Previous attempts to restore lost motor function, using programmable sequence of electrical pulses, delivered through a nerve located near the cuff, have enabled paralyzed people to walk more than a few minutes. Unfortunately, the large nerve fibers are more sensitive to electrical stimulation, and therefore the muscles contract in the wrong order - first the big, fast twitch fibers, and then the small, slow twitch!
This leads to the jerky movements, resulting in fatigue sets in quickly.
