The study showed that mitochondrial dysfunction in mutant mice leads to a shift of metabolism: from aerobic respiration to anaerobic glycolysis. This changes the activity of genes coding for the enzyme lactate dehydrogenase. This enzyme enables the production of lactate from pyruvate, so as a result of lactate accumulates in the brain tissue. The same thing happens during physical overload of the body. The content of lactate, although not as rapidly rising in the brain of normal mice as they age.
