I first learned about the wonders of Sal-Met from Kip, AKA W4KIP ("Whiskey Four Kilo India Papa..."). Kip was a really smart guy. Maybe the smartest person I have ever known. Kip had a PhD in Electrical Engineering, but knew something about literally everything from roller coasters to atomic physics.

I used to talk to Kip on the radio on my drive to/from work. Kip's signal was always perfect. I used to think, before I actually met him, he must have tons of all the latest expensive Ham Radio gear. Piled high, kinda like NASA Control or something. When I finally went over to Kip's house I realized his "NASA Control" was just a spare bedroom with a single shelf that held a few 20+ year old radios that Kip had built form kits. Of course, Kip had heavily modified each of the radios to make them better.

Kip had modified virtually all his equipment from video cameras to his hand-held radios (HT) to incorporate his own innovative designs. Kip had an old HT to which he had added a "battery circuit". Typically rechargeable batteries of that day lasted, at most, 2-3 years, if you were lucky. Kip's HT rechargeable batteries were 13 years old and still going strong. He offered his circuit to one of the radio companies, but they dismissed it out of hand.

There a bunch of us with which Kip shared his love and knowledge of Ham Radio. Kip's passion was ATV (Amateur Television). He was a real pioneer. A small group of us used to transmit 2-way TV pictures (Amateur TV) from my house in Decatur to Kip in Smyrna, and to Dave (KD4SHH) in Woodstock, every Thursday night. It was something. I used to go to a nearby parking deck in Decatur, until I put up my own 85 foot tower. Trees are tall you know, and you have to see over them or the trees just block your signal.

We built our own specialized antennas based on Kip's original designs and made our own TV transmitters and amplifiers. Microwave stuff, 1.2 GigaHertz. Mostly using the oddest pieces and parts from old TV sets and cable TV converters. Our stuff worked great.

A lot of people thought Kip was strange. But Kip was the man. And a good friend.

Kip passed away several years ago (W4KIP, SK..). They took down Kip's tower and got rid of all his radio stuff. We don't transmit on TV too much anymore. It's just not the same.
