Breaking News: Golfweek fired its editor, Dave Seanor over his choice to display a noose on the cover of its most recent publication. William P. Kupper Jr., president of Turnstile Publishing Company, the parent company of Golfweek, announced that Seanor was replaced by Jeff Babineau. Kupper gave this statement:

â€SWe apologize for creating this graphic cover that received extreme negative reaction from consumers, subscribers and advertisers across the country, Kupper said in a statement. â€SWe were trying to convey the controversial issue with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall to ernie holmes cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic.”

Oddly, No pulled its money from the magazine and they reported that with a 160,000, nearly all of it by subscription, it received only 100 to 150 demands for cancellations.

The score right now is 6-4, 3-6, 7-6,6-7, 5-5; Roddick just staved off three or four match points. the 29th seed is playing the match of his life against A-Rod, the 6th seed. If you have ESPN2, tune in. There are ernie holmes tie-breakers in the fifth set at the Aussie Open.

If you told any professional tennis player what the match outcome would be if he finished a match and hit 79 winners and commit only 23 unforced errors and lose the match, hed laugh.

Right now, Andy Roddick is close to tears.

In a 3rd-round grand slam tennis match for the ages, Roddick was upset by 29th-seeded Phillipp Kohlschreiber, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6,6-7, 8-6. In an unheard ernie holmes display of tennis, the 52103 154 pound, ernie holmes old Kohlschreiber hit 104 winners (32 aces) committed only 33 unforced errors. To put this in perspective, to win a game in tennis, a player must win at least four points. Kohlschreiber won 30 games to win his match. A winner is an unreturnable shot. The German hit 26 games worth of winners, which means Kohlschreiber needed to only 16 points otherwise to win the match.



I found ernie holmes thing odd about Kohlschreiber and his win. The German is 24-years old and previous to this match had recently begun a steady rise in the ATP Tour rankings. Before this Kohlschreiber was known as little more than a slight of build baseliner with no outstanding junior tournament resume and no victories over top five players.

With this as a background, he played a four-hour match and for the last 90 minutes (around 50 minutes of actual play) Kohlschreiber missed no backhands. None. I have never seen a player under the pressure of the fourth and fifth sets of a major tournament miss no shots off of one wing. Additionally, let you know how well Roddick was playing, the American won the fourth set despite Kohlschreibers backhand brilliance.

Another oddity was that in over 80-degree, high humidity night match, the skinny Kohlschreiber played a four-hour match, never changed his shirt, and barely broke a sweat. His five-set record going into this 3rd-round match was only 2-2 so the German had relatively little five set experience which usually translates to little five set conditioning and little understanding of the ebbs and flows that occur within a fifth set, yet Kohlschreiber handled the situation flawlessly and appeared ernie holmes at the end of the match.

If Phillipp Kohlschreiber can come close to his performance against Roddick the remainder of the tournament, he will at least reach the finals of the Australian Open, defeating Rafael Nadal along the way.

With that said, in my heart of hearts, I smell a skunk. Tennis players are tested under World Anti-Doping Agency regulations for performance-enhancing drugs. Now, not to make any accusations or anything, but if Kohlschreiber tests dirty for say, EPO (a red blood cell-enhancing treatment which allows the body to immediately seem as if lived in or trained extensively at high altitude), I would not be surprised.

For now, though, Phillipp Kohlschreiber can bask in the glory of one of the greatest performances in ernie holmes history.

Steel Curtain member dies

Ernie Holmes, foundational member of the Pittsburgh Steelers famed Steel Curtain defense  but one of the lesser-known defenders on the team, died in a car crash. Holmes was 59:

Holmes was driving alone Thursday night when his car left the road and rolled several times near Lumberton, about 80 miles from Houston, a Texas Department of Public Safety dispatcher said Friday.

He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car, and pronounced dead at the scene, the department said.

Holmes, an ordained minister, lived on a ranch in Wiergate. His death was first reported by Beaumont TV station KFDM.

The two-time All-Pro played for the Steelers from 1972-77 and spent part of the 1978 season with ernie holmes England before retiring. He played on a defensive line with Steel Curtain teammates Mean Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood and Dwight White.
