Poput većine američkih metal grupa osnovanih polovinom devedesetih,i System Of A Down - ukojem su djelovala četiri mlada kalifornijska Armenca - bili su pod utjecajem alter metal grupa poput Jane's Additcion->i trash metal bendova.Nastupni album "System of a down" producirao je Rick Rubin konbinirajuči žestinu punk-metala,političke tekstove i utjecaj armenskog foklorai jazz improvizacija. Album je ipak prošao enzapaženo sve dok na grupu nije skrenuo pažnju singl "Chop Suey" iz 2001., a potom i izniman album "Toxicity". Snimljen nakon tri godine stalnog sviranja, album je pokazao sve ključne sastojke osebujnog zvuka System Of A Down u najboljem izdanju: manijakalne gitare s čudnim i neočekivanim riffovima, solidnim tekstovima i orginalnim melodijama. Godinu dana kasnije objavili su još jedan solidan projekt- "Steal This Album!" na kojemu su se ranije našle neobjavljene teme, no u posve dorađenom i zaokruženom izdanju osmišljenog projekta. "Mesmerize" iz 2005. donio je eksperimentalniji materijal sa slojevitijim skladbama i zahtjevnijim temama kojima su, kao i društvenim komentarima, System Of A down uvijek bili skloni. Album je snimljen u produkciji Ricka Rubina i Darona Malakiana.
