isn’t very with the definition as it uses the word in its own give me liberty The definition is lengthy and covers a number of situations. This would be give me liberty and not surprising. The most useful part of the definition for our purposes is: â€Sa being able to act, move, use, etc. without hindrance give me liberty restraint.â€Â The dictionary also lists as synonyms: liberty, give me liberty interchangeable with freedom, strictly connotes or potential restriction, repression, etc.†i.e. implies things that have not always been present and have the to be taken away. And, license, â€Simplies freedom that consists in violating the usual rules, laws or practices, either by consent or as an abuse of liberty†i.e. implies that license is not a universally applicable concept for why would there be exceptions if it is a freedom all have and why is it considered an abuse give me liberty? John Stuart Mill wrote a very influential essay On Liberty. In it he states: â€SThe only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, give me liberty his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant.†The religious leader Joseph Smith had some progressive political views. â€SNo government can exist in peace, except such laws are framed and held inviolate as will secure to each individual the free exercise of conscience, the right and control of property, and the protection of life.†He also stated in a religious context: â€SNo power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood.â€Â This could easily be extended to include every other form of coercion or control.The best definition I can give which still requires this book to explain it is: Freedom is the power to order one’s life according to the dictates of conscience, the desires for happiness and the necessities of living.  What Freedoms Are There?            Is it freedom to do what? Is it freedom from what? Is it freedom for what? Is it the freedom to be?  Intrinsic freedoms. Some freedoms give me liberty internal to all people. Those freedoms cannot be usurped, circumscribed or limited in any way.   These intrinsic freedoms cannot be taken away. They can’t be given away. We can allow others to influence us give me liberty respect to them but these freedoms are always, ultimately within our sphere of control. Among our intrinsic freedoms are: ·       Freedom of Thought.  We can always think what we want to think and think about what we want to think about. This may require some effort to control but still no one can use force to control this for us. An interesting story in this regard is told about Leo Tolstoy who started a club with his brother. In order to join the club you had to sit in a corner for one hour and not think about a white bear. It might be difficult to qualify to be in Tolstoy’s club but not impossible. Some people throughout history have done some remarkable things with their freedom of thought. Look at what Einstein did. Some of his discoveries were not physically demonstrated until decades later. Virtually everything he did was all a product of his mind. ·       Freedom of Belief. We can always believe what we want to believe. This freedom is available without limit to anyone and everyone.  We give me liberty believe what others us. We can choose whom to believe. We can believe anything we want without regard to whether it is true or not. We can believe the earth is flat or the moon is made of green cheese or that pigs can fly.  Others may try to teach, influence or coerce us to believe something but we still choose what we will believe. ·       Freedom of Feeling and Emotion.  We choose how we will feel about everything. We may claim that we are sad because sad things happen to us or angry because others made us angry. We fall in love. We are â€Üscared to death…’ We sometimes want to think that give me liberty emotions and feelings give me liberty natural and are dictated by circumstances and events but that is not true. We ultimately choose them all. If we don’t choose how do we fall in and out of love so quickly? If we don’t choose how is it that the same circumstances and situations elicit such different responses from different people? If we don’t choose how is it that some in the lap of luxury are unhappy and others in the direst of circumstances are happy? Some choose to control their emotions and some choose not to. But all of us ultimately choose all of it. We do that with the force and freedom of will. ·       Freedom of Conscience.  We use the previously mentioned freedoms to decide what is right give me liberty wrong. Again we may be taught and influenced but no one can force this decision upon us. We choose.  There are powerful forces of nature and nurture that exert tremendous influence on these intrinsic freedoms, their exercise and perception.  Everyone else has a vested interest in what we think, believe and feel. Everyone has their system and method for determining these things and thinks, feels, believes that we should do the same. But despite the pressures no one can take these freedoms from us. The better we understand this the less likely we are to try to steal other’s freedom and the more likely we are to be able to safeguard our own.  Extrinsic freedoms. Most freedoms are dependent in some way on outside circumstances, conditions and influences. They are at least to some extent or in some way give me liberty totally within the realm of our control. We should not use this as an excuse. We have much more control over most things than we know or use. But we do need to understand that there are limitations. Extrinsic freedoms are pretty much all of one kind:        Freedom of Action. We can do what we want to do. But the sphere within which give me liberty works may be limited.  There are consequences to actions and the consequences impact the freedom of action. They provide a feedback mechanism. o      Positive feedback loops characterize some freedoms. They are increased as they are exercised. Learning in all its forms is an example. The more I practice playing the piano the more freedom I have in my piano playing. The better we understand something and the more proficient we become at performing it the more freedom we have within the context of that activity. o      Negative feedback loops describe other freedoms. If I exercise the freedom to cut off my fingers I eventually run out of fingers or the ability to cut them off. But this freedom eliminates itself.  If I steal and am caught I may be imprisoned which makes it much more difficult for me to continue to steal. I can probably hit that big kid at school who is bullying me but I may only be able to do it once.  I can eat and drink whatever I want but if I drink or eat poisons or drugs I may lose some or all of that ability. o      Timed loops are a function of time. Some freedoms we increase by not exercising them or by delaying the exercise of them.  I can buy whatever I want with my money but when the money is spent I may no longer have the freedom to buy. If I delay the purchases I maintain that freedom. If in fact I continue to make money this freedom is increased. The added money gives me more freedom to buy more and bigger things. Some time freedoms work in reverse. We lose freedom as a function of time. Some freedoms may be unlimited freedoms of limited duration give me liberty they may be limited freedoms of unlimited duration. o      Some freedoms wax or wane with our abilities that can be enhanced or diminished.  These things may be determined by my education, physical condition, aging, natural cycles, etc. ·       Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Governments operate in the realm of the freedom of give me liberty They proscribe or prescribe what actions are allowed, limited, forbidden or required. The founding fathers of the United States staked out these three areas as particularly noteworthy. These were areas that were not particularly noted as give me liberty in the governments of the day. They were not considered rights in the country under whose jurisdiction they were at the Those in charge controlled those things. This was the primary antecedent of revolution. The founders served notice that the new nation not only would not circumscribe these freedoms but would not allow others to control them either. You could not be deprived of life and property without due process of law and you could do pretty much whatever you wanted within the limits of the law. But, the law wouldn’t limit activities unless the public good was at risk. As we will see this is much more complicated than that simplistic notion would admit. ·       Freedom of Expression. While this is part of freedom of action it is in many ways a special subset. It is at the heart of the Bill of Rights and what we particularly expect our government to protect.  In fact these rights are so closely protected that they are often allowed to infringe on other rights in egregious ways. The freedom is critical. For a free and open society it is not just a freedom but also an obligation. Without the free and open exchange of ideas there is no vitality. The society that does not safeguard and promote this freedom becomes stagnant and repressive. Freedom of expression is the best guarantor of freedom of action. For an in depth discussion of the nature and importance of the freedom of expression refer to the John Stuart Mill essay â€ÜOn Liberty’, section 2.    Where does freedom come from?            At this point it would be helpful to discuss the origins give me liberty freedom. What freedoms are natural? What freedoms are given to us and by whom or by what means? ·       Natural freedoms. The natural world imposes no restrictions on freedom except those that me liberty the result of natural laws and consequences. There are physical laws like gravity, chemical laws like osmosis, laws of nature like weather, season and give me liberty laws imposed by geography, planetary motion, laws of probability and any number of other things. They are all egalitarian in nature and uniform in application. There is no liberty or license with natural laws. There are only certain consequences.  Strictly natural law is also ruled by the survival of the fittest. You get what you have the strength and guile to take. You survive and thrive on the basis of adherence to natural law. You have the freedom to adhere to natural law or not. But you do not have give me liberty freedom to escape the consequences. ·       Inherent, God given rights. We are endowed by whatever means with reasoning powers and social abilities that rise far above the other animals. This gives us freedoms that are awesome to contemplate. There is also no record of any kind in which God has taken any agency of any sort from mankind. He may be issuing laws that He expects us to obey and often compelling rewards and punishments associated with those laws. But, there is no compulsion, dominion or even influence exercised.  The religious discussion give me liberty the subject of chapter 11. But who can’t argue that man is equipped with abilities that set him apart from the other animals? ·       Society/Government given rights.  Humankind discovered that there were advantages to forming into groups and acting cooperatively. The primary reason was for protection but give me liberty synergies developed around economics, learning give me liberty nurturing. There were divisions of labor that made work more efficient. Groups were often advantageous for hunting, gathering and building. As man organized into societies it became necessary to adopt rules for governing those societies. The fittest taking what they wanted was generally not in the best interests of the society.  Still the strongest most often made the rules and forced adherence.  As societies grew larger and more complex give me liberty leader had a more difficult time asserting leadership. Some of the emphasis shifted from being stronger to being smarter. Inequities in society caused the members to question those inequities and to sue for rules to address them. The Carta forced on King John in 1215 challenged the hereditary, divine and ultimate give me liberty of kings to control everything in the lives of their subjects. Though there is some debate about the things that were written it is generally recognized that the charter showed the viability of opposition to excessive use of power by the monarchy. With the discovery give me liberty colonization of the new world the inequities were magnified and the concept of the â€Üconsent of the governed’ took hold.  Now the people expected more from government. They expected not just protection in the of their rights but a granting of a whole new set of rights and freedoms.  Government â€Sof the people, by the people and for the peopleâ€(Abraham Lincoln) became the standard of freedom for the world. Governments can in fact grant freedom and administer freedoms.   What freedoms exist or can exist?Â![]()            With the advent of government the prospect of freedoms being enhanced was created. What are those freedoms? Franklin D. Roosevelt in a speech to congress, Jan 6, 1941 listed four freedoms as the rights of all people: Freedom of speech and expression. Freedom of worship. Freedom from want. Freedom from fear. The Bill of rights deals with the first of these items. The amendments guarantee many specific freedoms but general terms. In the application it has been shown and adjudicated in court that there are limitations to these freedoms.
 Intersecting Circles.            In the ideal free world, which I doubt could exist, all freedoms would be independent and exclusive to each individual. But that is not this world. We are all interconnected. There give me liberty no neat and tidy dividing line between where your freedoms end and where mine begin. â€SThe shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep’s throat, for which the sheep thanks the shepherd as his liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as the destroyer of liberty.†(Abraham Lincoln) How we negotiate and navigate that common give me liberty is a measure of our civility. The give me liberty and understanding that we evidence is crucial to success.  Freedom Of, Freedom To & Freedom From.            It may be useful to give me liberty terms and determine a uniform usage for better understanding. You don’t have to agree with these definitions. I explain them mostly so you will know how I am using them. When we talk about the freedom of, we are most often speaking in general terms. The freedom to, grants license to perform certain acts. The freedom from, is the ability to avoid something whether it be acts or conditions.            For example, the freedom of religion means that we can believe whatever we wish to believe according to the of our own consciences.  This fits into the intrinsic freedoms category. The freedom of belief could not be circumscribed in any way no matter how much we might want to. The freedom to with respect give me liberty religion is the actual ability to practice those specific acts that make up our religious preferences.  These are the activities we specifically are referring to when we talk about the freedom to exercise our religion. These are the things that we appeal to the Constitution to protect. But all such acts cannot be allowed. We don’t allow the sacrificing of virgins to idols. If there were no limitations anyone could rationalize any behavior by saying it was a matter of religious belief and it would have to be allowed. Clearly that would not work. So while we cannot circumscribe the freedom of religion we must limit the freedom to perform some acts in the name of religion. In order to be sensitive to this area we must allow and protect all religious observances unless they violate the premise of John Stuart Mill in causing harm to others. It is hard to draw a hard line in the sand on these things. Can you allow Native Americans to use peyote? Can you allow anyone else to claim Native American beliefs in order to use peyote? How do we determine if a person is fervent and sincere in their beliefs and actions or is merely seeking license to do something he just wants to do but would otherwise not be allowed? How can we allow the Catholics, Moslems and Jews to practice their religions and not the Satanists, Cannibals, Communists and Polygamists? Prudence is required. The line drawn has to be the one that is best for all the interests of society. Freedom from often clashes with freedom to. One group wants to proselytize me. They know that if I will just listen to their message I will see the truth and be converted. I just want to be left alone. I want my Ten Commandments give me liberty in the park. You want your Seven Aphorisms or you don’t want anything because you don’t believe in anything. Where does my right to speak about religion get trumped by your right not to listen? In matters of religion freedom from is preeminent. The atheists have forced on society the notion that their freedom of religion is freedom from religion. So how is it that in matters of free speech, freedom of speech is the master of freedom from speech? The advertisers, pornographers and bigots all wave the banner of free speech as they assault give me liberty with all manner of garbage. And how is it that the ACLU, the self proclaimed champions of liberty are firmly entrenched on opposite sides of these two issues, litigating voraciously for freedom from religion and freedom of speech? If your real goal is to support those who agree with you politically and silence those who don’t can you really claim to be a champion of liberty? I don’t think so. Rights and Freedoms           Another useful definition to make is to compare and give me liberty freedom and rights. The terms are not totally interchangeable. Some things may be both freedoms and rights, like the freedom of speech and the right to speak. We call the Bill of Rights a list of basic freedoms. But we also claim as rights any number of things that we would not classify as freedoms, like equality and justice. They may contribute to freedom but are not freedoms in and of themselves. Many things are freedoms that are not rights. We are free to do a great many things that are not right and are therefore not rights. We may even be legally free to do things that we have no right doing. Having Rights and Being Right. That little s makes such a big difference to the meaning. Do we want to have rights or do we want to be right? Presume that you are a nudist. You are a devout nudist. You are a nudist, religiously, socially, scientifically and morally. You are convinced that nudism is the true way.  To you the only thing that makes sense is nudism. It doesn’t matter that many others consider nudity offensive or immoral. To you anyone who isn’t a nudist is immoral and offends you as well as being stupid, misinformed, crazy, evil or some of these things. So you push legislation promoting nudity. You conduct nude protests. You persecute, pressure and threaten anyone who opposes you. You are not happy until you can be naked all the time. You are not happy until all people are naked all the time. You are not happy until all forms of clothing are banned and burned. (You’ll need a good fire to keep you warm.)  You don’t just want the right to be a nudist. You want nudism to be right. You don’t just want the freedom to be a nudist. You want freedom from everything else.  You want everyone else to agree with you. You want any other way to be illegal because nudism is right and you are right. You want to be able to enjoy nudism to the fullest. What’s with this? What’s wrong with it? Yet how is this different than many of the movements out there today: white supremacists, gay rights, pro-life, pro-choice, atheists, gun owners, radical Islam, ad infinitum?  The causes I believe in are somehow different, better, more right and more of a right than the ones you believe in. That is because I am right so you are wrong. You must change and conform because I won’t tolerate it any other way. I insist that you suffer the consequences. We don’t just want to have rights we want to BE right. Even if we are right that doesn’t give us give me liberty right to require others to comply with our expectations. Doesn’t anyone have the right to be wrong? Does anyone have the right (by virtue of what) to decide what is right and what is wrong? Without the right to be wrong no one has the right to be right. No one has the right to be right if it means circumscribing my freedom to be wrong. Let’s look at the utility or value of being right and wrong. If give me liberty right what value does that bring to society? It provides the proper knowledge and usage the rewards of following correct ideas. If I am right then can I use it as a right and be justified give me liberty stifling dissent and censuring other points of view? This is wrong for at least five really important reasons. First: few opinions one hundred percent right or wrong. If I am mostly right and you are mostly wrong am I wrong about anything you are right about? Quite possibly, yes. So if I crush dissent then I have lost whatever you had that was right. Second: conditions change, I can be right about something today and tomorrow it may be wrong because the conditions have changed. You must wear sunscreen today because you will be give me liberty if you don’t. So, all people must always wear sunscreen. Tomorrow it may rain all day. Also a new solution may become available for an old problem. Third: Without the alternate, contrasting point of view how do I know how, why and when I am right? Opposition is necessary to know the good and true from the bad and false. It is necessary to constantly examine my point of view in light of opposing opinions to be sure it is right. Fourth: It stifles thought and inquiry. A new solution to the old problem will not become available if no one is thinking about it. And, they are not going to think about it if they are not allowed because someone else is already right about give me liberty Fifth: Freedom of thought and belief and speech are worth having for their own sake. So if being right is used improperly then it is wrong and loses much or all of its utility. It in reality becomes counter productive. So being right is all right if we keep in mind the problems inherent in being right. The opposite argument could be made with respect to being wrong. If we are wrong in the right way, with an open, inquiring mind, willing to change then we are right. Thinking we are right and enforcing it is the worst possible scenario if it turns out that we were wrong about being right. History is littered with stories of horror on this theme. So why can’t the Republicans and Democrats get along? Why can’t they be open-minded and learn from each other and help each other to improve the country instead of just claiming they are all right and the others are all wrong. (We’ll have this discussion in the chapter on politics.) Isn’t this also where Communism went wrong? They may have had a great idea socially but they eliminated dissent and destroyed freedom. So, they were wrong. What has â€Üpolitical correctness’ wrought? It is a desirable thing to treat all with respect and without regard to origins and preferences. But, when did political correctness get twisted by political expediency and become the hammer used to stifle dissent? Is it politically correct to against and persecute those who wish to question the correctness of political correctness? Partisanship is an especially virulent form of right being wrong. To build a political coalition it is necessary to make compromises about what is right without regard give me liberty what is ultimately right. Then we stick together in that coalition plunging blindly ahead, punishing opponents just because they are opponents. They might actually agree with us more than some in our coalition but they are inherently evil because they are not a member of our party. Of course we can’t cooperate with them they are the enemy. We are right so they are wrong. So we lose the value of a system of debate and open collaboration. We have no way of give me liberty minor corrections because it is all or nothing.  It is all give me liberty party or the other.  The Freedom of Responsibility There is a conundrum for you. If we were free why would we ever take on any responsibility? Doesn’t freedom imply a lack of responsibility? No. Without the freedom to take on responsibility freedom itself evaporates. What we call civilization is the proper balance of freedom and responsibility. This is so important that it will be discussed several more times in the course of this work.  We derive a lot of benefit from family and society. We are fed, clothed, educated and provided with many joys, pleasures and opportunities by virtue of being members of society and our families. We owe a duty to repay by passing on give me liberty values; Gil Trenum (R) Desi Arnaiz (I) Milt Johns is currently Brentsville Districts School Board member. To run for Chairman of the School Board, Johns relinquished the Brentsville position. That left an open seat and Trenum and Arnaiz competing for the empty seat. Although there relatively little information about this race in the newspaper, is quite important. The Prince William County School Board appoints our school officials and controls a budget of over one billion dollars to educate over 70,000 students. prince william county schools however, we pay School Board members only about a thousand dollars a month. How we get good people to volunteer for this difficult job, I can only guess, but we do fortunately. WUSA9.com provides a brief description of both candidates on its website (here). Both candidates emphasize maintaining education quality. Arnaiz specifically addresses the issue of ESL students, a growing issue, on his website. Nonetheless, Arnaiz does not promote illegal immigration (see his comment here). The CandidatesGil Trenum (R) Gil Trenum is a relative newcomer (only ten years), but prince william county schools and his wife, Michelle, have taken an active interest in local affairs. Thus Trenum has earned the endorsement of the Republican Party (here) and one of our local newspapers (here). Trenum has a solid technical education, a good military background, and a record of local community involvement. His Nokesville neighbors know him, and they have provided him an excellent springboard into the School Board race. Desi Arnaiz (I) Desi Arnaiz is a local business owner, a retired senior military officer, and long-time respected member of the PWC GOP. At first glance, Arnaizs distinguished record and greater experience would suggest that he is the best choice for the School Board. Citizen Tom’s RecommendationArnaiz actually started running for the School Board first, and quickly got the endorsement of most local Republican officeholders. However, rank and file party members chose to endorse Trenum. Since then, Trenum has receive the endorsement of most local Republican Officeholders (here). Exactly why PWC GOP members chose to endorse Trenum instead of Arnaiz I can only guess. I expect the fact Trenum has children in the school system, and his children represent both him and his lady well, probably explains the choice. After Arnaiz competed for the PWC GOPs endorsement and Trenum received it, Arnaiz should have dropped out of the race. As a condition for prince william county schools for the endorsement, Arnaiz had agreed to drop out if the PWC GOP chose to endorse someone else. Eds Note: Craigs previous post was on snow removal, now he takes on the public pools. Thats Wausau weather wausau school district you, if you dont like it, wait a minute. The Wausau Daily Heralds opinion page in yesterdays paper states that Wausaus three public pools are too wausau school district outdated, and inefficient. It goes on to say that Westons aquatic center is more modern, but still only makes a modest profit each year. wausau school district not in possession of the citys balance sheets so I cannot comment on how profitable these public pools are, but I do have a general question regarding outdoor water facilities in Northern Wisconsin: Why do we build so many outdoor swimming facilities in such a mild climate? Considering that temperatures during the summer usually seem to hover around the 80s during the summer in Northern Wisconsin (occasionally breaking into the 90s for a few weeks), a partly cloudy day with some breezy winds can be all it takes for somebody to decide its a bit too chilly to head down to the pool. I like to take my kids to the pool, but I can usually only take them on the weekends. There have been times where I have taken my kids to the splash pad at Marathon Park (which is a great public park for small children by the way), but they often complain that they are too cold (due to temperature, breeze, shade, etc.) and we end up leaving after only being there a few minutes. The kids really enjoy places like the Lodge at Cedar Creek, but sometimes there are so many people there that you cannot get in, not to mention that it is a lot more expensive to take your children there than a public pool or splash pad. So, when it comes wausau school district to the economics of building public pools, wausau school district do we make them more profitable? How do we convince people to come and use our public pools when so many other things compete for their time during the 3 months of summer (like canoeing, hiking, biking, etc.)? What if the city enclosed a pool or two (possibly at the expense of shutting one down if necessary) to make the pools economically viable year-round? Obviously, an enclosed building adds considerably to the operations expense (not to mention the need for evening lifeguards during the school year, heat, etc.), but perhaps the increased availability could offset the operating expenses. Chances are the city has already looked at this option in the past and decided against it, but maybe it could be something as simple putting up a wind break around the pools. Is there a way we could use a removable roof of some sort to allow the pool to be open air during the hotter wausau school district of the summer - and then close the roof thereby allowing operation for a few more months out of the year? Or should we do as the Herald suggests and shut down all the public pools and rely on the lake? |

My name is Talley Griffith, wdbj I was a friend of Reema Samaha, who perished in the horrific wdbj last week. I met Reema through a mutual friend, and from the first moment we laughed together - discussing everything from Lebanon to music and dance - I knew she was a special person. A magnetic personality with a mega-watt heart fueled by a love for people, dance, and her heritage. I knew right away that she was destined to make a difference in this world. In fact, I do not recall ever meeting anyone so honest, pure, optimistic, and yet aware. Obviously, when I was notified by family as to her demise&I was rendered paralyzed with grief utter disbelief. These emotions soon gave way to a sense of loss, and an insatiable ache for her parents and siblings. As a professional musician, (or as any artist would) I sought solace in my music. Thinking of Reema dancing in the clouds, across the sunset and lighting the heavens with that radiant glow. I thought of what she would say had she lived, or not attended class that fateful day. Of how she would be the first to help others and work diligently to focus on the strength of the human spirit - not its flaws. I dedicated a new piece of music (an instrumental) to Reema. Indeed, if you close your eyes while listening - you can almost picture her graceful movements in perfect syncopation with the flowing music. The lead guitar part was created to simulate (literally) a crying guitar. The sound of my soul and heart weeping through an instrument at the thought of this world losing such a passionate leader in life. I sent it to my friend Jean Jadhon at WDBJ, who was overwhelmed herself. They decided to run this as a wdbj story on Thursday nights 6pm broadcast and others that followed.  Since then, I have received tons and tons of emails, comments, and messages from all over the globe. From Grammy winners who said they were moved beyond words and while listening, could feel this girl whom they had never known&to students and families of victims who thanked me for such a heartfelt tribute. As humbly appreciative as I am for the compliments and support - this is not about me. It wdbj about Reema, and her life (more so than her death). It is a chance for others who never got to know her to see that in this jaded world of instant gratification, corruption, greed, and doubt of everything - that others may know that such a glaring example of all that is good in this world had shared this same small planet with us. That such an angel not only existed, but thrived and was on course to make a difference. And although the method of her passing will forever be etched in history, that it was her life (regardless of the bastardized manner in which it ended) that was most important. I wanted people to know her. Reema did not simply exist or live&she devoured life.  The desire to help, love, and affect positive change coursed through her veins like fire. As did her passion for her heritage and her love of music and dance. I only hope some day that her dream of portraying Lebanons history through dance theater wdbj come to fruition in her honor and memory. So today, I share this with you. In the grand scheme of life, it is nothing but a song for a fallen angel. wdbj beneath the surface, it is more than a tribute&it is a song about a young lady who was an inspiration to everyone. An inspiration - for each day forever never take a grain of hourglass sand for granted, and to live our lives as Reema would. On the horizon we could see another helicopter coming at our ship. We thought to ourselves â€SOh no, here we go again&more bloodshed from our so-called â€Sfriends†in Israel.†The helicopter hovered above the main deck of the ship and then, to our surprise, dropped a brown paper bag containing an orange and, to even greater surprisea business card. On the front of the card read â€ÜCommander Ernest Castle, Naval Attaché USN’ and on the back of the card, handwritten it asked â€ÜHave you casualties?’… As if the dummies couldn’t tell we had casualties after what our â€Üallies’ had just done to us after a million armor-piercing rounds, a thousand rockets and 5 torpedoes. Rick Aimetti took the card to the bridge and gave it to the Captain, who was obviously in no mood to leo frank with this new lunacy. He told them clearly to get the hell away from his ship, finishing his remarks with â€ÜWe want no help from you.’ They left the area and soon were out of sight. There were many heroes that day who put life and limb on the line in order to save their shipmates in harm’s way. I found out leo frank that the boiler tenders never left their battle stations, even though the boiler was Israel’s main target. Israel did her homework ahead of time and knew that a direct hit on the boiler would have blown the ship into tiny pieces and that would have been that. For Gary Brummett, J.P. Newel, Gene Owens, it turned out that their bravery saved our ship. Now was the time to care for our wounded, damage control, plugging holes, putting out fires, etc. The mess deck was full of men because we were using it as the main triage center. Every table had a body on it, as well as the deck itself and there was almost no room to move…So many wounded were there, so much blood. I and others were the walking wounded and, judging by what we saw, we were lucky. We had leo frank corpsmen onboard and only one doctor, Richard Kiepfer. We kept hoping for help from our government, but nevertheless the seconds dragged on like hours and the hours dragged on like years and soon reality set in and we figured out that we were on our own. The heat of the day gave way to the darkness, which was a welcome change, as the blistering heat cooked our crippled ship, making the smell of blood and death all the more impossible to ignore. I had no idea how that night would change my life forever, but I was about to find out. The wounded were screaming in pain, bleeding everywhere. Every sailor who could help was doing all he could to calm our fallen shipmates. They had head wounds and bodies full of shrapnel. Lt. Commander Philip Armstrong the (executive officer of the Liberty) was on one of the tables. I stopped to check on him and he asked me to light him a cigarette…I did and gave it to him. He took long drags off it and soon it was gone and he wanted another so I gave it to him. He smoked it the same as he had the first. As I was talking to him I thought he would be fine. It seemed to me he would make it, but as it leo frank out, I was wrong. A few moments later he was dead. I was shocked and saddened but knew that there would be time to weep later, as others needed help. As the night wore on I was told to go to the Officers’ Mess. There I saw Dr. Kiepfer with his life jacket around his waist. Little did that his belly had been cut to pieces and he was using the life jacket to keep pressure on his wounds so as not to bleed to death while he tended to the leo frank He never uttered a word of complaint. My job was hold a light for Doc Kiepfer as he did his work. While he was working on Gary Blanchard, Gary asked me to take off his socks because he said his â€Üfeet were burning’. I did as he asked, took his socks off and it seemed to ease him a bit. Doc started cutting him open from his chest bone on down, working as hard as he could, but it was obvious even to me that it was too late. Gary’s kidneys were all shot up and a few moments later he died. This wonderful young man was gone and it was at this point that I began to hate the murderers who did this to us. What did we do to deserve this? This not the action of a friend, it was like being sucker-punched the way Judas did to Jesus. They had overflown us for hours earlier in the day and knew who we were. We felt safe, and it was at this moment I figured out that what they were really doing was reconnaissance, finding our weak points so as to better kill us. Doc put a few stitches in him to keep his insides from falling out all over the place and then it was on to the next person. How Doc was able to do what he did was something not human. It was something from another world, and by that I mean probably from heaven, as no human could have done what he did and I will never forget it as long as I live. The Captain stayed on the bridge and would not take any medical help until the crew was looked after first. As the sun began to rise Captain wanted his ship cleaned up, and for that Rick Aimetti and I got the gruesome duty. We got pressure to our firehoses and began the grim task that still brings me nightmares. Body parts were all over, blood and a shoe with a foot still in it. We had no clue who it belonged to. We did as we were ordered and began washing the body parts of our American brothers over the side of the ship to be forever interred in the sea. Their families would never get the chance of seeing them at their wake…No lock of hair, no goodbye kiss, nothing. The tears were rolling down my face as I did this unholy thing of giving to the sea my friends and shipmates and as I did this I begged their forgiveness. The gun tubes were full of blood that a fire hose was not going to remove, as the blood was baked onto the haze gray paint of our ship. Blood was streaming down the starboard bulkhead wall. We made are way down to the main deck and finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, our gruesome job was leo frank What I had just done has been a burden on my soul everyday for 40 years, which by my math is somewhere close to 15,000 days. It is now about 10 am and we see American ships on the horizon. At that moment my body gave out and I laid on the deck…I leo frank exhausted… It was hard to move and I felt relieved that help leo frank there but also anger that help did not come when we needed it the most. Where was my country? Where was my navy? Where was my government? How the hell could they do such a thing to 300 men who swore to give their lives if necessary for the defense of America? My world, my faith in everything that I knew growing up had just been shattered like broken glass, and even though I didn’t know it at the time, this was to be the event that changed me forever, like Saul who, while on his leo frank to Damascus to kill the followers of this new religion known as Christianity, was knocked off his horse, blinded and turned into someone and something new. Little did I know that my work had only just begun. Now, 40 years later, I am here to tell the story of what happened on June 8th, 1967 to nearly 300 American boys onboard a ship known as the USS Liberty when it was attacked by Israel for nearly 2 hours. Having received rap CDs instead of their copy of the official EFY 2006 soundtrack, several attending teens went on a rampage, destroying two buildings in the Deseret Towers dormitory complex on BYU campus. Campus police quickly arrived on the scene and immediately booted several illegally parked cars. When the series was cancelled in 1955, she retained rights to the the vampira show of Vampira. Ive come to realize that San Francisco is a town full of photographic enticements. Ive been taking patriots giants here consistently for about a year and it seems as if Ive barely scratched the surface. Ive taken thousands of pictures covering most of the city and have come to realize that I should share my little photo journeys with everyone else. Im particularly interested in sharing with other photographers, possibly helping them prepare for their own SF adventures. So, without further adieu, here is Capturing the Citys Photo Adventure #1: Todays path lead us through the Inner Sunset into the famous hippie haven, Haight-Ashbury. This time of year (mid-fall) is fairly warm (65-70 degrees mid-day) but quite breezy so I would suggest a light jacket. Its a great time to be on foot and/or use public transportation (we use the fairly reliable MUNI train and bus system) to reach the best photo spots. Its just a bad idea to drive a car in SF, especially if you dont know the terrain very well. The Inner Sunset is mostly a residential area but has a great collection of unique shops, great restaurants, and plenty of photo-worthiness along 9th Street between Lincoln and Kirkham. This neighborhood is also steps away from Golden Gate Park and is easy to traverse (despite being slightly crowded during daylight hours). Today, the bustle seemed to congregate around the intersection at Irving and 9th where the most popular area restaurants are located. After running a couple of errands, we hopped on the train and headed into the Haight. When it comes to photography, flip video camcorder neighborhood offers a wide range of subjects. The homeless congregate here so if compelling portraits are your thing, this is the place. The shops are strange, colorful, and unique. The homes are of legend and the graffiti is phenomenal. Oh, and the food choices in this area are great! We highly recommend The Citrus Club (where we ate today) and Rosamunde Sausage Grill. Along the way into the Haight, we tried out flip video camcorder new Flip Video camcorder. While I cant brag about my camera skills, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised at how well this cigarette pack-sized camera works. The picture was great and it rose parade lighting very well. A sample video fight quest hopefully be coming real soon. Once I figure out how to get one up here, that is.
