'The income inequality was one fault line which created the political pressure to send money in particular direction. (...) Now, how do you help people who's incomes aren't growing... well, you're trying to retrain them, you trying to educate them... but that's really difficult and it takes a long time... the next possible alternative was credit... (...) By giving people who have fallen behind easy credit you allow them to consume... and after all consumption matter as much and more than income. I argue that housing credit and a push towards a low income housing credit was a paliative, a way to take people's attention of the deeper problem that incomes are stagnating... and it worked.' ...Why Fault Lines? by Raghuram Rajan

'Some will see it as a tool to help the government in its aim of dismantling the centralised state, by providing the capital needed by civil servants and officials to buy out their public services and turn them into employee partnerships and mutuals. If much of the money did end up helping to turn parts of the public sector into John-Lewis-style employee-owned businesses, some would see that as a waste of the Big Society Bank's resources.'
'Mr Cable also announced that the Post Office network, which is not included in the sell-off, may be converted into a mutual ownership structure, and promised there would be no further closures of Post Office outlets. "It seems to me that the Post Office is ideally suited to a John Lewis or Co-operative Group style structure, where employees, sub-postmasters and communities get a greater say in how the company is run," he said. John Lewis is owned by its employees, who are granted "partner" status and a stake in the company in order to encourage employee loyalty and service quality. He said that the Co-operative UK had already been asked to put together a proposal for how mutualisation could be done. "This would be the Big Society in action," added the Liberal Democrat, endorsing the Conservative party's slogan for greater community participation in government services. However, the Co-operative's head - Ed Mayo - cautioned that building a membership-base and culture for mutual ownership would take time. "For those who want to see a thriving network of post offices in communities across the UK, what we need now is patience, goodwill and open minds," added Mr Mayo.'
