A group of scientists from the National Resource for Automated Molecular Microscopy (NRAMM) Scripps Institute, led by Professor Potter, Clinton (Clinton Potter) and Bridget Carragher (Bridget Carragher), in collaboration with graduate students of the School of Science and Technology Institute of Scripps Kellogg (Kellogg School of Science and Technology) Anke Mulder (Anke Mulder) and Craig Yoshioka (Craig Yoshioka) developed as described in an article in Science a new method, called Discovery single-particle profiling (DSP), which eliminates the problem of cleaning and to successfully visualize the untreated samples. Developed by scientists from the automatic data collection and processing of data gave them a chance to decipher obtained as a result of a complex "hodgepodge" of data that otherwise would be impossible.

For this project, researcher at the laboratory Williamson Andrea Back (Andrea Beck) identified components of the ribosomes of cells commonly used to study bacteria Escherichia Coli. She then chemically break them apart, creating thereby a solution of smaller components that make up the ribosome. The components were mixed, and then rapidly stained and examined under an electron microscope. "We started with a" dirty "samples, which contained a terribly complex mixture of various particles," - says Williamson.
