Dr N advised me, perfectly logically, that in the last days of my sick leave I appear voluntarily at work, talk a little with colleagues, see who is working, if there are any changes, and that way I will best overcome the shock of half a year’s absence. I would have thought of that myself!
And so I do that. I call first, I go slowly and without problem from the invisible barrier I arrive in town. And at the publisher something is odd… Everybody is like boiled mutton. Grudging greeting. I ask something, grudging reply. And well, it’s a long time since I was here, and I did not confide in them either, particularly not in the abrupt stage of illness before I cracked. As if he is afraid. I ask where the boss is, out somewhere, he said, he doesn’t know when he’ll be back. So I drift about a little like a deaf calf and nothing, I go into the city.
Tomorrow, or some other day, the same again. Nobody will come for coffee, nobody is curious, nobody does anything apart from stare into his computer. The boss is out again.
I got hold of him by mobile. When do you start work officially? He asks. On Monday. Should we see each other first? There’s no need.
Ah, good…
